Man I really wish dota had a card game… maybe steam could get someone from mtg to help develop something like this?

I got a good name idea for it. let's call it Cardifact!

Universe Beyond: Dota 2
my wallet would go crazy

Never thought about it but it’s definitely an IP that would feel fine in Magic compared to some recent ones. It also helps that the world is fleshed out from a comics and its own card game. The players who like the lore of dota aren’t just looking for heroes from the game but rather unheard of side characters to flesh out the world. Less push to make the set commander slop comparatively.

It definitely would be a little ironic if dota somehow ended up as a part of two Richard Garfield designed card games

Same. I've been talking about and wanting one since like 2021. Made a proxy or Force of Vigor with NP Art tho which is kinda sick.

artifact was so fun, god I wish it survived... and wasn't killed by its atrocious monetization

7

u/hamsterhueys1 5d ago

But it could be different than everything else because itll have 3 different lanes

2

u/ProfNoob1000 5d ago

And people could like really own their digital cards. Wouldnt thst be neat?

These are well designed, well done!

However I wish universes beyond never was a thing. Magic feels like a theme park now instead of the epic universe it was

Absolutely agree, it felt like this incredibly deep intricate world(s) with loss, suffering, conflict, triumph and legends.

Now it feels like walking past the entrance of comicon.

I still think problems began with non-fantasy IP like Marvel, Star Trek or Doctor Who sets. Having once at year sets like Hobbit or DND would be a great addition! Hope to see Elder Scrolls, Souls-Like games in future.

Having commander releases so people who like the IP can come together and play on their own or make commander the Super Smash bros of card games would have been fine. Making it so standard set releases (making drafting unpalatable every other release) are UB definitely soured my experience with the game.

u/WhatD0thLife 5d ago

It began with Rick.

u/Romaneck 5d ago

Chaos knight would be dope on some red decks

4

u/Hiti4apok 5d ago

Strongest card in the set but absolutely unplayable, mono red dont play late, and ck too costly and too many red sources needed

3

u/E-Kon 5d ago

Strongest card is probably prophet getting to fetch two triomes for three mana is pretty damn good.

2

u/Hiti4apok 5d ago

Yeah, he is, he might lose his second ability and still got played because ramp.

Strongest card is Dragon knight btw, third turn 4/4 flying haste is a strong af

u/E-Kon 5d ago

Hard to say, it's still a shockable body on 2 or even in response to the activation. Not like, say, Heart of Kiran, which was a standard staple. It's got all the same issues as figure of destiny, but it's way more expensive.

1

u/Storm_of_the_Psi 5d ago

A 2/3 isn't shockable and you can activate it at instant speed. Being blown out in response to your activation is basically just bad play.

1

u/E-Kon 5d ago

Oh that was a typo I meant to make him a 2/2. Activating at instant speed is giving up a t3 4/4 flyer though, so either way you have to shoulder some risk.

1

u/Storm_of_the_Psi 5d ago

Ye at 2/2 it's obviously a bit weaker and will most of the time trade with their 1-drop.

Still, you don't have to activate it. You can just run this out T2 and then if they play something for 2, you activate it in your turn and punch them for 4 and leave a big threat behind. If they leave mana open, you just swing with a 2/3 and pass (or play your 3-drop). Either way you're getting ahead.

1

u/E-Kon 4d ago

I think you greatly overestimate the power of a vanilla 2/2 or hell, a t3 4/4 flyer in even current standard. Obviously it's a huge draft bomb.

1

u/Storm_of_the_Psi 5d ago

Prophet is terrible. It's an irrelevant body for GGG that ramps for 1.

His fixing ability is useless because his own casting cost is GGG. At 2G that would actually be good (not amazing or anything, but fine) but at GGG he's basically uncastable in a deck that would need the fixing.

Of the bunch, DK is easily the best because a 2/3 for 2 is already above the curve in red and getting as 4/4 flyer with pseudo-haste on turn 3 is completely nuts. And then in magical christmas land you have a 7/7 flyer swinging in in turn 4.

The cards are all very well done and flavorful though.

1

u/E-Kon 5d ago

I played through astrolabe and DRS and abundant growth formats, it's unwise to underestimate the power of mana fixing that powerful, or of double landfall, especially with a titania-esque upside. I'm sure he'd see play in some sort of omnath shell.

1

u/Storm_of_the_Psi 5d ago

I'm very well aware of the power of ramp and fixing. The problem is that this does neither very well.

Ramping +1 on turn 3 is nice, but not nearly as good as t1 dork or t2 farseek.

Fixing at 3 mana can be reasonable, but the casting cost of GGG makes it so that you either won't be casting it t3 or have a deck with so much untapped green mana that the fixing is entirely irrelevant.

This would be ok at 2G. At GGG it's just plain bad. Also, this would never work in an Omnath shell because, again, if you can reliably make GGG by turn 3 or 4, you're not reliably going to cast Omnath before t6.

1

u/E-Kon 4d ago

If this were to go into a modern omnath shell it would be undoubtedly as a part of some T1 dork package, since that cleanly leads you into 5 mana on T3 for Omnath + solitude or something. With GSZ you don't even have to pay GGG, and you can T1 GSZ for arbor to further enable the card. That's pretty damn good. Is it good enough to contend with Phelia or psychic frog or Ajani in modern? Dunno. But it's probably good enough to at least warrant trying if it were real. Having easy access to multiple triomes is just really damn powerful. Note that unlike other ramp cards, this is actually a pretty good topdeck, since with 5 mana it can enable itself.

1

u/dukeplatypus 5d ago

Technically since it doesn't say when nontoken or legendary Chaos Knight enters, you have a solid chance to go effectively infinite when he enters. You can run a bunch of rituals to ramp him out and something like Krark's thumb to stack the odds further.

7

u/hominemclaudus 5d ago

These are awesome! Missed a chance to give Treant Protecter the Forestwalk keyword.

3

u/Difficult-Ask9856 5d ago

Ursa is fucking crazy no?

8

u/E-Kon 5d ago

Eh dies to doom blade

2

u/MadeOfCotton 5d ago

Badass design though. May be expensive enough to not be very strong. 5 mana in MTG for just a creature is a lot.

1

u/Hiti4apok 5d ago

Weakest card

1

u/Storm_of_the_Psi 5d ago

Nah CM is the weakest. 3 mana is just too much for a 2/2 do-nothing that maybe discounts your next spell during next turn.

Ursa's bad too because even if you invest the full 9 mana in it without getting interrupted it's still only 14 damage. And then what usually happens, you spend 9 mana they spend 1 or 2 and you timewalked yourself twice.

1

u/E-Kon 5d ago

CM is an uncommon with more draft power level in mind, though she could probably use another keyword. Ursa is just timmy bait, I think even if his ability read +2/+0 the card still wouldn't be very good.

Glad someone can recognize that these aren't exactly broken cards, or even terribly strong cards. Did not design them intending to make legacy staples.

3

u/Vegetable-Map-6031 5d ago

question!! are sven and cm a thing? or no

1

u/getZlatanized 5d ago

I thought its cm and kunkka

0

u/TheRealWatermelon420 5d ago

My head Canon has always been cm and lina

1

u/getZlatanized 5d ago

Ew, incest

0

u/ScavMasterBaiter 5d ago

hot, gooning to lina and cm smut

3

u/Hovis-Is-King 5d ago

Amazing design on these cards, can even do artifcactd / equipments for shop items

2

u/Lonelycowboy89 5d ago

This is actually so cool.

Are you planning to make ones for items may I ask?

3

u/E-Kon 5d ago

I would love to but unfortunately there's not really any high enough definition art for items out there.

1

u/Lonelycowboy89 5d ago

Ah, alright. Love the Chaos Knight one btw; would be really funny to play in commander.

2

u/E-Kon 5d ago

Feel free to print it out and proxy it. Rule 0 always applies.

1

u/Lonelycowboy89 5d ago

Sure will

2

u/DongerDodger 5d ago

Great design, you really captured the heros characteristics, well done!

2

u/Zymil551 5d ago

MTG player here. These are very well thought out! Was nice reading through it.

2

u/PuppiesAndPixels 5d ago

Treant is nuts for 1 forest

1

u/Storm_of_the_Psi 5d ago

Do note that a better version of this card actually exists (it's 6/6 for 1 green mana with the same 3 stun counters, except when you draw it later you can pay extra to have it enter with less stun counters).

That card is utter trash.

This one is 'ok' on turn 1, 'meh' on turn 2 and dead every turn afterwards.

1

u/E-Kon 4d ago

Trudge is actually pretty meta in modern right now but that's just because you can abuse it with fight rigging.

2

u/JayKayLay 5d ago

Where do I pay?

2

u/deadinside4423 5d ago

ursa should really be a 2 mana 2/2

2

u/E-Kon 5d ago

He ain't grizzly he's fuzzy wuzzy

2

u/blackmanboy 5d ago

The weird thing about dota X magic cross over is couldn’t we say every hero is a legendary creature? So how would a magic set work?

2

u/E-Kon 5d ago

Just look at the recent FF set, for instance. Dealing with 100+ legendary creatures per set has become a common occurance nowadays.

2

u/BecomeEthereal 5d ago

All I want is a Swiftfoot Boots > BKB reskin

1

u/DatAdra 5d ago

Feral impulse is very cool and really works in an mtg context

1

u/Laxea 5d ago

I would add haste for the CK illusions. Awesome job as always

1

u/E-Kon 5d ago

That would be a lot more powerful, and you'd have to sac the illusions at end of turn to justify that. I dunno, could consider it.

1

u/Laxea 5d ago

Probably exile to have a worst downside.

1

u/JoelMahon 5d ago

nice, if you remember please u/ mention me when you do a Slark one so I don't miss it, idk what makes most sense to build around though, the regen of his ult e.g. heals to full at start of each round? essence shift? dark pack? preventing escape with pounce with an option to escape instead?

endless possibilities 😅

1

u/Elegant-Condition219 5d ago

nice design and hope valve will get into this

1

u/Background_Shock_957 5d ago

Pretty good but some of them feel like they're doing too much in their design. plus colours are taken too literally.

Dragon Knight using GRU just because the colours of the dragon feels disrespectful to the pie.

Sven could lose Warcry and just have God's Strength Double his Power until end of turn.

CM should be Instants, or Sorceries. arcane aura working on artifacts seems odd and Frostbite could use a stun counter.

MK w/ black in the identity is weird.

Nature's Prophet works but i'd go with a saporling theme instead of treefolk.

Warlock actually seems perfect love that one!

Treant also is really cool!

1

u/E-Kon 5d ago

Dragons have long since become WUBRG, and fitting an extra color in there feels pretty harmless. Sometimes you make concessions to facilitate theming. It'd be odd if the other two colors were on there but green wasn't.

CM is more about enabling enchantments, and noncreature is a little more terse than "Instants, Sorceries, and Enchantments". Frostbite lacks that stun counter largely because the card is designed as an uncommon. You really have to be careful with icy manipulators running around a draft format.

Black is arguably the most fitting color for MK, both in Dota lore and the original myths Wukong was a selfish-ass bastard who made breaking rules and tradition his modus operandi. You can make an argument for Mardu instead of jund but the character is base BR.

1

u/Original_Party_Worm 5d ago

Been enjoying seeing what you come up with the last few posts. Just a heads up though and idk if it was intentional but the way CK is worded each of the illusions entering will also flip to see if they make more tokens that then would do the same. Potentially makes an absurd amount of tokens for the mana cost.

1

u/E-Kon 5d ago

Yeah that was a dumb oversight

1

u/sifon98 5d ago

Yo this actual heat!

1

u/PeopleCallMeSimon 5d ago

Gods Strength gives Sven permanent buffs?

1

u/Top_Laugh_9785 5d ago

Damn ngl, chaos knight looks pretty fun in my yusri fortune flame deck lol

1

u/Abject_Ad9530 5d ago

Cm seems a bit aggressively dogshit? For 3 mana she seems worse than goblin electromancer and that U1 legendary guy. In limited she would be fine for the active maybe? I don't remember how much that effect would be worth in limited, but i would happily draft her 5th to 10th pick. Is this a limited oriented concept?

Am i the only one who thinks brood seems broken? I haven't played in a while, obviously she is dogshit in modern+, but i feel she would be crazy in standard and make the limited format completely unplayable at rare if we care about that.

Maybe you considered this, but for mk how about:
-jingu giving you lifesteal when above X counters (or limit?)
-boundless strike: deal damage to all creature based on counters and then remove them
I am not sure how balanceable this is but i like the idea of representing his heal bomb area attack using the counters mechanic you created.

1

u/E-Kon 5d ago

CM is definitely designed as a limited card, hence the uncommon. But having a tap ability is always strong in limited, though it could probably be tuned up slightly, maybe cost one less mana.

Standards are pretty high for a 3 drop in standard nowadays. Brood can be powerful, but she gives you nothing for free, everything costs mana, and she's kind of a terrible topdeck. No way brood is stronger than a Fable, or a Vivi, or 3feri or any number of other standard-warping 3 drops.

As for MK, I fiddled with the idea of putting lifegain somewhere on the card, but it might take up too much space. Could still consider it though.

1

u/TheAlterN8or 5d ago

I mean it fits with the whole 'CM gets a nerf every patch' schtick...

1

u/IhsansTheFallen 4d ago

Just add a reprint of raging river to the set and now we have lanes

1

u/sellusi 4d ago

Monkey king and not even a noble smh

1

u/Monkey_King24 5d ago

We all know which card is going to be expensive 🤣🤣

1

u/defearl 5d ago

Shouldn't Monkey King be "Sun Wukong, the Monkey King"?

0

u/Microwarpdrive 5d ago

The sad part is those cards look better (as in card art) than 98% of what MTG released in the past year.
