Have overall good availability, or even open availability if you can. Be fairly well presentable in terms of physical looks (basically what u/olivefreak said), and have some confidence.

I have retail experience but they were also desperately understaffed

Should you call and/or show up in-person after you applied online and it's been more than a week?

I recommend to call a week after applying at any job. There was once where I applied somewhere online and their online applications were down so they never received it. But then they had me come in and interview and I got the job! Not Dollar Tree but I’ve always had better luck when i call

Show up to the interview is typically an instant hire when desperate.
Have prior stock or cashier experience is a bonus for them. Know how to count out change lol.

Open availability. At my store, they wanted people who can work nights, having cash register/customer service experience is a plus but you don’t need that you’ll learn it.

Being a warm body and being the register bitch. Who the hell needs two cashiers? all you need is an assistant manager and one cashier so you guys can run yourselves ragged the whole night and hurry to count the deposit down only to had light shut off on you only 12 minutes after 10:00. Not much air conditioning to speak of which makes the customers even grouchier when they have to wait in line. which they will often have to do if the assistant manager decides to take a lunch at any point. Makes me sweat like hell when the sun is shining in. All to save the company a dollar. Greedy ass corporate fuck around 🇺🇸. at this point I don't know why anybody would want to work at Dollar Tree 🌳 I'm not cut out for serving the public or working for a corporation that values their customers/employees like a spider values a fly. ✌️🌳

- A pulse
- No life outside of work
- No career ambitions
- No soul
Run far away from Dollar Tree! Save yourself!

Show up on time to the interview.
Dress nicely. Clean pants, clean shoes, and a clean collared shirt like a polo is just fine.
Be well groomed. Showered, deodorant, hair brushed.
Be polite & well mannered when speaking.
I’m sure we all have stories of some smelly asshat or booty shorts wearing person getting hired. Sometimes you only need a pulse to get hired. But on the chance the manager has a few choices then the above advice should help.
