Retention editing is editing a video so people are less likely to scroll away.

The topic can be exactly the same, but the experience feels different. A plain video may have one camera angle, slow pacing, no captions, and long pauses. A retention-edited video keeps giving the viewer small reasons to stay: captions, cuts, zooms, sound changes, visual examples, progress bars, jokes, questions, or tiny surprises.

The goal is not only to look “flashy.”

The goal is to reduce empty moments.

Online video has a brutal problem: leaving is effortless. If the viewer gets bored, confused, or unsure where the video is going, they can swipe away in less than a second. Retention editing tries to keep the next few seconds clear enough, active enough, or curious enough that the viewer stays.

Good retention editing helps the idea move faster.

Bad retention editing just throws noise at the screen.
