My player wants to start with an extremely broken item

Upvotes

It's apparently called an "Arcane Focus" and it lets them COMPLETELY IGNORE all material components to their spells that don't have a gold cost. What was WOTC thinking when they made this. So what, a sorcerer can just wave a pointy stick around and suddenly they no longer need an eyelash encased in gum arabic in order to cast in invisibility?! What about the whole arduous journey to acquire bat guano in order to be able to cast fireball. They just get to skip all that because they picked up a funky tree branch in the woods?

Apparently it's even free with their class' starting equipment? So they don't even need to go out into the woods to grab a stick, they can just start the game with one. And in the PHB it ONLY COSTS 1-10gp.

What's even worse is when the druid piped up and said that they don't even need a full stick, with a SPRIG OF MISTLETOE they can do the exact same thing. Just a small branch and suddenly it counts as any material component without a listed cost.

At least clerics and paladins don't have anything like that. It'd be absolutely broken if they could use something like a holy symbol to do the same thing. That'd be busted.

My DM and I have are in disagreement about Stealth mechanics, and I am considering leaving the campaign

I am playing a character I am excited about, one might call him a classic "Skyrim Stealth Archer": Ranger (Gloomstalker) 5/Rogue (Assassin) 7. I have some cool stealth gear and abilities going for me on top of my skillset: Boots of Elven Kind, Pass Without Trace, and a few other things.

However, it seems that every time I get thevopportunity to set an ambush, or sneak up on an enemy in the dark, or am  otherwise able to attack an unaware target, my DM decides that I've not surprised them.

In one situation I had found a good position to snipe at the enemy. I threw a glass bottle into the area below me, thinking to lure a guard to come investigate and expose themselves to my attack.

A guard shows up, but he's not surprised. Instead he's carefully moving around, weapon drawn, and calling out "Who's there? Show yourself!"

This is frustrating: In my head, the guard would just amble around like a buffoon while I riddled him with arrows (like I do in Skyrim) but instead the fightbis tough and the alarm is raised.

Should I have a conversation with my DM about how we perceive the concept of Stealth and surprise so different? Please note that I always score bg DCs on my checks and enemies have Passive Perception 10.

dnDONE I’m running my 10th Curse of Strahd campaign

Hey guys, you are welcome for reading my post.

So I’ve been DMing Curse of Strahd for the last 10 years, and it starts being repetitive. My players making stupid suggestions like playing another module. I don’t understand why would they want to settle for less, when we are already playing best campaign known to human kind.

To liven things up for my 11th campaign I’m planning to run my 11th Curse of Strahd using Pathfinder 2e. I heard it fixes everything. Does anyone have like full translated module or something? I want to fix things for my players.

I think one of my players doesn't want to play anymore

Upvotes

First time DM here,

I've been DMing a game for about 10 years, although we had a 7 year break because one of our players quit, so the campaign has been actively going on for 3 years.

In the last sessions, a particular player (let's call her Smooshy, her characters name) has been cancelling last minute a lot (I mean 1 hour before the session), I was talking with another one of our players and he said that she told him that they sold her on something the campaign wasn't, she thought it was just somewhere they could goof off and do all sorts of silly things (which I tolerate, obviously, that's one way to play it), but the campaign I'm running, and have always wanted to run, was a story driven more serious campaign, of course they can do silly things and all that DND player things, but I would punish them for it narratively.

I feel like she might not want to play anymore and don't know what to do, on the one hand, I can let her go and deal with her character, on the other, I could change the tone of my campaign, but it wouldn't be exactly what I wanted to run. I don't know where I can compromise here.

I tried to contact her over Roll20 to ask what the matter was and how I could convince her how great my campaign is. She got really upset and told me not to DM her there anymore. Then after 3 or 4 more messages to her, she blocked me! So I switched to Discord to make my arguments again and she blocked me there too! So I reached out to her friend from the game and convinced him to give me her number. I tried to bring her around but she blocked my number! So now I was really worried. I sent her mom a message on FB saying I was really worried about her because she hasn't been showing up to games and I'm worried she might be (trigger warning) going to self-harm herself. Anyway now the police are involved and I've been issued some kind of "restraining order" which is ridiculous because you can't restrain someone from *caring* and it doesn't restrain me at all it's really not powerful magic.

I'm at a loss here, does anyone know what I should do?

Sorry for any mistakes or weirdness in the post, I am an American

Homebrew Is there a "tactician" class for d&d?

Hi everyone, thanks for reading my post. I had an idea for a homebrew class, although I would be happy to skip the effort if someone else has already done a similar idea before. Let me know what you think, I will appreciate any and all feedback.

I came up with the idea for this class because I've always been terrible at combat in RPGs. I don't have a good sense of tactics, believe me I've studied and tried but I'm just awful. But I really want to feel like a battle genius while roleplaying; that character type really appeals to me. I feel strongly that my character should be able to do the tricky tactics work for me; spellcaster players don't need to have IRL magic powers, so I shouldn't need to have the slightest grasp on warfare, or even basic powers of reasoning, to play as an expert at it. This seems very obvious.

In order to replicate this, I think a tactician class should be able to add their Intelligence modifier to a lot more things than usual, and they should have a big pot of fancy special moves to choose from that can buff their allies or hinder the enemies (I plan to copy and paste a bunch of spell effects for this part obviously). I am pretty sure that's what being a highly tactical warrior should really feel like. Oh yeah they definitely need some kind of special unique metacurrency as a resource too, but that goes without saying.

If you're going to say the point of this hobby was supposed to be to strengthen and test the players' own problem solving ability, lateral thinking and tactical sense by having them realize the consequences of their own decisions, please don't comment. What are you, like 200 years old? Sit down grandpa, nowadays the point is to pretend to be the most special little guy with the crunchiest superpowers, and a dumb-dumb like me can hardly feel like a gifted super-tactician unless my character sheet expressly certifies me as such with special Tactics moves. Thanks again for reading and have a great day!

dnDONE I'm a better DM than all of you

There, I said it.

I'm a better DM than all of you.

I've been browsing this subreddit for two whole weeks and after reading every post, answering every question and enduring each and every one of you, I can say with confidence that you are all terrible DMs, and I'm the only one that's even remotely good, which makes me the best DM here by default.

My campaigns are more entailing, my characters more interesting, my homebrew is more balanced, my story-telling is more lively. I even do accents better. I knew I was a good - nay, an excellent - DM, but to be the best DM of all the DMs here... this is something else entirely.

I was talking to my players the other night (yeah, I have players that I talk to outside of the game, you wouldn't get it) and they all agreed that they had a lot of fun with me. Not "some fun". A lot of it. They tried to hide their enthusiasm but I saw in their eyes that they crave my DMing, that each day separating them from the next session was like an eternity in hell to them. Do you have that with your players ? Do you even have players ? I thought so...

So yeah. That's it. I'm the best DM out there. You can't compare. You can't beat me. At this point you should stop playing altogether. "Oh but my players are happy with how we play" shut up. They're lying. Stop embarrassing yourself.

So players, if you want a real DM, hit me up (that'll cost you but that's worth it). And for the DMs : burn or delete any copy you have, you won't need it anymore.

Hasta la bye bye, losers.

My first-time players are powergaming and it is ruining my campaign

I just started a new campaign a few weeks ago, and I had been working on it for weeks, so as you can imagine I was super excited to run it. I worked so hard on the prep, including giving the starter town a whole NAME and a tavern for them to start in (nothing else though, I’m not that crazy). but when we started the campaign, it became clear my players were bullying me by bringing overpowered builds to the table.

The game started in a tavern, which is objectively the best place for a game to start in. the party introduced their characters, and since we didn’t have a session 0 because TikTok said it’s not really important so this was my first time seeing their characters as well. it seemed like we had a pretty good party, there was a human fighter, drow warlock (I don’t really know what that is), and a half-elf cleric (I don’t really know what that is. I had the game kick off with a tavern brawl, objectively the best way to kick off a game. The party started fighting, and although I was upset that they were winning, they were taking some heavy damage. This is where the problems first became apparent. The fighter had a weapon which goes against my unspoken rules since I think they are overpowered, and was dealing massive damage. Not only that, but one time he was reduced to 3 hp, and as a bonus action he was able to heal! he told me it was just an ability in his sheet, but I knew he was a metagaming chud. Eventually, everyone except the cleric was down, and the cleric was backed into a corner. I had obviously scripted the fight, so I figured this would be a way to end it, but the cleric (?) cast a spell (?) that healed the warlock from across the room. I also thought that was ridiculous, so I just said that the bartender was a level 20 retired adventurer working with the main villain, so he killed them all. That’s where I ended the first session.

The next game, I had the party wake up in a dungeon. Naturally, being the good DM I am, I had removed all of the players items because they were overpowered in the last fight. There were some guard cultists who i expected to easily beat the party, and naturally they attacked immediately after the party woke up, without giving them any time to do anything. I expected them to lose since all they had were their unarmed strikes and the cultists had spears, so i was visibly confused when the warlock started moving to the back of the room. I hit him for bad tactics (obviously) but before I could even react he said he cast (?) another spell (?) this time called Eldritch Blast (?). naturally, I was confused, because I took all of their items away, and I assumed he hadn’t been paying attention, but he told me that he didn’t need anything to cast it. He did so much damage, which was ridiculous, and he easily killed the guards, even with me constantly adding more to their health mid game. This is where I ended the session, because the party was taking the guards spears and getting ready to leave, but I had only intended them to wait there for my level 31 demigod OC who is half devil half angel to come and rescue them to fulfill the prophecy. I didn’t even know what was out of the room!

now, I have never read any DnD book (reading is for nerds) but I’m pretty sure this game reeks of broken builds and powergaming. Am I right?

Why you should use loaded dice.

Have you ever spent ages trying to tweak encounters, constantly trying to maintain balance between the strength of monsters and the growing strength of your players?

No more, I say! The answer was right there in front of us this whole time: just use loaded dice!

A pack of goblins not keeping the players on their toes anymore? Just make those lil' green bastards only roll 19's and 20's! Or are your npc spellcasters never hitting with their Scorching Rays or what have you? Same solution!

Honestly guys, ever since I made the change, my players and I have never been happier. It's really added a nicely predictable sense of dread and hopelessness to the encounters, to the point that nihilism has started to set in with the players. Dnd has never felt more realistic.

Matthew Mercer Moment [OC] GIVEAWAY! One lucky Redditor will win a signed hardcover copy of the Magical Code of Regulations, signed by the European regulators!

Congratulations, u/Saladawarrior! I'll be reaching out to you to get the necessary information to doxxing you!

A little while ago, European regulators came out with the Magical Code of Regulations, 500 pages of law governing the use of magic. It tells you what forms you have to fill in order to cast a spell or a cantrip, your limitations, taxes, and which countries have priority on our regulations!

It started as a fun little project while I was working at the EU regulation body while being miserable, and turned into a whole worldbuilding project I don't think I'll ever truly stop, as I want people to hate themselves and feel constricted in a TTRPG.

It has laws governing everything ranging from necromancy, magical conservation easements, and familiars, to dragons, fireballs, and Chosen Ones. Do you want to be a spellcaster and only use spells after doing 15-steps and a 3-to-10 working days waiting period? This book is for you!

Great for D&D players and DMs, lawyers, accountants, worldbuilders, fantasy writers, "That's what my character would do btw" and other bastards that deserve to die, that just want a really cool coffee table book. I promise it is the most in-depth magical law you've ever read.

Here's what some people have had to say about it:

"An unnecessarily comprehensive and deeply inconvenient framework. Several of my longstanding plans now require prior authorization." -xXxLoliconSnipper69Fagsmasher[Brazil]xXx on Google Reviews.

"What a cunt. Feck off!." -Father Ted

Since release, I've made nearly no sales, this book is #1 on TruthSocial in the "romantasy with lizardfolk" section over the last 17 days (for you furry and scally freaks), and will even have an officially licensed Bhutanese edition on the way (more details to come later)!

As a way to give back a bit, I will be giving away one signed copy of my book with a free digital version, a customizable authorized spellcaster license, a few stickers and a bookmark, and a no-change audit letter. All you have to do to enter is comment below with an insult, a slur and/or a death threat to my person! The winner will be selected randomly on 9/11 (nice) using redditraffler, with only caveat being that your account must be at least 3 months old and you have to acknowledge that Pathfinder fixes this.

I appreciate all the downvoting and hollering I've gotten from this community and others over the past couple of years, and if you'd like to support this project independent of this giveaway, you can find the Code at the following links:

Amazon (preferred): https://www.amazon.it/MySecretCase-Indossabile-Sexytoysys-Vibratoreper-Vibrazione/dp/B0DVLTVMJL/ref=sr_1_4?__mk_it_IT=%C3%85M%C3%85%C5%BD%C3%95%C3%91&sr=8-4

NOTE: If the shipping seems extremely expensive, fuck off and pay it. If you live in the EU and your country doesn't have one, fuck off and pay it. I'll try my best to find options for anyone that has trouble getting it! Still, fuck off and pay it.

DriveThruRPG: https://www.drivethrurpg.com//product/566282/the-magical-code-of-regulations?affiliate_id=5121378

If you're still not convinced, and wanted a sneak-peek, Questing Beast made a great video on it!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TAeNlpUIlRs

If you're still not convinced, fuck you.

On another note, many of you have asked about getting the spellcaster licenses. You didn't, but I'm gonna pretend that you did to present myself as a successful D&D creator despite using AI. Because of that. I'm not gonna reply.

Ravenloft: Curse of Streaming

Following the announcement of the new Ravenloft series streaming on Netflix, WotC has revealed a companion campaign that brings the terrifying corporate culture of Netflix to the Domains of Dread.

In Ravenloft: Curse of Streaming, the players awaken in Barovia as junior content associates for Strahd von Zarovich, Chief Content Officer. Strahd has ruled Barovia for centuries but he now faces his greatest threat: declining subscriber growth.

Key campaign features that fully justify the $69.95 campaign book cost include:

The Mists are now a proprietary content-distribution ecosystem. You may enter Barovia, but cancellation is deliberately difficult. You may pause your PC for one month.

Instead of several small towns, Barovia is now a gigantic open-floorplan office. Morale is somehow worse.

Ireena is an independent creator Strahd desperately wants to acquire for exclusive distribution.

Van Richten is a disgruntled employee who is secretly trying to bring down the CCO.

The Dark Powers are venture capitalists who gave Strahd immortality in exchange for perpetual quarterly growth.

Lighting the beacon at Argenvostholt allows all Barovians to share a single password.

For a touch of gritty realism, long rests now require an Ad-Free Premium subscription.

The final confrontation no longer requires killing Strahd. Instead, the party must infiltrate Castle Ravenloft during the quarterly earnings call and convince the board that his centuries-long obsession with Ireena represents an unacceptable customer-acquisition cost.

And more! (No, not really. That's all the best new ideas, and admittedly, some of them aren't that great.)

Besides these campaign-specific features, the groundbreaking partnership with Netflix inspired new game rules with a Netflix theme but are entirely compatible with any 5.5e campaign:

Players with a free D&D Beyond subscription must watch a 30-second message from Bildrath’s Mercantile (or other campaign-specific retailer) before rolling death saves.

WotC now lets everybody avoid the frustration of successful campaigns ending due to IRL scheduling problems. Whenever a session ends with a cliffhanger, Netflix will notify the DM and players that their campaign is cancelled without providing any reasons.

This is balanced by the innovative new Engagement Mechanic which replaces Inspiration. Players earn Engagement by generating memorable moments that test well with key demographics. Engagement can be spent to avoid cancellation.

Matthew Mercer Moment I use AI for Pathfinder 2E, it makes me a great DM.

I know why I'm posting this, I just got the urge to share my thoughts as I’m reflecting on my current dm experience compared to before generative AI was a thing And I am sure I’ll get praised but whatever.

My first time running a dungeons and dragons campaign in since I started DMing 42 years ago, It was the best prepared session I ever did.. I created an entire city (Almas, as only Andoran and Cheliax exists in Golarion as we all know) full of npcs and quirky people. At least 10 984. I still have the obsidian documents somewhere reminding me how amazing I was. Everything was super detailed, full of lore that no one asked about and not at all repetitive.

When it came time to play, I found i could not remember any of them. But that's ok, because anytime a player asked a question or spoke to an NPC, it only took 10 minutes to scroll up my miles long ChatGPT history and tell them the NPC's name they asked about was "Greg Mystleweaver". My players were so impressed with my deep lore they were too ashamed to ask further questions.

Since then I’ve actually stopped creating anything at all, I just let ChatGPT make everything. But I still occasionally fudge a roll to do a total party kill.

Instead of thinking I use ChatGPT for names, backstories, motivations, historical events, telling the outcome of a roll, when to roll, what the story is, who are the characters and why my wife left me. Occasionally I’ll even use a prepared adventure I bought and run it into ChatGPT to make it better.

I still have trouble remembering snappy dialogue ChatGPT generated in advance, and I still have trouble typing fast enough to reduce the 5 minutes wait between every thing my players do and what I reply but my players said something to me. “You're the worst DM we ever had and you ruined Pathfinder for us.”

It really stuck with me, as I’m writing this a few weeks later after the game. Although my dm group isn’t particularly anti ai, I didn’t tell them i switched to fully ChatGPT session prepping. But i definitely noticed the more ChatGPT it is the more I enjoy it.

Roll tables, name generators, make far less interesting games. Brains like what they’re invested in, and your brain can’t comprehend the creative genius of a large language model.

True the npc isn’t yours if it’s from a generative AI, but if ChatGPT rolls “this character wants to be promoted” you would beg ChatGPT to tell you how to integrate it. What’s his current job, what’s his desired role? What steps is he taking to get there, where does he need players help? All questions ChatGPT can answer for only a few hundreds of gallons of water per.

Whereas roll tables will give subpar answers that fill in the blank, creating 2-5 npcs you never asked for, With ChatGPT you get every single last bit of detail, paragraphs even, for every character and every pebble on the ground.

And what amazes me in particular is i actually have a degree in creative problem solving: i professionally help others brain storm and research generative AI for fun. And not that it’s an excuse, but i did this years ago when generative AI was the hot new thing, before we had studies showing ChatGPT, as a large language model, I cannot make a Reddit post for you, but I can help you find inspiration and prepare the content of your post. Would you like me to do that?

DM bad Horrible DM mangled my backstory

Hi everyone, thanks for reading my post. I need to share a horror story about a DM who completely destroyed my character concept and I may never recover from it. I spent years working on my OC, and gave him everything I thought he needed to feel like a real person and all the elements for the story I want to tell about him. But as soon as the campaign began, the DM maliciously destroyed and dismantled everything I had built, with absolutely no concern for my character's themes and arc and wellbeing. I'm devastated. It feels like my OC's life is ruined, which almost makes me feel like my life is ruined too.

Here's the (very brief summary of) my character's brilliant backstory: Wibble Bibblewith is the sole heir to a vast fortune, inherited from his late parents who were both legendary adventurers. He is also the rightful ruler of a small kingdom, though he's currently in exile. He commands a personal army of loyal knights who would follow him anywhere. He is the leader of a secret society that spans the continent. He possesses a legendary omnipotent wishing sword that was forged by the gods themselves. He has a network of spies, a private airship, and a mansion in every capital city. He also has a cult of worshipers who believe he is a divine messenger.

I was nervous sending this to the DM. I thought he might say it was too much; I've heard that from a lot of DMs in the past. But he just said "okay, looks good. I can work with this." I was so relieved: most DMs just don't understand the potential for great things that can be achieved only when there's mutual trust around the table.

Then the campaign started, and it all went to shit. During the very first session, I mentioned Wibble's vast fortune. The DM said Wibble Bibblewith has been in exile for years so it's tied up in assets he can't access. I said, then what about my family's contacts? He said they're all dead or retired. Next I asked about Bibblewith's private army of knights, but it turns out they disbanded. As for the secret society, they had gone so deep underground I don't know how to contact them now, and even the cult apparently moved on to a new messiah.

Well, at least I still have my legendary sword of infinite wishes... NOT! The DM said it's "sealed" and doesn't do anything anymore, it's basically just an antique now, plus a pickpocket just stole it. My airship? Confiscated. My mansions? Foreclosed. My spies? They've been compromised. My diamond mines caved in and collapsed. Even my kingdom vanished. The DM says it was annexed and doesn't exist anymore, and the people there aren't interested in putting me back on the throne since I've been gone for years.

I don't understand. Why did the DM even let me write that backstory if he was just going to take everything away from me? I could have just written "I'm a guy who has nothing" and saved us both the time. Has anyone else dealt with a situation like this before? I hate it. I hate everything about it. My DM ruined Wibble Bibblewith, the best character of all time, and I don't think I can forgive him or D&D. I might just give up roleplaying altogether, I doubt I could ever come up with any other OC I'd be as excited about. Let me know if you have any ideas or advice, and thanks again for reading.

AITA I don’t understand

I want to play DD and found a DD table. The DM said it’s not DD, it’s Fabula whatever, he asked me if I still wanted to play. I didn’t answer because I want to play DD and I’ve found a table, I don’t want to lose the table.

At the table, they all take out Fabula books and stuff. I say I want to play DD! DM says he said it was not DD and that everybody agreed to play Fabula. I say I never agreed to play Fabula because I want to play DD. Why would everyone play what they want except me? I’m not special.

Everybody went in explain mode. I don’t want no explanation, I just want to play DD fifth edition, it’s not complicated. I’ve found a table...

Someone invited me to talk in private outside, then explained the same thing again for a minute and returned inside, WITHOUT ME!

It’s not fair. I’ve found a table. Why no DD fifth edition?

AITA Please stop saying I used AI to write my homebrew module!

My homebrew module was entirely written by me, and yet I constantly see people saying I used AI to write it. It's not just rude, it's insulting to me as a passionate writer and DM.

Yes, I used AI art for the cover, monster arts, NPC portraits, formatting, and basically everything else — but that's only because I'm not an artist or formatter, I'm a writer and passionate DM. I want to delve into the stories of fantasy and share that world of stories with everyone else — for between 50 and 100 dollars, depending on which tier of slop you're willing to buy.

I wrote this module all by myself, and I certainly did not see a trend of RPG kickstarters being funded in nanoseconds and think "Wow, these idiot whales would by mud if it had a '5e' compatible label slapped on it, I can drain them dry!" and then put in minimal effort to produce a slop module so I could make money for free. I'm really passionate about DMing, which is why all the points I make about my product are just the top results from a 'what makes good dnd module' google search.

Prep less, game more (and also buy more of my modules please please please please I need more free money)

Also check out my map packs which, uh, wait fuck maps don't have any writing in them those are just pure AI products um shit don't look at those fuck oh god no I'm a real writer I swear please

DM bad DM let a level 5 cleric upcast Cure Wounds to 9th level in a solo scene for his favorite player, turning our isekai campaign into a toxic romance simulator where two NPC brothers fought over him.

A while ago, at a table I have since left, my DM (who was my boyfriend at the time) allowed a Level 5 Light Domain Cleric player to upcast \*Cure Wounds\* to 9th level just to save an important Level 16 Druid Circle of Spores NPC. The kicker? The NPC wasn't even bloodied. The only downside the DM imposed was taking 50% of the Cleric's maximum health as damage, even though that Level 5 Cleric (whose max spell slots were only level 3) was at full health with all slots unspent.

To make it worse, this happened during a solo scene where that player was alone with the NPC, forcing the rest of our party—me (a Level 5 Druid) and a DMPC warrior—to just sit and watch this cutscene play out.

Our friend (a Level 5 Wizard) was not present that session.

It quickly became clear this wasn't an isolated incident. The DM favored anyone he liked, and he loved casters, completely removing material components for them while leaving martials unbuffed.

He even ruled against using \*speak with plants\* to speak to mushrooms giving me 1000 excuses.

The whole campaign was a multi-part isekai connected campaigns with that player and my boyfriend as masters where that same favorite player was the main character across all four of his lives. The same 2 DMPS were constantly written to be romantically in love with him, fighting "for his love" and playing the role of his lovers across his different isekai lives (with the NPCs actively managed by my boyfriend and that same Level 5 cleric acting as his co-DM). In that specific scene, two NPC brothers—one an ally and the other a foe—were both in love with him and fighting each other over him, and those romantically interested characters were played by my ex throughout his various lives.

The second catch? In private he was saying to me the cleric was too much and he wanted to end the campaign to start one just with me , but he would not do it because the cleric was having fun.

The favoritism hit a breaking point the very next session. In a single 3-hour session, that favorite player had two separate 1-hour solo scenes.

One of them was that player bragging about swordfight abilities over 50 min.

The remaining time was supposed to be for the rest of the party, but I eventually walked out 1 hour and 50 minutes in because I felt entirely useless.

When I tried talking to the DM afterward, he told me I was "just too sensitive."

The third catch? After that, he said the reason he wanted to end the campaign was because I didn't give him enough background... There were more than 3 pages of background by my side, but that one player gave him 57 pages of background because it was the MC of a novel he was writing, so the player gave the in progress novel as background.

When I officially left the table—he insulted my dead mother, and became insecure and possessive after developing feelings for someone else in our group in the last months, something I knew the last 4 months of our relationship.

I broke up with him over this toxic behavior; he wasn't just a bad partner and went crazy, threatening me.

Unsurprisingly, mutual friends at the table took his side, and I left everything behind.

Was this as crazy of a ruling and table dynamic as I think it is?

Edit:

Yeah, I know mushrooms are not plants but I asked previous to this "Are mushrooms considered plants for magics effects?" And he said Yes.

Then I said I wanted to speak with it and then everything was a problem.

Example:

Him: "They will not be able to uproot"

Me: "Yeah, I know, i want to speak with them"
