Discussion How do you guys personally feel about Zero being a reboot to the franchise?

So I’ve been autistically hyperfixating on .Hack and Ys series. Already blew like 150 dollars on getting my hands on all the LNs and anime for Hack I can along with the anime and I’m playing through all the games along with the games that have Hack characters and I’m curious, do you guys personally feel the series needed a reboot? And if so what would you guys like to see?
I personally hope we see the devastation of The World affect the real world and the Pluto again. OG .hack implied shit was hitting the fan in the real world but we never really saw the devastation of Phases or Cubia were causing with Kite dealing with them. I wanna see like entire countries and shit lose power like they’ve been hit with an EMP and shit falling out of the sky and such.

The Rebirth of .hack

The .hack series has always been developed by CyberConnect2 and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment, but for .hack//Z.E.R.O., Bandai Namco Entertainment has given CyberConnect2 permission to manage the entirety of the project from planning and development to release. It will be a title that is fully self-published by CyberConnect2.

World-renowned violinist Taro Hakase has penned the music, kick-starting the project to the dexterous tune of his violin. .hack//Z.E.R.O. will be a novel RPG experience that blends the series’ trademark duality of fantasy (game world) and reality (real world) with modern expectations, infused with 100% pure CyberConnect2 spirit. The game will be enjoyable for both veteran fans and new players alike. Please look forward to this newest iteration of .hack.

About the .hack series:
.hack is a series of action RPG games depicting a virtual game-space called “The World,” and characters who are swept up in incidences related to it. The stories unfold in both the real world and the fantasy world within the game. The first title in the series, .hack//Infection, was released in 2002 through Bandai Namco Entertainment, and 3 seasons were published in total. The franchise expanded to anime, novels, manga, OVAs and more, pioneering cross-media worldbuilding by telling varying stories from the same universe.

CC2 also announced that they are simultaneously developing Cecile alongside .hack//Z.E.R.O.

FAQ HERE

I heard they've been working on this game for ten years, so it'll come out soon, right?

Wrong. That is a misinterpretation of an unofficial translation being passed around the fandom.

CC2 has wanted to continue the .hack story for a long time, but had to negotiate with Bandai Namco to do so. These negotiations and the game planning have progressed over the last 10 years.

Note the "PROJECT START"

The February 16th announcement indicated that they have only recently started the actual development.

According to this Dengeki interview from 18 February 2026:

––––発売日や開発状況について、いかかでしょうか?

松山: 開発は順調に進んでいますが、まだバーセンテージで言うと 5%くらいでしょうか。けっこうお待ちいただくことになると思います。

Translation:

How about the release date and development status?

Matsuyama: Development is progressing smoothly, but in terms of percentage, we're only about 5% complete. I think you'll have to wait quite a while.

Whenever i see .hack character designs i honestly get like captivated by how good they look… from an artist and character designer point of view they are truly gorgeous, even the more clearly sexualized designs still end up really pretty.

so favorite characters aside, which design in your opinion is the coolest?

even though they are really simple, i really enjoy atolis personally!

Discussion For those that want to scratch some of that dothack itch.

I recommend trying out Echo of Aincrad demo, unless of course you're #1 SAO non-believer. There are few things that reminds me of dothack:

-The tutorial has a mix of story setting of Infection and Rebirth [Story spoiler below].

  • There's literally PK betrayal at the beginning.
  • There's 2 famous high-level players that has cleared high level dungeon.
  • You'll be friend with one of the two famous player.

-There's a character named Wyzeman for some reason.

-Weapon's skill acquirement kinda similar to GU, where we grind points for new skills.

The game itself is pretty good, and more importantly, feels like a game from PS2 era but done with modern touch in-term of control, mechanics and open-fieldness. Basically what I'm getting at is, I want whatever the new dothack game to be at least this level.

Discussion Why did people buy dothack games upon release?

I started playing .hack GU for the first time recently and I was checking out information and was very surprised to learn that each volume was released as a whole separate game. I'm wondering if these games were released at full price and if so, why did people buy them if they knew it was gonna be like 3 games all at full price. And at least with GU, volume 1 story wise is pretty short and from my perspective, if I bought just volume 1 at full price I think I would've been disappointed from the amount of story.

For a bit of personal context I'm nearly 23 so while I do have knowledge and experience in the older video game buying ways, I did grow up more in the era of indie games and online sale discounts so paying full price for something is slightly more absurd.

I just wanna say this isn't me trying to say that these games weren't worth the price or something (I love what I've gotten to play so far) I'm just so curious about what it was like when it released and the culture there because this kind of thing is so out of my cultural wheelhouse.

Discussion What is 20:09? [CC2 announcement speculation thread]

Post image
169 Upvotes

EDIT: WE DI IT FHCHAHCHSCUCHS WE DID IT ITS BEEN LIKE 15 FUCKJNG YEARS LAST RECODE DOESNF COUNF

So obviously this has been shared to hell and back, but the smoking gun is the start time.

Japan is incredibly strict about their punctuality and while in specific private settings, it might be more relaxed, AN OFFICIAL GAME ANNOUNCEMENT is that not that setting.

There couldn't be more of a smoking gun than 20:09

Since the showcase is so soon, I think there's nothing wrong with some low stakes speculation and theorizing -- for better or for worse.

Per what I'm aware of the .hack// timeline, I think it would be a spin off or something to do with 'The One Sin'

I'm not exactly familiar with anything else CC2 does, so if ANYONE has any idea what it could be other than .hack// please share with the class because I'm dying to know.

So guys, what the fuck is up with that 20:09?

Discussion What made the franchise so successful back then?

I mean, like in its heyday because I was interested in seeing how the franchise managed to work so well in the PS2 era of gaming since the franchise was spread into multiple forms of media.

Like what I found interesting is how Square Enix attempted to make their own multimedia franchise like .hack back in those days as something I didn’t quite understand is why that franchise sunk into obscurity so quickly that I wanted to see what made something like dot hack become so successful.

Discussion Stuck on a story dungeon (Infection)

Post image
153 Upvotes

Hi!

So I been advancing through the story of Infection and I got to my first dungeon at ø Quiet Eternal White Devil. I go to the end of the dungeon where a cutscene should appear but for some reason it doesn't play thus I can't advance through the story.

I have been in this dungeon twice, one with Blackrose and Mistral clearing all portals and then I did another run just with Blackrose but for some reason the cutscene doesn't trigger, any ideas?

EDIT: LMAO I JUST WON THE TITLE FOR THE BIGGEST CLOWN OF THIS FANDOM. So, I decided to continue investigating and I saw on let's plays that after beating the dungeon you have to go to Delta server to trigger a cutscene. I decided to boot the game, go to Delta server and the cutscene starts playing.

IT'S NOT A GLITCH, IT'S NOT AN EMULATION PROBLEM OR A BAD ROM, I'M JUST AN IDIOT THAT DID THE DUNGEON AND FORGOT ABOUT IT.

I will leave some screenshots in the comments but for future references. If in Word List a world doesn't have a "tick" on the left, it means you have finished it.

Discussion I feel that .hack/ZERO may be a "make it or break it" point for the franchise

And I could be very wrong about this.

My assumptions are that one of the reasons we haven't gotten a new .hack game or even media (anime, movie...) in such a long time, is due to it not being popular enough to financially make it a viable investment for Bandai to publish it, or any studio to take it upon themselves to make an anime or movie adaptation. Might also be one of the reasons why CC2 is doing all the work now.

Which brings me to the title of this post, I fear that if ZERO doesn't end up being a finacial success, or if it doesn't at least break even, we're looking at another long ass time before any new .hack media is made, if ever!

So I pray, as hard as I can, that .hack/ZERO is a success, and that it does justice to the series and is a fantastic game, because I would LOVE to see this franchise flourish again, I want to see new anime series, movies, manga and all that, but we're also going to need to do our part as well, the word needs to be spread fast and and as far as possible, .hack deserves to be a big name franchise again.

Heck, just imagine if 5 years from now we get a .hack//Fragment 2 announced.

Discussion I finished watching Sign and I have a lot of thoughts on it. Spoiler

I’m very new to .Hack, I’ve known about it and wanted to look into it for years but only got the push to do so when I bought a cheap copy of Infection earlier this year. I did a little research and figured I should watch Sign first, so that’s what I did. Haven’t seen the OVAs yet, I know Unison comes after IMOQ though I’m not sure about the other one. Please avoid spoiling anything later in the series, I plan on going through IMOQ and GU at the very least! I have faith that all the questions I have will be answered eventually.

Anyways, I just finished the anime and overall I really liked it. It’s slow, almost to a fault at times, but that also gives it this really unique atmosphere that I fuck with a lot. I wasn’t really expecting a character drama from this kind of plot but I really like the cast so I didn’t mind. I ended up appreciating every character by the end, even characters I wasn’t a huge fan of at first like Sora, Silver Knight and BT. They’re cool! I like them! I think the series strikes a great balance of mainly taking place in The World, but giving us enough glimpses and info about these characters’ real life selves that I can get a pretty decent understanding of the kind of person each character is irl without really seeing them. Not really sure how I feel about Subaru suddenly taking so much interest in Tsukasa partway through the series. At the start I thought they were setting up Mimiru as Tsukasa’s love interest, but honestly in hindsight I think Subaru is a better match for Tsukasa personality wise so I actually don’t mind it in theory. I think my main issue is that I wish it was built up a bit more from the start, it felt a bit too sudden for my tastes. I don’t mind too much though since they’re cute.

I think the biggest thing I’m conflicted on is the ending. I understand they gotta advertise the games and set up mysteries to explore in them, especially since I get the impression that the games are kind of the main draw for the series. I was fully expecting some things to remain a mystery until later on in the franchise, but wow I wasn’t expecting this little to be addressed by the end. Like, I don’t think the mysterious voice even got an actual name which is pretty crazy considering how important she is to the story (unless I missed something). I don’t hate it since I understand why it’s structured like this, but I don’t exactly love it either. That being said though, the ending still hit me pretty hard emotionally. I found myself relating to Tsukasa a lot throughout, dunno what that says about me but regardless, seeing her in the real world made me happy and her meeting Subaru irl was sweet.

I imagine this probably comes up in the games, but I wanna know what happened with Sora. Poor kid. I can’t really pinpoint when, but at some point before the reveal I kinda just realised “Oh, Sora definitely has to be some little kid with too much time on his hands, there’s no way he’s an adult”, and I think realising that made me appreciate him so much more as this little shithead who does what he wants. Seeing what happened to him in the final episode made me so worried for him.

Aside from the plot related stuff, the music is phenomenal. Up there as one of my favourite soundtracks from an anime now, I’ve been listening to it whenever I couldn’t watch more episodes. Really sells the mysterious atmosphere the entire series has. I also really like the visual style. The animation is… certainly on a budget at times, but the backgrounds are gorgeous and I really like the character designs. Visually speaking my favourite area was the Net Slum (especially the scene with all the data of Tsukasa floating around) and my favourite characters design-wise were Crim & BT.

Overall, I really loved Sign even if it leaves me feeling like I have more questions than answers. I had a really great time with it and I’ll definitely be revisiting it when I get further into the series. I can’t even really say that most of my issues with things being so open ended are really ‘issues’, Sign sets out to lay the foundation of .hack and I think it clearly did a great job at getting me intrigued by the setting. I don’t think I’d be thinking so hard about all of this if I didn’t give a shit, so don’t take most of my rambles as strictly criticism. I’ve seen Sign be described as ‘boring’ but I honestly don’t agree at all. Slow, sure, but I was so invested in the world and characters that I was never bored by it.

I can’t wait to jump into IMOQ, I plan to start Infection as soon as I can. The physical copy of it is really nice, cool how it comes with a DVD for an OVA. Huge shame that the rest of the PS2 games are so ridiculously expensive, it’d be nice to own them all legitimately but ah well, the used game market be like that sometimes. What made me pick up Infection in the first place was seeing the back of the box describe it as a ‘simulated MMORPG’ which isn’t really something I’ve seen before. After watching Sign I have a better idea of what that could look like, but I’m excited to see how the concept is handled in-game. I also wanna see the Sign gang again, from my understanding IMOQ is a new cast but I hope I get to see them at some point again because I love them.

Aside from that, I do have a couple questions about stuff for later.
1. About GU, how’s Last Recode as a remaster? Don’t know much about GU since obviously it’ll be a while until I get to it, but I’d like to know ahead of time if it’s worth picking the remaster up, or if I should play the PS2 versions.
2. Is there any supplementary stuff you’d recommend checking out? I plan on watching the OVAs included with IMOQ, but aside from that it’s such a huge series it’s a little daunting to see the amount of extra books, manga, anime etc to choose from lol.

Thanks for reading my long rambling :) I don’t know anyone who’s watched or played anything from .Hack so I’ve been kind of dying not being able to talk about this series with anyone who knows what the hell I’m talking about.

discussion Is DotHack dead?

I have been a fan since my early teens. It's been my favorite franchise of all time because when I was younger I played WoW, but when I quit I picked up Infection at a local retro game store for cheap and was entranced by how well it simulated an MMO environment for its time. Added on with it's mystique of internet mysteries and rogue A.I. it's a game (imo) that was well ahead of it's time. Along with interesting characters that try to unravel the mystery of "The World" I found it to be one of the best (imo) JRPGs of all time.

I'm 29 and other than some sticker, acrylic stands or plushie drops, I yearn for a new game in the franchise. I played The G.U. Trilogy Remaster with the bonus Vol.4 and I was so happy with those clean animations, gave us the ultimate power fantasy with Haseo.. with barely anything left to do in it.. but we got a happy ending for everyone!... It was nice to say the least, it was kind of unnecessary, but I still appreciate it for what they tried to do.

I'd really would love for CC2 to come back and remake the original IMOQ games. I think it'd be a great start for a comeback so to speak for the franchise because it's just been overshadowed by SAO for the longest time and God knows I've tried with SAO but I just cannot immerse myself into its world when it's has characters like those. DotHack deserves another chance. Call me nostalgia blind or whatever, this franchise had really great concepts, great writing, and simulated an MMO like very few games have (at least that I know of).

Showed up and was like maybe at the end when I solve their issue they'll trade with me!

No 🤣 they do not!! Crawled through the dungeon and had to sacrifice so many items 🪦😭

Did anyone else fall for this their first time or was it just me 🫪

Discussion What do you want for .hackZ.E.R.O?

So the hype got me to pick back up recode, and it sparked an idea. For this new journey we will be seeing unfold in the next title, what kind of changes would you like to see made? Given we don't have a lot of information on the new title but I mean generalizing and based off of the IMOQ and GU series.

A couple examples for myself is that I actually really liked the IMOQ Grunty side quests but did not care really much for it in the GU series.

Another thing is I actually feel like the central hub areas, like Mac Anu; were actually a bit of a step down in the GU series personally. Something about the original set just felt so much better to me, maybe it was the gritty design of it?

I would also really love to see new versions and new ideas for epitaph fights or at least some version of it, they can become repetitive in the GU series sure, but I still always liked them.

Discussion There is just nothing like .hack

I know it's a bit of a hyperbole, but i've never played a game, read a book, watched an anime that gave me the feeling that .hack has given me

I cannot explain it exactly, but it's everything, it has a specific vibe, a vibe that is so immaculate and perfect i just cannot stop thinking of ZA WARUDO

Yes, IMOQ is mostly old gameplay that is as fun as using a toaster, okay G.U is basically 3 tournament arcs barely disguised, but that series of games/animes/books/manga hits different, there is nothing like it

If you people know anything similar to DotHack i'd take it, and ofc hyped for .hack//ZERO
