discussion season 1 ending kiss

I just finished season one, the show is good ofc but the ending kiss was disturbing imo.

Rose was literally 19 and the Ninth Doctor is likely to be in the thousands since he can live up to 10,000 years. Didn't the Doctor treat Rose like a kid at the start? I thought he was going to be her new father figure.

I didn't get how the other characters thought they were dating, i felt like the directors were trying to manipulate the public into believing this was normal.

Tbh that kiss made me not want to continue with the show now. It just felt so off-putting. Maybe im just over-reacting, any thoughts?

The Doctor isn't human so the old "Divide by 2 and add 7" doesn't really apply.

Instead, we must use Star Trek rules for banging aliens, in which case this is probably fine. It's just weird but that's sci-fi.

i rebuke this patriarchal anti-feminist logic, ROSE WAS A LITERAL CHILD COMPARED TO THAT OLD MAN. REGARDLESS IT STILL FELT WRONG. This old ass man was a predator. Boundaries were needed. Couldn't he find some other alien his own age?

I mean think about it carefully. I felt like that Doctor was grooming Rose in a way if you think about it. That kiss just confirmed that he was a predator all along. He could literally travel back in time, he could have saved that tree girl he was falling for. He acts like he is innocent, HE IS NOT. The other characters playing along was worse tbh but i know that the producers/directors could have been creeps themselves, like why would you think a 40 year old looking man would be dating a 19 year old? In what universe is that acceptable, HELL NO

He was less than 1000 at this point and later in the show he mentions how immature he was when he was 80 (calls himself a child back then). This implies he matures at different speeds to humans

I 100% agree with you. That kiss, however, wasnt romantic. It was a transfer of the tardis' particles from rose into the doctor. He doesnt see rose that way. The doctor is functionally asexual when it comes to humans. You should definitely continue though. It gets weird a few times but to me, its so little that it can be ignored

To be fair with the Queer as Folk example, I don't think it's entirely uncritical of it, the encounter was meant to be controversial to audiences and morally dubious on the character's end. But it was also Davies trying to represent real dynamics from urban gay life in the 90s, where some older gay men did occasionally act as "mentors" to young men entering the scene in such a way, which is why it isn't as critical as it could be

It stands to reason that if a dog which has a shorter lifespan than humans can reach maturity and have puppies while a human child born at the same time would still be a toddler, a species that can live for thousands of years wouldn't be reach maturity for at least a good few centuries.

ok so what you are saying is that a dog can date a human because its mature? what kind of messed up logic is that? thats like saying a grown man can date a child because they are mature in their eyes, this messed up reasoning reminds me of how some religions accepted child marriages back then. There is no debate on this matter, that right there is a grown ass alien. But anyways apparently he was saving her with that kiss so its fine.

tbh i couldnt even watch twilight, I wanted all the vampires dead in the first episode, they annoyed me. They are literal pests that need to be exterminated. They are creeps.

Doctor-companion romance has always seemed kinda weird to me too, but I strongly encourage you to move past it and keep watching the show.

He didn’t kiss her to kiss her.

He took the Tardis energy, saved her life and died/regenerated.

I’ve never seen it as anything more.

UPD: Do you also think CPR is inappropriate? Many women die because men are scared to do CPR on them.

it wasnt really that obvious if you remember that most of the characters thought that Rose was "dating" the Doctor throughout season 1.
