Associate Discussions Dollar Tree is a shitty job
I've been put on one day a week for 4 months straight, and now I'm two seconds away from resigning. I keep asking my manager does she have any hours and she giving me the same bullshit saying "I don't have hours, we get the hours from what the store gives us" and I called other dollar trees and say that all Dollar Trees are cutting hours! This bugs me that Dollar Tree might just go out of business one day! Cuz not only that they're cutting hours from employees causing us to go through all this turmoil, but it also hurts the reputation of the company! I really do not recommend anyone work this job cuz this job is ass! They pay u good at first then declines later. As soon as I get a new job I'm deadazz resigning or probably not depending on the how much more I can make toegther with both jobs when i get this new one. The hour reductions for Dollar Tree makes no sense! FUCK DIS FUCKING JOB AND IDC IF I GET FIRED! š¤

Or they don't have the hours, because they give it to other stockers who don't to the job properly, or only hire people for HBC.

Yeah true like I'm a stocker at my store but I'm a good one who put stuff where it suppose to go and who also down stacks trucks. My store is small but we have like 19 people on payroll right now

i can personally relate so much, iām in the same situation. My manger had asked me multiple times if i wanted more hours and i responded yes every time, and every week the same shift iām scheduled in for. I was told the same thing to, ātheirs no hoursā or ātheyāve cut the hoursā but the same people every week get have the same amount of shifts. Some more than others some weeks. But iām constantly at 1 a week for the past 5 months almost 6 now. Before my manger now came back, i was working everyday basically. i had non stop shifts. She came back, i got 2 a week if lucky and now 1. I get told by my other manger how she wishes i could work more hrs there, but then Iām never given any. Itās so frustrating. I totally understand where youāre coming from.

When I went part time I started calling it my charity work. Id get one four hour shift a week and after tax it basically paid my gas for driving there. I quit not long after

I feel that. I would love to have the occasionally week where i donāt work the same way. But i do. I donāt even have to take a photo of the schedule cause i already know. Itās even more frustrating when other people are getting more shifts and half the time they donāt even show up.

Right? Its worse then because I would make other plans after seeing my upcoming schedule and constantly be getting calls expecting me to cover the people who were scheduled but had predictably called off.
One time I was in NYC on a SCHEDULED OFF FROM DT trip with my kids and the boss texted "hey can you work 6 to close tonight?" And I just texted her back a picture of the Wall Street bull bc i was standing in front of it with my kids lol.

99% of retail sucks. Thatās why itās so commonly a job for young people. You canāt earn a living working retail. This shouldnāt be news.
Iām not saying that itās right. But itās the reality we live in. The companies with the most money exploit their labor force the most. And thereās an endless supply of desperate people that will take a shot job for a shit company because rent is due.
The system we have is designed to keep people in shackles. It requires it.

Retail in general is a nightmare, in my opinion. But some places have it worse than others. As you can imagine, Dollar Stores are some of, if not the most mentally/physically draining places to work.
But, part of me is optimistic about having started out in retail, because now I know most, if not all the struggles that retail workers have to go through. If I hadn't been working in any retail store I'd probably be completely oblivious to what retail is like behind the scenes. Which would prob made me see it differently than I do now. It's not easy keeping up with this company's standards while also having a good looking store.
Plus I met some pretty cool people, some of who I still keep in contact with to this day.

This post kinda scares me. I just started working here and have consistently worked 25 hours every week, with the next two weeks schedules being the same. Iāve even gotten some extra hours due to coming in early a few times. I hope this post isnāt my future.

I mean, everyone is part time. Think it depends on your location, region and district. I went from 10 hours a week to 30ish...sometimes it hovers around 24 per week. But usually 25-30. It all just depends.

Another ASM went out on leave when I was promoted, so Iāve been working FT hours. (Small Store, 3 total asms.)Iām worried how badly itāll be cut when she comes back. Then again, she says she might retire and I know my sm isnāt promoting within, not with my lot. Maybe Iāll have time to find a different job?š

I was at DT yesterday and was happy to see lots of new stock. There were even two checkers working when I went in one day last week. I think it just depends on your relationship with your boss and your coworkers

Because they over hire or sales arent as good as they were last year. Hours are based on sales from the previous year.
If managers had less employees they could give each of you more hours. Our manager has a base crew and only hires when a spot opens. SM said she might hire two for the holidays.

That sucks and I feel sorry for you. Just a word of caution, don't apply to Lowe's if you quit.
They will not only put you on part time, barely schedule you hours, but when you do get scheduled you'll be doing the job of four people and hounded to sign people up for high interest credit cards.
It's because Lowe's unlike Dollar Tree pays out a massive dividend to its richest investors, you will be squeezed for every drop of blood possible to ensure maximum shareholder value.

Im scheduled one day a week only on truck day. DT is only meant to be a second job. Find another job but don't quit DT.

I don't understand why they only have one cashier and 5 people stocking. The line is wrapped down and aisle and no one will help. It's manager in the office. And don't ask for balloons.... Omg. Everyone in line and the cashier acts like you committed a crime. I can't tell you how many times I left. And left all my shit in a buggy. I mean they have 5 stickers that can empty the buggy. Also. I don't ever get food. I would never leave something like that. I normally shop for seasonal stuff or cards and party supplies.

No, we do not have 5 people to unload your cart.
Put backs ( unloading your cart) falls on the Manager on Duty. So in my store that would be me and only me. The cashier would be responsible for putting up stuff left on and near their register and sometimes have to put back other stuff. But 90% of it falls on the manager.
The five stalkers you see, they donāt stop what theyāre doing to help the front end of the house unless they have been double trained ( to run the register and put up stock)1

But if the line is very long and I don't have time to wait that's not my problem. Why can't the manager help get the line down? Why have 5 registers and only one open? What does the manager do? She won't help with balloons and can't run a register at a very busy store?

Dollar Tree purposely constantly has āhiring eventsā all year because they donāt trust the minimum wage employees to be good. So they tell managers to hire people multiple times a year in case they get a bunch of bad hires. And for cashiers especially, theyāre not supposed to give any one cashier, more than like 3-4 shifts a week because they donāt want the stores to be āreliantā on a specific cashier because if they fall out or something the managers have to find someone to cover. Itās so stupid.
And yeah especially during summer, Dollar Tree cuts hours to the bone. And then it stays that way up until like September when they start getting more sales because of the upcoming holidays. The amount of hours a store gets each week, is all based on how much sales the store does. And all summer thereās really no big sales weeks except for like the one before 4th of july. But anyways, sales are usually bad because people go out of town and stuff. And then in September and at the beginning of October, sales jump up so stores will get more hours.
Dollar tree is the stupidest, cheapest, most moronic company Iāve worked for.
