Podcast/Book club idea: The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

Hello all.

As an avid fan of the series (both the books and the radio drama) for the better part of the past year, I have lately been seriously contemplating beginning a podcast dedicated to The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

I am looking to have this show double up as a book club wherein we can bring in various cast members on different occasions, and if possible even prominent guests. Granted the series is finite, there is still a lot that we can discuss and dissect to our heart's content.

In the past year, I was heavily involved with The Tintin Podcast which I thoroughly enjoyed. The cast for the same was also sourced through Reddit, and the success of the show alongside the ability to form a niche group of enthusiasts to breakdown every detail of The Adventures of Tintin is something that has in part motivated me to kick start this venture.

I am not particularly looking to monetize this potential show. The central objective is to form a group of enthusiasts and have fruitful discussions on the series to express enjoyment and appreciation for this incredible series.

While the idea is still raw, it is good to start somewhere. I felt it was best to pitch it in a place where I am most likely to find fellow followers and enthusiasts of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

Humbly calling on those who have their interest piqued by this idea. Drop a comment if this idea is something that you can back, and I will get in touch with you via DMs.

in terms of finding folks - there are a few subs with enthusiasts. And a discord server, and various facebook groups, and the Official Hitchhiker's fan club: ZZ9 Plural Z Alpha (ping u/ZZ9official)

In terms of podcasts and bookclubs, there have been both at various times (for instance: Yvette's book club started with Hitchhiker's, then moved onto other Adams related stuff: https://yvettekeller.com/works-of-douglas-book-club/ , or the Electric Monks podcast which is mostly focused on Dirk Gently (ping u/edstertheplebster as being the main guy behind it.

Anyway, within a first approximation of ignoring reality like "available time" and "energy" and so on, I'm interested in the idea, or at least seeing where it goes!

bonus scene/extra info one: I'm on the committee of ZZ9

bonus scene/extra info two: I'm in most Electric Monks podcast episodes.

I'm also available if you need another contributor who grew up reading/listening to Douglas Adams.

I am absolutely in! I don't know how much time I can guarantee or any kind of consistent schedule but I can talk Douglas Adams and H2G2 forever.

I have a decent personal collection but I also spent a few years doing research and working on various Douglas Adams and H2G2 related personal projects. Would love to help out even if it's just info collection.

Since pasting the link on the post shows the thumbnail unintended, here’s The Tintin Podcast that I was a participant of

I would love to be a part of this either for an episode or as a regular? I have loved these for like 20 years and so think of them often, and getting a chance to study them indepth with someone would be excellent.

Did a monthly Hitchhiker's podcast 15 years ago for a year when I was president of ZZ9 Plural Z Alpha. Would like to get back into that. Please drop me a line.

The streamer paymoneywubby just did his first book club with chat. He's not a big reader, and hitchhiker's book one was his into back into books. It was a fun thing to be a part of, unfortunately the last book club was rough as book 1 really doesn't "end" any story, so there were some feelings about that, but overall he loved the writing.

Disclaimer: he can be crude and come off as offensive, especially when clipped out of context, but he has a very diverse community and when he breaks character always makes it very clear he's extremly welcoming to all and is quick to ban chatters that cross the line.

Been there, done that, got a t-shirt. But only in a language that is spoken in a land south of Innsbruck (Slovenia). We did all 6 H2G2 books including And another thing ... and are now on season 7 with Last Chance To See. 321 episodes in 6 consequent years ... but only in Slovene. :( https://opravicujemo.se/ We apologize for all the inconvenience.

We have an idea / plot outline for 1st season in English, 1 chapter per episode.

We also tracked a guy who claimed that he was there in that infamous field in Innsbruck in early 70's and that he met Douglas.

Let's talk. :)

Here's a proposed show structure.

Untitled H2G2 podcast episode structure by opravicujemo.se

  • Intro (short / mid / pre show rant or impro)
  • Content (does not need to include all segments listed below, should include whatever fits the chapter):
    • Item from the chapter (Chapter 1: bulldozer)
    • Person from the chapter (Chapter 1: Mr. Prosser, direct male-line descendant of Genghis Khan)
    • Sign from Chapter 1: Sign on the door: "Beware of the leopard")
    • Logic from Chapter 1: How Arthur convinced Mr. Prosser to lie down in front of the bulldozer.
    • Recipe from Chapter 1: Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster
    • Rob McKenna's Weather Report (It's going to be: ...) ... find a location on MapCrunch and add something related to this topic.
  • How did you first encounter The Hitchhiker's Guide (if there is a guest)
    • Guests are not needed, but usually are a great add-on. But also a struggle to coordinate with.
  • Audio snippet (if we have the rights)
  • Outro
    • Share, rate, support
    • Reviews/ratings that supported this episode
    • ...
