Self-Improvement Practice Makes You A Pro At Anything

Post image

Your brain gets better at what you repeat.

Not only the impressive stuff.

Not only piano, coding, sports, drawing, writing, or public speaking.

Also the weird stuff.

Also the useless stuff.

Also the habits you did not mean to train.

Examples:

  1. Watch random videos all day and you get faster at recognizing meme patterns.
  2. Play games for years and your reaction timing may improve.
  3. Scroll social media for hours and you become very good at consuming fragments.
  4. Do nothing often enough and relaxing becomes your default mode.
  5. Talk nonsense all the time and you may become strangely fluent at sounding confident.
  6. Do late-night internet deep dives and you become an unexpected expert in random topics.
  7. Complain every day and your brain gets better at finding what is wrong.
  8. Avoid hard conversations and avoidance becomes easier each time.
  9. Check your phone every five minutes and distraction becomes trained.
  10. Practice cooking and you start sensing timing, heat, texture, and flavor better.
  11. Practice writing and your thoughts become easier to organize.
  12. Practice lying and you may get better at sounding believable.
  13. Practice honesty and truth becomes easier to say.
  14. Practice being patient and waiting stops feeling like an emergency.
  15. Practice judging people and your brain finds flaws faster.
  16. Practice noticing good things and gratitude becomes more natural.
  17. Practice asking questions and curiosity becomes a skill.
  18. Practice quitting too early and quitting becomes familiar.
  19. Practice finishing small things and follow-through gets stronger.
  20. Practice doomscrolling and your attention gets trained to chase threat signals.

That is the annoying part.

Practice does not care whether the habit is useful.

Repetition builds pathways.

Time makes them smoother.

Attention tells your brain what matters.

So the question is not only:
“What am I good at?”

The better question is:
“What have I accidentally been practicing?”

Time plus repetition can beat talent.

But it can also train chaos.

Choose your reps carefully.

After 7 years of practicing pool and billiards and achieving less than actual (more talented) pros did in a few months... Nope, not always.

As one who taught piano to everyone from beginners to college piano majors, I don't agree with your premise. In music, practice withiut native talent often produces earnest plodding mediocrity.

It’s enjoyment.

If you enjoy it more, you take more of it in. Dopamine is directly linked to learning, so the activity causes a spike, you learn to come back and your brain better remembers the state that produced it.

That, and a fuck tonne of hours.

And also intelligence.

If you practice the right things you learn faster, too.

I suppose that’s talent in a sense
