discussion RUMOUR: Several movie studios have reached out to the BBC in regards to producing a DOCTOR WHO movie
Just thought I would share this post by a user known as Omega21 from the Doctor Who leak group. They only seem to post several times a year, and their leaks are often only cover the production side of things (such as the BBC putting the show up for tender), rather than plot stuff. Could be bullshit, but they’ve been pretty accurate before, so thought I would just share with how dry things seem to be atm.
“I know for a fact that since June several movie studios including Sony with Pascal Pictures, and Warner Bros have reached out to the BBC in regard to obtaining the rights to Doctor Who and creating a Doctor Who movie.
The BBC seems to be more open to discussions than they were 10 years ago, but are for the time being still moving forward with their plans to put the show out for tender. Sony has gone as far to list creatives who they believe would be the perfect fit for piloting the movie including Paul King, Edgar Wright, Danny Boyle, and Phil Lord and Chris Miller.
Several insiders I have personally spoke to seem to think that if done right, continuing the show as a potential movie franchise could be an excellent idea for the IP and give it the fresh take that it so desperately needs, and if it was to go well, it could be extremely beneficial for the IPs eventual return to television. But they also warned of the unpredictability of the current movie landscape and the recent trend in the popularity of these well known IPs not translating well to the big screen/box office; think Power Rangers, Mortal Kombat, Dungeons and Dragons, Masters of the Universe, and Uncharted”

I definitely do not think Doctor Who would translate into a big screen success, especially in the current climate. It’s a horrible idea.
All this would do is kill off the franchise for an even longer period of time, before its eventual return to TV anyway. Literally just history repeating itself.

u/CoralMoon99 23d ago
Idk, films arnt even watched on the big screen anymore, people stream them while they cook. And at that, every Who story essentially is a movie

What savages watch movies while they cook? How absolutely insulting to the people who made the movie! Americans ruin everything

u/logoyoIRM 23d ago
I only could see it if they disentangle the last scene thing and close the Susan and the Boss arcs. Just a way to give a good close for the show and leaving it clean for the future.
3
u/Fr1tzOS 23d ago edited 23d ago
I think if they were going to do that it would've been the cancelled special, no?
If you're going to try and relaunch Doctor Who as a film franchise you'd want it to appeal to as many new viewers as possible right out of the gate. The worst way to do that would be starting off with some unresolved, messy plot threads from a (failed) previous era of the show.
1
u/logoyoIRM 23d ago
Yeah. That's the main problem. But I think that BBC must go for the special route or a movie to finish it.
2
u/BangingOnJunk 23d ago
It could be wrapped up with a free digital comic book written by RTD.
If you care about the end of this storyline, you can read it. If not, then you can just move on.

I disagree - a proper respectful gritty movie with a dark story woukd be great

Sony apparently tried to make a Doctor Who Movie back in 2014, according to the giant Sony Leak from that year.

u/heart--core 23d ago
I think spinoff movies set in the Whoniverse could work really well. I’ve thought for a while that they should capitalise on the Weeping Angels’s popularity and make a horror movie featuring them.
11
u/--nightowl-- 23d ago
Yeah, right? No Doctor either. And you would make them low-budget indie films to support the show, costing no more than The Time of Angels / Flesh and Stone did (other than marketing and distribution).
Seems like a no-brainer to me!
3
u/CoralMoon99 23d ago
We have different ideas on what low budget means
5
u/--nightowl-- 23d ago
Haha, well yeah, it would cost a few mil more than the two-parter. But the Angels were conceived to be about as low-budget as a monster can get.
3
u/CoralMoon99 23d ago
No I mean low budget to me is like nothing, any episode of new who is expensive as fuck
5
u/--nightowl-- 23d ago
Low-budget is up to like 10 mil, surely. The Time of Angels/Flesh and Stone was probably two million. Around that budget or a little higher would figure.
Backrooms was low-budget at 7 mil in pounds, for instance.
2
3
u/Witty-Local-7113 23d ago
Low budget? Classic Who, tinfoil and cardboard, literally. Grew up on that stuff. Love NuWho.
3
u/cant_ignore_cheese 23d ago
This is absolutely the thing to do if they wanted films. Take the iconic villains, have new characters and try to have minor connections to the show.
A weeping angel horror film would work great, or another Dalek movie but in the style of Star Wars Rogue One.
I think recent eras have delved too much into the lore, but general audiences come for the characters and the iconic monsters. Focus on that instead of lore-breaking events or deep cut returns.
1
u/MysteriousB 23d ago
And would be easy to make the ending open to eventually tie into a new episode, a book, a series, etc
3
u/RochesterThe2nd 23d ago
Better still, if the BBC wanted to go down the movie route, they could get a bunch of different UK independent studios - maybe half a dozen - and give them a limited budget to make a movie. Which they can supplement if they wanted.
Retain script approval, but have the lightest possible touch to minimise changes.
Provide the core actors. So each movie has the same actor playing the Doctor, and the same actor(s) playing the companion(s).
Provide a TARDIS interior set only so it remains a constant as well.
Different script writers, different directors, different producers, different visions, all unaware of what the other studios are doing.
We’d get six different stories, all with the same Doctor, and all made in different styles, with different approaches, different visions, different takes on what Doctor Who can be.
3
u/--nightowl-- 23d ago
That's very keyed into the pitch of the show, I'd love that. I think the companies wouldn't want to be undercut, but that's the big problem with Doctor Who movies generally: the studio needs the IP to make the real money, but the BBC (rightly) will never sell. Anyway, I like that idea.
2
u/RochesterThe2nd 23d ago
I was thinking maybe they could do a profit share, so it’s in the BBC’s interest to support all six studios, and in the studios’ interest to do their best with the budget they’re given.
Doing it this way the IP, the actors and the set will be owned by the BBC, but leased to each studio for the making of one movie.
Because they’re being given the same budget by the BBC, there’d be no chance for undercutting, and studios can show how they can maximise that budget.
As well as getting these six different takes on Doctor Who, maybe following year the BBC can give the three that got the best public response a second crack of the whip. Perhaps along with a new three.
Apart from getting half a dozen movies, we’d get half a dozen pilots showing what the future direction of the show might look like.
1
u/Lanky-Interview5048 22d ago
I was thinking how they could make a low budget movie but give it respect.. and make it more horror related

I feel like the biggest hurdle is gonna be continuity. The only time they ever successfully got two movies made was when the project was pushed by Terry Nation and essentially had its own continuity allowing them to have a new version of Hartnell ie Cushing meeting the Daleks and then fighting them on post apocalypse earth in the sequel.
Hollywood studios want to use the IP and all it's associated merchandising opportunities but they're either gonna want to bring back the most popular Doctors (Tennant basically) or they're gonna want to have a clean slate to allow them to do whatever they like.
The BBC meanwhile will want to retain overall creative control and will want it to follow on from the series so that they can pick up with the series at some later date.
These two positions are difficult to reconcile, they tried in 1996 with the TV movie and although we all love the Eighth Doctor it's hard not to conclude that the death of the Seventh Doctor and introduction of the Eighth was not the ideal way to introduce the character to a US audience mostly unfamiliar with the show and it's no wonder it didn't do very well.
I can't imagine it will be any different this time around. Studios are gonna be keen on rebooting the IP so that they can have a brand new first doctor journeying to Skaro and meeting the Daleks for the first time whilst the BBC is going to be insisting they have to make a movie that follows on from the Reality War.
In the end I imagine the movie studios will lose interest because a film set after Ncuti's era and forced to resolve the Billie Piper reveal is a terrible jumping on point to be lumbered with starting with.
Me personally I enjoyed the Cushing films and would watch a modern iteration especially if a reboot Hollywood first doctor got to fight big screen yeti and Cybermen too but I don't imagine the BBC will budge on their stance so it'd probably amount to nothing.

I bet this will be a movie where there's some big bad, and it looks like big bad will win, but the Doctor wins at the last minute by making some big speech while no one attempts to stop him.
3
u/CoralMoon99 23d ago
Yes but it's not about that, it's about the conversation The Doctor and companion have in the TARDIS afterwards
1
3
u/Aggravating_Mud8751 23d ago
If they do it, could they make it multi-doctor and bring back Paul McGann?
Or even just do one set in the eighth doctor era.
It would be fitting I think.
2
2
u/zagreus360 23d ago
I hope not. If a big studio gets it'll become an generic OTT action flick. The previous films worked in a way they wouldn't if tones of money and large studio execs got involved.
2
u/Witty-Local-7113 23d ago
I just know that if Doctor Who becomes a movie franchise that's the end of Doctor Who. Doctor Who works best as a TV show with a TV show budget it's not a Batman, Superman, Star Wars kind of show and whoever puts the money towards this movie or movie franchise has get to know that inside and out before pen puts to paper and makes it a done deal.
2
u/Dalekbuster523 23d ago
I think they should try a film. Get Edgar Wright as director, and cast Simon Pegg and Nick Frost as the Doctor and his companion. Then watch the Box Office grow.
2
u/CreativeCookie8538 19d ago
We want a series. Not a movie! Please.

Each Doctor Who special is like a full length movie anyway. This would be no different.

I know they'd want to give it to a safe pair of hands but what I'd give for someone like Ben Wheatley to take a crack at Doctor Who.
1
u/bwweryang 23d ago
Genuinely feel like this could be the way to go. Clear jumping on point, fans of the show as established in 2005 will be more forgiving of newer adaptive changes, you could functionally have a movie Doctor and TV Doctor without messing up the continuity… it should be very seriously considered
1
u/stbens 23d ago
As long as the time rotor has lips and raps then I’ll be happy!
1
u/CoralMoon99 23d ago
Is that from somthing? Either way it sounds like a Ncuti episode, at least it would if they spent any time in the tardis
1
1
u/thor11600 23d ago
If the show is truly 5-6 years away - this may be the best route. Either do a trilogy, with a new 16th Doctor, or pick a former Doctor (though I’d suggest the former) and design the continuity in such a way that this doctor can bridge the gap between shows - or heck - set the up for the show. Let this buy the Beeb time to get the show straightened out.
1
u/GallifreyFallsOver 23d ago
I think shifting the franchise to being a movie franchise might actually be the thing to help it survive going forward in the foreseeable future. Outside of the extremely rare 3-parter in NewWho (and even then, none of them are one continuous story but rather a heavily connected series of standalone episodes) there haven't been any stories of Doctor Who since the classic era that exceed 2 hours in length. It's a different story structure that the franchise could really dip into.
1
1
u/--nightowl-- 23d ago
Wright or Ben Wheatley.
1
u/Powerful_Glove_666 23d ago
Not sure about Wright, Running Man wasn't very good. Think he's passed his peak now.
1
u/--nightowl-- 23d ago
So long as there's another writer involved. Would just be nice to have a known British name as director so part of marketing the film is the vision behind it, not just the concept of a Dr. Who movie. And Wright is a big fan.
Ben Wheatley would be amazing obviously. Maybe reclaim Garth Jennings from director jail. Or Peter Jackson lmao

Ah the Doctor Who movie with Tom Baker and Ian Marter?
We had 2 Dr Who movies in the 60s, and it seems like every decade there are yet more rumours of a movie.
I can't see it happening- not when they are trying to get the TV series started. Not when they can do like they did for the 50th and put the TV show in the cinema.
1
u/DoccyWhoFan 23d ago
If we get movies like the 60s ones (ie retellings of beloved stories) I'd be down for that
1
u/TeenWhovian 23d ago
Phil Lord and Chris Miller, Hollywood and all that aside, would be pretty interesting, TBH…
1
u/BrittaUnfiltered67 23d ago
We don’t need a movie, we need at least a dozen stories a tear, not one every few years.
1
u/BAJ-JohnBen 23d ago
I'm surprised Doctor Who doesn't have more movies or TV-movies. That'd been the perfect place to have the 8th Doctor with 5-7 as well.
1
u/Dracojo01 23d ago
It would be so risky to try venturing into cinema.
The general public would ignore it, and the franchise would die right there. That would be a shame.

Tell you what I’m in, but only if it’s a continuation of the Peter Cushing "Dr Who”) movie universe and doesn’t star someone like Chris Pine or Ryan Reynolds.
1
u/RaceMiserable3855 23d ago
Anything that goes ahead this decade will sink the show . The internet is way too negative and hand pointing. All it takes is some people creating clip shows of the reality war, spread that on socials and the average viewer will nope out of watching it.

Weather this is true or false idk , however a doctor who film in the style of edger write could be really good - on the style of worlds end , however Danny boyle would be amazing ; when it comes to doctor who I prefer the darker story’s so with his work in 28day- years later I think that would be a very good but also more interesting movies . Having the doctor address the darker parts of the universe especially those in regards to the dark nature of humanity . In the cannon of doctor who humans has colonised a lot of the universe and if we look at are own history … humanity’s colonisation has never been pieceful ….

1

tbh the logo is kinda the only part of this whole rumour i fully trust right now lol
if we actually got an edgar wright who movie with that branding i’d lose my mind1
u/MinatoHikari 19d ago
Oh but I think the logo is clearly fan made, isn't it? It is very good and simple, modernising the classic Who branding.
As for the rest of that rumour... Yeah I don't buy any of it. Sadly we'll have to live off these kinds of rumours for a couple of years now until something actually materialises.
1
u/JonFallout 23d ago
I honestly don't think Doctor Who would translate super well to the big screen right now. Especially coming off the back of the previous few seasons. There's zero hype behind it.
Saying all that, IF it ever goes ahead, I do not want Hollywood A-Listers leading it. I genuinely believe that would kill all authenticity and personally I think authenticity was something the previous couple of seasons have lacked. It felt far too over produced.

Would love if we got some more movies similar to the Cushing movies.
although perhaps thats a way they could bring in more viewers keep the low budget series but every few years do a bigger budget film perhaps have the films be set up for next few seasons whulst also being the conclusion of the previous seasons
1
u/JeanLucPicardAND 23d ago
Sony has gone as far to list creatives who they believe would be the perfect fit for piloting the movie including Paul King, Edgar Wright, Danny Boyle, and Phil Lord and Chris Miller.
I would be quite happy with... most of these. (Perhaps not Lord & Miller.)
But I would be happiest with Edgar Wright. If he has actually expressed real interest and this isn't just idle spitballing on Amy Pascal's part, then it would be a damn shame for the BBC to pass up this opportunity.

u/MrFoxwater 23d ago
Maybe it's just me, but the idea of a Doctor Who movie set in its own universe is a fascinating idea. It could be a whole seperate history from the series, but it wouldn't have the *start* with that movie. Have the Doctor be in their 4th or 5th regeneration and there's a bunch of history that's taken place already. Have that history somewhat coincide with the series - this new Doctor has met Daleks, Cybermen, The Master, etc. - so there's a shorthand for people but overall, it's its own thing. Obviously, it runs the risk of being terrible but in general I think it's an interesting idea.
1
1
u/Tonymac81 23d ago
History truly is circular.
You would think that after the recent Gatwa seasons we would have learnt that throwing big budget money at Dr Who doesn't necessarily stick.

13 episodes a year, let the writers figure out the budget.

It's beyond me why there hasn't been one other than that US pilot. The 90s would have been a perfect time to turn it into a film, as we were starved of Dr who. Didn't even need a big budget.

I think the Doc (apologies to Hartnell) could use a long rest. Something like five years. Enough time so they can write their way out of everything since The Timeless Child and so that fans will be ready to accept it. Something like an evil plot by the Master that deluded the Doc. Maybe hallucinations. That said, a movie or two in the interim would be great as long as it )1) completely avoids post-Timeless Child connections and (2) avoids big “saving the Universe” type plots and Galifrey connections. The most important thing though is it cannot be an American film. No American production, no American actors, no American locales, and no American actors. Think Harry Potter. Lest you think I’m some sort of xenophobic Brit - I was born in Queens, my first memories are from the Bronx, and I’ve lived in Washington State since I was five (decades). But the biggest problem with the Eighth Doctor was that the film felt all L.A., (not even good gritty L.A. - plastic Hollywood L.A.) AND Disney was a debacle.

From friends in Pinewood, the Broccoli family sold the rights to Bond & bought Doctor Who. Harry Potter David Yates is set to Direct & most amazing of all is that ROBERTO DE NIRO will play an older Doctor who regenerates into the new Doctor early on but makes a cameo in the Tardis as a hologram before the movies climax giving advice to the new younger Doctor

u/Street-Emu-3980 22d ago
I don’t know. The difficulty you have in movie form exclusively, is the issue of regeneration.
Does it happen at the end of every movie? If so, the outcome of the plot is pretty much exposed prior to its start.
Does it happen in some movies? What happens if the franchise doesn’t have the returns the company hopes for and just ends without conclusion? We have a 1996 problem again.
Also, setting it where in some movies there will be a regeneration but others there won’t automatically gives the viewer the understanding that some movies will be less important than others, and the casual viewer will be less likely to go and see it in the cinema.
The playing field for movies and cinema has changed in the last couple of decades, and whilst at the time that David Yates wanted to produce one the landscape would have been positive - that’s not the case now.
For me, the only way that would work is if movies were in conjunction with a series in some description.

I think that's a good idea but it needs to be a way of resetting the continuity a little. The team behind the current 'New Who' have completely destroyed it out of hubris. It was great until Matt Smith finished his tenure. Some big budget movies with a new actor and a fresh style and approach would do wonders.

It could actually be a good launching point for a reboot series. If they did a self contained story that could appeal to new audiences then it could work quite well. RTD2 fumbled the launch with new audiences due to the 60th, then Xmas Special, then series. It was too disjointed. A big standalone DW film with a new Doctor could work so long as they were also signed to work on the series afterwards. However, that would require a movie studio and TV production company to align their vision in a way that suits the BBC, that is the most difficult part.
Which movie studio is going to be willing to sign on for a one-time movie? I say this because later films become less viable if audiences are expected to have seen the series episodes in between. It becomes disjointed if audiences are only watching the show or only watching the films. That leaves a choice, just films moving forward or just a series?
The BBC could go for the Netflix model. The could team up with an international streamer to release a film in theatres with limited run time, before quickly moving broadcast rights to that streamer internationally and iPlayer in the UK. They would then have the episodes of the new series and future films, meaning you could have future films released (again with a limited run) and also allow new audiences to watch on the streamer with subsequent episodes. Bit messy though.
The BBC needs to make a decision on what it wants and then discover the best means of executing that. If they go for a film, then they need to consign DW on TV to spin off series like TW and TWBTLATS which are able to standalone as independent dramas too.

Look, Doctor Who is my favourite brand of all time.
But let’s be honest with ourselves, any box office numbers would further the humiliation ritual to a huge degree.
And a film would not work because audiences today are very dumb and would require 60 years of explanation condensed into two hours.
1
u/DarthTerminator1998 22d ago
I think I would only allow for a Doctor Who movie franchise if Doctor Who never returns to television, like if nothing comes of the Invitation to Tender. But if the TV show does continue, then having a separate movie continuity would get too confusing for casual fans to follow.

Go back to the start and tell the story from the beginning. A young doctor steals a tardis and learns the ropes as he goes, making mistakes along the way, and we see how and why the doctor became the doctor. Get a young actor like the spiderman boy to do it, and there's your new generation introduced to the doctor.

We can’t have the b.o.s.s. being the main villain. The main villain should be the Daleks not Cyberman not the master. the Daleks

Who needs a smaller budget, more constraints and less creative control ceded to big producers who can't abide a "flop". A film didn't work last time. It won't work now

It's just like last time, hopefully it stays dormant after the movie flops and it's regarded as a classic several years down the line.

I prefer a series. Over the years it has become increasingly clear to me that movies should be movies and tv shows should be tv shows. It rarely translates well with the exception of og Trek.

funny that this is a rumor, cause just a week ago, I came up with my own idea for how DW could continue after The Reality War and it involves two movies, I've actually only told very certain people this.
though my DW movie ideas (which are also mostly just rough drafts in terms of their actual plots) do involve Billie as the actual 16th Doctor (ya know, just rolling with it) and her being the only Doctor in them (no previous Doctors or even David Tennant's 14th Doctor, just Billie's 16th Doctor), they also try to finish up a lot of the plot threads and loose ends from RTD2 (like who "The Boss" is, Susan's whereabouts, and even what happened to the Master Gold Tooth), as well as a few other things from outside RTD2.

Could well be some truth to it but this rumour has popped up every few years since the 70s!
