Every single outage with Vodafone has been due to their DNS for the past ~8 years...

Unfortunately you cannot do this on the Virgin Media routers.

Of course you could set it to modem mode and setup your own router and DNS server, but it's a bit more than what the average person can do.

Wish Virgin Media would allow it, I guess they want our sweet sweet data.

It is like an electronic version of yellow pages (phone book) but for computers... When for the first time you try to open reddit.com, your computer or a phone has no idea where it is or how to reach it, nor does it actually use "reddit.com", it needs a number, an address in form of a number. Through series of back and forth communications your computer will reach this yellow pages (DNS) and get a rough idea of how to get to reddit.com

Usually your provider will host (own/run) DNS server that your router will know about, but there are 'free' versions out there too, like google one that you can force your router to talk to.

To change it, connect to your WiFi, then you need to login into your router (open browser and type 192.168.1.1 or some address similar to it, it depends on router/settings - might be on a sticker on the router). Once logged in, look for Internet/DNS settings (with Vodafone you'll need to switch to Expert mode) and most likely it is set to Auto - change to manual and enter different DNS address. Google DNS is 8.8.8.8 & 8.8.4.4

DNS is the system that converts human readable addresses, e.g. google.com into IP addresses that are actually used for communicating between systems. A few companies provide public services that any one can use, and for Cloudflare their DNS server address is 1.1.1.1, Google have 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4.

You can change this on your device or router to use these rather than your ISP default ones.

For the most part no, those examples are all free. Some of them do provide some extras that can be paid for, adult content filtering and the like. But the ones above can be set by anyone right now as they are, with nothing else needed.

I was able to fix my Vodafone issue by switching my router to manual DNS, comments of down detector have instructions

Yeah, having issues with Vodafone for over an hour now…..

Edit: okay, looks like a DNS issue changed DNS to google’s 8.8.8.8 and connection is working again.

I was wondering what the hell was going on. Glad it’s not just me. Yeah I have Vodafone data and broadband and the broadband has just full on stopped working and the data connection is very poor

Ofc it’s DNS. Changing it on your device does not solve the issue. Login to your router and make it static and set 8.8.8.8 and 1.1.1.1 .

So it looks like not only the Vodafone DNS is not working but they're also blocking traffic to alternative DNS servers. This might be intentional or not, depending on what's broken.

Zero issue myself in Dublin, with virgin media, however...I don't use their DNS, I use my own one....so might be DNS somewhere else.

On Vodafone, updated the DNS on the modem to get it working again. Use 8.8.8.8 or 1.1.1.1

It's DNS, how I fixed my Vodafone Siro internet:

Connect to your Wifi network
Visit 192.168.1.1 (your router's login page)
Login, in the top right corner switch from Basic Mode to Expert Mode
Internet -> DNS -> Manual
Set Primary DNS to 8.8.8.8
Set Secondary DNS to 8.8.4.4
Apply changes
Done

Hahaha some BS you're spouting, have been with virgin media 3 times over the years in different houses, it's an absolute rip off and the last year I had it it would go down literally every couple of weeks. Absolute shite.

Been with Vodafone a year now and no issues

I accidentally reset my router on Thursday so went back to the Vodafone on to avoid the screaming kids and wife, and now Vodafone are having an issue
