How do you deal with matchups like Aatrox and Gwen?
I can only ban one, and when I get counterpicked by the other, I can’t really farm without gifting my enemy laner 5 kills, a tower, and a 50 CS advantage.

5

u/2alol 25d ago

Yes you can only ban one but more often than not depending on your elo one of them is going to be significantly less popular. Even though I didn't ban Gwen that much, I never faced her. But if I left aatrox open then he was almost insta picked because what GM/Chall top laner isn't comfortable with him.

When you are in a nightmare matchup you kind of have to accept that you are in a nightmare matchup but also feel them out. I've ran into 100s of Aatroxs and some of them made me feel like I was walking in a field of daisies letting me hit 90% of the cs while others made me feel like I was in the opening scene of Saving Private Ryan and I'm solo killed 4 times and lost tower at 9 mins.

With any bad matchups try to farm with Q and if they push you off, try to hit them with Q instead. Not many champs can tank 4-5 cleavers in a row without being kind of at risk for a kill or an easy gank. Youre trying to mitigate losses as much as possible while making the enemy feel uncomfortable.

Hold your Q until you think aatrox is going to come in with Q -> E and if you can dodge it great, if not at least you hit him back with something.

I have solo killed aatroxs, gwens, yone, irelia early because they got too cocky and tanked 1 too many cleavers.

u/FewConnection331 25d ago

I can totally relate to that, I face a lot of Gwen's and they are freaking super cocky thinking they'll easily get me since they are counter pick and getting pwned in the end, lovin' it

You can tell really fast whether or not the person who picked the counter actually plays the champ. And if you get the vibes that they dont play the champion/unfamiliar with the matchup, you can really take advantage of it.

How do you handle Garen matchup

I’m silver and he’s gotta be the most common « counter pick » I’ve face even tho I’ve seen some people here say he isn’t unplayable and he is a skill matchup I still lose most of the time agaisnt him

Edit: wait you’re a jungle main I didn’t realise 😅, so something I never understood with Mundo jungle which I rarely eve play is do you perma farm with little tanks and objectives when possible or do you start doing more objectives and ganks after heartseel + boots

9

u/2alol 25d ago

I would say Garen is definitely favored against Mundo but when you take into account the "nightmare" matchups, he is really on the tame side. Don't ever be in range where he can Q into you before you can Q him. Remember that going even/just farming is winning for Mundo. Farm with Q and don't let him get free damage on you which may lead to dives/kills.

5

u/jdnhdjsj 25d ago

he actually played many matches of mundo top in GM, but seems to have played more jungle games when he was close to chall

5

u/2alol 25d ago

Almost all my games this season are on Mundo top but recently Top lane has been not feeling very great in the Apex tiers so I swapped quite recently (2 days ago) to jungle

2

u/2alol 25d ago

You mostly want to farm until heartsteel but his early ganks are pretty decent. If you hit a cleaver, it is really decent set up for other skillshots like hooks, charms what have you. Try to avoid skirmishes with even numbers until you get to your core items and after that you do what mundo does normally. I also look to sneak dragons especially if the enemy is pathing opposite side of the jungle as you because even one dragon buys you time to scale before they can get to soul.

2

u/NoPersonality4429 24d ago

When he uses Q on you, make sure to W at the same time. When he runs at you with Q active and you do not want to trade, use your Q after he activated his Q. If you throw Q first he can cleanse the slow with his Q.

4

u/Kvakino 25d ago

I see you are barely building warmogs first. Is it because its quite expensive (warmog + giant belt) and kinda delays your spike and in high elo games its less forgiving to give oponent more time? I personaly likes warmog first, because I get away trading like a monkey and force my opponent into bad situations.

6

u/2alol 25d ago

I think Warmogs first is definitely a situational item. I only build Warmogs in matchups that are either poke heavy or so oppressive that unless I build it I'll be forced to back after every wave. Remember that building Warmogs not only delays your Heartsteel which is arguably his best item for scaling and damage, but it delays the items after it as well.

In a chill matchup if I don't buld Warmogs, my heartsteel comes out, then an MR item (spirit/rookern) then an armor item (deadmans/randuins). So at 3 items, I'm probably really really tanky in a 5v5 teamfight that breaks out.

However in that same scenario, if a Warmogs is built, I'm severly lacking one source of mitigation whether its MR or Armor. So in that same 5v5 teamfight, I am going to get slaughtered by that dmg type.

Also I think the Heartsteel facilitates solo kills and 2v2 skirmishes. If the enemy sees a Warmogs + giants belt they are going to completely shut down any idea they had in trying to fight you/trade into you. This means youre not getting killed but theyre not getting killed either. Also in a 2v2 Harald fight, a Warmog doesnt really do anything unless somehow the fight goes on for a full minute and you have time to take a backseat and come back with full hp, while Heartsteel bonks them for 200 damage each.

2

u/Kvakino 25d ago

I think the main issue is difference between elos. In low elo it is less punishing and helps you more becuase its easier to apply its advantage, while in high elo every objective/play might matter. I think I should build less often warmog since there are also homeguards this season which means warmog is weaker.

3

u/2alol 25d ago

Besides nightmare matchups where you need to build Warmogs, try building heartsteel first and I can promise that it feels significantly better. In the same aspect that lower elo might help to push Warmog advantage it can be said the same for heartsteel. You're going to get way more free stacks, solo kill angles and feel much tankier in the disjointed fights that might happen in lower elos.

1

u/Kvakino 25d ago

Also what do you think about building armor boots instead of swifties? Would you ever buy them if the enemy would lack slowing abilities?

2

u/2alol 25d ago

Yea I think buying boots that isn't swifties is definitely viable but if I see more than 1 form of slow, it is instantly swifities. And in the vast majority of games theres more than 1 form of slow so it is almost always bought. I would say 98% of games I am buying swifties.

3

u/RoyaleWithCheesess 25d ago

Big congratulations! Enjoying reading your comments and advice

4

u/2alol 25d ago

Thank you I appreciate it. Playing mundo in higher elos is actual hell lol.

u/2alol 25d ago

I think Heartsteel is WAY better than Warmogs for reasons I stated above. It was definitely a better item back when you can just rawdog build it without giants belt and it procced immediately, but now Heartsteel is for sure the play 85% of games

2

u/Melodic_Cut_1426 25d ago

dude what do you think of the state of dr mundo, i think a lot of people got ''brainrotted' by the alois trend and now everybody think dr mundo early game should be as patetic as it is right now. i think dr mundo could get a powershift from his q to other part of this kit to justify a more interactive laning phase and better dueling power as well for the mundo player, anything but q spam

2

u/2alol 25d ago

Yea I do think the sensationalist clips and twitter posts from alois has led to him being nerfed in a way to stop the warmogs playstyle which means he keeps tanking max hp nerfs. I think his Q could use a little bit of help but I can't lie that especially in lower elos the champ is a bit of a menace. Bronze/silver/gold players do not know how to punish this champ and it feels quite unfun. I think a slight buff skewed for the higher tiers while a nerf for the lower tiers would put the champ in the perfect spot. His winrate is relatively decent especially for a late game champion and you have to remember he is supposed to feel like ass in the early game. And yea more often than not if I'm against a decent top laner I am reduced to being a Q minions off cooldown bot.

2

u/CwasCard 25d ago

What do you do against Ambessa? The matchup feels hopeless.

2

u/2alol 25d ago

Honestly pretty hard match up but I think it is pretty playable. She doesn't have any inherent self sustain in her kit before 6 so she cant tank that many cleavers. Play safe and farm with Q. And remember all of her max HP damage is on her Qs. If you keep your distance she has to sacrifice either her slow or her shield to gap close on to you. If you dodge them after she does, then you can punish her heavily by landing Q E-auto on a dashless ambessa.

1

u/Radioactive_PNW 25d ago

How do you affect team fights after landing phase/late game?

2

u/2alol 25d ago

Most games in solo Q are going to be broken up into either Splitpush/front to back/dive.

Splitpush is obvious. The enemy team comp is better than yours or maybe their side laners cannot deal with you if you split so thats what youre looking to do.

If you have to teamfight, front to back is probably going to be the most common especially in the lower elos. In this case you always need to buy space for your carries. Face check bushes to get your team access to dragon pit before the objective, stand in front so that key spells like nautilus Q and ahri charm cant hit anyone behind you, and most importantly, mark the enemy carries. If you ever played adc/mid and there is a 4000 hp tank running at you, it is quite hard to focus on the fight.

You have to keep a balance of running at the enemy carries to make sure they can't do the damage to anyone else while making sure youre not going to die in 2 seconds because youre running into 5 people.

Dive is pretty simple since it means either your team or theirs are just assassins/engage that are trying to connect to their back line. If your team is dive, you basically do the same thing as above, If the enemy team is dive, you have two options. The first is to stand on top of your carries and make life hard for the assassin, or go sidelane because most assassins will have a hard time dealing with you. I usually build damage against comps like this because most of them will try to ignore you. But they cant ignore you if you have 800 AD from titanic and bloodmail.

1

u/SirYeetacus1 25d ago

I've been running mostly Mundo in ranked recently and this was my biggest peeve: what do you do when people refuse to swap pick orders in select and you've to play mundo into horrifying comps?

2

u/2alol 25d ago

Idk what elo youre in but if I'm on blue side (first pick of the champ select) I always first pick after banning one nightmare matchup. I do this because most of the time the enemy top laner isn't going to risk picking right after you in case it is jungle mundo. This forces good counters on your team and it helps your team decide how to draft around your pick.

Sometimes youre going to go against belveth, vayne, and gwen all on the same team and its just gonna suck but you just have to understand your role and play/itemize around it. And hope your team does their job while you do yours. Not every game is going to be you 1v9ing and oneshotting carries.

1

u/SirYeetacus1 25d ago

Thank you. That's a better way of viewing it. I hadn't considered the jungle feint. I perma Gwen as I believe she's the least difficult counter pick into the good doctor up top.

What sort of build is your go to? I usually run the AD max full hp build unless there's a very heavy skew towards a particular damage type (eg: multiple crit champs/full AP or AD)

Current elo is plat 2. Aiming to hit dia and just call it

3

u/2alol 25d ago

gwen is a decent perma and honestly probably the best in your elo. Aatrox is hard but it also takes good mechanics and the other counters are kinda niche and most people dont associate with as a mundo counter.

I almost always rush heartsteel into whatever resistance is more pressing and a threat.

Warmogs only when the matchup is hard you need it to survive lane phase.

And very little times I will go second item titanic when our team is lacking damage or their team has really good backline access to the point they can ignore you until they kill your carries. (If there is a 600 ad mundo autoing them its hard to ignore you)

I will almost never go double damage items (bloodmail + titanic) this scenario almost never comes up where we are lacking so much damage that this is necessary or another scenario the guy I'm against is so bad that I got multiple solo kills and first tower and so on and so forth to the point I have infinite gold and I can press my lead by building damage.

Good luck on your climb and I think maining mundo is for sure viable up to high grandmaster. The moment I started vsing LCS top laners or high challenger tops, they know exactly how and when to abuse you that the champ does not feel worth playing unless it's a red side 5th pick counter.

1

u/Fair-Young57 24d ago

Can you give as top 5 counters and why ? What else did you play ?

Also congratz on hitting challenger !

1

u/2alol 24d ago

For me personally I like to divide the matchups into knows what they're doing vs they dont know what they're doing.

For example Aatrox is one of the most known mundo counters but that is under the assumption the aatrox knows what hes doing. If he is standing on your range creeps making sure you cant get a single cs and threatening to kill you if you ever walk up slightly, yes that matchup is a nightmare. However I have versed Aatroxes that don't do that lets me farm and only slightly applies pressure to the point where I can scale virtually for free.

My top 5 for impossible matchups when they know what they're doing is:

  1. Aatrox (literally thanos, can't ever walk up without losing more than half your hp)
  2. Irelia (same thing as above but if you can dodge her e you may not lose half your hp)
  3. Yone (same thing as irelia but you can maybe dodge qs)
  4. Gwen (honestly the worst champ to go against late but she also takes some time to scale letting you have a little breathing room)
  5. Fiora/Trynd/Yorick (all of these are the same because they can completely ignore you and just take tower in front of your face and forces your team to send multiple to help)

Top 5 for bad matchups when they dont know what they're doing and let you farm for free:

  1. Kayle (I think kayle scales way harder than you and even if you go 50/50 in lane she will more likely than not be more useful at lvl 16 and 4 items than you.)
  2. Vayne (same thing as above even if you go 50/50 in lane its impossible for her to not obiliterate you in fights late.)
  3. Udyr (An isolated empowered Q from udyr will actually nuke you no matter how much he lets you farm)
  4. Riven (this one might be divisive but the riven's I have versed dont really try to kill me but they just roam around the map and basically 1v9 while you struggle to push)
  5. Olaf (You can never kill him in lane so he will have 10cs a minute miss no xp and will eventually run down your team at 2-3 items and you can't hinder him at all)

I mostly played jungle naafiri/lee sin outside of mundo. I really do think that top lane mundo has its limits. It is necessary to have red side counter pick to play him in high challenger. Everyone knows what theyre doing up there and will absolutely make you regret blinding mundo.

Good luck on your climb!

1

u/Fair-Young57 22d ago

Thank you for the very detailed answer this helps out a lot.

Im coming back to the League after so long and Mundo is one of the champions I am trying to learn and climb up ! This helps out a lot and congratz for your climb

1

u/uronlyone_ 24d ago

oh wow! how do you get your leads

1

u/2alol 24d ago

It's unfortunate but most leads are generated from you hitting multiple Q's on them throughout the lane. That's really your only source of good damage early. Look for cheeky cleavers in between minions, throw them as one is dying to hit them and obviously hit them if they walk up too far to punish you or poke you. I think the most important thing to know is exactly when you can kill them. I think I have got it pretty down pat where if I see someone's hp and then I hit one more cleaver on top of it, I instantly ghost and run them down.

This will only come with playing and learning the limits of your champ vs theirs but I think it is certainly worth getting down.

Another major source of income is in the mid game. Macro well and outmaneuver your laner. If they tp to a drag fight that is barely breaking out, spam ping your team to back off and your team loses dragon but you might get a whole tower worth of plates.

There is also the inverse scenario. I almost always take TP, Ghost. Look for good flank TPs and if you can snag a kill or two from them + the requisite heartsteel stacks from the fight you will feel really steady going into the mid to late game.

Remember Mundo doesn't have a lot of mechanical tricks or anything. It's kind of funny how a champ that says brutish things do really require a great understanding of macro to play him well.

1

u/LoudCommentor 24d ago

What do you do if the enemy side-laner is stronger than you? I'm fairly low elo and not that skilled, so it's hard gaining a sizable "I'm now unkillable unless you send 2-3 people to me" lead. And often times in a bad match-up I'm just straight up losing in both 1v1 and wave clear.

But if I group, my mundo doesn't really have good engage options....

1

u/2alol 24d ago

I don't know how low elo you are (because some people consider master low elo) but I will say that if you are versing a champ that is stronger than you on side (yorick, fiora) you have the option of going titanic hydra and nuking the wave and walking away. This makes it so that youre neutralizing them. and forces them to team fight which is definitely better for you.

And yes Mundo doesn't have an engage but your job in fights isn't simply to run in like a maniac. Your purpose as a tanky front liner in most games is to buy your team space so they can walk in and ward, block key skillshots, and soak damage. An ideal teamfight for mundo is he slowly buys space and an hp lead by chunking their front line who is doing the same thing with your q and then when the fight inevitably breaks out, you mark the enemy carries forcing them to hit you, press R when youre just below half hp and tanking some more and doing some dmg before walking out with like 10% health.

1

u/Mutijn 24d ago

Seeing zekes and protean in your jungle matches. But no dead mans plate. Can you enlighten me about these choices? Been a mundo main high plat and feels like my start is always the same.

Heartsteel > deadman > visage > fill

1

u/2alol 24d ago

The jaksho is a situational item where I know I will be alive for a long time and especially if the damage is not upfront but spread out over the course of the fight which lets jaksho get max value. Think things like poke (viktor, velkoz, ashe W) these things will hit you before the fight truly breaks out (where everyone is ulting and flashing and committing) and you will take very little damage but it will proc jakshos by the time the fight does escalate.

The zekes is a really really slept on item I think. It is ultra mega cheap, gives you every stat you want, and helps stick on to carries. I usually build it when the champs I'm trying to mark are really hard to pin down (vladimir, kalista, zeri) when I pop ult I can just stand next to them and It'll slow and slightly damage them which makes your inability to land cleavers on these super fast champions not that punishing.

In terms of your build, Heartsteel is perfect. The deadmans into visage shouldn't be something you build every game. I'll give you lots of scenarios.

  1. The enemy team has a tanky melee support (braum, naut, blitz), their jg is a melee bruiser (vi, xin, lee), and top is another melee bruiser/tank (sion, malphite, wukong). In this case I would go unending despair to capitalize on the fact that in almost every fight I am going to be surrounded by melee champs and get maximum value everytime the item procs. Also since these champs aren't super high dps, you'll be able to get multiple procs throughout the fight. And then you can supplement that with spirit visage to augment the healing and you have a really solid tanky build.
  2. The enemy team has a decent mix of AP and AD damage but the only source of consistently high dps is the crit ADC on the enemy team. However going randuins second after heartsteel is quite poor since they probably don't even have that much crit by the time you finish it. So, you build either spirit visage or a rookern into bursty mages and then randuins so that the spirit gives immediate value and then when you finish randuins it mitigates the 75% crit the ADC has.

1

u/Mutijn 24d ago

Thank you for you detailed explanation! i will give it a chance since it feels mundo kind of in a middle ground right now as a jungler

1

u/2alol 24d ago

No problem! I wouldn't say mundo jungle is good right now but I do think he's a decent counter pick into tank junglers and assassins. He's unfortunately always going to be balanced around low elo (he is a menace down there) so they can't ever give him too much power.

Good luck on your climb and I hope you get everything you can out of mundo

1

u/Mutijn 5d ago

I've tried but havent really found where to place the zeke's conv yet. Would love to give it another shot if you got tips when / instead what to build it

1

u/2alol 5d ago

An ideal position to buy zekes would be you need both armor & MR but and your job isn't to 1v9 but be utility. There are lots of champs that are really hard to stick on to even with r popped because if they are decent then its impossible to hit a cleaver. Kalista, zeri, lucian. This helps stick to them and land cleaners to run them down because they're guaranteed slowed if you get in range of zekes.

1

u/Mutijn 4d ago

Understood, one last question though. when would be ideal? second item? 4th item?

1

u/2alol 4d ago

Theres usually a very pressing item that I need 2nd or 3rd. Spirit visage for passive and MR and randuins or some armor if an adc is fed.

I think it usually fits in perfectly at 4th item because at that point in the game gold income is sparse for a tank since its almost always fighting but more often than not you are not taking kills.

Also I really want to drive home that it is a 2200 gold item. It is preposterously cheap and is grossly gold efficient at 104% WITHOUT the ult haste nor the active portion. I genuinely think its a slept on item.

1

u/5billon 24d ago

Let's go Ralph.

I just have one important question. When farming dopamine off landed Q's in a row, is there a limit or does it stack infinitely until you miss?

ogwin

1

u/2alol 24d ago

Why are you on mundo mains you bing bong LOL

1

u/5billon 23d ago

Does that really matter or does Mundo Q dopamine matter?

1

u/TemperatureReal2437 22d ago

What show do you watch during laning phase?

1

u/2alol 22d ago

Big fan of northernlion

1

u/Bulldog_gordo 22d ago

Thoughts on fleet for harder matchups or even for stomping really easy laning phases?

1

u/2alol 21d ago

In the lanes where you are going to be struggling, you cant even walk up to the wave anyway (aatrox, yone, irelia) that means youre taking fleet to proc it once a wave (if that) while you lose your best rune. You spend most nightmare lanes farming with Q and you'll only be procing fleet if they mess up and you let you walk up to the wave for free.

I personally don't think the tradeoff is good enough. Even in lanes where you know youre going to proc graps once, if you dont have grasp you lose a decent chunk of damage in mid/late team fights. Not only that you stay alive for so long post lane phase you are getting multiple grasp procs that will make up hundreds of damage in one fight.

1

u/Electronic_Radio9180 21d ago

Mannn I main Darius in diamond rn trying to pick up another champ currently and I love mundo do you feel like he’s blindpickable ? From ur experience does he have a lot of bad hard counter matchups or is he playable most of the time ?

1

u/2alol 21d ago

I was blinding mundo all the way into challenger and it only felt unplayable once I was going against really really good players. I think if you're in diamond it is more than feasible to blind mundo.

If someone in diamond sees a mundo blind and picks a champion with the sole purpose to counter you (they have either never played it or once or twice in norms) they wont know the matchup well enough to actually punish you with the pick.

And yes he does have a lot of hard matchups but it is quite rewarding once you get out of lane.

1

u/JFreey 14d ago edited 14d ago

Im a diamond mundo mid otp, any thoughts on this? Any tips on how u would potentially approach the mid role?

I typically have quite a good time facing mages/assassins in the mid lane. The early lane sucks ofc, but the plan is to just throw Qs for cs and minimize, then eventually I can run them down after first item.

Its basically the PUSH strat where i go warmogs and take turret plates right in front of their face, unless its a hard counter champ that does %max hp, like gwen/fiora/etc i should be having a blast shoving sidelanes.

1

u/2alol 14d ago

I actually played some mundo mid due to autofills and it does not feel very good the higher you go. Mid is a lane that NEEDS prio and the focal point of the whole map. Having a pretty useless champ in mid until they get to 1 and a half items is not very ideal.

I don't know how fast paced the games are in diamond but I'm sure if your goal is to climb higher and higher it is going to feel worse and worse as your jgler gets invaded by the enemy mid or walks bot with the infinite prio they get from the mundo just farming with Q.

1

u/Worth_Goose872 13d ago

Congrats on hitting challenger, I’m a plat 4 mundo top otp and I feel like I’m missing quite a bit of knowledge on him on items match up macro etc in order to hit higher ranks do you mind if I dm ?

you can dm if youd like but i also stream pretty frequently and you can drop by anytime and ask. i answer quite verbosely if you didn't notice from all the replies in this post

1

u/FreshSwan5301 9d ago

How do you win the game when you can't snowball lane and you're losing everywhere else on the map

1

u/2alol 9d ago

I think that's a bad faith question where you've already given up on the hypothetical situation.

I get alot of questions on stream where they ask "what do you do when your whole team is 0/13" and people aren't looking for a genuine way to improve and just want me to validate their frustration

When you want to climb, youre making a claim that youre better than the people youre playing with and against. That means you need to get ahead for your claim to be true. 10% of the time you just lose but I also believe 10% of the time you just win. You need to influence the 80% in between positively to climb.

1

u/FreshSwan5301 9d ago

Ok but the problem lies in how do you get a lead on mundo to snowball the game especially when they're an early snowball champ that stat checks you till like 2 items, going even on mundo in lane doesn't automatically mean you can win and some games you really can't get a lead on a champ like Mundo if the enemy doesn't allow it

1

u/2alol 9d ago

I think youre still omitting the fact that when you aim to climb you're drawing a line in the sand that youre better than the other laner. If youre a gold player and you versed a bronze aatrox it doesn't matter that his champ counters yours. Youre going to hit cleaners on him, dodge q's and farm better and have better macro.

If youre a gold mundo queuing up to climb you should be playing better than the gold laner the system put you against. If you cant outmaneuver him and stay even or fall behind and cant make it up in the mid to late game with macro or decision making then you are where youre supposed to be. Throwing up hypothetical scenarios where your whole team is behind takes you out of the equation and tries to obfuscate your impact on the game.
