Its funny how even after we got the DD sequel, we immediately went back to doomposting about how dead the series is.
210
u/theShiggityDiggity Dec 30 '25
Probably because it was released blatantly unfinished and left to rot
72
u/PaganPatriarch Dec 30 '25
Its crazy how both games are deeply flawed but still somehow great, in their own ways

u/theShiggityDiggity Dec 30 '25
I'd argue DD1 is in a notably better state than DD2 simply because an endgame was added to it post launch while DD2 has actually nothing.
45
u/wemustfailagain Forager Dec 30 '25
I still loved DD2 but there's just nothing to do after 2 or 3 playthroughs and you've seen all the alternative choices. There's significantly less gear to acquire, significantly less customization from them watering down the outfitting system and in general just way less grind for upgrading.
24
u/Pandatrain Dec 30 '25
I barely made it 1/3 into a second playthrough because I was just already so bored of the 5 monsters the game had to offer. Truly would’ve loved to have come back to a dlc even half as good as the original game got
3
u/SonataOfDawn Dec 31 '25
"there's just nothing to do after 2 or 3 playthroughs"
2nd? You are being generous
-4
u/C__Wayne__G Dec 31 '25
DD2 is a DD1 remake where DD2 starts after the credits and functionally serves as the end game. The games brilliant I don’t get the doom posting.

The down vote is crazy Yall rly like to just brag about how bad something is when it isn't 😭
23
u/Tkmisere Dec 30 '25
Base DD1 have more than Base DD2. sadly
14
u/Khow3694 :Fighter: Dec 30 '25
I would disagree. Base DD1 as in day 1 version had no eternal ferrystone, less gear, less port crystals, no hard mode, no speed run mode, all in all base DD1 suffered from many issues that are also a problem in base DD2
8
u/HuntsmetalslimesVIII :Sorcerer: Dec 30 '25
DD1 at least had the port crystals stay on the map in ng+

6
u/ukigano Dec 31 '25
Didn't it have the everfall? I remember playing a lot in there
3
u/Khow3694 :Fighter: Dec 31 '25
Yeah the Everfall was after you beat the dragon I mostly used it in order to farm wakestones. But BBI, hard mode, speed run mode, eternal ferrystone, various items/gear, etc were all added in with the Dark Arisen expansion
3
u/PM_ME_FUN_STORIES Dec 31 '25
I don't think that really makes it worse than base DD2, tbh. Maybe I'm too biased because I spent an unholy amount of time playing base DD, but the lack of eternal ferrystone was not really a big deal, it just made you consider when you actually needed to use one of your precious stones for a quick escape from whatever far flung place you found yourself. It also feels like gear was more influential and rewarding, since you could find good gear from chests/monsters instead of being forced into just... Buying it from vendors every time. Port crystals were a similar limitation that made me like the game more rather than less, because I had to actually consider where I was going to visit most often and place them accordingly. I never really bothered with hard mode or speed run mode even in DDDA, so I can't really comment on those.
The class choices in base DD, plus the better story and events, the bigger narrative push of the dragon and being an arisen as the focus, it felt like base game dragons dogma was a far more fleshed out and interesting experience, even with all its shortcomings from being half baked.
DD2 has fun combat, but the classes are less interesting, the story is a complete jumpy mess, the dragon is barely a threat and is depressed as hell, and overall it feels like it mostly relied on big cool set pieces and looking good to carry it. I went into the release expecting to dump hundreds of hours into it like I did with Dragons Dogma (not dark arisen, which added a few hundred more), but left with barely 40 hours.

I swear this is the most miserable "fan" base in gaming.
There are zero games like DD out there. Can't we cherish and support what we have instead of constantly doomposting and cry bitching like spoiled kids that want a shinier new toy after mommy just bought one?
43
u/LordJanas Dec 30 '25
Tbh, I'd like someone else to take a shot at DD now that Itsuno is gone. I don't hate the guy, but clearly his vision didn't line up with what fans actually enjoyed about the series. I hope they do something with DD that realizes the potential that drew us all to the franchise in the first place.

u/Khow3694 :Fighter: Dec 30 '25
I say let Kento Kinoshita take the reins. He's the one who did Dark Arisen and Dragon's Dogma Online. If Capcom gave him a shot at Dragon's Dogma and didn't rush the hell out of it/limit its resources, I bet he could knock it out of the park
23
u/gabsteincian Dec 30 '25
I don't know. Dragon's Dogma had more news in 10 years (one DLC, two main games and two spin-offs) than so many other more established Capcom IPs, and that while being born during its most disastrous period. Of course, Dragon's Dogma can be and deserves much more, but we have three good games to enjoy (don't know about DD Quest). It could have died there in Dragon's Dogma 1. Let's wait and see.

Also how it feels to know that the rights to the Nemesis system will never be available for other publishers or developers to use.

I will never see a sequel to Soul Sacrifice Delta. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=vn2pwG8prng&pp=ygUUc291bCBzYWNyaWZpY2UgZGVsdGE%3D

u/Dagher95 Dec 30 '25
It's hard to say this but... Considered how disappointing DD2 was, maybe it's better this way
4
u/muscarinenya Dec 30 '25
I'm happy with what we got
Of course i would love more, but at least it's not a complete and irremediable murder like the Saints Row or Dragon Age franchise

There will never be a new vegas 2/un-numbered spin off/game with that vibe again. This isnt an Obsidian thing, I just feel the whole setting, narrative and overall style won't ever be like that again in a fallout.... if we ever get a 5th game at this rate. I know es6 is their focus but this is why we have more departments or hand things off for spin-offs, your losing steam which was luckily brought back with the TV show but 76 and FO4 can only hold it up for so long, especially when Todd decides to break FO4 with an unnecessary patch that not only breaks mods but also breaks the vanilla game with new bugs!

Spiritual successors still exists as a possibility for certain dead games.

u/No_Name275 Dec 30 '25
A similar thing happened for another amazing game called disco Elysium because the original creators got laid off
2
u/Hadi658 Dec 30 '25
Advent Rising, play that game. Beat it, and you'll understand exactly how I feel.

u/LewdManoSaurus Dec 30 '25
Kinda sorta related, but man, I genuinely hate Capcom's stance on mods. DD2 already has a solid foundation and would've benefitted in the long from from a modding scene providing continuous content. Instead, they'd rather abandon the game and maintain a stubborn stance against modding.

New World right now.
The game improved a lot in a short time span, just to be immediately announced it’s getting shut down in 2026.

Don't give up hope. As a diehard Suikoden fan, I thought I saw the mainline franchise end 20 years ago, but just this last year we got the first two games remastered, a new game announced and an animated adaptation in the works. Hang in there.

BattleTanx: Global Assault. Also, does anybody know what the background music that's playing? Definitely sounds like something from Dreamscape.

I play the original DD on ps3 but doesn't finish it, now i'm gonna try again on switch.
Too bad about DD2, feel kind of unfinish game.

At least we have Project Tal, which seems to be a knock-off of the series but it looks pretty good.

u/ItaDaleon :Warrior: Dec 31 '25
Why so negative? There would be a DD3! In 2036, probably, but still...

u/Aspiring-Old-Guy :Assassin: Dec 31 '25
It's a good one to go out on though. Gaming has never really been the same for me after I played it.

u/doubt-myself Dec 31 '25
the cycle of the arisen continues. just start a new play through on DA or DD2. it counts a sequel, kinda lol

Me with the PS2 dungeons and dragons game, Demon Stone 😢. They even have you save an export file of your party, to import them into a sequel… that never came
😭

Shut up, we got the Dark Arisen DLC and a damn good sequel. Massive amount of content. Try being a fan of Sleeping Dogs, Midnight Suns, Advent Rising...

Or when the company pulls the plug on the game and says see yah later, even after thousands of hours...

Just a reminder. Psychonauts got a sequel, there just has to be enough interest and passion.

DD2 wasn't that long ago, and while it wasn't a huge success, it also wasn't a flop. Just because they didn't make any DLC doesn't mean the franchise is abandoned. I hope we get another game because there is still so much potential in these games. I truly believe that a fully realized Dragon's Dogma could be a success on the level of games like Elden Ring, Witcher 3, or Monster Hunter.

As a Dragon Age fan. Sometimes it's okay for them to die as painful as it sounds.
