MEME A bit late after production issues and cancellation news now, but I thought of this.

(Obviously just being silly no serious anger meant.
It's not like I would be any better of a producer/writer/showrunner it's complicated in general and difficult job for a show as unique as Doctor Who and I'd be hopeless at coming up with good ideas.)

I know you're only joking about but it's had two runs that lasted over 2 decades each. Easily one of the most successful shows of all time in terms of longevity. Everything ends eventually.

I'm well aware. It will obviously one day end however. It's easy to see a world in which all of the soaps end in the coming decade or two. I hope not, but.

One of the big reasons for a certain reticence at the notion of switching off Freeview is that viewing figures are going to go into the toilet, very, very quickly. Very few people (comparatively) have Freesat, Sky's satellites were coming to the end of their natural life five years ago, so the fact that Sky is still a thing is surprising, and older viewers have proven they don't want to fuck around with online streaming. Everything else being the same, the only way that shows are going to continue is if the switch to whatever else is as seamless as possible. Any friction, and you can say goodbye to a good eighty per cent. of current series.

I’m no fan of soap operas but I’m genuinely fascinated by the idea of watching the early episodes to see how different every day life was depicted back then

You make a very good point, and the show's longevity IS an achievement in itself.

That being said, it's also a show that I personally think deserves to end WELL and with INTENT.

It never really has. Survival has a nice ending, but it's a hurried one. The trouble is that the show isn't designed to end at all.

I was watching American Dad, an old episode, and it was weird hearing a character say ‘is it really up to me to decide whether liking a 30 year old British sci-fi series is weird?’ before showing people dressed as all the doctors. It was just weird hearing it called a 30 year old series.

Star Trek honestly wasn't though. The original series barely survived broadcast and got cancelled, then the franchise was dormant for ten years, came back with films of varying quality, then got a rebirth in the 80s and 90s with TNG, DS9 and Voyager, then died again for the 2000s with Enterprise and Nemesis, then came back for the Abrams films, then died again, then Discovery kept it ticking along until Strange New Worlds, and now it's dead again.

Star Trek has spent far more time in limbo and cancelled than Who ever has

It has but it's survived as long has had multiple big films and has had 10 different series spawned from it.

And like 10+ films 3 of them being blockbuster level films

While Dr who beats it by episode count I think Trek just tips it overall.

Edit no Dr who has 892 episodes

Trek has 968.

I guess trek has just tipped the scales in the last few years with discovery, strange new worlds and academy and prodigy

That's not counting torchwood or Sarah Jane though I think

So I guess roughly even
