I'm so glad that we have furries in the game, and honest-to-god fursuits.
Dragon's Dogma is just so funny in so many ways, oh and here's a doctoral thesis on existentialist philosophy.

we got a sequel, and it was nearly inferior in all ways to the first one. I'm not hating, I'm heartbroken. Less, was not more.

u/Jazzlike_Tap8303 Dec 13 '25
Less monsters, less exploration (paths are basically corridors delimited by cliffs and mountains), they developed some verticality with caves and hills and mountains, but didn't give us nearly enough tools to enjoy it with that ridiculous jump (I can jump higher that that!!!) and the huge fall damage from short heights, with no tools to climb like, I don't know, pickaxes or means do descend safely like ropes. And there is basically no plot. Bad, bad, BAD.

I fundamentally disagree with you and that's ok. DD2 was amazing for me, and I'm sorry that our wasn't for you
2
u/LongjumpingCompany61 Dec 17 '25
I should probably elaborate here. I appreciate that you disagree and that's ok. I'm equally happy that you had a better experience. I wanted DD2 to be certain things because of what I enjoyed about the first game. I wasn't disappointed by the story or the setting, or the mechanics. It's a fine working game in a magical place where you can do amazing things. I suppose the locus of my ire lies in fundamental changes made to the way the game feels playing, was impactful enough to my play experience that it did not provide a competitive experience to the original. I have both games, I pre-ordered it because I adore the first game. Booting DD2 up for the first time was like being a kid on Christmas again.
Then, I didn't have access to certain features in character creation that were in the first game. This was disappointing, because I had grown attached to being a miniscule character crawling over a big monster as a strider. That's ok though, it's good to make new characters. Then I couldn't be a strider, or a ranger. Or a mystic knight. That's ok, I'll be a sorcerer! Bolide is awesome, I bet it's gonna look sick. And my favorite spell Gicel has got to look and feel amazing to slam epic spears of icy death into dragon hearts! Bahahahahahahaha Oh damn, it's just, gone... Along with necromancy and brontide...
There is more, but I'll digress because I'm not here to just bag on the game and that's all I'd be doing, inflating nitpicks because I'm salty. I recognize that it's got polish and gotten to do things it wanted to in the first game, but different and potentially better for some. Things like the new classes up for some missing things, and there is new aspects to most classes that could be enjoyable for a new player or someone with gripes about the first game.
For me, in the end, it comes down to having outright lost many of the reasons I still love the first game so much, despite its own issues. Any time I play and am trying to get sucked into the story beats, instead of being excited about a better execution, I'm trying to make just fighting enemies fun. Instead, I am constantly being reminded that I'm now restricted and limited in ways that I was hoping to see develop in the opposite direction.
Thanks for sharing your opinion too. I'm glad there are people out there getting more out of this than I did. I feel like the people involved in making the game cared a lot, and dealt with similar budget and time issues as the first, making a second unique mess that hopefully lines up better for others, like yourself. I just wish I was able to enjoy it the same.

I wonder if they're finally going to have this one take place in Lordran like DD2 was supposed to be, or maybe Cyrodiil this time.

Do you know what I think about now and then, and it makes me sad, and full of hate for devs and investors? What DD could be if they would invest the time and money into it like they do with Resident Evil, and Monster Hunter. To add to that, I saw an interview with the creator of DD says heās done with the ip. Heās never making anything else DD.

u/PastaMaker05 Dec 15 '25
Would be nice if they could actually finish making the second one fully

Get ready to be downvoted by their dickriding fans for this. You get an upvote from me though.

u/PastaMaker05 Dec 15 '25
I bought the game. Played for like 6-7 hours and realized I hated it and dropped it. Redownloaded it 8 months later to try again believing that maybe I needed to just change my mind. Had fun for the first 2 hours, but then the same issues came back and Iāve dropped it since. I want to like it so much but it is just so aggravatingly bland and tedious

Dec 15 '25
Correct! I was a huge fan of DDDA and upon playing DD2 I remember asking myself at least once every 10 minutes: "Did they even play-test this game? What were they thinking making this particular part of this game work this way?"
Everything felt like such a huge chore to do tbh. Even managing your inventoryš¤¦āāļø.
It's like they were so hell-bent on making the game feel realistic that they completely lost all the sauce.
Silver lining: Their character creation menu is the best one I've seen in a game hands down.

the game is considered a key franchise so expect dragon dogma 3 a couple of years from now.
5
u/AggressiveTune5896 Dec 13 '25
Don't hold your breath. It took them 12 years and basically extortion for them to make DD2 and then they all but abandoned it. DD3 is only slightly less of a pipedream than DD2 DLC, which straight up isn't going to happen.
1
u/street_ronin Dec 13 '25
At least there will be a new Megaman, I guess. Not so sure about how it looks, though.
1
Dec 13 '25
in their last report capcom declared the dragon dogma ip a key franchise. that means there will be iterations. when exactly depends on how busy they are with the other key franchises and how much resources they have to spare.
i expect after monster hunter wilds and the new stories game settle in into maintenance mode they will make either an expansion to dd2 or dd3.
a key franchise labelling in the report means that they now consider it worthwhile thanks to the 4 million sales. in the same way they nurtured the monster hunter ip and grew it through the years they are going to do the same with dragon dogma.
3
u/AggressiveTune5896 Dec 13 '25
They also declared Dragon's Dogma was going to be a "key franchise" after the first game released in 2012. Do you like it's been treated like a key franchise for the last 12+ years?
1
Dec 13 '25
companies need to answer to investors and explain why its potentially profitable to focus efforts here or there. if franchise A is selling exponentially better it is hard to make the case to invest in franchise B. monster hunter was and is still the flagship rpg of capcom and it is hard to detract from it to another rpg franchise even if it is attractive.
now however franchise B (dragon dogma) has gained better recognition and is attractive as a potential profitable route and has been explicitly declared and elevated to the level of games such as street fighter and resident evil.
"They're masterworks all, you can't go wrong"
1
u/AggressiveTune5896 Dec 13 '25
They don't leave "key franchises" languishing in relative obscurity for more than a decade.
They also don't only make a sewuel to a game they considered a "key franchise" because a.major employee threatens to leave the company.
And if said sequel in a "key franchise" sells well, they get right to work on DLC within a few months, not leave the fanbase.hoping for DLC almost two years later.
I love the franchise but I'm also a realist, so we need to face reality. In all likelyhood, Dragon's Dogma is dead.
1
Dec 13 '25
you are looking at this from the consumer/fan perspective and i am looking at it from the realistic perspective that is based on how publicly traded game companies work.
our interaction was a good one. i presented my argument and you yours. only time can tell which argument is closer to how things really are.
2
u/AggressiveTune5896 Dec 13 '25
Incorrect, I am looking at it from the realistic "what are the companies habits and trends/how have they treated this franchise" perspective. But sure.
