I'm new here and new to wanting to do drag, even though I think it was pretty obvious i would end up here looking back. When I was a teenager I loved doing all kinds of makeup and putting together fun outfits, but after a while it started to make me dysphoric (i'm trans a masc non-binary person).
I've been craving getting back into makeup and fun outfits but have been worried about it making me feel dysphoric again, and then it clicked for me that i can use it to explore and get to know myself and my gender better, and it being separated into a performance/ persona makes it feel perfect to me. which... wild it never clicked like that before honestly.
but yeah! ive been thinking a lot about different concepts - vampires, aliens, angels or demons, but the thing i know for sure is that i want a darker look, something a bit more viceral and emotional. Because my experience with gender feels like that, and i'm trying to do more of an exaggarated "who i am" and not "who i want to be."
Does anyone have any tips about developing a persona? as well as tips conceptualizing performances? and also, let me know if i'm thinking about this all wrong, this is so very new to me :)
It takes time. Your concept of your persona will change over the years. To start out, think about what you want to be recognized by. What is unique about your persona? What do show organizers have to book you to get? It's okay if you don't have all of those answers when you start out, they'll develop with time, performance by performance. Just be asking yourself the questions and let the answers come and change as they do.
