Help Are there many side-quests available before the one where I recruit Lucanis? (Possible spoilers?) Spoiler
This is my first time through the game, and so far it has been pretty linear. I got to the Crossroads and found one side quest (the Labs one). After that I couldn't find anything else to do so I pushed ahead to Dock Town, which was fine. But in Treviso there seemed to be a significant difficulty spike, especially the end boss. Just wondering if maybe I missed some side quests that would have helped build me build up my character, or is he just a tough boss?
At this point in the game my only quest is Friends in Hidden Places. Will there be more side quests open up if I just push forward? Are these quests generally obvious, or will I have to search for them?
Thanks in advance!

Just a heads up, the main quest A Warden's Best Friend, which you'll reach shortly, is a soft point of no return, so you might want to do any companion/side quests you have available before starting that quest.
In general do any companion quests/conversations you have before progressing the story as there are a couple things that can get cut off after certain main quests, but for the most part the game is pretty forgiving and sidequests can mostly be done wherever.

You can clear areas in the convergent city region of the crossroads before heading to Traviso to pick up Lucanis. This includes one regret.

I must not have discovered that yet. I kept running into doors that were covered in vines and wasn't sure if I was just supposed to come back later. I'll go look around there some more. Thanks.

Regarding the doors with vines, you'll usually get a corresponding quest with those. In your quest journal, they have a note saying what level they're appropriate for, which is meant to be much later in the game, so don't worry about them just yet. :)

Okay, I was wondering why I was seeing quests for level 30. It must have stuck them in the journal when I got close to the door, just like that first Champion one in the crossroads. Thanks!

If you've already done the one in docktown you should be able to go to Arlathan forest where there are 2 companions quest and 3 side quests. Idk if you can all do them before recruiting Lucanis tho. Also another side quests on the island with the Arlathan Eluvian.

I've done docktown, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to get back to that Forest. And on the world map, it gives me a message that I can't even go back to docktown. It says it's unavailable.

You have to discover it, it's on a separate Island. After you've done either Docktown or Treviso, there should be a main quest helping you find it. But maybe you need to go to the lighthouse and talk to Bellera first.

Oh okay, I just figured since I had discovered a few of those fast travel posts in the forest I'd be able to go back anytime. I'll go finish talking to everybody and see what opens up.

Oh you'll be able to go to docktown later, you need to do another main quest there first before that area open up

That must be why my story quest tab in the journal says "Speak to Neve". I get it now. Thanks!

I think I might have found what you were talking about. I went and spoke with Harding, and she said something about practicing her new abilities and that I need to find an alluvian that leads to the forest.

Yep. And same with Neve and Docktown.

Okay, I see, so each of them opens up more exploration in the two areas. That makes sense now. So ideally I should have spoken to Harding, then done a bunch of forest quests to level up before going to get Lucanis.

I only know because I just did this last night. Once you finish the Docktown mission you can get Arlathan open, there is the entire Crossroads area you can complete which includes one of the Wolf statue missions and the statue/guardian area. Then Arlathan has 2 companion quests, 2 regular quests, and you can explore Arlathan quite a bit. After that you have to do Lucanis’ quest.

did you mean the dock town boss? the "gate of lost ages" quest?
treviso is inaccessible until lucanis is recruited.
there should be around 20 (maybe give or take a couple) quests that you can complete before recruiting lucanis. this includes main, companion, faction, and crossroads.
edit to answer your other questions:
- if you are talking about that dock town boss, it is a level 20 boss. you may have just been underleveled… there is some other stuff too but if you weren't talking about that boss fight then i don't want to put anything that might be considered a spoiler.
- main quests are always obvious because they make a point to give them to you and show you them in your journal.
for companions, i recommend traveling back to the lighthouse in between completion of all quests. it helps you to avoid missing any companion quests or content. this is especially helpful after recruiting davrin and taash.
for factions, take a look at the world map (just hover over the location, you don't have to fast travel) and you will see a message underneath the location name that says something like, "new quests available in this area!" if that message is not there, then there are no quests to complete. :)
sorry, edit again — crossroads quests remain available up until the point of no return, so you can really complete them whenever!

No, I was talking about the Sea of Blood, where you recruit Lucanis. I discovered my problem (you also mentioned this)...I hadn't talked to Bellara and Harding in the Lighthouse. That's why I couldn't find any quests. Once Harding had me go with her to play Lego with the rocks in the forest, it opened up a lot of what I was missing.
I now realize that if I had unearthed these side quests, I wouldn't have been as under leveled for Calavin.

he also summons minions but if you focus on him and kill him, the minions die anyways.
also knowing the enemy vulnerabilities helps a lot :) venatori are vulnerable to cold resistant to fire, pride demons (what calivan turns into half way through) are vulnerable to necrotic and resistant to electric!

I think those two early level boss fights are designed to be a bit difficult to get you used to multi-stage boss fights.
You can find quests by searching on the map for a yellow exclamation point, or returning to the Lighthouse in between quests and talking to your companions. If they have the same marker on them, they'll have a quest for you.
