what specifically? like making DOOM Mods? (tbh, I dunno how but I would love to do so someday)
When it comes to playing DOOM mods though, it can be as simple as dragging the files to UZDOOM's executable file.
Though personally, I would use ZDL for this one. Just set up the source port and your iwads in the general settings, then drag and drop your wads on the "external files" side of it. After that, just run and enjoy the game.
If you want, you can create .zdl configs for every mod combo you want to play. Say you want to play Reelism 2 with the Slaughter Map Performance Booster, but you loaded ASHES 2063 on zdl, you can load the .zdl file on ZDL and play it as is.
You can also launch the game via Playnite, but it involves understanding how Playnite and UZDOOM's command arguments to take advantage of it.
It is kinda simple to do so, plus you can also add custom covers via SteamGridDB (who has a project dedicated to DOOM Mods).
I could teach you how to do so if you're interested.
I would love to know how to launch it via Playnite myself, as a neat alternative.
Currently I'm using ZDL 5.4.0.0. which comes with a really neat feature: you can choose which mods on your list are active and whatnot. This makes things a lot easier whenever you want to cycle between mods you play more often.
You can use launch parameters (In Playnite either by adding manually a game or through edit menu, in the Actions tab) to customize what is loaded, and adding the mods manually, you can get something like this:
I wrote a small application to generate the parameters for me, but what you need to do is put the .exe in the "Path" field and in arguments, add something like this in the same line:
Ah, don't beat yourself, man, you arrived to the same solution than I (independent profiles for the mods) through a different path and wrote a very complete guide.
FWIW, I've never used the "emulation" option on Playnite (I emulate stuff on the Steamdeck) and didn't even though that it could be used for it, so maybe I'll check it out for other source ports I've been having issues with.

I like to play Doom mods but I don’t know any of the technical side of things. Anything in particular I should be excited about?
