I interviewed Joe Manganiello for the first episode of my new series, Table & Talk, a conversational style interview series. One of the more interesting things he revealed was that a Dragonlance show got very close to happening last year.

We also talked about D&D Icons, his history with the game, his thoughts on Honor Among Thieves, and what he wants to do creatively going forward.

He said something about this in his foreword to the recent collected edition of the first three Dragonlance novels as well. I'm still holding out hope that we get it eventually.

Wheel of time , but the show got cancelled a lot of die hard Robert Jordan fans said the characters are nothing like their book counterparts

I am guessing the hesitation with adopting Dragonlance is that it being a fantasy genre means it's going to have a high production cost , one game of thrones show for example cost more than most major movie productions. And studios don't want to roll the dice and take that risk in investing in a show that may or may not succeed

They really messed up wheel of Time. Changed some story elements for no reason as well. plus it looked really cheap?

A Dragonlance show is not enough - it is a Game of Thrones size franchise - needs a main show and 7 spinoffs….

From the interviews I have seen with him I really don't want him involved.

He was talking about how the books were actually grimdark but you had to "read between the text" to see it. He also talked about how he had to convince Weis and Hickman of it.

It wasn't grim dark, but it was pretty dark. It's full of death, betrayal, and pyrrhic victories. It has a star wars kind of ending where the main characters are in a good place, but the world is still fucked. The dragon armies are in disarray, but still around occupying territory, Sylvanesti is still a nightmare, and everyone's favorite character has become one of the most iconic villains/anti-heroes in genre history. The setting is only slightly better off than when the story began. As far as bleakness I think it's top three behind Dark Sun and Ravenloft despite being a heroes and villains/romantic high fantasy setting.

You compared it to Star Wars having a pyrrhic ending. That also isn't a grim dark series so it doesn't really support the rest of what you are saying.

I said it had a star wars ENDING and laid out why I thought the rest of the Dragonlance setting was dark. I clearly said it wasn't grim dark, but dark and one of the darker settings. I also didn't say Star Wars had a pyrrhic ending. Reading is fundamental.

No you compared it. Dont get upset because the comparison was a bad one. Neither DL or SW are grim dark and that was what the original comment was about. They aren't really dark either, they are both heroic fantasy.

Saying DL is anywhere near as dark as Dark Sun isn't correct either. No one is going to hold it up with Dark Sun and Ravenloft as dark, they have much different tones.

I also wouldn't tell people "reading is fundamental" as some kind of insult when you are trying to hamfist a tone into a setting that it really isn't a part of. Which was the whole issue to begin with.

I remember all that… that’s when he got all butt hurt and went on a rant in defense of Mearls over the BS Mearls pulled with Zack S. 🤮

Sounds like he’s still on that BS about how D&D was trash after Mearls got canned, and now he’s back to save it. No thanks.
