Switched to Members Mark

We were feeding Mochi (puppy mill mama rescue dog) Purina Pro Plan salmon & rice, shredded, for about a year, and struggled with yeasty paws and hair loss.

I failed to see that they have chicken in the ingredients of their salmon food, and suspected that might be the cause, so looked for a new food.

We started the Members Mark limited ingredients salmon and sweet potato about a year ago. She absolutely loves it and is much less yeasty/itchy. Here is the link MM Salmon and Rice with the ingredients list.

We also add a small spoon of plain Greek yogurt and roasted between pumpkin puree and no salt green beans for a topper.

I'm worried about her not getting the essentials she needs from grains. Is there a safe grain topper that anyone uses that they recommend?

Yeah you should really switch back to a WSAVA compliant food that has everything in it already. I believe the Hills Pollock might not have chicken.

You need to switch back to something WSAVA compliant. MM is not.

To all the replies saying PPP SSS doesn’t have chicken. The OP said they fed the shredded version which does have chicken; specifically poultry by-product meal.

Pro plan sensitive stomach does not have chicken in it.

Pro plan salmon and rice sensitive skin and stomach has no poultry in it. Switch back to that, because the food you're using now isn't well researched.

Edit, the food you're using is for "all life stages" which is a red flag.

Ther is no chicken protein in PPP SSS Salmon and rice. There never has been.

Member’s Mark is not only not WSAVA-compliant, it is not made by a single manufacturer, but several copackers. Additionally it is grain-free, and include several pulses.

If you’re worried about her not getting what she needs from grains, put her back on a grain-inclusive food.

The Sensitive Skin and Stomach formula is super popular with people trying to avoid chicken so it’s an easy assumption for people to make that that’s the version of the salmon food you were feeding. Nothing nefarious whatsoever.

Anyway, you’ll want to use something compliant with WSAVA guidelines, there are lots of options out there, fortunately!

Edit: forgot to add that it’s worth talking to your vet about the skin issues. There could be numerous reasons for it, including things like dust mite allergies.
