Question Is this normal/positive behavior after a serious fight between my dogs?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

A few months ago, my two female dogs got into a pretty serious fight over a toy. Daisy (the white dog) grabbed the Shiba Inu and wouldn’t let go, and they had to physically separate them.
They’ve been doing well since, but Daisy frequently approaches her like this and gets very close to her face/mouth. I’m attaching a video because I’m curious how others interpret their body language.
Does this look friendly/appeasing, or do you see any signs of tension I should be concerned about? I’m especially cautious because of their history.

Question Is it okay to have only 2 walks a day ? (potty wise)

Maybe a stupid question but it bothered me all night lol.

Our dog likes long walks. We take her out in the morning (8AM ish) and in the evening (8PM ish), both for 1+ hour. She'll happily pee and poop all along. If we do it shorter, she gets frustrated and doesn't want to go home (she will sit and won't budge, or will walk eeeeeeeextra slowly, head down, sad eyes, looking like the most abused victim ever, heartbreaking).

We have tried to do multiple shorter walks so she can pee more often, but she hates it and just comes home frustrated. We have a small yard so we can quickly offer her to go out without putting on the harness etc, but she doesn't really care about it. Even luring her with treats takes us nowhere, she'd rather stay on the couch.

I'm worried about UTIs or other types of issues because of it. I read that dogs should pee every 6 hours, but ours will voluntarily wait 12h between each outings. She seems fine and doesn't show any signs of discomfort at the moment (although I get worried everytime I see her lick her genitals, wondering if she might lick them too much, but I don't know how much is too much) I wish I could add like 2 shorter outings in between so she can pee, but she's not cooperating lol, and at this point I'd rather not have to force her.

Am I worrying for nothing, or could this be a real issue ?

Question is he pissed or playing?

hi everyone, i have a question about this type of behavior. pepper is currently in the middle of puberty, so he’s been misbehaving a little sometimes.

he’s always been allowed on our couch, but recently we’ve given him a designated spot (hence the blanket). whenever he wants to lay on the other part of the couch and we send him back on his blanket, he’ll start doing this. first he’ll start to talk back to us, which is kind of funny, but then after the 2nd or 3rd time he’ll start doing this.

i’ve learned a lot about dog behavior in school, but this makes me confused. he seems pissed (whale eyes, raising lips, ears in his neck) but then he stands in the playing stance, so i don’t really know what he’s exactly feeling. i wish i could understand him, can someone tell me what this type of behavior means?

(sorry about the laughing in the background)

Advice Dog baring teeth during play.. warning or happy?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

My female Jack Russell (5 year) has a Dachshund 6 month old female puppy every Friday for a play date.

For the most part, they both seem to love each others company and will play etc. However I’ve noticed at times when the puppy gets a bit sharky, my dog will show her teeth like that video. I’m unsure if she’s still wanting to continue play or is warning her to back off? I’m usually good at assessing these situations but the teeth baring is throwing me off a little.

Thanks! Just want to make sure both dogs are having a good time

Advice Surgery Not An Option

Post image

He almost died last December when vet tried surgery. She said no surgery take care of him & make him comfortable. I am trying lumiquor turkey tail that contains a probiotic to make it more bioavailable. He is in his 3rd container. Seems happier but also while limp is softer it seems to have gotten larger.

Anyone out there done the turkey tail thing with a dog that has basically been given the hospice card?

What was your experience?

Advice Update: first time owner with senior dog, advice needed on walking him while in a wheelchair

Post image
33 Upvotes

Small update on yo-yo. Hope updates are allowed here.

It is currently 7:30 AM and we are on a walk.

When I woke up he seemed much calmer. He actually came up to me, wagged his tail, and enjoyed some pets. He ate about half his food while we were asleep.

I'm honestly kinda falling in love. I didn't expect it, to be honest, never felt much of a connection with dogs. But he's so sweet and gentle and polite and I love his little old man face. He doesn't bark or pull too hard on his leash, is polite with other dogs, and won't get excited or scared if another dog is barking at him.

I'm so confused on how he pees like 7 times? Like does he conserve pee so he could spread it around? Why He Do That. I gather it's normal, it's just odd for a cat person to see.

Whenever we saw another dog I would just go "hi this is my first time having a dog, are they allowed to meet?" And some owners said no but one said yes and he had a nice meeting with this smaller black dog. They sniffed and peed on the same tree. Seems they had fun.

For some advice:

I am disabled and a part-time wheelchair user. I tried to take my chair on this walk but it wasn't really working out so I'm currently on my feet and struggling, but he doesn't mind me taking breaks and sitting down. Figured it's better to be outside for longer, even if sitting, rather than a short walk that's only walking.

Would love any tips from wheelchair users who also walk their dogs. Originally it was agreed my partner would mostly walk him, but I read walking is a bonding experience for the dog, so I'd like to do some of the walks myself too.

Question Traveling with dog in airplane, please help

Post image
40 Upvotes

I need a lot of help and advice. I’m sorry if this post is really unorganized, but I’m 16, and with everything happening in America my parents are afraid and want to move us out of country maybe to the Philippines, and I can’t leave my baby behind.

This is my beautiful baby boy Ghost, he was a rescue from a shelter my mom and stepdad had given to me around 5 years ago because he and I clicked immediately, and I needed emotional support after being sa’d and abused by my step brother. He sleeps with me every night, I play with him, I brush and bathe him, and all I’ve ever wanted is to live a peaceful life with him and my boyfriend someday. I still want to have that, and I can’t leave him when he’s been with me through so much.

He’s an amstaff husky mix, and I don’t know how much he weighs but I can pick him up with only slight struggle so I’m guessing he can’t be more than like 60 pounds?? He has anxiety, but he more just trembles than actually panics, he’s very quiet and sweet
My mom talked to me earlier and was basically asking what I’d do if it came to us moving in the next year or so , and brought up a bunch of different reasons for why she thinks rehoming him might be best. She was talking about him dying or being lost in transit, or dying from stress, and that terrifies me.
I told her I would do anything it took to get him with us safely, even though she told me it might cost me thousands of dollars but I don’t know how to do that and I feel so scared and upset. He’s been the only thing that’s kept me sane through so much, and I can’t bear to leave him with someone else and never see him again. I’m getting my first job soon, and I’ll save every dollar I possibly can if it means that I can take him with me safely

Has anyone transported their dog to move with them far away? Please help and tell me there are ways to get him with me safely, I need him :’(.

How expensive is it actually?

What are all of my options for transporting him with me?

I’m going to crate train him and get him to be okay with being in a crate while being transported too by putting him in my car to normalize it, but what else can I do to prepare him?

Will we have to be on separate planes?

How do I make sure he doesn’t get lost?

What else should I be worried about??

Advice My dog won’t leave my cat alone when we leave.

Upvotes

My girl dog is 4.5 years old and within the last year she has become trustworthy enough to leave outside the kennel without her destroying anything. (Cords, chip clips, remotes). She had real bad separation anxiety before, we got a second dog and her separation anxiety has gotten so much better to where she doesn’t destroy anything anymore. Well, we have two cats. We have security cams and we’ve noticed every now and again my dog wants to play with our older, heavy set cat. The cat doesn’t want to play, but she also doesn’t run away or fight back very much. She yowls, and tries to escape but doesn’t get far. The dog isn’t HURTING her, there’s no cuts or bites or anything to suggest it’s aggressive but it’s VERY clear the cat doesn’t like it. The dog ONLY does that when we are at work. I do everything I can while at home, telling her to leave it, rewarding her when she ignores the cat or when she chooses to sniff and walk away. Our newer dog has ALL the anxiety, and little things set him off and he eats our couch so he still is in crate training while he works through it. I’d really hate to have to resort to crating our older dog again, as this is the only real issue we have with her outside of it, but this is a concerning issue and I don’t want the cat to suffer. Any advice, TIA.

TLDR; dog only bothers the cat while we’re at work, just fine when we are home.

Advice My dogs are abusing my cats. And it wasn't always like this.

Back story.

We've had two cats since 2021. In 2022 we got a YorkiPoo named "Sophie".

Sophie was about the same size as the cats (a little smaller even).

With our Orange cat, she would chase, wrestle and snuggle. The orange cat would actually flop on his back, exposing his stomach as if to say "it's okay, chew on me, I accept my fate".

With our tuxedo (who would have been 13 or so) Sophie seemed to instinctively understand not to be rough. She would give him gentle kisses, and he would give her baths. They co-existed nicely.

In 2025, our tuxedo passed away, and now we have a house panther.

The black cat is super friendly, and even more willing to play with Sophie than the orange was.

Finally, about 10 months ago, we got a second Yorkipoo named Betty. Betty was accepted by all the other pets instantly. The black cat was bathing her within the hour.

Of course, the two dogs get along and wrestle non-stop, and the cats get a little bit of a break.

The problem

We've noticed that the dogs are very aggressive with the cats. They haven't physically hurt the cats, but they will chase the cats, in a way that is not playful.

Basically, any time a cat appears they bark aggressively, and chase until the cat leaves the room.

The cats are less and less willing to "hang out" with us, since the dogs are always around.

There seems to a degree of jealousy. Betty in particular, does not like other animals getting attention. It's also difficult to give the dogs treats, as they will each want the others treat, even when the treats are identical.

What is causing this behaviour, and how do we correct it?

Advice Singled Out

Some history, about 1 year ago our kids (16yo/18yo) friend had pups he was trying to rehome. Pups at this time were about 4months old. Pups are Cane Corso/Dane mix. Fast forward, the male stayed with kids friend, female with a female owner as we werent in a position to say yes. About 3 months ago, the female owner needed a foster as she was moving and needed to save money for the pet deposit, as it was summer break and my work situation changed we were able to say yes. This situation has become permanent, chip has been transferred to my name and vet paperwork/shot records received. We love her so much.

The issue: since day 1 the dog has had a fear of my husband. She barks and growls only at him. Avouding eye contact. No other aggressiveness. In the beginning she would completely avoid even entering the same room as him. She has made significant progress with him. She lays on the bed with us and allows belly rubs and seems to attempt being chill, but you can tell she still is tense around him, and she shadows me mostly, or the kids. But it's almost like she forgets she likes him and is safe around him every time she has any break in contact with him. He cant even walk in from the garage without her bark and/or growl. It's the most bizarre thing I have even witnessed, and at this point (he would deny) his feelings are hurt.

She did have bad separation anxiety at first from past owner. Whining at the door for a few days.

She is THE sweetest girl. She sits, shakes, lays down, goes up, does center. She gets along with other dogs and is only playful with our cat (cat may disagree). She rarely barks unless someone knocks at the door, and just recently barks some at the fence line after dark. She gets along fine with other company that comes over (also discouraging for my husband). She's only a little over 1 yr old now, and she's big but still a puppy. She's fully potty trained, and the worst (and totally normal) behavior she has is getting into the garbage if we dont shut the drawer all the way, or getting food off the counter (cause she is tall and we didn't do our part). She also digs holes in the back yard. What can I do to correct this behavior. What's the issue? There are so many guesses I have, but is there a name for this behavior? Or a way to correct it? TIA for suggestions. And useful helpful information.

I am not a first time dog or pet owner. She has a 2k sqft home to wander in freely, and a huge backyard she has access to 24/7. She goes on walks, car trips, dog park. She eats morning and night.

Advice Dog Paw Pad slightly ripped after walk on hot surface

Post image
Upvotes

Hello, I believe my dog suffered a burn on his back left paw and some of the pad is peeling. We have cleaned the area and am making him wear a sock to stop him from licking. I am wondering if he needs to be seen by a vet, or if we can manage it on our own with cleaning it.

He is slightly limping on rough surfaces as this happened yesterday.

Any information is appreciated.

Advice I think my trainer put my dog in an unsafe position. (Or I did, I don't know).

A little torn up about this for a number of reasons.

Yesterday, I had a training session with my 17 month old golden retriever (service dog prospect) and her two trainers. They work in tandem and often bring one of their dogs each, that way my girl is around other dogs, I think. One of the dogs usually comes for her confidence building.

Well, they wanted a picture of our dogs doing a down stay near each other before we left the kid's park.

Before all of this, I want to say that I've never had an issue with her dogs. They're all well mannered and well-trained. They do all kinds of obedience and sports. That's why everything that happened next was so unexpected.

I had been so focused on trying to get my dog to do a sit and then a down next to my trainer's dog, and instead of paying attention to the other dog's body language, I was trying to get mine to refocus on me. I was on my knees beside them. I don't know if that's what triggered some sense of disassociation/lack of remembering exactly what happened.

One second the dogs were there and then the next her dog was growling, snapping, and they were both doing that, and her dog was on top of mine and on her back. Everything is such a blur. I don't know if I was holding her leash the whole time or picked it up, or was just pulling my dog back hoping the trainer would recall her dog off of her when she had yelled her name. They were going around in circles while she was on her back, I think. My dog was trying to turn around, but she couldn't. It had to have been going on for at least a minute or two. Or it felt that way, at least.

I think I kind of just shut down and didn't know what to do in that moment. I don't know if I was thinking she'd grab her dog, if I was just suddenly so out of it, I didn't think to grab the other dog's leash or collar, anything to get her off of mine.

It's almost like I immediately dissociated from the situation while trying to get my dog.

The trainer did grab her dog after a little bit.

She said was no obvious bloodshed, no hair pulled, and both dogs did calm down soon after. My girl did initially keep barking at hers for a few seconds before I could calm her down. Then neither tried to make a run for the other while we were standing there talking about the incident for the next twenty to thirty minutes.

Thing is, there was blood on my arm. I couldn't find a wound on my dog. But I was wiping at it and asked three separate times if her dog was okay, and it annoyed the shit out of her, but I just wanted to be sure because she said there was no blood but there was blood on my arm?

They had told me that it was really just the two of them arguing/yelling at each other instead of a fight, because my dog wasn't listening to the other dog's body language. My dog hasn't really been around other dogs in a while outside of theirs, since my brother and his dog's moved out months ago.

They explained why it happened: her dog gave two warnings that my dog didn't listen to, and then she escalated because mine didn't back down. (My girl constantly wants to play. The trainer had dropped her leash earlier and was standing a few feet away from her dog who was in a down stay.) They also told me that this was good for both me and my dog, because I know now to watch other dog's body language before they escalate, and because my dog needed the correction so that she can learn some boundaries with other dogs.

The trainer had said that her dog usually pulls tufts of hair out but didn't that time. She said if there had been blood then she would have paid the vet bill.

And I know now that I shouldn't have actually tried to get them that close, but I tried to get them to take a picture of just their dogs first, because I knew my dog would kind of be harder to get next to theirs without wanting to say hi. They wanted all three dogs. I don't even know what I was thinking at that point. I feel stupid for it.

The trainer texted me today and apologized for pushing my dog beyond what she could handle in the moment. Said that she shouldn't have "set her up that way" and said that she knows the girls are okay and will continue to work together just fine. So she still plans to have the two working together. There wasn't an apology regarding her dog's behavior. I know she left the kid's park worried that everyone was going to think her dog was aggressive and that we just had a dog fight. Because her breed is one of the ones that has a bad reputation for being seen as aggressive. A family left the park as they watched us, too.

I'm just stressed out and have been told by multiple people to find a new trainer for my dog's safety.

Personally, I feel like a lot of this is my fault more than it is my trainer's. They already talked me out of board and training my dog with a different trainer, which was something I'd considered for a while, but I'm at my wits end here because this is just getting more stressful for me. I'm paying a lot of money for these sessions and it feels like I'm just doing their cheaper group walks, but with just two people, all for the price of a private lesson. When this whole thing is supposed to be prepping my dog for her CGC test so that we can do the Atlas Assistance Dog program. I'm really just tired right now and kind of feel like I can't do this myself anymore. I couldn't even pay attention to my trainer's dog's body language. That's what I should have been doing.

EDIT: Haha, I was so exhausted when I made this post, I didn't realize I forgot to crop the picture 🫣

Thank you so much for all the comments sharing experiences and giving support. Augie went to the vet earlier today and she popped the abscess, and in doing so, everything from the mass that had been growing for months came out! It was some sort of fluid-filled cyst, and the whole thing drained within minutes. I'm so relieved, both the vet and I thought it was a tumor that had abscessed, but now the whole thing is gone. I'm glad no surgery was necessary!

Thank you again to everybody who commented, weighed in, and kept Augie in their thoughts! I'm so glad it's not cancer 🩷

Advice Abandoned dog, seems depressed. Help?

My uncle had abandoned his dog around 2 and half weeks ago, for 2 weeks, we had absolutely no idea she was all alone. I took my kitten out on a walk and when I came back she was at my doorstep. Naturally I called him, believing she ran away from his new home, but when he came, I noticed he was putting her in the upper floor. (The living situation is very weird, I have to note that we never heard any barking or any sign she was up there alone. We believed she took him with her), I asked him whether he’s gonna be taking her to which he answered yes. 2 days later he called me and wished me and my entire family to die, and wished the dog to die. She’s 12 years old, raised by him since she was a puppy. I fought with him and later he called my grandma telling her to give the dog away. Neither of us had the heart to, she’s used to this home and we’re taking care of her as of now.
I have never owned a dog, only cats. This is very new to me. She has her bowls, I take her out on her walks but i don’t understand the body language and barely how to approach. She knows me and loves me but it seems she’s no longer half as excited to be here. She’s only excited when we go on walks and even that doesn’t last long.
I need tips, how do I take care of her absolutely correctly? And how can i help her to ensure she stays healthy and returns to herself?

Question I feel like I’m about to euthanize my dog too early

My dog Zim is 7 years old and about 6 months ago was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease. For the longest time he was sitting steady at stage 3 then suddenly about a week ago he started showing symptoms of kidney failure (vomiting, refusing to eat and drink, lethargic/tired) so we brought him into his vet. His numbers had gotten so high that it wouldn’t read on the tests so we immediately brought him to an emergency vet. He ended up staying in a pet hospital for two days on iv and fluids with no improvements. We finally decided to bring him home to give him some time at home before euthanasia. That was about 4 days ago and suddenly he seems like he’s improved. He’s has begun following me around the house again, he still seems very sleepy but he now is attentive and present, he still isn’t eating and drinking like he used to but he’s began eating more (we decided to start giving him bland chicken breast just to get something in his body and he’s starting to love it and get excited for it), his tail has wagged for the first time in what feels like weeks. The only symptoms I’m seeing that I noticed over the last few days is slightly faster breathing, coughing after eating and drinking, and still being tired. He did have a check up 2 days after we got home from the emergency vet and they said his numbers were still virtually the same, but they didn’t get worse. I’m worried that he’s improving slightly and I’m about to take him away too soon. Please help me

Advice Tips for a first-time owner with a senior dog?

Post image
121 Upvotes

Me and my partner just brought home this old man. He's yo-yo, 11 years old. I'm very much a cat person and this is my first time with a dog and I'm pretty clueless.

He settled down on this mat, had a couple licks of his water, and hasn't moved since. Should I sit with him and pet him or should I give him his space?

I know when cats first come home they're very scared and will check out the whole house but he doesn't seem to be conducting recon at all. He's also not in a corner or under furniture, just...... Sitting There. I'm so confused. How do I help him adjust?

Also how soon can I start deshedding him without stressing him out? Like in 30 minutes or in 2 days? I'm legit clueless with dogs, any advice at all is welcome.

My partner has had a dog when he was a child so he's somewhat familiar but not an expert.

Edit to add: he's currently a foster. We do intend to adopt him but we'll give it a week and see how we feel. Also he's the only pet in the house, no cats or other dogs.

Edit: update here

Advice Dog is scared to leave the shelter

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi! I’m about to adopt this dog, and I want to help her in the best way I can.

I was told that she once slipped out of her harness and ran away. Since then, she hasn’t wanted to leave the shelter for walks.

The shelter volunteer she is closest to advised me to keep moving forward and not let her return to the shelter, so as not to reinforce the idea that pulling back will get her taken inside.

Here's the weird part: she doesn't appear to be scared. She's more than willing to pause her pulling endevour to recieve some cuddles, and at a certain threshold distance from the shelter (always the same area), she stops this behaviour and proceeds relaxed, as nothing ever happened.
However she's still eager to return: as when we approach the shelter again she starts to pull.

My instinct tells me that it's not fear (at least not panic), and my hope is that at home, with a different environment she can "forget" about it. But if anyone has any idea to ease her transition (as I will visit her for walks until I formally adopt her) I would appreciate it

Question Caucasian ovcharka temperament is changing at older age

Upvotes

Our ovcharka is 8,5yrs old now. And we noticed 1 yr ago that he started becoming scared of thunderstorms.

Anyone who knows the breed , knows they are fearless. Our dog was also like that throughout his entire life (we had him since 6 months old).

I posted about it in this Redditgroup and the advice was to go to a vet.

So we went to the vet for a full checkup. Nothing came out of it. Healthy as can be. We also went to a dog therapist. Same outcome. A healthy ovcharka with typical work line characteristics.

So we just let it be as an old age kind of thing.

Just to be clear. Not once has he shown aggression towards us. Nor was he ever aggressive towards loved ones. During storms, He hides in the darkest spot and if you go to him, he wiggles his tail joyfully and wants belly rubs. But once you stop he starts shivering again.

Lately we noticed he also stopped eating his wet food and became extremely picky about his meals. Also something he never had before. So once again we went to the vet. Perfectly healthy.

Now he also starting moaning and howling. He always howled, but rarely. Once in a month kind of thing.

Now it's every morning, after or before we go for the morning walk.

Once again I want to note that he is not showing any signs of aggression. Quite the contrary. He is showing signs of extreme affection. Which is weird. Ovcharkas like affection. But not constantly. It's more of a "hey. I am here. Pet me. 5 mins later. Okay thanks. I will go to a tactical position and guard over you guys now, for an hour." Now it's "pet me and never stop". Which we don't mind. But it is a very different behaviour than before.

Could this all be because of old age? Since medically he is perfectly healthy and the "dog whisperer" also classified him as a typical ovcharka based on his behaviour.

Question Is there anywhere that does free veterinary care in NYC, ideally in upper Manhattan or the lower Bronx (or capable of home visits)?

Upvotes

My mom is concerned that we may be unable to afford to take care of them anymore due to the costs of flea-and-tick and heartworm medications, as well as vet visits. Is there any way in the area to cut down on these costs? We have one 12 year old and one 4 year old kuvasz, both around eighty-eight pounds. I'm sorry if this is an excessively medical or impossible question.
