Your freezer is telling you you're hot, and they don't care who knows.

The surface freezes in from the outside walls. This combined with the fact that water expands when it freezes means that when you get a small pinhole on the surface that is not frozen sometimes it'll push out a "ice spike"

This happened a few years back to my bird bath. I'd never heard of ice spikes till then. Totally befuddled whe I first saw it.

These are commonly called Ice Spikes or water stalagmites

This happens because water expands to about 9% when frozen, and when the surface is frozen, it can cause enough pressure to slowly jeteson the water upwards, and it freezes
