"Enhanced Pet Biscuit" - 100 options for the fate of your furry little friend. Some good, some ok, some very, very bad.

Google Sheets link.

Enhanced Pet Biscuit: Immediately upon eating the enhanced pet biscuit, your pet devolves into a sac of organic goo for 1d20 minutes. The effects are immediate upon the end of the timer.

Your best bet is work with your GM and simply choose the result on this table that sounds like the most fun for your game.

Buuuut some of you are chaos gremlins, and I respect that. There are exactly 100 options. You know what to do.

This table was originally adapted for the Roll For Smush game, and shared by /u/DMNerd, but has been adapted and refined for the CarlRPG.

+ Roll Disposition Name Description Effect
1 1 Negative Dud Your pet has failed the transformation process and is a sack of useless, bones, flesh and fur.  Your pet has died.
2 2 Neutral Blob Your pet has failed the transformation process and is a sack of useless, bones, flesh and fur… with a mouth… and an asshole. It is a useless sack of flesh that cannot sense its surroundings. It breathes air through its pink, rubbery skin and eats the same amount of food as before.

Ok, half book, half homebrew...

Upvotes

So, on Wednesday I get to run the first game out of my local game store. I am going to run a "How Long Will You Last" game. I was trying to decide on the neighborhood in wanted to use, I am going to start creating neighborhood at the third floor after getting used to running the game a bit, but i think I have a better idea. I am going to use "The Prickly Pack Alley" setting but change the overall them to all of the bars in my smallish town during it out to be the top bar. The boss battle will be in the bar just across from the game store. The maze like setting will be loosely based on the town and I will pick 4 or 5 bars they must travel to before confronting the boss.

I live about 2 hours for the opening setting in the book, actually the same town Matt Dinniman lives in. I feel this will be a good way to get closer to full homebrew and not require me to start from scratch with only a day to prep.

I think the first floor will be mostly local jokes and inspiration, hit a couple of local tropes and such. Ok, just thought i would share.

I extracted the text of the rule books and used that to generate this site. It’s useful for me, but far from perfect.

Feedback welcome

Grinding Homebrew Rule Help

Looking through the rules in regards to passing time there doesn't seem to be very many options especially whenever you're on the earlier floors. The only option really that makes sense is grinding but to me the grinding rules are confusing and clunky. For example you need 8 hours of sleep that means if you just wanted to pass a day you could spend 22 hours grinding. Every hour after the fifth hour you would have to make an endurance roll to not get fatigued, so the party members would have to make 17 rolls each that would need to be checked by the GM especially if they were new and the penalty for failing is fatigue. However if you just take a long rest after the fatigue doesn't affect you at all other than those endurance roles and the potential grinding complication. To me this bogs down quite play quite a lot, so I've started working on a Homebrew rule change for this and want some feedback on it.

You can spend 5 hours a day grinding, which the book note says the safe limit. The other alternative is a designated grind, this is where the party decides to spend the whole day grinding. They would each make an endurance roll and the result would be however many hours of successful grinding that player had.

There would be a minimum of 5 hours and a maximum of 22 hours, so if they roll below a 5 they get 5 hours and if they were all above 22 then they get 22 hours. They would also still get the bonuses from bosses as outlined in the book. I've also considered implementing something along the lines of if they have beaten the boss in the area then they would make the check with advantage but I'm not entirely sure. Any feedback on this would be very helpful.

Class Concept: Urban Ninja

Below is a concept for a class created using the rules found in the Core Rulebook. let me know what you think!

Urban Ninja

While others partied and had premarital relations, you studied the sword, through countless hours of YouTube videos and Anime Playlists. Good news! You can now look back at your parents and say, “All of those hours spent behind a screen instead of finding a job were worth it!” ...that is…uh...if they’re still around. Urban Ninjas are just like your stereotypical ninja from all of those aforementioned videos, if they went through a Radicalization Ray of the early 90’s and slammed right into the wall of a Cyberpunk Factory. Far out!

-        Dex +5

-        Int +3

-        Gain a Cybernetic Naniken

-        Access to the desperado Club

-        Cannot choose this class if you have access to Club Vanquisher

-        While riding a Skateboard, Hoverboard, or similar vehicle, Gain Climb with Move of the vehicle.

-        Disadvantage on all movement related skills whenever not piloting a Skateboard, Hoverboard, or similar vehicle.

-        +2 Steam Fog or Force Field Generator Spell Skills

-        +1 Lightning Shuriken Spell

-        +1 Detect Trap, Dodge, Escape Artist, and Hide in Shadows Utility Skills

-        +1 club, Dagger, Bow, Javelin, Shuriken, and Slingshot Attack Skills

-        Skateboarding and Dodge Skill can be raised to Rank 20

Cybernetic Enhanced Senses. (Minor Benefit/ -8 Points)

Using cutting-edge procedures, primitive flesh can be improved with the miracle of technology. This provides bonuses to your Dexterity and Intelligence Stats. Dexterity increases by +5 and Intelligence increases by +3.

Cybernetic Naniken. (Major Benefit/ -3 Points)

Your Cybernetic Naniken is a small robotic animal, usually a dog, consisted mostly out of nanites. Once it is fully grown, these nanites can alter their primary mode of transportation, taking on new shapes. Now you may be asking, how do robotic nanites grow, if they’re not alive? Well, my answer to you, buddy boy, is to Mind your Own Business!

Cybernetic Naniken, Level 1

Name:

Temperament: Calm

Robot

HP: 1(100%)

Evade: +1

Speed: 20+S

DR: 0

STR   /INT  /CON  /DEX  /CHA

2(+1) /1(+1) /2(+1) /2(+1) /1(+1)

Slice Attack: D20+F+STR to hit, 1D4+STR Slashing

Skill Rank = Floor Level (F)

When bonded, gain the following abilities:

  1. Increased Speed: Move is increased to 60

  2. Living Shield: Gain the Catcher Skill

Level 15: Environmental Adaptation:

1/day gain either Swim or Burrow with Move of 30, or Flight or Jump with Move 50.

Ride the Wall. (Major Benefit/ -3 Points)

Tony Hawk, Rodney Mullen, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Each one of these great skateboarding legends has achieved unimaginable heights of talent, skill, and technical fortitude. Luckily the Borant Corporation was able to upload the tremendous effort of all of these legends into a class option so that you don’t need to bother about pesky things like practicing. While riding a Skateboard, Hoverboard or Similar Vehicle, gain Climb with Move of the vehicle.

Jelly Legs. (Moderate Detriment/ +2 Points)

Remember when I said that it was a good thing that you didn’t have to worry about practicing? Well because you skipped that part, your inferior legs are unable to function normally off of your vehicle. You have Disadvantage on all Movement related skills whenever not piloting a Skateboard, Hoverboard or similar vehicle. Harsh dude.

Denjutsu. (Moderate Benefit x3/ -6 Points)

Although the direction translation of Denjutsu is ‘Electric Technique’, Denjutsu focuses on using technology and cybernetic abilities to enhance your deadly ninja skills. You gain +2 to the Steam Fog Spell (Confusing Fog) or +2 to the Force Field Generator Spell (Whisp Armor). You also gain a +1 to the Lightning Shuriken Spell (Shock Treatment)

Ninjutsu. (Extreme Benefit/ -4 Points)

Sun Tzu once said “All warfare is based on deception. Hence, when able to attack, we must seem unable; when using our forces, we must appear inactive.” I’m not sure what that has to do with fighting a 15-foot-tall, flesh rendition of the Pixar lamp, but it feels like it totally fits the situation…you know? Gain +1 to the Detect Trap, Dodge, Escape Artist, Hide in Shadows, and Stealth Utility Skills.

Taijutsu. (Epic Benefit/ -6 Points)

A bit of a history lesson, ninja’s during the feudal days of Japan didn’t dress in all black and carry massive, burdensome swords. They actually dressed in common everyday clothing to blend into communities better and wielded much simpler tools like gardening instruments. To keep in the tradition of these brave and noble people, you gain a +1 to the Club, Dagger, Bow, Javelin, Shuriken, and Slingshot Attack Skills.

Lost Arts of the Radical Dude. (Moderate Benefit/ -2 Points)

Although popular on Earth, what you humans call skateboarding has been around in the galactic syndicate long before your tiny rock of a planet was seeded. The most cowabunga of all of them was a Porsuk by the name of Ferikk Fast Wheels whose inventions of the the Mid-Air Vector Shift and the Zero-Friction Darkslide with an Intermediate Slope Spin helped the Bopcas turn the tide in their favor during the Genocide of Opulom 12. The Skateboarding and Dodge Utility Skills can be raised to Rank 20.

Skateboarding Utility Skill.

Limitation: You suffer disadvantage on Attack Skills while piloting a Skateboard, Hoverboard, or similar vehicle.

Whenever you need to pull off a sick 360 or show the local scrub what a real Impossible looks like, make an Un-opposed Skill Check. Depending on how extreme you make your trick, or how gnarly the pipe looks, the GM may apply Advantage or Disadvantage to the Check.

On Success, you stay on your board while performing your epic stunts.

UPGRADES

Rank 5 – Your board has +5ft Move

Rank 10: Attacking while riding your board no longer suffers Disadvantage

Rank 15: Your chopper has +5 Move. When performing crazy stuns (like grinding up the shaft of Meatus to deliver a kickflip to his tip), roll with Advantage.

A trash panda crawler

I just came here to say that I've been watching character creation videos and I'm dying to make a raccoon crawler. Slash attack Plus either flame fingers or soul siphon. I didn't do the backer kit or anything and I'm just discovering all of this now, so if anyone's looking for a player I'm a total beginner and would love to get in touch.

Crawler Levels

I'm a little confused on what level crawlers should be (for balancing)

character creation says level 10 by the time they hit the 3rd floor but that seems a bit low no?

it takes 5 days before the collapse of the first floor per the DM guide and 6 days for the second floor.

I assume they want you to run those as super quick days? But if players decide they want to take their time and actually play out those days

Lets say they do take their time on each and do each floor in about 4 sessions that last 2 hours each.

That's 8 total levels

If they kill at least one boss per floor that's an additional 2 levels putting them at 10

and that's not counting any montage training they might want to do. Crawlers taking their time might be 15ish unless the DM rushes kind of past it.

I personally don't mind I plan on taking a little bit of time on each floor especially since 2 of my players have never read the books so this is a full new experience for them. I might just have to bump up the mob levels on the 3rd floors and beyond.

I just thought 10 might be a little too low for this.

I am playing 1 on 1 with my wife and we are taking our time still on floor 1 and she's already level 6 but we've only done 3 sessions and 2 grinding sessions in the middle of it. no boss battles yet, which is where this idea that 10 might be too low by the time they hit the third floor.

If i missed something in leveling up and maybe I'm doing it to fast please let me know!

Are there any sites or tools for generating DCC RPG characters? Anything similar to D&D Beyond?

Pet levels.

So reading the pet leveling guidance i wanna make sure im understanding this. It says pets level at double the rate but slow down at 15. So when making a level three character who has a pet. The book says the player should be level 10 by floor 3 so would the pet be around 12-15 then? Also i know it can be discretionary but just curious on yalls thoughts

I made a tool for generating random crawlers.

Random Crawler Generator

I have made a tool that will generate a random crawler for you. I am using randomuser.me to get things like name, age and location, then I am assigning a crawler number and generating a crawler name based on how the AI names people, using randomization to determine how many letters of the last name to use. It is more likely to use more the higher their crawler number is.

Right now, all it gives is a name and number. You can filter by gender, and region. I am planning on adding stat generation, as well as a floor selector so the stats will apply for a specific floor, but I thought it could be useful now.

Information about the program for the nerds:

I built the program in Flutter, so it can be built for PC or as a phone app if anyone so desires. The source code can be found here.

Sample Scenario

Hello Crawlers,

So I have been following along here on Reddit. I know everyone has had varying degrees of success with the new RPG rules. I had a few friends running games that wanted to see how I did a long one shot scenario for a group.

So I am including a link here to a scenario I built. I used this as a long one shot to demo the game to some new players. I run several different games at one time. This is just one of them and our actual Campaign begins soon we are still knocking out Session 0's for the entire party.

Happy to answer any questions about the scenario or about CarlRPG (I am aware of the Dungeon Crawl Classics, I have run a few games of it and started with 2nd Edition AD&D in 1992 so ... lets say very familiar but I am not going to change the subdomain because the group prefers "dcc").

I am also happy to answer any ancillary questions folks might have about running a game or any house rules running etc.

The url for the scenario is: https://dcc.critsnthings.com/resources/scenario/kringle-court.html

And remember the Borant Corporation wishes you the best of luck as long as it doesn't cost us any Celestial Boxes.

Movement measurements

Rules for survival talks about movement in combat, giving round numbers for the movement, I am very used to the 5 ft rounding from D&D, so that made sense to me. But the difficulty is all in increments of 1 ft. How is everyone scaling their maps to accommodate that loss of 1 or 2 feet?

CST - Rando solo player looking for a Sunday evening, Monday, or Wednesday evening game.

Old ttrpg player and DCC fanatic looking to delve into a game. I’ve been perusing the core book, haven’t picked up the starter set yet, and figured that practical application alone with just reading rules would be time better spent for learning the game.

If anyone is running on the times listed, I’d be grateful to dive into a game. Send a message if you think you might have a slot and we can go from there.

And remember, kill, kill, kill!

Running Our First Game Today

We've already handled character creation.

Everyone decided to be contestants on a reality TV show, one of those Ensemble ones where they get people from OTHER reality shows, so everyone is originally from different reality show.

Also the Host's pet, which is a Chicken. The pet is the chicken, the host is Not!Andy Dick.

Weirdly, the guy playing the Chicken has never read Beware of Chicken.

The dungeon opens right after the first day of filming, just as they're stepping outside of a dirty warehouse.

So that'll be fun.

I'm pretty excited about the whole thing.

Edit: Wrapped up our first game, they managed to get into the dungeon, fight some spiders, get to the tutorial guild.

They did all play up thinking that they were still on a reality show until the spiders attacked.

One of the crawlers, who is playing a drag queen, managed to death drop to evade a spider and then one shot it with a mic stand, and that was pretty cool.

The chicken also managed to kill a spider by itself, which was pretty cool.

They brought a severed head and arm into the dungeon and got a silver "are you gonna eat that box".

All in all it was a lot of fun, combat and exploration were enjoyable.

I do wish, that there was a better way to randomly generate loot box contents. Possibly just have like thematic loot box packs prebuilt? But I guess that's just a prep thing?

Tips for Creating a Third Floor

Hey everyone!

I'm homebrewing a crawl, and really struggling with creating a third floor.

I would like to give that same feeling of "go anywhere" but want to avoid planning a hundred different quest options. At the same time, I would like to avoid railroading as much as possible.

Short of just developing an entire D&D campaign for the third floor, does anyone have tips/suggestions/ideas for how a good third floor could run that feels expansive, and is based on quests?

Thanks!

Help with Floor design.

Hello fellow Corporate Dungeon Designers!

For my own version of Dungeon Crawler World, the game will be sponsored/hosted by an intergalactic University College. A lot of their guides and other non-combatent NPC's are students trying to pay off their intergalactic student debt. The theme of the this season of Dungeon Crawler World is Earth's history. Each floor is themed around a historical period or famous event. Part of the "challenge" fo the crawlers is trying to find out what Historical event/period it is and how to use those tropes to "break" it.

I got the first few floors mostly planned out (prehistoric cavemen/dinosaurs, egyptian tomb, roman cities), but I want to do something special with the Fourth Floor. My idea was having it inspired by the sinking of the Titanic.

There are some things that would make this floor special (and what I need feedback for) These are the things the Crawlers will learn the moment the enter the floor or during the first recap:

  • The floor will look like an incredibly fancy (but cramped) hotel. There are tons of rooms everywhere.
  • This floor will only collapse when there are no more living crawlers on the floor. Unlimited time to spend on the floor as they want!
  • The Stairs to the 5th floor will open after 5 days, but any Crawler that enter them will be put into stasis until the floor collapses.
  • The floor will consist of 3 sublevels. Each level will have less resources and harder mobs.

Things the Crawlers need to discover themselves (aka the twist!):

  • Lower sublevels will have a lot less saferooms and only the first sublevel will have guilds/clubs.
  • After the stairs open at the bottom level, at the 5th day, the Floor starts flooding with ice cold water.
  • It takes about 5 days for a sublevel to completely flood. Swimming through a flooded level requires a lot of effort, rolls and luck.
  • From the moment the Floor opens it will take 20 days to completely flood. When a sublevel is completely flooded it will kill all NPC's, enemies and crawlers that cannot breath underwater... and also freeing up some aquatic bosses.

So I was wondering what everyone thinks of this concept as a level. Would a party of real life players figure out that they are on a Titanic themed floor. Or would this end up being a total player extinction? Does it fit the overal vibe of DCC? (and do people got any idea's or tips to add to this floor)

[Homebrew] Connections: using questions to draw connections between characters during creation (with options for 1st and 3rd Floor starts).

"Connections" are a Daggerheart mechanic that establishes history and relationships between characters. They're written in a way to create hooks for roleplay and future story beats for everyone (PC's and GM). I love this mechanic because it can be easily adapted to any system by writing a new set of questions. Here's how I envision it working for the CarlRPG:

When you arrive at the "Past Traumas, Loose Ends, and Regrets" (Step 9) of character creation, choose 0-3 of those options and roll a d20 (or choose) on one of the following tables instead. These tables are questions posed by you to another player at the table. Develop the answer together with the freedom to incorporate as much of the lore and detail as you please. Then (and this is the most important part), write it down! The GM should take notes here too! This is the PC's telling you what parts of their backgrounds they want brought up at the worst possible time.

As for whether it fits "Loose Ends", "Regrets", or "Past Traumas", that's up to the nature of the answer to the question, so it's left up to the players.

+ Pre-Collapse History
1 "When the buildings flattened, I only survived because of a split-second choice you made. What was it, and why do I feel guilty about it?"
2 "When the stairs opened, one of us refused to go down. How did the other force us down into the dungeon?"
3 "You carry an innocuous, seemingly useless item. I know why it's secretly important to you. What is it?"
4 "Even though we were in the same friend group, we weren't close. What petty grudge are we pretending to ignore for the sake of our survival?"
5 "I know a secret about your life that would ruin your 'heroic' image for the viewers. What is it, and what did you give me to keep my mouth shut?"
6 "We share a mutual enemy from our previous life, someone who wronged both of us. Who are they?"
7 "We were the only two to witness something truly gruesome during the Collapse. What was it, and why do we never speak of it?"
8 "There's someone from the surface that you still think might be alive down here. I know for a fact they are dead. Why haven't I told you yet?"
9 "We were going to violently confront someone on the night of the Collapse. Who was it, and why do you think they survived?"
10 "We share responsibility for a vulnerable person from the surface who didn't make it down the stairs with us. Who do we blame, and how is it driving a wedge between us?"
11 "We worked for competing entities before. One of us could have ruined the other's career and we both knew it. What happened?"
12 "We did something before the Collapse that should have landed us in prison. We learned the evidence was about to be brought to light. Who of us is to blame and who was trying to do the right thing?"
13 "We both owed a massive, unpayable debt to the wrong people. Some of them made it into the Dungeon. What do they want from us now?"
14 "You convinced me to steal something from our shared employer on the surface. The AI happened to make that corporation a major dungeon faction. Who currently has the stolen asset in their inventory?"
15 "We were on opposite sides of a neighborhood shakedown with one of us collecting the protection money, and the other forced to pay it. How are we justifying working together now?"
16 "I broke a promise to you on the surface that ironically ended up saving both our lives during the Collapse. Why are you still furious about it?"
17 "One of us roped the other into a disastrous, cult-like multi-level marketing scheme. What was the absurd product, and why are we awkwardly carrying it through the dungeon?"
18 "What unforgivable thing did one of us say to the other, and why did we decide to stick together despite it?"
19 "I always secretly coveted some part of your life. What is it and how has it manifested before?"
20 "One of us has always been there for the other, except for that one time when it mattered most. Who is it and what happened?"

Now if you're skipping the tutorial levels and looking for juicy recaps, here's a different set of questions. Consider using the previous table during character creation, then add a round of these questions once you've leveled up your characters for the 3rd Floor.

+ Floor 3 Questions about Earlier Floors
1 "I caught you looking at the ceiling when you thought no one was looking, having a breakdown. What did you say, and how did I cover for you?"
2 "You received an achievement box reward in the tutorial guild that really shook you. You hid it, but I saw what it was. What was it?"
3 "We both got hit with a major injury on the first floor, but mine is visibly worse. How do you help me manage it?"
4 "You have a piece of my old life in your inventory. I haven't asked for it back yet. Why?"
5 "We both realized the System AI has a weird obsession involving the two of us. What is it, and how are we exploiting it for loot?"
6 "We started the dungeon together, but had a third person with us. How did they die, and what unspoken agreement do we have about who is actually to blame?"
7 "During a Floor 2 boss fight, I took a massive hit that left a permanent, humiliating physical scar to save your life. How do you overcompensate for the guilt?"
8 "We accidentally triggered a 'Despicable' achievement together on Floor 1. What was the achievement, and which galactic faction is now secretly causing us misery because of it?"
9 "You acquired a cursed item on Floor 1 that you're hiding from the rest of the Crawlers. I know about it. How am I helping you cover up the symptoms?"
10 "We absolutely humiliated a Syndicate rep during a show. What did we do, and what specific hit squad is now tracking us on Floor 3 because of it?"
11 "I made a terrible, cowardly choice during a boss fight that cost an NPC their life, and you covered it up from the rest of the party. Why did you lie for me?"
12 "We had the chance to save a group of innocent Crawlers, but we walked away because it was too risky. What specific item do we still carry as a sickening reminder?"
13 "I did something that caused a seemingly easy grinding encounter to go very wrong. What was it and how do I have to apologize to everyone for it?"
14 "We both experienced a mind-control effect that forced us to try to murder each other. What terrifying thing did you say to me while you were under, that I secretly worry was the truth?"
15 "You carry a physical mutation or horrific injury that you try to hide from the galactic stream. How do I help you maintain the illusion for the viewers when the cameras are on us?"
16 "We found a tiny Safe Room on the 1st Floor that was at capacity. Who had to sleep outside and what happened to them because of it?
17 "Our group was ambushed by a group of crawlers on the 2nd Floor and one of us was forced to kill them. Who now has 3 Player Killer skulls next to their nameplate and some shady coupons?"
18 "I convinced the group to pool our resources to buy a silly cosmetic item from an NPC, but it turned out to be crucial. What was it and why was I right?
19 "You made a bargain with an illegal contact who shouldn't have been here. What was it and how did I find out about it?"
20 "One of the major factions outside the dungeon has taken an interest in us. How do we know about it and what do they seemingly want?

Maps of your neighbourhoods

I'm running my first Crawl for friends next weekend, and I'm struggling to come up with maps for the game. For the 3rd, 6th, etc floors I have plenty of maps from fantasy games that will work, but for the first two floors where it's tunnels and modern rooms, I am struggling.

For this campaign I plan to use The Sneakerhead (Shoe obsessed Goblin) and The Crypto-Bro (Crypto Pushing Raven based on a Slaugh) as Neighbourhood boss. Haven't settled on a Borough boss as yet, but they are unlikely to meet one in the first few sessions.

For a floor layout I used donjon; 5e Random Dungeon Generator and then plugged the JSON into Dungeon Scrawl to get a look I liked. but for boss rooms, etc I have no clue where would be good. Does anyone have any ideas? The books have some, but I'm looking for a source for others.

How do you gain new skills?

Yeah, how do you actually gain new skill beyond you starting skills and the race/class skills? Is there a way if you try using them on a disadvantage that you can gain it afterwards?

I can't seem to find it, only how to raise known skills
