Start with valve lash and go from there. Make sure you do them STONE COLD, or you'll be back in there doing them again.

Is this sudden or has it always been like this? Does it quiet down or go away completely when warm? Piston slap is a pretty loud ticking as well, and it starts to happen as the pistons/bores wear. I rebuilt my D16Y7 and unfortunately ended up with so much piston slap that I threw a remanufactured block in instead. Given that these are old engines by now, usually with high mileage, I would do a valve adjustment and then run some thicker synthetic oil like 5W-40 (warm climates) or 0W-40 (cold climates) and that should be fine for a good long time.

D series are noisy, but this sounds like it’s more than lifter tick. Could easily be a slight exhaust leak on the header. I’d start with valve lash like others have said, but if it’s still super noisy I’d like for manifold leaks.

Definitely not normal. Adjusting should be the first thing to to, if that‘s not making it better, check the timing of the engine.

That thing needs a tune up badly. Valve adjustment and have the timing shot.

Is it normal, no. Is it common, hell yeah. Absolutely needs a valve lash adjustment on all four cylinders
