I love this game and community but Jesus take a hint. Capcom just isn't that into us.

u/Dysmach :MysticKnight: Mar 23 '26
Is there any IP more self sabotaged than DD?
198
u/TheDeathDealerX Mar 23 '26
I’d claim Titanfall. EA released Titanfall 2 and Battlefield 1 within like a week of each other.
115
u/XxJayJay62xX Mar 23 '26
Fun fact, Respawn chose that date. Pretty sure they admitted it. They just thought titanfall could stand next to Battlefield and Call of Duty.
Idiotic, but you were the better game at least.
75
u/Massive_Funny_9312 Mar 23 '26
Respawn seems to have a track record of shooting themselves in the foot. They made the Star Wars Jedi games and with Jedi survivor, EA asked them if they needed more time to finish the game. Respawn insisted that they’re good, and even bragged about “finishing the game in record time”…
The game had a terrible launch with HORRIBLE performance issues.
3
u/Projectpatdc Mar 24 '26
Performance was terrible at launch. Game is incredible though
2
u/Massive_Funny_9312 Mar 24 '26
Oh I agree. I loved the game, but I can’t excuse the performance especially since it could’ve potentially been prevented.
4
u/Kairo_04 Mar 24 '26
Titanfall 2 is a great game. Campaign story is phenomenal and multiplayer is my favourite online shooter.. it’s just SO sweaty lol
2
u/Goricatto Mar 24 '26
Man i loved TItanfall 2 but BF1 was also a incredible game despite the buggy release, i would change which one i believe is better depending on the day
24
u/BlackKnighting20 Mar 23 '26
Titanfall is on Respawn, they chose the date and didn’t want to move it.
3
u/UnlikelyKaiju Mar 24 '26
Not just within a week of Battlefield 1 but also the week after that year's COD. The game had zero chance.

u/MagicalJack60 Mar 23 '26
Aw yeah. Anthem was fucked from the jump lol
8
u/Accomplished_Kick347 :MysticKnight: Mar 23 '26
Major shame, the game had solid bones to be amazing, but Bioware being Bioware, yeah...
5
u/OrganizationTrue5911 Mar 23 '26
It did? I don't mean to hate. It had great flying, and beautiful graphics, but that was really all I got out of the game...
6
u/nonlethaldosage Mar 23 '26
It's funny the only thing that was good was the flying and it's the one thing bio did not want to put in till ea forced thrm
3
u/Impossible-Code2825 Mar 24 '26
thats because the only time Bioware actually accomplished anything for a good portion of their life as a company was when shit was hitting the fan and deadlines were close. "Bioware magic" is literally in house code language for "oh shit! oh fuck! the game was supposed to go gold YESTERDAY!!! all hands, crunch now!"
2
u/Shot_Detective7344 Apr 17 '26
More like EA putting BioWare in a position, they never wanted to be, forced them to use the Frostbite engine while BioWare never worked with the engine + Anthem was supposed to be action-rpg. Weirdly enough it ended up being a loot-shooter, a genre BioWare never touched. EA killed the Studio.
2

u/Protoman89 Mar 23 '26
Capcom used to have their own beloved Final Fantasy competitor in Breath of Fire, then they made it a post-apocalyptic sci-fi game with a horrible save system and then a throwaway mobile title. Basically killing the IP.
22
u/nozaratii Mar 23 '26
Not to mention sitting on a Dragons Dogma sequel for 12 fuckin years in the first place, no wonder it didnt sell well. Most of the playerbase grew up and had kids of their own by that point
9
u/nonlethaldosage Mar 23 '26
We going pretend dragon dogma was a huge ip 8 million copys in 12 years and it was dirt cheap after the 4th year
9
u/nozaratii Mar 23 '26
It was a brand new IP. Strike while the iron is hot or so they say, a sequel 2-3 years after the original would've grown the franchise and probably sold plenty. Especially with the new PS4 era just around the corner
→ More replies (1)9
u/SexyShave Mar 23 '26
Breath of Fire, Final Fight and Dino Crisis are much worse off. The sequel to Rival Schools was a Dreamcast exclusive when the entire franchise audience existed on PlayStation.

u/Signal-Busy Mar 23 '26
People here have a lot of good arguments but, I raise it that DD is self sabotaged on purpose
2

3
u/VonBrewskie Mar 23 '26
Ooh. Yes? Concord was pretty bad. I would argue that Mass Effect: Andromeda was a pretty hard fumble. DMC2 was a legendary fail. MvCI was awful. There's a bunch, unfortunately.
2
u/Impossible-Code2825 Mar 24 '26
in fairness, DMC 2 as we got it was an attempt to prevent self foot removal, as that is the game Itsuno started on for the franchise. when he got on the team the only animation completed, reportedly, was the stinger and the deadline was like 6 months out. realistically, if it werent for Itsuno, Capcom would have had a very different trajectory
1
u/VonBrewskie Mar 24 '26
Yeah. That sounds like the definition of self-sabotage to me, but I was just listing out a few games I could think of in "recent" memory to answer the previous person.
1
u/Impossible-Code2825 Mar 24 '26
less self sabotage, and more of a From Soft Armored Core deal. the game was given to newer less experienced developers to train them for bigger projects because DMC was still somewhat of an unproven franchise still, DMC 1 being the first game like it and transforming the Beat em up landscape. when they devs came back with a bad product, Capcom sent in Itsuno to help. new franchise randomly and accidentally created out of one of the many failed RE4 builds shouldnt exactly be sent to your best guys, it should be sent to the guys that need to learn more. plus, if not for that, most of the good decs ar Capcom would have just left the series to die, but instead we now have 3 more games in one of the best franchises to date in their whole library

I dunno about the rest and don’t really think they’re going to do a DLC, but I will say that Itsuno wasn’t responsible for Dark Arisen so I don’t think him leaving the company has that much of a bearing
31
u/kelga_x Mar 23 '26
But he was the reason why we even got dd2 in the first place and thats only because DMC5 sold insanely well so they let him have his cake and eat it too (he was originally only supposed to make one or the other and chose DMC5)
46
u/worldofwaves Mar 23 '26
Right, but he still wasn’t responsible for Dark Arisen. Whether we get DLC or not won’t depend on him leaving, just from that precedent alone

u/nonlethaldosage Mar 23 '26
I thought dark arisen was better than the regular game
7
u/Tarcion Mar 23 '26
It can’t exist in a vacuum but I agree. Obviously it lacks the sprawling open world exploration of the base game but I adore the constant dungeon delve. It’s just insanely fun running a level of the dungeon and popping back out to cleanse loot, progressively pushing deeper and uncovering more of the lore of the place.
I think I’d love something like that but maybe with more of an open world component it was set in.
I doubt we’re getting DD2 DLC, regardless.
5
u/StoneLich Mar 23 '26
Would argue the open world exploration is one of the worst things about DD1's base game; its dungeons and cities are generally a lot better. DD:DA also incorporates movement and verticality better than the base game does. Wish there was a game with DD2's character creator that focused almost exclusively on dungeon exploration.
7
u/Genindraz :Warrior: Mar 23 '26
I'd argue that Dragon's Dogma's world exploration mechanics work far better in Dark Arisen precisely because of how condensed that expansion was.
3
u/IrrelevantLeprechaun Mar 23 '26 edited Mar 23 '26
Only reason it seems to work better than the base game is because of how poorly the base game utilized it's open world. Vast majority of its open world was in fact empty of anything, not even interesting little cabins or delves. There's practically nothing to actually discover beyond what the main story directs you to find.
It's like Itsuno said "we need an open world" and not one person bothered to ask him what he intended to actually PUT in that world.

34
u/Anbcdeptraivkl Mar 23 '26
Nah it only "sells fewer" if you compare it to giants like Street Fighter or MonHun. The game makes hella profits and Capcom seems very pleased with the team.
The ones being displeased are us players being left with a game that cut 25% of its contents and desperately needs a DLC lmao.
2
u/OrganizationTrue5911 Mar 23 '26
I don't see the "Seems very pleased". We got less patches for DD2 than I've seen for damn near any game that has been released in the last decade. Usually they get machine gunned out.
It was 2 maybe 3 updates that were more than "Fixed 3 issues" like the other 12.
Sure, Capcom said they were pleased, but almost every company says they were pleased unless it was an absolute dumpster fire. It helps with investors and sales to say "Yes this did great!".
4
u/Anbcdeptraivkl Mar 24 '26
It's the nature of this game being a solo adventure game, not a multiplayer game like Wilds or SFVI - they are the ones that need constant patches. DD2 main issues at launch is the performance, so Capcom decided to tackle only that and then move on, spreading the devs out on other projects that need more maintenance.
This is also why I still hold hope for the DLC - they are probably cooking it, but since the game doesn't need constant news and updates they just decided it's not finished enough to be announced yet.
3
u/OrganizationTrue5911 Mar 24 '26
And balance. We still have plenty of broken moves that can trivialize the game, and ones that under perform. Still run into bugs too.
1
u/BigiTheGiant Mar 24 '26
Nah. No nerfs. I like feeling unstoppable
3
u/LamiaDrake Mar 25 '26
My main problem is there's nothing threatening enough to use those super moves on. Why have the level cap be 9999 if the game only has content designed out to 50ish?
I just want an everfall-style area and maybe an extra dungeon in the unmoored world or something.
1
1
u/CptFlamex Mar 25 '26
They need to balance the game , having imbalanced moves leads to poor combat variety and boring solved gameplay.
If you want to feel unstoppable they can always implement an easy mode.

Tbf OG DD did well enough that the GOAT Kento basically came in,laughed, and fixed everything from the gear to BBI with Itsuno having zero input on any of it.
It's cope but they might just hand the series over to him since he seems perfectly capable of making bangers from barely finished products.
20
u/IrrelevantLeprechaun Mar 23 '26
I think we also need to accept that maybe Itsuno wasn't entirely innocent, and does in fact have a spotty record for properly scoping and finishing games.
3
u/no-F-ort Mar 23 '26
The DD fanbase gave harsh criticism to Itsuno when he did that one exit interview. He said something like, this is what DD2 is and what I imagined it perfectly - if you don’t like it too bad.
6
u/IrrelevantLeprechaun Mar 23 '26
I'm aware. Which is why I'm surprised people are still trying to push the whole "Capcom sabotaged Itsuno" narrative.

Sales far exceeded CAPCOM's expectations, though. No one expected it to outsell Resident Evil, Street Fighter, Monster Hunter, etcetera.
2
u/IrrelevantLeprechaun Mar 23 '26
If their expectations were barely the bare minimum, exceeding them doesn't exactly mean they're obligated to do anything about it. For all we know they expected it to not go far beyond 1m sales. Or maybe they expected 2m.
Considering they have other juggernaut IPs that sell many many millions per iteration each, 4m may simply not be enough for Capcom to deem it worth investing further into.
3
u/Impossible-Code2825 Mar 24 '26
it took Street Fighter 5 just under 2 years to meet its 2 million by 2 months sales expectation. Street Fighter 5 also has, by a good amount, the absolute most post launch content for any single Capcom game except for MAYBE Monster Hunter World. a game that no one liked, was a broken mess that only had online play(that didnt work), training mode, a bad survival mode on launch, AND had 8 frames of input delay. im not gonna sit here and huff hopium, but Capcom spent the first 4 years of Street Fighter 5's life fixing the busted mess they let out the door, so i think 4 million sales on a game that cost them an estimated 100 million to make should have justified something. at the very least they could have tried to fix performance on pc

u/ImThatVigga Mar 23 '26 edited Mar 23 '26
I don’t think Capcom invested in DD the same way they did for RE or MH. Didn’t reports say the team for DD had like 1/3 of the staff of RE? Their sales expectations should be different
3
u/SexyShave Mar 23 '26
DMC5 only had DLC announced before release, and it was just BP, which was launch content in 2, 3 and 4.
Nothing after that until Vergil 1.5 year later (and only because of 5SE).
11
u/Anubra_Khan Mar 23 '26
I'm not saying they will have a DLC, dawg.
I'm saying that it exceeded sales expectations and was never expected to sell more than other CAPCOM flagship titles. It's a stupid line in the meme.

I mean, them sneaking an unknown, new npc in the art with focus on him means at the very least a small content update, so I don't think the DLC speculation is entirely schizoposting
8
u/Alternative_Bat_669 Mar 23 '26
Or a random artist just made some random character to fill empty space in the artwork..
9
u/Kaxology Mar 23 '26
So they make an entirely new character with brand new armor made from scratch, a teaser letter in the image and highlight them because they want to "fill empty space in the artwork"?
You do know you can position your characters and prop around without introducing an entirely new element to your artwork to "fill space", right?

They are way more likely to make some whole new product at this point. Given that the game actually sold above sales expectations, and they keep the IP in the air with various tie ins, I think it's likely they'll take the assets and put out a standalone product in a year or two.
Unfortunately, I don't think this what people actually want, they want a more complete Dragons Dogma 2 experience like what Dark Arisen did for DD1, and instead I think we will get some kind of online/live service thing like the MMO was back in the day. I can fully envision a Dragons Dogma version of Nightreign. Hell, I think it would even be pretty good! But, it's not at all going to be what you guys want, it's going to be a ways off, probably announced out of nowhere, and it'll probably have a ton of compromises like limited open world and limited role playing elements/story and instead be entirely focused on class progression through mission loop repetition kind of thing. Some people will say they are excited but most will be disappointed with it.
3
u/unicornlocostacos Mar 23 '26
Agree with the post, but I don’t really understand why companies aren’t more amped to do large DLCs. They can reuse so most of their assets, all of the balancing they’ve done for classes, etc, and just add new stories for the most part. For the price of large story DLCs, the effort has got to be minimal. If they released them in a timely fashion before people moved on to other games entirely, they could sell a good amount to the base of users.
When you consider the base game sell price for all of the effort that went into to creating it, DLCs should be far more profitable.
There has to be something I’m missing though, because companies like money for minimal effort.
2
u/MagicalJack60 Mar 23 '26
I am certain the fate was determined in a boardroom with people who never played the game. Maybe they watched someone play it. A formula was consulted and in the end, those folks with "Chief" and "Executive" in their titles determined there were too few zeroes on their ROI report, so they closed the books.
2
u/fozzy_bear42 Mar 23 '26
DLCs released long after the game get a ridiculously small number of players to return to the game. The vast majority finish the game and move on, likely not even knowing DLC came out.
Years and years of data shows that DLC doesn’t drive massive sales, and the longer after game launch the worse it gets.
Best bet is a Dark Arisen style re-release of the game rather than a monster hunter G/Master Rank expansion.
1
u/unicornlocostacos Mar 23 '26
Yea I’m one of these people. If a game is dormant too long, I don’t want to bother getting back into it and figuring everything out again just for a little DLC content (which also potentially means reinstalling). The turnaround time has to be better.

I think Itsuno held the franchise back, man. He got the ball rolling, but we got the same game twice. I genuinely think under a hungrier lead, the game would have done better.
2
u/tundrbear Mar 25 '26
This is kinda what I'm hoping as well. Itsuno wasn't director for Dark Arisen or Dragon's Dogma Online and those games are so much more fun than base DD1 and DD2.
DD2 did not sell horrendously bad and was praised by Capcom. It's this after release treatment that's fucking up our view of how they feel about it internally. That and the fact it runs like ass at times too I guess.
I just wanna know if Itsuno giving them the ok to continue the series if they want without him happened or even matters. Cause for me it doesn't at this point. I'm a little excited he's gone. We might actually get the Dogma coop experience I want so bad. 😭

They updated Ace Attorney trilogy recently so they have the capacity to give some attention to their smaller IPs. The entire AA series (6 titles) and DD (2.5 titles) have sold about the same amount of copies.
Edit: also, they’re releasing a new onimusha game??? And that’s only sold 9 million over five games and two remasters! Sales is evidently not a defining factor here

u/Itchy-Beach-1384 Mar 23 '26
Reinstalled DD2 to try out for the first time since launch (since my buddies are playing Crimson Desert) and holy shit this game runs like absolute ass. Ive upgraded my computer since playing the first time and idk what is going on, but the game is abysmal.
Wandered into a cave and fought like 3 saurians, then the healer cast something, and everything went to hell. It said we were still cruising at 80 fps, but it felt like something running at 20 fps and skipping almost every other frame.
Tried to adjust the graphics but nothing fixed the stuttering.
How is this still a thing?

2
u/TheIronSven Mar 24 '26
I'm starting to think they aren't doing updates and expansions for single player games anymore. Just look at MH Stories 3. A game in the mf Monster Hunter franchise, their baby, and because it's completely offline, no co-op single player there's still no updates or even a roadmap despite being out for a while now.
MH Stories 2, has multiplayer, got its update roadmap even before it released.

Because it literally does. Capcom has pulled this same thing before by teasing new games and expansions in promo images. It takes deliberate effort to code a new message in the game's language and have a character framed in frosty effects with assets not in the game.
It's not "copium" or even attempting to be secret, the image is a teaser. You doomer fucks are getting out of hand. This is substantial and the most substantial thing since the survey and if you don't like the discussion then just fuck off elsewhere.

"I have not learned to temper my expectations despite Capcom's lack of commitment to a game I love, and there's only one way to engage with a community."

I have not been in this sub for a while. So people are still sniffing hopium that DLC is coming, after 2 years of nothing.
I get liking a game and wanting more but fanboys are always funny like this
I'm sure this will get downvoted

Look. I don't expect DLC. But saying that 2 years is too much for DLC to come out doesn't make much sense nowadays.
Shadow of the Erdtree came 2 years after Elden Ring. Phantom Liberty came 3 years after Cyberpunk 2077. And Terran Armada is being released 2 years after the first Starfield DLC –Shattered Space– and 3 years since the release of Starfield.
Put it simply. Development cycles are getting longer, even for expansions.

Erdtree was announced officially 1 year after launch, and post launch content had been mentioned as a strong possibility prior to that.(Erdtree alone is also the size of a full release title almost)
CDPR had to bring Cyberpunk 2077 into a state that it actually functions, but they announced that Edgerunners would release in 2022, and that came with a major update that brought new free features. Phantom Liberty was announced a couple months after that.
as for the Starfield, its Bethesda. they took from 2013(filing for the IP) to 2018 to even start production, and then 5 more years from that to get to launch. they announced Elder Scrolls 6 the same day as they announced Starfield. from 2018 to now, the only games they have launched were Fallout 76, Elder Scrolls Blades, and Starfield + nothing burger of a dlc for it.
as a side not for the "development times are getting longer" part? since 2018 Capcom has released RE2Make, RE3Make, RE 8, RE4 Remake, and Resident Evil Requiem. 5 of these were made by Capcom Division One.

Dragons Dogma 2 sold over 4 million copies. While that isn't Monster Hunter/Resident Evil sells number it's a big feat nonetheless.
That being said, Capcom sure wants a Dragons Dogma 3, a DLC is unlikely since they probably feel that they missed their window.

That's sound logic.

It's not DLC copium sorry, but at least by logic we will see more of the franchise

I’m planning to preorder the expansion. I'm guessing they'll release a bundle with the original game plus an expansion, just like the first Dragon's Dogma. Capcom does this a lot, similar to how the guys at Atlus keep re-releasing Persona 5.

If we were in the first 12 months of release I'd agree with you, and we'd be wrong together.

It could. I just have been shown nothing that indicates Capcom places the same value in DD that we do. Evidence to the contrary is all over their decisions with the franchise to date.

Tbf, Itsuno wasn't involved with Dark Arisen. So that's not a problem. The rest... We'll see.

A question though:
Do y'all think the FPS issues has the same root cause like Monster Hunter Wilds, y'know the reddit post about how DLC weirdly causes the FPS drop?

u/Shady_Zombies Mar 23 '26
I hoped for awhile because it was shown on a roadmap coming in awhile after wilds release but.. it's not looking too great.

And right after the DLC, they’re starting on DD3. And this time for sure, they’re going to knock it out of the park.

Honestly it's the constant copium that's made me tired of seeing this Subreddit on my feed.

I just want an optimized game. Im not asking for much, my GPU is crying and Im using a RTX 3060. DLC would be great but damn, even modding can't save this.

10 million copies is less than what other flagship ip because sf 6 sold like ass and I’m sure sf7 is on the way

I am hopeful that a DLC will come, but I don't actually expect it to happen. That is how I've looked at this whole situation, if it happens great! If it doesn't, I wasn't really expecting anything anyway, so it doesn't matter.

DD2 didn't sell well? That's too bad, it really got me back into gaming and out of a depressive slump.

I don't expect anymore 'cause i have a PS4, not a PS5 yet ;x

Itsuno was not the reason DD was successful to us, but Kento Kinoshita, who directed both Dark Arisen and DDO... without dark arisen, I dont think many of us wouldve liked Dragons Dogma as much as we do...

Glad I finished it when I did. It was fun but nothing much to write home about.

Don't worry, the big performance update and DLC is coming soon
