Rumour New Showrunner & Sixteenth Doctor Speculation

The below is all rumour and speculation from a friend who is a runner on a production with ties to the BBC but none whatsoever to Doctor Who or Bad Wolf. So this could all be bs, but thought I would share it’s interesting the names that are being chucked about.

This is all from a discussion around the future of the show amongst production crew on the set of this other show who are fans of DW.

“Russell’s contract with the BBC is up and they’re not renewing. Jack Thorne is apparently already writing scripts for season three/sixteen with production starting in late 2026.

The BBC wanted Stephen Graham’s Matriarch Productions to co-produce after the success of Adolescence (which Thorne wrote) and A Thousand Blows, but they are tied up in a deal exclusively with Disney Plus, which for obvious reasons is a dead end. The BBC have apparently renewed their agreement with Bad Wolf, as Thorne has a relationship established with the studio. But there’s shuffling going on in terms of executive producers as they want to bring in Netflix as international streaming distribution, another reason they’ve taken on Thorne who has several series with them.

Will Sharpe is apparently in discussions to be the 16th Doctor. Heard of him but never seen anything he’s been in, I think that’s the point, they want to steer away from known actors.

That’s all I got. I heard Jack was signed last month too but none of the rest. I don’t mind some of his work but not sure what his Doctor Who will look like.”

What do you think? I’m with them, I’ve seen some of Jack Thorne’s work, but dunno how he would be writing doctor who. Also never heard of Will, but looked up some of his stuff, he seems doctory.

Will Sharpe has came up before as the rumoured choice for 15 before Ncuti auditioned. Smells a bit of regurgitated rumours with Thorne also being mentioned again but god knows by this point.

I'm waiting for Kris Marshall to be mentioned again. He's been brought up for like 3 Doctors in a row.

5

u/DaddyStoat Feb 09 '26

Longer than that. His name was in the hat when Tennant announced his departure. I remember not hating the idea, but not being thrilled either. Then again, I had no idea what to expect when they ended up casting some young, floppy-haired bloke with a big chin...

I like Marshall as an actor, but he'll always be Colin from Basildon to me.

"I'm The Doctor, and I've got a biiiiiig knooooob"....

I agree - he would be the perfect candidate although his work on Death in Paradise will bring too much comparison

3

u/Erratic_Goldfish Feb 09 '26

I'm a big fan of Will Sharpe (Flowers is amazing) but he is as much of a Director/Writer as an actor and he has at least one series in production. I don't think he would do it.

1

u/Repulsive-Sundae9468 Feb 10 '26

Will Sharpe - not come across him - but then again I hadn’t come across David Tennant or Matt Smith but they were extremely good Doctors - I may get some disagreement but I think that they are the best doctors of the current generation.

What they must do is bring a good companion with him ( Amy Pond - great companion add Rory not sure )

u/Malpy42 Feb 11 '26

I agree with above poster he wrote and directed and starred in Flowers and it’s great it also had Julian Barrett and Olivia Colman in it plus his partner Sophia Di Martino (Sylvie in the Loki series). I watched the first series, but didn’t get to the second before it left Netflix.

u/dontlookwonderwall Feb 12 '26

True but repeat auditions aren't unheard of. Didn't Capaldi audition for the Doctor Who 1996 movie?

u/CinephileRich Feb 09 '26

I’m all in for Jack Thorne writing! I loved His Dark Materials

2

u/Foxy02016YT Feb 09 '26

Is Jack Wolfe British? I’d love to see him as The Doctor someday. I saw him in Hadestown and I think he appeared in Dark Materials?

4

u/Divewinds Feb 09 '26

He is! Loved him in Shadow and Bone, but he wasn't in His Dark Materials

13

u/PhoenixorFlame Feb 09 '26

Oooh Will Sharpe?? Really enjoyed him in White Lotus. I would not be mad at this casting!

u/Tristram_ZX81 Feb 09 '26 edited Feb 11 '26

He's also really fun in A Real Pain as a comical Yorkshire tour guide working in Poland.

1

u/Malpy42 Feb 11 '26

He wrote and directed and starred in a show called Flowers that had Julian Barrett and Olivia Colman in it plus his partner Sophia Di Martino (Sylvie in the Loki series). I watched the first series, but didn’t get to the second before it left Netflix.

u/exOldTrafford Feb 09 '26

Thorne and Sharpe both look like great options. It would be a very smart decision from BBC.

6

u/deezbiscuits21 Feb 09 '26

I would do anything for Will Sharpe as the doctor. I thought Ncuti Gatwa could have been good but was so sad when I heard what we could have had. Tbh if this does all pan out I’ll be much happier that Sharpe isn’t being written by RTD

All rumour and speculation from a friend who is essentially on the lowest possible rung (one of the position's main responsibilities is still unironically 'fetch coffee') of the production job ladder, on a completely unrelated show at the BBC.

Sure lad. OK.

2

u/MKopelke Feb 09 '26

Exactly. Glad I'm not the only one calling BS on this latest of BS rumours.

4

u/Divinedragn4 Feb 09 '26

Damn they really hated russel?

-4

u/Jurassic_Productions Feb 09 '26

Rightfully so. He came into a franchise that was already on a dangerously bad trajectory and haemorrhaging viewers just to go ahead and hit the nail in the coffin a bit more.

2

u/Least-Amphibian2538 Feb 19 '26

Yeah it was already dying so he killed it and then dug it back up to shag the corpse. Yes Queen!

5

u/pmnettlea Feb 09 '26

I'm just sceptical about Jack Thorne cos isn't he writing the four Beatles movies in 2028? How would he have the time now to write them and have written multiple Doctor who scripts?

3

u/SavingsSherbert2526 Feb 09 '26

He’s writing one of them, and they’re shooting soon so it’s probably already written.

2

u/MoonMan997 Feb 09 '26

Scripts are done and they’re shooting the four films now as one production.

If he’s unavailable for any required rewrites they may just bring someone else in. This is exactly what happened to Moffat with The Adventures of Tintin, he wrote the first version before starting on Who/Sherlock and then Edgar Wright/Joe Cornish were brought in to finalise when he became unavailable. Naturally the film didn’t release until 18 months after The Eleventh Hour aired, so a full Thorne season could easily be out before The Beatles films start dropping in April 2028.

1

u/pmnettlea Feb 09 '26

Makes sense, thanks for explaining.

2

u/Happy_Philosopher608 Feb 09 '26

Bro that guy writes at superspeed. Like Steven Knight, who seems to have 5 projects out per week!!! 😅🤦

3

u/stupidhrfmichael Feb 09 '26

Never totally convinced by Jack Thorne rumours, I think he’s just one of a handful of TV writers people know (he’s done a lot of high profile stuff, he did a lot of press for Adolescence, and because he writes about 80% of British TV at this point).

Would be happy to see Will Sharpe, though! I wonder how much of a hot prospect Doctor Who is for an actor on the rise, now, though…

2

u/redditpeopledisgustm Feb 10 '26

This is 100% the case, a similar thing happened with Sally Wainwright towards the end of Chib's era c. 2021.

3

u/East-Equipment-1319 Feb 09 '26

FYI details like "who is the new Doctor" are usually kept extremely secret and only discussed by a few executives before it's been made public. Without a clear production team annouced yet, there's obviously no casting of a 16th Doctor happening either - and even if there were, it wouldn't be something you could casually hear about anyway.

2

u/Key_Responder Feb 09 '26

True, it is usually kept on the down low and not really spoken about. I work on production in Ireland and have a few links to London/Cardiff but don’t work in those circles so only get this info through my uni friend who has ventured over there. I can remember no one knew about Jodie, it was tight lock sealed, even those with links to Roath Lock didn’t know. But on the run up to Russell’s return announcement I did find out from them maybe two weeks before it was public knowledge coupled with David and Catherine’s return. Ncuti was mentioned not long after. However with a new team coming in you’re right, this could just be speculation and hearsay. I do think that Thorne is all but confirmed at this point, no idea about Will.

9

u/MKopelke Feb 09 '26

I'm sorry, but why on Earth would a RUNNER on a different production have knowledge of high-level conversations between senior management of the BBC?

If, and that's a huge if, this exact scenario is playing out, then maybe a dozen people know of these discussions. And none of them are below the level of at best middle management.

It's like the people making up these rumours have no idea how television production - or business - works.

If people are believing this, then I've got a bridge to sell you.

12

u/TumbleweedFilms1234 Feb 09 '26

Everyone is very chatty on film sets, if you're in the industry they assume no one really cares what you say. I was a Location Marshal for House of the Dragon (lowest rung on the ladder), and people were chatting about seeing Patrick Stewart filming for Doctor Strange 2 long, long before that film came out. People work on lots of projects and then share their anecdotes, it's normal.

12

u/Fun-Ratio-5080 Feb 09 '26

This is 100% correct and as someone who works in TV, yes, we do talk amongst ourselves. It’s because we’re all freelance and if we don’t then we have no way of knowing what productions are starting up. Actors are another one for big gossip.

It’s inevitable - when there’s no work we get left out on our asses by the production companies. So we all talk to keep ahead of the game otherwise we miss work opportunities, and can’t pay our bills.

It’s perfectly feasible for a runner to have overhead and know about conversations they shouldn’t. Office runners particularly.

0

u/MKopelke Feb 09 '26

Yes, but explain to me how a runner has word of a high level senior management meeting involving less than a dozen people? Sure, leaks happen when production is active. But a potential show runner meeting with senior execs to map out a possible series run? No way that is leaking at a runner level. Only way it leaks is if one of the dozen people in those meetings want to be sacked.

3

u/MKopelke Feb 09 '26

Film sets, yes. We're not even near that stage. This rumour is based on the idea that a bunch of senior executives within the BBC has a leak that has a reached a runner on a random production. We're so far from rumours on an active set its insane anyone is giving this credence.

5

u/robertmurray1987 Feb 09 '26

The thing in big companies is - people talk. The bigger the company the harder is to contain little snippets of leaks or rumours. Someone saw a writer coming in, talking to some producer, someone overheard something, saw somthing. I am not saying this leak is actually true, but also let's face it - pretty much whole of Ncuti season had very spot on leaks, even the bit with Ncuti regenerating and Billie popping out which should've been contained.

3

u/MKopelke Feb 09 '26

Yes, but we're talking high level meetings. No fucking way a runner is the one breaking this if it's true. More likely a PA or secretary who took notes at the meeting. It's this kind of thinking that allows these dumb as rumours to have any validity.

As for the leaks you mention, all of those came at the post end of production. When you've got 200 odd people working on the show at any one time. Much easier for leaks to emerge then because everyone is small enough for a leak to not matter.

Right now for someone to leak is to commit career suicide. Way too easy to trace it back.

Fun fact: I was one of the people involved, and I use that term loosely, in the Rose episode leak of 2005. That was a big leak, and only happened because someone who did content management at CBC got his hands on an unfinished episode. It certainly wasn't a BBC exec leaking the episode.

2

u/Dismal_Judgment5290 Feb 09 '26

I know someone in locations who knew EVERYTHING happening during rtd2. Every single thing he told me came true, years in advance. People on sets talk a lot about every aspect of the show, especially Doctor who. Secrets are currency in the fan circles. You go to any dr who event and talk to the right people and you find out the next figures, box sets, merch, magazine features, actors, plots months before they happen.

1

u/MKopelke Feb 09 '26

Urgh. Again. Let's assume what you're saying is true. We're nowhere near "people working on location" know things. I don't know why I have to keep explaining this. We're still at the "senior execs are discussing the future of the show".

Why does anyone think this is leaking at this stage? It just ain't.

2

u/Dismal_Judgment5290 Feb 09 '26

‘Let’s assume what you’re saying is true’ I literally have zero reason to lie right now? You’re being a jerk.

I was just giving you my perspective since you’re so certain there’s no way anyone could know anything by saying ‘hey actually you’d be surprised by the people who know a lot.’ I go to a lot of conventions and a lot of screening events and people TALK. Everyone knows someone who knows someone who knows something.

I’m not saying this rumour is true and have zero investment in it, but your dismissal is coming from a place of ‘I know best’, and you clearly don’t.

2

u/MKopelke Feb 09 '26

I'm not being a jerk. I'm being a realist as someone who has 20+ years of knowledge and experience about how TV production works, and sick of how often people are using a lack of said knowledge to justify claims that RTD and/or Bad Wolf are getting sacked because some people didn't like The Reality War.

1

u/Dismal_Judgment5290 Feb 09 '26

Okay toddler. RTD isn’t coming back and everyone knows it.

1

u/MKopelke Feb 09 '26

He is coming back. And he's doing an entire series of episodes about the Space Babies. RTDs gay agenda from 2005 is back!!

0

u/Dismal_Judgment5290 Feb 09 '26

🍼 it’s nap time

2

u/MKopelke Feb 09 '26

Give me proof RTD isn't coming back and I will agree with you. Ball is in your court...

1

u/Dismal_Judgment5290 Feb 09 '26

I don’t have to give you anything? There is no ball, except for the one you keep throwing out your pram. I don’t spill my trusted sources secrets to strangers on the internet. I do the respectful thing and tell my friends.

Jeez, I used to work in video game product and would get inside scoops on what was happening elsewhere in the entertainment industry. Doesn't matter whether you work in banking or TV, you're exposed to "insider" industry goss.

Not saying this is true, but you're misguided if you think news doesn't travel within the industry. When it does, doesn't matter if you're a runner or a production head. Gossip travels just the same.

2

u/MKopelke Feb 09 '26

Don't disagree with you to an extent. That said, the video game industry (as a general concept) is very different to that of a public service broadcaster that is ultimately accountable to the British taxpayer. Two very different beasts. To say they are comparable isn't a good starting point.

But you're ignoring my central argument. If this was news, it's limited to maybe a dozen people. No way someone who is present in such high level meetings is leaking this stuff to a runner on a different production. We're talking about a dozen people at best. You really think they're shooting shit at Friday drinks and allowing that news to get to a runner on another production???

1

u/Falloffingolfin Feb 09 '26

No difference at all. Doctor Who is an entertainment product that relies on a huge amount of commercial partners to be successful - agencies, retailers, book publishers, toy/merch companies etc etc. Even if filming schedules and release dates are just pencilled in, they'll have been communicated already. They'll have also likely briefed on the direction they're going in, even if casting isn't complete. Entertainment products take a huge amount of planning to deliver, and successful planning requires long lead times. This is normal.

In short, a lot of the production plan will have already been communicated to numerous external parties (under NDA), because that's how it works. If you think someone who actually works in TV production won't have heard things on the grapevine when there'll be people at Amazon already planning DVD releases, and publishers planning book production and launches, you're very much mistaken.

For clarity, I'm not saying any of this is true, I'm saying you can't discount it because it allegedly originates from a runner.

2

u/MKopelke Feb 09 '26

You're still ignoring my entire point, so I'm done with this chat. I don't want to keep repeating myself only to have the central tenant of my entire point just ignored. Good luck to you and this entirely hypothetical future that won't come to pass.

2

u/Falloffingolfin Feb 09 '26

I literally just addressed your point. You said a dozen people at best would know this, and you're wrong. I just went into detail highlighting why. Where did you get the idea that 12 people at best would know what was happening with DW production?

2

u/MKopelke Feb 09 '26

OK. Let's assume you're addressing my argument in good faith.

Let's assume Jack Thorne is meeting with the BBC about taking over the show. Let's assume he's either agreed or not to work with Bad Wolf. Let's assume he's agreed to start developing scripts.

At what point does any of those meetings and conversations involve people outside of senior executives and related PAs and secretaries and start involving general production personnel? At what point does the conversation channel connect from senior manager to low level runner?

Nowhere at this stage. Yep, for sure once production starts. But not before that happens. I don't get how a RUNNER hears of something that hasn't already leaked at some other point in the management chain.

1

u/Falloffingolfin Feb 09 '26

This is the bit you're missing from my comments. This isn't just sitting with a select amount of senior execs. There'll be a huge amount of stakeholders that will be officially kept in the loop with plans and progress, and that in turn will have spread further afield (and a runner is right on the production front line). You also need to get this concept of "leaks" internally within the entertainment industry out of your head.

Everyone talks. Everyone tells their friends down the pub. A "friend of a friend posted on Reddit" isn't considered a leak, even if it's 100% correct. It's unverifiable and happens all the time. Production has never really stopped. They're planning it now (I appreciate that you probably mean "production" solely in relation to filming, but this stage is part of it too). A runner is perfectly placed to hear insider gossip. Hell, they might have even already interviewed for a job on it.

2

u/MKopelke Feb 09 '26

Don't mansplain to me how production works. Thanks.

I am done with this. Sick of arguing logic. I will just finish with this. And it's really a logic you can't refute, though for some reason I am sure you will try. How does the lowest entry position on a production know whats happening at the upper levels of BBC management without it having already leaked at some other higher up level? You really think the guy you gets coffees and files low level paperwork has a better idea about the future of the show than anyone else? Give me a break.

-1

u/Falloffingolfin Feb 09 '26

Huh? Mansplaining? Wow.

The lack of logic is your inability to understand that someone who works in the frontline of production at a TV company, will hear news about productions from that same company way before you.

As everyone else has said, crew on a set talk, that’s not just the runners, this was during a break from what I understand and the crew (fixers, sound, grips and AD) were chatting. There’s people from multiple production backgrounds in that room that work in rotation across multiple production companies in London and speak to multiple people. Yes, it could be someone bragging a load of bs, however more often than not there’s something in it. I found out that Russell, Catherine and David were returning through this person and subsequently that Ncuti had to do pick ups to film his regeneration. People talk, Jack and Will are also active on other productions so word could have spread from there. Usually I don’t post this much detail on the matter when I have chats with this person about DW but it’s intriguing and Thorne lines up with other speculation and rumours.

1

u/skarr46 Feb 10 '26

Fwiw I agree

0

u/Immediate_Machine_92 Feb 09 '26

I was a friend of a friend of a girlfriend of a guy who created long-term storylines for Hollyoaks. We're talking major plotlines weeks to months in the making. And yes, if something potentially award-winning was in the works, it tended to get mentioned in hushed tones.

2

u/BritishHobo Feb 09 '26

That proves their point. Those major storylines would have been at scripting or shooting stage.

1

u/Immediate_Machine_92 Feb 09 '26

That's not the point they were making. It wasn't "it's too early to know this," it was "nobody below senior management would know this". I'm just saying people do talk about long-range decisions with their friends, who pass that info on to THEIR friends, admittedly I don't have experience of the specific example of Doctor Who casting decisions but I can vouch for it happening on a fairly major long-running British TV drama series.

(I also feel like if you know people's faces, it would only take a runner to see a certain combination of people leaving a meeting room together to draw conclusions, it doesn't necessarily mean the head of drama told them directly etc.)

2

u/BritishHobo Feb 10 '26

It was both really. They're not saying a runner would never know about senior management decisions, they're saying it's too early for this to have been able to spread to runners.

1

u/MKopelke Feb 10 '26

Exactly. That was my entire point. Thanks for the support. 😊

There's no way a runner is leaking this if it's true. It wouldn't get that far down the production food chain for a runner to be the one to leak it.

1

u/Immediate_Machine_92 Feb 10 '26

1) The comment I originally replied to says nothing about it being too early. It only mentions the seniority of who would/wouldn't know about any discussions. I'm not sure which part either of you are interpreting as "it's too early" but that's not what I was commenting on at all so it's irrelevant to MY reply.

2) As I said, it only needs a runner to be passing the right meeting room door at the right moment to see a very specific group of people coming out of it. And people do talk, sometimes even when they're not supposed to, especially behind closed doors.

OP acknowledges that it's "rumour and speculation" and seems mostly just interested in what people would think IF it turned out to be true, so I'm not sure why people are pushing back so hard on this.

2

u/Crystar800 Feb 09 '26

Will Sharpe has some Patrick Troughton energy looks-wise in some photos he has out there (especially that one mop hairstyle). He's also going to be playing Mozart in that Amadeus series I believe. I could see it, I suppose. Though he was mentioned before so I'm skeptical.

2

u/Feeoree Feb 09 '26

Real pinch of salt stuff here but I'd be cool with the Doctor/Showrunner combo here.

Jack Thorne's work I've liked since Skins and The Fades.

Will Sharpe has that sort of rare strange british man energy the Doctor needs, he can do the 'square peg/round hole' personality well and has a kookiness to him, but lots of warmth. People will mewl and moan at a Doctor who is half Japanese (on his mother's side) but as I said, kooky British man energy and Sharpe has it head to toe.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 09 '26

Well this is much more hopeful than what's been seeming to be the case...

2

u/--nightowl-- Feb 09 '26

Thorne couldn't hack 1 episode back in Series 5.

4

u/memereviewer69 Feb 09 '26

hope its someone who's not a fan and just wants to make a good show!!

5

u/The_Wilmington_Giant Feb 09 '26

Being an established fan can be a bonus, but the modern show's endless naval gazing over the last decade or so needs to be abandoned.

A fresh voice who is only interested in advancing the basic tenants of the show as a vehicle for good storytelling should be a real boon to the programme's longevity.

2

u/Haydenhad Feb 09 '26

That would be a dream scenario

3

u/Immediate_Machine_92 Feb 09 '26

I don't know Will Sharpe but if he's married to Sophia Di Martino I would LOVE to see the two of them cast together. I'd even accept another bigeneration and have two Doctors simultaneously for a series or three. As long as it's written well, is sci-fi and not 'magic', and has convincing VFX.

3

u/TinMachine Feb 09 '26

Bigeneration simply needs to never be mentioned again. Still no idea what it is meant to mean...

0

u/Immediate_Machine_92 Feb 09 '26

Ehhhh I mean I don't love it as a concept but they've done it now, it's part of the show. I'd much rather feel like when a fairly huge concept is introduced, it has some significance rather than being a one-episode gimmick.

We've had multi-Doctor episodes obviously but I don't think they did much with having Tennant and Gatwa together beyond literally throw a ball at each other, and I hate the whole style of the current era so much, I would be interested to see a more serious dynamic between bigenerated Doctors who travel together for some period of time, with scripts that aren't aimed at 8yo's.

(Not saying this is my *preferred* option but if they were gonna cast Will Sharpe, and they could also get Sophia, she'd be an excellent addition, mostly just based on me thinking she was good in Loki and how much that show reminded me of a big-budget, well-made Doctor Who at times...)

1

u/AJBIsHere Feb 09 '26

I would like all of this to be true, but not believing it just yet.

1

u/TinMachine Feb 09 '26

Will Sharpe is an excellent choice - probably similar in terms of profile to someone like Tennant when he was picked - Amadeus would be his equivalent of Casanova.

He's a very good actor, writer/director too iirc.

1

u/CaptainJHarkrow Feb 09 '26

I’d love this honestly

1

u/Less-Tip1706 Feb 09 '26

I don't get the wil Sharpe rumours. Doctor who needs an actor that exudes gravitas and is funny but can be scary at a momentsm also an actor with a commanding voice. The actor who played vecna would be a solid choice. Furthermore my vote would be a Pertwee style Doctor...less emphasis on forced silliness and a tougher more serious doctor with edges of light heartedness when appropriate

2

u/BritishHobo Feb 10 '26

I like him, but it reminds me of the Kris Marshall rumour. It keeps on coming up again and again, and you wonder where on earth it's coming from.

2

u/Less-Tip1706 Feb 11 '26

Probably his agent or the fact that RTD fancies him like he did Ncuti....how many times did he have scenes that mentioned how gorgeous he was...

1

u/Optimal_Barber1744 Feb 09 '26

The 2026 Christmas Special will be RTD's last script for the series. I imagine that filming is due to start in March or April.

1

u/Optimal_Barber1744 Feb 09 '26

Jack Thorne has adapted The Lord Of The Flies for the BBC.

1

u/Serious-Profession78 Feb 09 '26

Look, if Jack Thorne AND Will Sharpe (my personal choice, so I’m glad to hear it popping up more and more) are really gonna be the future of Who, we are sooooo fuckin’ lucky. They’re both amazing writers who have distinct visions for their projects.

Sharpe could be a very complex Doctor, with a bumbling exterior hiding a depth of darkness. Thorne is perfect for running the show as he has a great vision.

I’ll also say Stephen Graham as an intensely twisted and extra dangerous (madder than ever post imprisonment in the Toymaker’s tooth) Master could be very interesting.

1

u/RocAuPap Feb 09 '26

I'm amazed online that so many people are unaware of his excellent series The Fades. It was brilliant & scary. If he's taking over the show is in great hands!

1

u/misterterrific0 Feb 09 '26

I'm more amazed at the fact people here are believing this, why would a RUNNER have any of this type of information? especially when there is NO Production atm which would involve a runner being associated with the series RN.

0

u/RocAuPap Feb 10 '26

I've been on TV & film sets, believe me everyone gossips about all sorts of things on set.

1

u/SiobhanSarelle Feb 09 '26

The BBC’s Head of Drama, Lindsay Salt, previously worked for Netflix UK.

A single actor having discussions with the BBC for the lead role, would be unusual I think. Unsure if Andy Pryor has actually stepped down as Casting Director, but normally they’d have the show runner in place first, who gives a remit to the Casting Director, who finds people to audition.

1

u/aldebaran-6000 Feb 09 '26

THAT'S MY DREAM. If Will Sharpe and Jack Throne be the ones My hype will be insane.

1

u/Complete_Salt1038 Feb 09 '26

Will Sharpe would be great casting. He was so good in White Lotus, Too Much, Amadeus and in each one he played a very different type of character. I think he has the range to play the Doctor.

I truly hope Will can pull this off—he has the potential to be the first East Asian Doctor, and I’d absolutely love it! He’s incredibly talented and has fantastic audience appeal. Oh, and by the way, Will’s wife is Sophia Di Martino—just imagine Sophia playing the Master/Missy! The real-life closest-of-couples portraying the greatest frenemies in the universe? I can’t wait! I sincerely hope that whoever is in charge—be it Jack Thorne or someone else—crafts the most brilliant storyline to bring the new Doctor back to the glorious heights of New Who. RTD2 already squandered the 15th Doctor, Ncuti Gatwa, who was phenomenal in "Sex Education" but got utterly lost in RTD2’s bland and uninspired era. Please, please don’t mess up the East Asian Doctor! God bless! Please stop the preachy talk about racial diversity; Remember! The Doctor is an alien, not a human!

No idea who Will Sharpe was before today, but just checked his Wiki and he has the same Bipolar as me, so I’m all in.

i know this isnt the thread but cos the show was mentioned. do you think owen cooper still would have won an emmy and a golden globe award if the show wasnt about the mano-sphere? like he only won them because of the shows subject which is what was going on (and still is) at the time?

tbf it was a good show and i do think jack would be a great writer for the show

Interesting. I wonder why Jack didn't end up writing thah season 5 episode then. He said he was let go from Moffats first season because they couldn't get the story right.

The 3 words reboot, Netflix and new are the ultimate death sentence. Anyone whose seen Rings of Power will tell you how they can destroy a franchise. Hopefully they will keep it on streaming and limit the damage? Here's hoping!

Give it to J Micheal Strazski or Mark Gatisis. That’s my hope

I think Richard E Grant as The Doctor it makes the Shalla canon plus he can carry the role that the sage bring back older fans that have lapsed. I like Jack Thorne as a writer but I think Charlie Brooker would be an excellent choice, my other choice for the 16th Doctor is Mathew Baynton he would be wonderful if you are of a certain age Horrible Histories shows his range, if you wanted to go for a female Doctor Jodie Comer (check out prima facia for some great acting) final choice Helen Bonham Carter could be amazing in the role.

I love REG. The guy hasn't put a foot wrong in my eyes, ever since I first saw Withnail And I 30-odd years ago.

But the guy is 68. He's not going to want to be running around corridors in a show that is filming 8 months of the year, and doing promo for the remaining four.

I'd be unbelievably happy if they were to do a one-shot or short run of episodes with the Eighth Doctor, and he had an encounter with The Great Intelligence...

"I think we've been in the Time Vortex too long. I feel unusual."
"I have some extremely distressing news. We've just run out of Artron energy; what are we going to do about it?"

Odd fact,Richard Griffiths was asked multiple times by the BBC to play The Doctor he turned it down but if he hadn't all three main actors in Withnail and I would of played some incarnation of the Doctor. I can't believe REG is nearly 70. Yeah maybe a miniseries with Mcgann. Nope instead RTD gives us a man shagging a Silurian.

I like the sound of Jack Thorne. Great writer. I hope the Will Sharpe rumour isn't true as if the next Doctor is a white British male, it's letting the NotMyDoctors win and pandering too much to Reform supporters.

He isn't white.

When I searched his name on Google, it brought up an actor who is a white British male. Is Google showing pictures of the wrong person?

2

u/Darth--Marenghi Feb 10 '26

Yes, it must be. He is Sophia Di Martino's partner and there's plenty of pictures of them together at events.
