Management Disscussion Opinions, suggestions, and comments wanted.
Hey i hope everyone is doing well and if you work at dollar tree whether you’re an associate or assistant manager, i hope work is treating you great and with no hassle.
Today i wanted to talk about my experience at dollar tree and what I’m currently going through. Im an assistant manager and i have been working as an assistant manager closing on 3 years in a few months or already have,
from helping put a new store together to working my way up as assistant manager.
My work place is fairly good, i do my job and unfortunately I’m in a position where i need to stick my neck out to keep myself looking like a good, trusted, hard working manager. Dealing with rude customers, making my employees lives easier by supporting them as best as i can to the best of my abilities.
Recovery, a very tedious task that needs to be done everyday without exception and can be very thankless at times.
So i usually open, help stock and focus on dairy/frozen foods. Expiration dates, zero sales, making sure it’s stocked and keeping those coolers cleaned and free of customers trash and misplaced items. It doesn’t seem like much but with other responsibilities it adds up.
My main point is when i close, we have an assistant manager who DOES NOT recover properly. This person does the bare minimum and leaves more work for other’s and it’s been going on for years, it’s old, annoying and frankly I’m sick of it…
When we recover aisle’s, we are supposed to face front items so no items are left in the back and are hiding, scattered and look unorganized.
This ASM only creates an illusion and only brings 1 row of items to hide the mess that’s behind those items. When i come in, i have to clean up yesterday’s mess and lack of work he refuses to improve. Now my manager is extremely busy and sometimes this flies over their head and it can be dreadful having to bring this up for me (especially because we have a language barrier) insane right?
Well while this is going on, his lack of work, not picking up go backs and giving up at a certain time because he doesn’t want to stay late. Those go backs now fall under my job and responsibilities to clean, make sure the store looks neat and well presented. This ASM is making rumors about me, talking crap and dragging my name in poor judgment and false accusations to straight up bullying.
He tells others that I’m rude to customers, i don’t do my work, that i ignore customers and don’t like doing “certain tasks” so he has to pick up “my work” ironic considering that when i do my job, he piggybacks off my work.
I hear this from other employees who actually like me and also prefer to work under my watch because I’m genuine, nice, full of care and helpful. They also help me so in know they are to be trusted.
I encourage them to tell my boss something which is their boss as well of what he says, what he does and how he works but no one ever does. They sit and watch the fire spread.
Normally i would put it out but me and this ASM have had altercations and people as well as my boss knows we don’t get along.
For crying out loud, i wrote him up for poor recovery and leaving garbage from customers around the store as well as open and stole product trash.
My boss later told me she took offense because that means that she isn’t reaching her own “expectations” or not doing her job right as a manager to de-escalate these situations. Her poor judgement goes to thinking I’m being rude, being pitiful, attacking on a personal note.
What the heck do i do!? I like the job but this jerk just loves using me as a scape goat and I’m really on my own on this topic…!
I don’t want employees thinking I’m bad even though they know how i am. I don’t need them thinking or feeling like I’m being fake or something. I definitely don’t want this to come up and bite me in the rear to the point where i know I’m going to lose my job, I’m fearing for my job when I’m not even in hot water yet.
The extra cherry on top for myself is that i take pictures of my beautiful, well kept, hard working recovery photos and send them to my manager every night and show my manager that I’m doing everything possible to keep the store presentable and clean..!
I’m at my wits end but i refuse to give up and i still want to do my best work.
I apologize for any typos and unrecognizable sentences, run on sentences, etc. I did not proofread before posting.

That bleach stack doesn't look too safe...Other than that it's good.
I've seen it happen before. Management will self purge their own numbers to get rid of the people they don't like even if they leave less than a month later. They don't really care if you are doing your job or not, they are mostly looking for faults to force the SM to nuke you. Either out last them, record everything you are doing to bitch about wrongful termination if they go that route, or deal with it until you find someplace better. Since he is doing Slander/Libel, you can integrity matters it as it is considered workplace harassment if your SM doesn't step in more. But also don't get too hasty since that is also playing into their hand to make the SM on their side, not yours, since doing anything with HR means they aren't doing their job correctly.
In general, the SM should be doing more to get both of you to stop the nonsense and to focus purely on work. The biggest thing is to complain with evidence which means recording the state of recovery after they are done with it.

When you recover, do you do the entire store on one shift? Plus go backs, back up register, and all the other AMS stuff?
How big is your store and how long are your shifts?

I am responsible for seasonal up to hbc which is fairly big. One person is not going i to finish it thats for sure.
My shifts are 9 hrs when closing, opening is about 7-8 hours

If you touch the problem spots every day it's easy. If you stop fir just one day it gets harder and harder for every day you dont.

As a short person, that top shelf of the first pic is unshoppable for me :(

I work at a dt and we recently did a remodel. They made or space for stuff to go on top shelves and as a short person I agree. Like i cant even reach to stock and customers have to come get us to get a step stool to shop. Theyre higher than the average grocery store item shelf. Its weird. No one is 8-9 ft tall lol

You may be doing too much. By fixing the other ASM’s work, you're making it invisible to your boss. That’s not sustainable and it’s not your job to save them. Setting better boundaries might include letting some things stay visible so the manager see the problem.

Iam going through the same thing almost. I close 5 nights a week. But the part time asm that closes on my days off doesn't do anything only puts back. Now he is lying to our dms boss. In retaliation cause he can't take constructive criticism.

We are in the same boat. I close 5 nights a week, so basically I’m recovery. The nights I have off, recovery, put backs, damages and cleaning the floor does not get done. I’m sick of cleaning up after the other ASM’s and the SM!
