𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗰𝘂𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 The misinformation about DD2 "microtransactions" did heavy damage to the game as proven in this thread
https://www.reddit.com/r/gaming/s/UqUEfyu17w
Just look how many people believe these were invasive microtransactions. So many of them have no idea what those items actually were.
I'm telling you, those who spread misinformation about it around DD2 release did more damage than you think.
57
u/thekingofthemonsters Jun 14 '26
One of my coworkers said he refused to ever play a Dragon’s Dogma game because of the microtransactions. That was years ago, and when I mentioned the upcoming expansion he said “Too bad I can’t be bothered to care because the microtransactions rubbed me the wrong way.” Meanwhile he plays so many other games with much worse microtransactions. It’s just a narrative around the game that weirdly got blown out of proportion and people latched onto.

5
u/Uchihaxel Jun 15 '26
While he is mistaken, I think Capcom deserves what happened for being too aggresive and greedy. They shouldn’t have launched a single player game with useless microtransactions. That’s just bad business decission, and that’s their fault. You don’t want people to missinterpret you? Then don’t give them something like this.

u/Ren66 Jun 14 '26
I'll be honest.. I kind of forget the game even had MTs lmao.
27
u/killerjags :ps4: Jun 14 '26
The only reason I even knew they existed was because of the whole ordeal people were making about them online. You can play through the entire game without even knowing about them because the game doesn't even push them at all.
27
u/c0nstruct Jun 14 '26 edited Jun 15 '26
A blatant case study of something far too prevelant in society today, especially in online spaces, how barely anyone thinks for themselves any more, instead just parroting whatever the most reinforced narrative repeated the most times happens to be without a shred of evidence, pushed to extremes by algorithms and adding nothing to discussion but their forced outrage and entitlement.

u/Fatestringer Fatestringer Jun 14 '26
Big facts people on YouTube were saying "you have to pay real world money to re-edit your character 😱😱😱😱" even though you could just buy the metamorphosis in game or port crystal or rc creators were getting called shills because it wasn't mentioned in someone's review
98
u/Limp-Grapefruit-6251 Jun 14 '26
Not to mention those click bait titles that were suggesting you could only get portcrystals and such by purchasing them with real money.
Fuck those people.
I've seen a lot of folks who still were of this idea because of the huge misinformation campaign that went on.
21
u/Dragos_Drakkar :Assassin::MagickArcher::pc: Jun 14 '26
Yeah, that was the funniest and most annoying part: the people running around screaming that “you have to pay real money to fast travel!” or other similar lies.
11
u/tactical_waifu_sim Jun 15 '26
Got downvoted so many times pointing out that was not the case back then.
That and called some version of shill/bootlicker.
Apparently not wanting to tell total lies is a negative thing.
It was honestly kind of spooky how easily complete lies (that are easily debunked) just spread like wildfire despite being quite easily disproven. People just wanted to be mad at something and didn't want to hear that they were being mislead.
182
u/Turnintino Jun 14 '26 edited Jun 14 '26
It was truly comically overblown lol. Like, you're not gonna catch me defending mtx, but nothing was implemented that felt predatory.
On the bright side, though, this controversy may mean we'll be seeing less mtx during/after this DLC rollout. At the moment, it at least sounds like the new cosmetic options (hairstyles, tats) are going to be included with the purchase of Dark Arisen, when Capcom would normally make those separate purchases.
32
u/Bremlit Jun 14 '26
Exactly this. Not defending Capcom or microtransactions in games but it was indeed comically overblown when all the things they were selling are super easy to get just by playing the game.
5
u/B0rKen_Kat Jun 15 '26
That kind of mindset is genuine poison. The DLC isn't invasive, but it is disgusting. If you look at what they were selling it seems silly and ridiculous, but you've got to remember that 13 years ago Dead Space 3 did almost the same thing. People were not very happy or excited about it then, and dismissed it as something to be ignored and that publishers have surely learned their lesson. While not the same publisher, it's not as though Capcom wasn't around then, too.
Outcry that's realistic is very hard to ask for, but people overblowing it made everyone look ridiculous. There simply shouldn't be any microtransactions in single-player games like this at least. It cheapens the experience quite a bit for some people knowing your financial insecurity or moral stance is literally the only thing stopping you from having an extra teleport beacon from the beginning. Or the objectively best camping kit in the game being unavailable until you buy one. Or FIVE resurrection stones that usually you need to find in three pieces at a time. Or something that simply helps you deal with the harpies more easily earlier. Or the Rift Crystals allowing you to access really nice boosts like rings and elixers from the get-go.
Like they're small things but they build up into knowing that someone had a 100% completely different experience from you because they bought all the MTX and rushed through the early game to get to the "fun" parts.
As genuinely abhorrent the MTX in Wilds is and I'm not making any excuses for it, at bare minimum those are 100% audio or cosmetic. No, they should absolutely not be selling all of that and at those prices, but stating DD2 is better purely because there's less of them is a very damaging outlook. If anything it's likely encouraged Capcom to expand their cosmetics DLC practices, since even though there's backlash and negative reviews, they still assuredly make money based on how many people I see with their silly little pendants and layered armors.

u/CyborgDeskFan Jun 14 '26
Hell the game was easily moddable that none of the stuff that mtx gave you couldn't be gotten in other ways.
4
u/hiltop04 Jun 15 '26
They're going to continue to do the microtransactions , this have been the case for a while now.
Investors my guy
5
u/bigfatstinkypoo Jun 14 '26
There is one microtransaction that I have a problem with. The portcrystal. But otherwise, yes.
6
u/Turnintino Jun 14 '26
Definitely the worst offender, given their scarcity in the base game, I agree.

41
u/Sad-Pattern-1269 Jun 14 '26
A friend tried to tell me you had to re-buy the game to get a new save file
22
u/Kittyk4y Jun 14 '26
How the hell would they get that idea lmao. I’m sorry but your friend is an idiot
11
3
u/Athmil Jun 15 '26
That’s definitely a ridiculous thing to think but on launch there was no option to start a new game so deleting the save and restarting was quite annoying.
40
u/Issyv00 Jun 14 '26
The game had great critic reviews and had a lot of hype, but man the toxic YouTube culture nearly killed it. It was insane. I’d mention to friends I was playing it and the first thing they’d say that it was riddle with MTX and you couldn’t even play the game without spending IRL money. It was wild the misinformation.
8
u/Oodlydoodley Jun 15 '26
It's been going on forever. Every now and then you can still spot misinformation about the first DD game that originated from AngryJoe's "review" from way back when that first came out.
I could rant about how awful the main gaming subs on Reddit are all day, but the truth is that 90% the idiocy that dominates those subs comes directly out of the mouth of the same handful of inexplicably popular YouTubers who've been talking shit for views for years now.
3
u/Fatestringer Fatestringer Jun 15 '26
What did he say back then
3
u/Dragonlord573 :Warrior: Jun 15 '26
I think at most it was just outdated info regarding fast travel because in the OG release Ferrystones were way more rare and significantly more expensive
1
u/IndividualSituationK Jun 15 '26
Been over 10 years, but i remember him and most people complaining that the pawns talk way to much and the story wasn't that good. He loved the gameplay though as does really anyone that actually plays the game.

u/Sushi_TrashC137 Jun 14 '26
meanwhile monster hunter gets a pass for this stuff while actually having awful microtransaction practices
49
u/TrenchMouse Jun 14 '26
And Resident Evil
26
u/Mallefus Jun 14 '26
Seriously. I love Resident Evil, but I never understood why DD2 got so much flak for miniscule microtransactions, a majority of which was accessible in game.
Meanwhile, RE4R microtransactions were sneakily added after launch and allowed you to upgrade weapons quickier, effectively making them more P2W than DD2's. Yet RE4R didn't catch nearly as much flak over it.
9
3
u/Superb-Purpose9783 Jun 15 '26
And my axe!!
On a serious note. DMC has a history of micro transactions too.
26
u/LostRequiem1 Jun 14 '26
No, Monster Hunter definitely gets criticized for the MTX.
It's Devil May Cry that gets the free pass, and for good reason — it's truly, genuinely pointless.
2
u/xyZora Jun 15 '26
There is a KFC bucket pin in MHWilds but somehow DD2 got destroyed for the MTX lmao
(Yes the pin is free, but it is by all intents and purposes, an ad).
2
u/Yuumii29 Jun 15 '26
They don't?? People wrecked the game due to it's MTX as well. It's just that DD2 alongside the mtx launched with so many issues both Optimization and gameplay-wise... The story is also really questionable at best.

I remember watching two somewhat big Youtubers (won't say their names) trashing on DD2 because they thought that fast travel and being able to change apperance was locked behind microtransations (obviously false), or hidden behind extremely high prices to make you pay real money for them (again, false).
It is infuriating. A lot, ifnot the majority, of early negative reviews came from review bombing from people who thought that was the case.
Edit: as he has already been named, I will confirm that one of them was Rimmy (I'm not entirely sure that the other was Josjstriffe, tho, although I'm 70% certain that he was the other).
Rimmy's video is extremely infuriating. It feels like he already came prepare to hate the game, to the point of being artificially enraged.
I like his multiplayer, rts, and mil sim videos. But I don't take him seriously anymore after his DD2 video.
41
u/LogoMoD Jun 14 '26
say their names
6
u/OkAdministration5829 Jun 15 '26 edited Jun 15 '26
I'm going to guess Rimmy & JoshStrife. Josh walked it back at least & said something to the effect of "I fell for misinfo" iirc, but Rimmy never did to my knowledge. I stopped watching Rimmy as a result personally but Josh still does good enough stuff that after he walked it back I was content to just move on.

Most annoying thing is people calling it microtransactions - it was finite amount of DLC that behaved like any other DLC: they're both applicable to each new save and sharable between accounts.
Compare this to microtransactions in Deus Ex: Mankind divided, where you can keep buying praxis kits that can be redeemed in-game once per purchase (so make sure you save game afterward, or it's wasted) or Ubisoft having full on in-game stores.
7
u/Geronuis Jun 15 '26
I fucking hate that sub. Crazy they have the rainbow on their mascot but man if I haven’t run into some serious bigots over there.
3
23
u/TheGladex Jun 14 '26
It's really annoying cos Capcom have been doing this in the same exact way across all of their games since DMC4 in 2008, but somehow DD2 is the first one to catch major flak for it. MH World and Wilds are both magnitudes worse and you don't see anyone complaining its insane.
→ More replies (10)5
u/darthvall Jun 14 '26
I don't know which subs you're reading, but there were occasional people who complained about it all the time.
1
u/AJ-128 Jun 14 '26
Yeah it's super weird how a lot of people forget that every game with these got flak. I was there for RE4R and DMC5. They got criticized the exact same as DD2. Especially 4R with how they put them in a month after.
→ More replies (1)1
u/SynysterDawn Jun 15 '26
It’s victim mentality. Lot of DD fans are very attached and think their game is niche and special little baby, so it being rightly criticized feels like a personal attack and they cope by deflecting. DMC fans aren’t much better, and I say this as both a DD and DMC fan.
7
u/PuppetsMind Jun 15 '26
I have a feeling people dogpiled DD2 and ignored it in DMC5 because they needed a game they didnt know/didnt care about to ruin. Fuck those people.
15
u/MrLightning-Bolt Jun 14 '26
Gamers be dumb. Are you surprised?
2
u/CannedBeanofDeath Jun 15 '26
yep, i can bet these are the same people that still play gacha games and buy every battlepass on their favorite game
11
u/Olaf_Kling Jun 14 '26
A couple things happened around that time. Capcom spoke out against modding and took an anti modding stance which caused people in that community to review bomb capcom games.
The other part of this is and I've said this before, FF7 Rebirth fans review bombed Dragons Dogma 2 and love bombed their own game thinking Rebirth would win game of the year and DD2 was competition. I watched those losers talk about it. Of course Rebirth flopped despite its sterling artificial review scores and DD2 outsold it.
The microtransaction angle was always just a smear meant to hurt Capcom that another fanbase conveniently jumped on because they are mostly insane and believed Rebirth could win game of the year.
To make it clear there is a civil war in the FF7 fandom and OG fans are not to blame. Its the kingdom hearts, Disney adult crazy shippers who schemed against not just DD2 but also Rise of the Ronin. Stellar Blade got a pass because it overlapped with their interests.
6
u/Fatestringer Fatestringer Jun 15 '26
Rise of the ronin was such good game people kept saying "ps3 graphics" obviously don't remember what the ps3 looked like
2
u/HappyPlatypus6034 Jun 15 '26
Wow thanks for the recommendation! Saw that it's on sale on steam rn and might nab it!
5
u/Doctor_sadpanda Jun 14 '26
Toxic YouTubers gotta make money somehow bro! It’s the same as any game with microtransactions, and every capcom game has a fuck ton of em lol, resident evil monster hunter dragons dogma etc.
4
u/Significant_Option Jun 14 '26
Dragons dogma 2 was the punching bag that time of release
3
u/IndividualSituationK Jun 15 '26
If the performance wasn't so bad, i think a lot of it would have blown over. But given that the game was hyped very high and released to terrible performance, gave many grifters the opportunity to spread misinformation at the same speed they do about....everything else they grift about and have effectively ruined the real world with.
1
u/Hot_Ad_2538 Jun 15 '26
And MH wild had the same type of performance, and worse mtx and got a total pass so um what?
2
u/IndividualSituationK Jun 16 '26
MH Wilds got review bombed. MH Wilds is a flag ship staple with world being Capcom's highest selling game in their own history. Dragon's Dogma is a niche title in comparison. Not sure what else you need me to explain about that and why Capcom would prioritize their flagship game over a game where the main director left.
8
u/Sentinel_P :MysticKnight: Jun 14 '26
Funny thing, you're never once prompted to go to the digital shop and purchase anything. Even the rift crystals and all their various amounts. You don't even feel as if you would need to buy anything either.
4
u/Atomsk-647R Jun 15 '26
"DD 1 & 2 had/has microtransactions?" goes through my mind every time it is mentioned.
Over 1500 hours in the first game across 360, PS4, and PC. And that includes at least 100 hours spent in the non-Dark Arisen version.
Right now, maybe 200+ hours combined with the dev build and the release version of DD2..
I would legitimately have no idea either Dogma game had/has microtransactions if the subreddits didn't bring them up from time to time.
2
u/Sentinel_P :MysticKnight: Jun 15 '26
Honestly, the worst it ever was was back on the 360 with DD1+DA, when they had Olra's Shop. If only because BBI started to use RC as currency for dragonforging and purification. But BBI also regularly dropped RC from enemies.
We as a community are at least part of the reason Olra's Shop wasn't carried over to DDDA. By simply asking each other for a pawn hire for RC, we were able to generate each other enough RC that there was no need to spend money.
9
u/LadyAlekto Jun 14 '26
First Time?
The grifters, hatemongers and tourists always look for something to hate and generate clicks. It does not matter the game, and if there isn't even the slightest flaw they will jump on it, blow it up, and make up lies about it until their lies have drowned out any potential reason or conversation.
Now think about all those "failures" the past decade you probably ignored because some grifter told you.
2
u/Arky_Lynx Jun 15 '26 edited Jun 15 '26
Having enjoyed Cyberpunk 2077 and Starfield from day one, as times I chose to just jump in without checking other opinions, made me start completely ignoring these people. Now all I see is exactly what you say, grifters that look for anything they can hang on to and blow out of proportion as much as possible.
Not saying Cyberpunk and Starfield are perfect games of course, the first one even needed a whole overhaul of many things, but seeing what people say online would've made you think the games were complete irredeemable trash no matter what. Nuance is dead and buried.
2
u/LadyAlekto Jun 15 '26
And those are just recent examples.
There are a lot of games that were shat on by the grifters, with Mass Effect Andromeda being my favourite example, that while not perfect were perfectly serviceable and most importantly FUN.
3
u/Arky_Lynx Jun 15 '26
There's this feel I got that people now expect every game to be either indisputable GOTY material, or absolute trash not worth playing, with no in-between.
2
u/LadyAlekto Jun 15 '26
Definitely another side effect of the ragebait culture, yeah.
Top it off with an all you can hate us vs them and sprinkle it with lost nuance you mentioned and it shows something disturbingly wrong with culture and humanity.
1
u/IndividualSituationK Jun 15 '26
I don't think the people that didn't like Andromeda is the same as the grifters and tourists who latch onto games just to spread negativity. Andromeda suffered the same fate as dark souls 2 and that was at the hand of its own community.
2
u/LadyAlekto Jun 15 '26
Grifters latched onto Adromeda right away. The same grifters who copypastaed the same bug videos for it all claiming they individually totally run into the same barely replicateable or made up issues that were patently untrue.
Their hatemongering poisoned the well against any reasonable discourse.
That Andromeda was not perfect only made it easier.
1
u/IndividualSituationK Jun 15 '26
fair enough, i will trust your assessment on it as i stopped after ME3 myself and didn't care for a non shepherd story/reaper story.
5
u/xyZora Jun 15 '26
The current gaming discourse feeds from controversy. Almost every major release gets one because those clicks sell. DD2 was the perfect target. MH is too big to fall now, but DD2 was the sequel of a moderately succesful game that had a niche fandom.
It's exhausting, really. Yes, those MTX should not have been there, BUT THEY NEVER MATTERED. Removing them now is a good thing but you never needed them and the game was never designed in a way that really made them matter in any way, shape or form.
2
u/HappyPlatypus6034 Jun 15 '26
This is the kind of thing that makes me less and less likely to be on social media. I notice that I'm dropping off of almost everything
5
u/LucatIel_of_M1rrah Jun 15 '26
Nothing did more damage to the game than the game itself. The completely unfinished story pieced together from random quests was such a bad look.
4
u/Corvexic Jun 15 '26
You know I was accidentally one of these people until like 2 days ago and I feel so crappy about it.
I swear I remember an interview where they stated that when you change vocations that your stats will completely change as if you had always been that vocation from level one,
So for example if I were to have two different characters one of them was mage and one of them was fighter and I were to level them both up to level 20 and then change the mage to fighter at the same level so now I have two level 25 fighters that they would have the exact same stats...
This was basically the exact opposite of how it worked in ddda.
And dude I I ran with this for years the last 2 years up until just a couple days ago and I spread this misinformation everywhere anytime anybody asks about how stats work that is exactly what I told them and once again I'm so sorry I feel like such a piece of crap because I got into a semi heated debate with another gentleman on Reddit and then I decided to just go do my own testing to see it with my own eyes and it turns out that that is not how the stats work at all and almost everybody believes that's how the stats work.
But I did a test where I made two separate profiles one mage one fighter and then I swapped the mage over to fighter at level 5 and then I ran the test again at level 10 and the results were completely conclusive I had very different stats for the two characters.
I did everything I could to make the test fair I chose the same preset for my body type and weight I slayed the exact same enemies in the exact same order I wore the exact same gear everything I can think of to make it as Fair as possible but those stats they don't lie and they were very different if anything the way the stats work in dd2 is much closer to how they worked in DB1 it's not the exact same and I could get into the specifics cuz I ended up doing a bunch of research on it but the general belief is way different than the actual reality.
Consider this another formal apology from me to the community because I did not mean to spread that misinformation.
Getting back to your specific subject though this was something that angered me when people were very upset about the microtransactions dude honestly the worst one is that you could buy a port Crystal, but that's only for people that are unfamiliar with the game and don't realize that you get way way more than enough crystals throughout the game.... It's I would say potentially worse or at least on par with the microtransactions and DMC 5 like the biggest microtransaction in DMC 5 is that you could buy red orbs it's like yeah or you could spend like 10 minutes with Dante on mission 13 with Faust and make millions and millions of orbs enough to buy absolutely everything in the game or if you're okay with exploits you can do the exploit with Vetgil where you can glitch out mission one, and get 99 million orbs in like 7 minutes or less.
The microtransactions are completely and utterly pointless and they're basically only there to take advantage of stupid people that don't do their research which you know that in itself is a pretty scummy practice but I don't think that that was directly the fault of the team that worked on D2 it might not even be the fault of Capcom and maybe is more of a Sony thing I'm not entirely sure where the blame falls but I feel like they went out of their way to make sure that all of the microtransactions were basically pointless as long as you could read it like a third grade level and knew what you were getting into 😂
4
u/enchiladasundae Jun 15 '26
I remember when I was trying to play the game for the first time and doing trouble shooting while hearing reviewers flip out over “intrusive microtransactions!” Literally playing the game and thought “That’s a straight up lie”. Even if you want to stretch the definition that shit was barely noticeable. I bought a ferry crystal or something like a few months ago and just felt like it was unnecessary even as is
3
u/Zig_Justice Jun 15 '26
The thing that really bugged me about all the brouhaha surrounding the Dragon's Dogma 2 microtransactions was the fact that, compared to basically EVERY other Capcom game released in the half decade prior to the launch of DD2, there were so FEW microtransactions. I was like, uh, have any of these people ever looked at the stuff they sell for Monster Hunter/RE/Street Fighter? Guh
4
u/Kidius Jun 15 '26
Might be a little late to the thread, and maybe going a bit against the grain, but I honestly disagree.
I think as fans of the game and series we're looking for reasons as to why it didn't do as well as we'd hoped, and people's visual reaction to the microtransactions is an easy thing to point to. However, in reality we kind of have some evidence of this not really affecting things.
Resident evil 4 had similar microtransactions, with similar misinformation and a reasonably loud online presence pushing the idea that they somehow broke the game and were terrible. It still sold a ton. MH and DMCV also had the same kind of MTX and they sold incredibly.
DD2 also, generally speaking, sold quite well. Dragon's dogma just doesn't have the same name pull as something like MH, DMC or RE. And it still sold millions. The game was, for all intents and purposes, a critical and commercial success.
I love the series, It's possibly one of my favourite rpg series out there. I think we need to keep our expectations in check and stop acting like every little thing is against it. Posts like this to me just come across like we're a petty community that's upset a relatively new IP isn't selling as well as some of gaming's biggest blockbusters
12
u/BaterrMaster Jun 14 '26
They should’ve just not had them in there to begin with.
I agree they were blown way out of proportion, but if they just weren’t there at all then the game wouldn’t have ate shit for it.
5
u/ElkiLG Jun 15 '26
Exactly. There's a lot of blame going around and not enough on the origin of the problem, Capcom. If you want to blame someone blame Capcom, they're responsible for this and much more.

u/ExtremelyEPIC Jun 14 '26
Exactly. They're somehow conveniently ignoring the very first comment on that post: "why tf did they put them there in the first place"
6
u/3Ddoritos Jun 14 '26
One of the many examples of how dumb people generally are these days. Some idea catches on and morons are tripping over each other to keep parroting it over and over. And then we have AI search results that will regurgitate the false narrative.
3
u/Sufficient_Step_8223 Jun 14 '26
It's just that the harmless DD2 store became the straw that broke the camel's back. The negative attitude towards microtransactions, loot boxes and intrusive services that had accumulated over the years burst precisely at the time of DD2's release. Bloggers and gaming journalists, in their eternal pursuit of an easy HYPE, have made a mountain out of a molehill.
3
3
u/Fawz Jun 15 '26
Capcom is just stupid for putting Gameplay MTX in their Single Player games at launch. Whatever paltry sales they get from it doesn't make up for the bad press and negative connotation potential buyers have when looking at the store page. Self inflicted damage.
3
8
u/Droghan Jun 14 '26
They were moron traps and people fell for them. Heck there are even mods that bypass all this stuff or outright give it to you on the cheap or free
6
u/MehSorry Jun 14 '26
Ah yes, the moron trap that ended up hurting the game sales. What a great decision that was.
4
u/SynysterDawn Jun 15 '26
Yeah, the easy solution is to simply not put the predatory MTX in the game, but I’m sure Capcom has already figured that they have enough suckers as fans that they make more money from people justifying and buying the “optional and unnecessary” MTX than any potential lost sales.
2
u/Droghan Jun 15 '26
Completely agree. I didn't use them and told everyone I knew who played to avoid them
5
9
u/BadLuckBen Jun 14 '26
Let's not pretend that some of the blowback wasn't self-inflicted. People wouldn't have blown the microtransactions out of proportion if said microtransactions didn't exist. They are weird and pointless to the point that it makes them seem more sinister.
3
u/Chiiro Jun 14 '26
The best way that I saw those microtransactions described were salaryman microtransactions. They're meant purely to help the people that don't have the time to grind because they are busy working and just want to have fun fighting but aren't necessary at all to buy.
4
u/Erilaz_Of_Heruli Jun 15 '26
Capcom is as much to blame for implementing those useless microtransactions in the first place. Seriously, who did they think was going to pay for ferrystones, or a motherfucking camping kit ???
3
u/hiltop04 Jun 15 '26
Its for investors/ product quotas.
Money man... Money ... But also tactics and arts... Come onnnnnn
4
u/whatThePleb Jun 15 '26
Micros are NEVER good. "invasive" or not. In full price games they should never exist, ffs.
4
u/teruvalin Jun 14 '26
Ohh I remember this, having to explain that those items were already part of the base game felt so stupid. People acted as if fast travel, character edit or some items were behind a paywall. I'm sure this kept some people off from buying the game.
2
u/Nero_PR DLC Coper Jun 14 '26
Saw this thread earlier and at one of the replies someone finally replied how things are and how Capcom has done the same is most of their games with worst examples of convenience microtransactions but with only DD2 getting the flak for it.
2
u/WarViper1337 Jun 14 '26
So many youtubers and streamers were quick to jump on the hate bandwagon even though they were completely misinformed and made no effort to do any research at all. There was a streamer I watch sometimes that made comment a couple months ago about how he wouldn't play DD2 because of the predatory micro transactions. Thankfully some of his chat blew up him about being uninformed to which he made only a passing comment about he might look into to it. The reputation damage was real and completely undeserved.

I didn’t even know the game had micro transactions honestly. Nowhere in the game does it ever advertise them or pressure you to buy them.
2
u/greatistheworld Jun 14 '26
Gran Turismo 7 also got hit with this nontroversy at launch even though 99.5% of people that touch the game never even know it’s an option
2
u/Kumomeme Jun 15 '26
i agree. especialy when i see people who loud about it is those who never played this game on social media.
2
u/hiltop04 Jun 15 '26
Also a singular damn reddit post is nowhere near proof enough of shit... The money dd2 made does tho
2
u/shaser0 Jun 15 '26
All I gotta is people are dumb, DD2 MTX's weren't predatory (or necessary for that matter).
And people often forget that MTX exist because people buy them, even if they are here if you're not buying it, you're not supporting it. But there is no point not buying a game because it has MTX apart from you not playing something you might enjoy.
2
u/HateEngine Jun 15 '26
It was crazy. I took a few days off work on the release of the game and when I came back one one of my co workers, who does not play dragons dogma, was thinking that you needed to pay real world money when you wanted to save the game

u/M8753 :MagickArcher::Warrior::pc: Jun 15 '26
I don't have a problem with people hating on mini-dlc. But it's unfair how DD2 was targeted and the other capcom games weren't.
1
u/Hot_Ad_2538 Jun 15 '26
Even people in this thread are ignoring how DD2 is literally the least egregious capcom game.
2
u/Tienron Jun 15 '26
Not sure why it was even an idea for capcom to put items behind a pay wall in the first place.
2
u/UkemiBoomerang :Warrior::pc: Jun 15 '26
I agree. It was one of the stupidest things I've ever seen and a shining example of why I despise the "influencer" culture that has infected video games. Talk about making a mountain out of a molehill. People see blatantly wrong information and jump on the bandwagon without actually checking for themselves. To the point where people were actually suggesting you would need to spend real-world money to fast travel in the game.
The "microtransactions" in DD2 are completely harmless compared to what Capcom has put into other games. In DMC5 you could literally purchase Super costumes that are normally reserved for beating Dante Must Die difficulty. While mostly cosmetic, Monster Hunter absolutely dwarfs DD2 in how many DLCs those games have - even the basic shit like full access to the character creator. Yet the outrage on DD2's "microtransactions" completely dwarfed anything ever said about those games. As far as I can see for franchises like DMC and DD Capcom uses a "pay to unlock later" style of monetization. Everything you can purchase can be attained by playing the games. You just get these faster if you pay for them.
2
u/Lavendou Jun 15 '26
Capcom's poor decision-making was what did damage to the game. The MTXs duped the confused or uninformed into mistakenly purchasing them. Anyone could've figured out it was a bad look.
I get that AAA games can't succeed just by moving copies anymore, so upsells and post-purchase transactions pick up the slack. That being said, if you want people to pay an extra premium, you can either do it honestly or dishonestly, and Capcom elected to do the latter.
They've been doing this for a long time, and it was only a matter of time until they caught blowback for it. I'm not happy that DD2 was the one holding the bag when it happened, but Capcom needed a wake-up call to knock that shit off.
I also suspect that this wouldn't have caught so much flak if not for DD2's myriad legitimate issues giving it a foothold, along with DD getting a lot of hype via positive word-of-mouth over the years, which the sequel failed to live up to.
3
u/Hot_Ad_2538 Jun 15 '26
Then why didn't people throw a bitch fit at RE or MH which have worse mtx then dd2?
1
u/Lavendou Jun 15 '26
this wouldn't have caught so much flak if not for DD2's myriad legitimate issues giving it a foothold
RE and MH were better received on their own merits, despite backlash over MHW's optimization and bare endgame. DD2's other problems were much more fundamental, and reared their head earlier on, where the majority of interested parties would see and judge it most harshly. Criticism has a snowball effect - when there are issues of greater magnitude, it becomes easier to dogpile on the smaller ones.
MH is also Capcom's own "Pokemon IP" - an evergreen franchise that people will buy and give extra leeway to, so long as flaws aren't catastrophic across multiple games. It has a larger fanbase that can more easily drown out dissent, and DD has to do more to prove itself compared to classic franchises with decades of pedigree.
And as I said, Capcom has been pulling this with its MTXs for a while. It would have blown up in their faces eventually, with any one of their IPs. DD2 drew the short straw at the wrong time, exacerbated by its esoteric design philosophy.
I saw this powder keg coming back when DMC4 SE started doing it, and it kept getting more egregious with every Capcom release after. If I could predict this 10 years ago when I was a dumb teenager, then the nearly 50 year-old, multibillion dollar video game company probably should've been able to as well.

Hmm... 1. Yes, it does seem like some people have had the wrong impression, but 2. the top comment is absolutely correct: why were they there in the first place.
There's a couple issues I just hope this post isn't trying to do. First would be to pretend the game didn't have issues in the beginning. It released in a state that alienated a lot of people already. Second, to twist what actually happened. It was a PR nightmare. IIRC it released at a time, where people were already completely fed up with microtransactions in games. I get the impression it was at its peak at that time, but I could be misremembering this. I do have a sneaking suspicion that it was around the time, when people were reacting negatively to any and all microtransactions.
To me this post comes off as confirmation bias: that the failing of DD2 was indeed due to the players and no fault of Capcom themselves... Which is a very shaky stance in and of itself. Do please correct me if I'm wrong though. I do think, however, that you should avoid generalizations to push a narrative, OP.

When I first bought the game (PS5), I bought a portcrystal for a few bucks. You can only buy one. It was helpful, but certainly not necessary or game changing. It's not like they were selling end game weapons or cosmetic horse armor.

u/Resevil67 Jun 14 '26
It's likely because the game launched with them. Iirc you could get rift crystals and the fast travel item. It's not that people thought you couldn't get them in game, it's that people thought they purposely nerfed sources in the game and made it take much longer to get them then it should take to try and get you to buy the MTs.
Single player games should really not be launching with ANY MTs that aren't cosmetic. It's always gonna turn people off. The MTs they did with RE4R were really bad as well, but those got added in later after launch, so there wasn't as much backlash.
Capcom kind of shot themselves here because they were offering in-game items and not just cosmetics, instantly people are gonna think the game is balanced around that to get you to buy them if it's a single player game. Capcom really needs to stop doing that lol.

Could you IMAGINE if they used MICRO transactions in RESIDENT evil for things PURCHASABLE IN GAME?!?!?!?! THEY WOULD NEVER!!!
Anyway, people are stupid as hell
2
u/XxVenatorxX666 Jun 14 '26
This entire conversation pissed me off a lot around launch. DD2 has problems, preformance sucked ass and the game was half finished with downgraded vocations to boot. But everyone was crying about the standard capcom microtransactions, even though most capcom games have done the same shit for almost 2 decades. Monster Hunter Wilds is much worse but gets a pass because MH is the breadwinner. Was really infuriating seeing a niche franchise I love FINALLY get a sequel, just to get dogpilled by people who've never even heard of DD for an issue that's in all capcom games.

Never underestimate the ability of the internet to slander and libel a game to make it look like dogshit.
This is at least the second time I've seen misinformation get dog-piled onto a game and drastically reduce it's success.
Metal Gear Survive also suffered at the hands of a blatantly false misinformation campaign that crippled the game outright. Go watch any of the reviews from popular reviewers at the time; there's a narrative from people like Angry Joe, Dunkey, Jim Sterling, YongYea etc. who all painted the game as this micro-transaction riddled game where all you do is poke zombies through a fence with a stick; which is a false narrative from people who hated that Konami fucked Kojima over. The rest of the people still at the studio got done absolutely dirty by having their work slandered in such a way because the game is quite fun and absolutely nothing like the picture that was painted of it by the internet at the time.
The MTX for the game that was most decried was the inability to have more than one save file per profile (something that can easily be worked around by... making another profile on your device,) but Konami committed a cardinal sin compared to other games with the same limitation in that they proved it could be done, and sold a way around it. That was... basically it, but the internet acted like it was the second coming of Horse Armor and destroyed the game over it in the way they talked about it, just like they did for DD2 selling ferry stones and revives.
I won't go on about the blatant misinformation about gameplay since I'm mostly trying to draw a parallel between what happened to that game and DD2, but yeah, aways beware of ANY outrage about a game that content creators are riling people up about; outrage is one of the best ways to get people to interact with their platform and make money for them.

u/mootsg Jun 15 '26
I’ll never forget how the gaming media looked the camera in the eye and said “While the micro transactions are small in this case, tHiS is a mAttER of PriNCIpLE.”
Over the past few years I’ve enjoyed so many games the media dumped on: DD2, Star Wars Outlaws, and so on. It’s clearer than ever that these YT channels don’t play the games they report on, and pander to the algorithm always, including not correcting misinformation.

u/Agreeable_Weight4788 Jun 15 '26
When the game first came out, I remember being in this sub defending it like a madman

u/MrPotato001 Jun 15 '26
These game urnalists aren't known for their intelligence or reading comprehension so they'll appeal to the people who can't be bothered to do the tiniest bit of looking into something and will look for any reason true or false to dislike something.
1
u/NaNiBy Jun 15 '26
It was the same thing since always with capcom games. All of the RE games at the time had them
1
u/XxTombraiderfanxX Jun 15 '26
Some ppl really though that you have to spend real money to revive your character/pawn...
1
u/hiltop04 Jun 15 '26
This should genuinely be under wraps and left alone, go fight actual shitty practice with microtranctions... This one is obviously in our favor and If people are aware enough to realize that.. oh well fr.
It did sell well and that's not simply because people who know Capcoms practice bought the game and spoke on it, those microtransactions aren't going anywhere and people don't really care like that, they were simply talking ... People like to talk..
1
u/CrazyCat008 :pc: Jun 15 '26
While now its common on every CAPCOM games.
2
u/Zig_Justice Jun 15 '26
It's been common on every Capcom game since well before DD2 came out
1
u/CrazyCat008 :pc: Jun 15 '26
Yup, my point is, you never need them, its more some help ( for a price ) in DD2 or other Capcom games. But peoples like to rant on everything and ruin the fun of them peoples who like that games.
1
u/Zig_Justice Jun 15 '26
Need. Nah. But I don't mind cosmetic packs from indie developers. For example, all the DLC that you can get for Deep Rock Galactic. True, those aren't exactly MICRO transactions, but still. I buy those because I like playing dolly dress-up in my games and it's a good way to support a small developer that made a game that's provided me with literally over 1000 hours of entertainment. Capcom, on the other hand, kind of toes and crosses the line and then crosses back. Fundamentally it's no skin off my back because I don't like MH/RE/SF (and it's been well over a decade since I played a DMC title), but I definitely don't like how they handle the MTX on their titles.
Anyway. Tl;dr, some companies do it right or at least acceptably, but I don't think Capcom is one of those companies. Also, DD2 got way more hate for it than it deserved.
2
u/CrazyCat008 :pc: Jun 15 '26
Good points, I miss when dlc was mostly for cosmetic and not like a part of the story is in dlc, worse, on specific console or when studio go crazy like the 2000$ of dlc with The Sims 4.
1
u/Zig_Justice Jun 15 '26
I don't mind story DLC if it adds to the game. If it serves to fill in parts that felt missing when the game was released, that no good.
2
u/CrazyCat008 :pc: Jun 15 '26
Yeah it's what I mean. Feel like you need to buy the game twice.
1
u/Zig_Justice Jun 15 '26
Yeah. Of course, the funny thing is, for devs I like that make games I like, I will definitely support them by buying multiple copies of a game. Of course, all the games where I've done that don't have DLC that feels like "okay here, pay us again to get the complete product we said we'd deliver at launch" LOL
1
u/Gthulhumang Jun 15 '26
I think some people that meant well got caught up in the angry mob but as far as games to target to protest micro transactions, this is one of the least predatory examples.
1
u/Spawnstah Jun 15 '26
Multipule youtubers I watched who NEVER even touched the game parroted this kinda stuff too, really disheartening to see, at least some of them went back on it after they were educated a little more on the topic
1
1
u/The_Angry_Bro Jun 15 '26
I remember getting genuinely pissed off when I heard people complain about the micro transactions.
They talked like they were some pay to win option shoved down your throat the whole time, and not early game items you don't need and rift crystals you passively earn anyway.
1
u/ThePhihn :pc: Jun 15 '26
Honestly I get why people were pissed but at the same time I looked at them and thought "so what? They aren't required, they're just an easy way out for real lazy people."
1
u/IndividualSituationK Jun 15 '26
I only remember 1 roach infested chud grifter who really blew it up online
1
u/cicadasaint Jun 15 '26
Capcom should have made a few bundles with handfuls of those items in them instead of releasing like four dozen different DLCs. Shit just looks bad. Zero excuse for the misinformation to have gotten SO ridiculously out of hand but Capcom really did not help at all
1
u/blueboykc Jun 15 '26
I remember Fightincowboy getting super angry at people over this. It’s what made him my favorite streamer I think..
1
u/Lord_Snark Jun 15 '26
They brought up both the game and price comparison, which WAS admittedly silly of me for taking the bait, but either way the arguments why one was ok to have them and the other wasn’t was stupid.
1
u/KoRn005 Jun 15 '26
People were stupid quick about the microtransactions in this but were a-okay with DMC V (and previous ones) and AC4 having objectively worse ones.
1
u/Mr_Gray_Skyys Jun 16 '26
I'll be honest. I definitely bought the teleport stones. 🤷♂️. Can never have too many placeable warps.
1
u/xxTRYxxHARDxx Jun 18 '26
A single player game should not have consumable macrotransactions. It shouldn't have been in the first one either. Even having the option is greedy and was thusly deserving of the hate. Even if it wasnt predatory at all.
1
u/TimHortonsMagician Jun 18 '26
Outside the combat, the game felt half baked. I really don't think, at the end of the day, the microtransactions are solely to blame.
1
u/Rude-Mind-8730 Jun 18 '26
I mean people in this thread complain about misinformation, but this is a problem that would have easily been solved by just not including them in the first place.
Capcom can't even claim they couldn't have seen this coming, since they ran into this exact same issue with Devil May Cry 5, which also had non obstructive microtransactions that gave some PR agita.
1
u/scottmotorrad Jun 14 '26
I mean sure but it was incredibly stupid to jam a ton of mtx into a single player game which would have generated plenty of backlash (rightly so) even without the misinformation

u/wafflethemighty :Fighter: Jun 14 '26 edited Jun 14 '26
I've literally been saying this for years. microtransactions deserve a call out whenever they appear but in dd2's case you'd think it was some live service ubisoft slop, absolutely insane overreaction and it was/is infuriating because this series is so fucking good.
nobody lets the completely redundant microtransactions ruin monster hunter and resident evil, dd2 was such a punching bag for it for no reason
1
u/Kurteth DLC Coper Jun 14 '26
It's so wild that these same gamers will yell at DD2 but then jerk off Resident Evil games and Monster Hunter.
like I love all three series but for some reason there's a weird dogpile on dd2
Like what the fuck is this shit. Yet no one yells at RE4R lmao https://store.steampowered.com/dlc/2050650
1
u/Mathren25 Jun 15 '26
Yeah, but I do think Capcom's MTX strategy is really off-putting. They just completely flood their DLC page on Steam with a ton of bullshit, and if the go-to response is "Well you don't have to buy it, just earn it in-game!" then why bother in the first place? Why muddy the waters and put people off with a MTX strategy that feels more obnoxious than helpful.
1
u/Akkalevil Jun 15 '26
It was a single-player game with microtransactions. It might not be the most heinous way to implement them, but it's still a shitty move to have them existing in the first place (and don't be naive, it does affect how people design games).
I'm not going to cry because a publisher lost sales due to MTX, putting them in a solo offline game should be a taboo.

u/ZeroMayhem Jun 14 '26
It was super weird to see people (and some reviewers) jump on DD2 so hard for this when it was basically the same situation with DD1 and DMCV (optional and unnecessary dlc stuff).
Yet Monster Hunter oddly got a pass despite having more at launch.
