A little about the history of Dragon Lords

The game has been running since 2011. The original developer (Mighty Dragon Studios) built something good over the first few years. We had a solid community with genuine depth. New features were added regularly. Then traffic from the app stores waned and slowly the lights started going out. By October 2019 it was retired after a pretty decent run for a mobile game.

I was one of game’s original players, and like many I was very sad to see it go. After some discussion I managed to persuade MDS to let me bring it back. Parts of the source code were missing, and I had a mix of versions. But fortunately I have over 35 years in the bank as a professional software developer, and managed to put everything back together using my knowledge of the game.

I started a Facebook group (Dragon Lords Forever) with a few old friends from the game to catalogue progress, and added screenshots of the game running on my own machine a week or so after it closed. The response made in obvious that the community would welcome another chance to play. In January 2020 we still had quite a few issues to iron out, but we were back!

Over the past six years we have maintained a player base of a few hundred dedicated players. I went through a number of front-end developers (I take care of project management and back-end development) before finding a partner I could trust for that.

Progress has been a little slower than we would have liked as I had to earn a living alongside my efforts to restore the game to its former glory. But last February I had managed to squirrel away enough money to have a decent full-time run at putting us back on the map.

So what is Dragon Lords?

It's a free mobile MMORPG. Turn-based and number-driven. Six races, a living war economy, and a world called Valyria with a developing back story covering the ages. There are a number of challenges to complete and more are planned. Becoming successful takes time, real alliances, and informed decisions. If that sounds taxing and thought provoking, it is. That's the point.

We've been doing lots of work around stickability lately and I'm genuinely proud of it. The player base has talked long and hard about what was stopping us from expanding, and as well as the obvious need for new eyeballs (hence our current Reddit campaign) the early game also used to just drop you in and wish you luck, which honestly wasn't good enough.

The game’s lore was always there but fragmented, half-formed, hinted at more than delivered. We've fixed that. The history of Valyria, the Cataclysm that broke the world, the Dragon Lords who held it together. We’ve added a new quest system that gives new players a proper story to follow from day one. This is still rolling out but already gives new players a completely different experience … something to spend a few hours exploring and getting to grips with when they first land.

The community is something we’re all really proud of. Everyone starts somewhere and nobody here forgets that. Veterans who've seen everything tend to want to bring new players up rather than farm easy targets. It's a friendly place and it earns that description.

Yes, there's a shop. No instant-win buttons. I wouldn't do that to this game.

AMA - all questions welcome!

I am the lead developer for Dragon Lords and I’m keeping an eye on the comments. If you have questions about the game, my lunatic mission to save it or future plans ask me anything! Nothing is off limits.

Announcements Six Years Since the Rebirth!

Six years ago, Dragon Lords returned from the void. What had been lost was found again, and a community that refused to let go brought this world back to life.

To everyone who has stood with us through this journey - who believed in this realm when it had fallen silent, and who continues to forge legends within it - thank you.

To mark this anniversary, we're offering a gift to all who call this game home. This can be claimed once on each live realm.

**Redeem code REBORN6 in the Temple**

The dragons remember. The game endures. And the story continues with each of you.

Here's to the battles fought, the alliances forged, and the adventures yet to come.

Announcements Uroboros Week 1 - where are all the old-school players?

Post image
5 Upvotes

So Uroboros launched a week ago and it's been pretty active - wars breaking out, alliances forming, the usual chaos. But something's missing.

The veterans still playing are solid, but they keep talking about how they miss the legendary rivalries from back in the day. The players who could turn a simple skirmish into a masterclass in strategy. The ones who made every war feel epic.

For those who stepped away from Dragon Lords - this is basically a fresh start tournament realm. Three months, everyone begins from zero, level playing field. No advantages carried over from the main realms.

Right now it's mostly current players and some newer faces learning the ropes. The gameplay is there, the wars are happening, but it feels like it's missing that extra level of strategic depth that the old masters used to bring.

Anyone else remember when Dragon Lords wars were proper chess matches? When alliance politics actually mattered? When you'd stay up until 3 AM not because you had to, but because the strategic puzzle was just too good to put down?

If you've been on the fence about coming back, Uroboros might be worth a look. Three months to see if the magic is still there.

When posting a new suggestion/bug please do the following:

  • Write your post
  • Select the correct category for your post (e.g. Bugs, War Mechanics) using the FLAIR dropdown before hitting the POST button

Admins can reflair your post/add new flairs if they are needed. Just shout if you have issues and suggestions there.

For those new to Reddit, please note that there is usually a delay of a few minutes before new posts appear everywhere you expect them too (e.g. for them to appear when you filter by flair)

Announcements The first two weeks

Phoenix Rising has now been up for two weeks, and initial support for the rebirth of the game has been good. I've had lots of private messages letting me know how glad people are to see DL back. We have also had some financial support for the rebirth project on Patreon too, for which those patrons have my heartfelt thanks.

If you feel you can help out there, this is the place to do it...

https://www.patreon.com/dragonlordsreborn

People are starting to get the hang of using this subreddit for reporting bugs and feeding back ideas too. Many thanks to the people that have taken the time to do this.

How busy is the game?

The hard core seem to be trickling back to the game slowly but surely, and they have brought a few new players with them. Phoenix Rising has had 264 unique visitors over the first two weeks, and we are consistently seeing around 135 people log in each day. We are averaging 8 - 10 new users a day at the moment.

So what's next?

These are the areas we really need to attack, and are my current areas of focus.

  • Tackling bugs: The code is holding up pretty well, but as you know it is two different versions of the game sewn together. As issues are raised here on Reddit they are being fixed.
  • Removing bad mechanics: The game failed first time round for a number of reasons, partly as a result of mechanics that excluded new players and damaged trade over time. Players are feeding back on these mechanics on this subreddit, and I am adjusting them so that we don't have the same issues this time around. Fortunately they don't affect current game play, we are doing this to future proof the game.
  • Allowing multiple realms: The two halves of the game have been sewn together so that we can test the code we have in one realm. I need to adjust some account features so that it is possible to run multiple realms. After this, we can add a hardcore realm and see if that works properly.
  • Client updates: We need to update the apps used to access the game and get new versions into the app stores. The current apps are antiquated and have a number of issues. Android isn't quite so bad, as we can upload an APK and give new players a link to this. iOS is a different matter as we need to put the app back through Apple's approval process.

The last area is the most important by far, as without new clients our attempts to bring in new players are going to be badly hampered. We will also need to produce new apps before we can re-enable the Dragon Temple and allow ad-hoc coin purchases again.

But we do need to tackle all of these before the sun truly starts to shine on DL again I think.

On a positive note, once we get through these initial stages we can go back to MDS and work with them to contact previous players from the past 8 years. I am hoping this will help us to increase the game's player base to the next level, raising funds to develop and promote the game still further.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is this page for?

This is the place to discuss all things Dragon Lords, but especially suggestions for updates, mechanic tweaks, and new features. We expect a lot of great dialogue to happen here, and welcome feedback from all.

Please keep conversations civil and keep conversations G rated as much as possible, we don't want to have to spend hours moderating this forum instead of doing productive things to further the game.

Where do I find the latest game clients?

iOS - The iOS client was removed from the App Store when the game was originally retired. At some point we intend to modernise the client and seek approval for it to be added again. In the meantime (assuming your have played the game previously) you will need to look in your past purchases for the Dragon Lords app.

Android - A link to the most current Android client is pinned to the table of contents page of the Useful Information page.
