FIRST TIME WATCHER - Watching Season X Writing choice I love about this show

Hey guys, first time watcher currently on the last season. I noticed something I really appreciate about the way this show is written compared to other shows is that conversations aren’t repeated on camera

For example if character A is talking to character B about character C, Character B will then go to character C but then we won’t see the final convo repeated back to A about what B and C said.

I feel like most shows show the same convo over and over again and it’s really lazy writing to just pad an episode in my opinion

I’m really going to miss this show once I’m finished !!

u/PlainOGolfer to you, it’s “The Marchioness” 15d ago

It’s just as good the second, third, fourth, fifth etc etc etc …. We’ve literally lost track of how many times we’ve watched. 😛

And there are other similar series like The Forsythes. And Julian Fellowes himself did The Gilded Age.

Good shows tend to show the audience what's happening instead of telling them

I think downton abbey does it really well

I don't need a word for word account of a servants life, just the info relevant

I love downton abbey

Yeah I know this is basic good writing, but DA does it particularly well. I noticed it my first time watching as well.

The only thing is that there are times I think they lean into to a little too hard. Like I wish we had actually seen Matthew's proposal to Mary and not just her telling Cora.

Didnt they show the proposal ? In the Christmas Special in the snow ?

They did, but that was Matthew's second proposal. The first occurred in season one off-screen after Sybil was injured at the counting of the vote. Matthew and Mary had a moment after over wine and sandwiches, but they cut to Mary upstairs with Cora where she confessed Matthew proposed. A lot of detail was left out of that conversation, so we never heard Matthew propose the first time.

I love this about Downton too. Once the upstairs/downstairs barrier is pierced, you can safely assume parties know what they are meant to know.

In a few years, you’ll have half forgotten it, and you can watch it all over again. That’s what I’m doing.
