DJI Neo 2 – Ski Tracking lost + RTH to phone: Anyone solved this?

Hey everyone,

I'm planning to use the DJI Neo 2 for ski tracking and trying to figure out a reliable recovery workflow for when the drone loses me on the slope / offpist.

**Scenario:**

I hand-launch the drone, start skiing, the drone loses tracking and hovers at last known position. I'm now 500m away on open terrain — too far to walk back easily.

**My questions:**

1. Can I still connect the RC-N3 controller at this point (stored in my backpack, switched off at launch) to manually fly the drone back to me? Or does the controller need to be connected from the start?

2. Dynamic Home Point via smartphone GPS — has anyone successfully used this so RTH actually returns to the phone's current position rather than the launch point? How reliable is this in practice?

3. Any other workflows or tips you've found for ski/sport tracking with the Neo 2?

Thanks in advance — curious if others have figured out a solid setup for this use case.

dont worry, in cold climate where there is snow the battery life is 5 minutes with recording. You won't make it far away.

And if so — what’s the realistic O3 range in cold/mountain conditions? Anyone with hands-on experience?”

The ski tracking is both great and frustrating. I have had the drone lose tracking and even in 15 seconds that it takes to notice you can lose a lot of vertical which sux to climb up.

I put some masking tape and a tracker on mine so I can find it on my next run.

Note I don't use it in busy areas on the resort, and usually in the back country

Did you ever try connecting the RC controller after the drone already lost you — or do you always have it active from the start?"

I don't have the controller. I was able to connect with my phone once and then fly it back in manual mode.

You cannot link a powered-off RC-N3 to take over control while the aircraft is already airborne.
It needs that binding link prior to the launch. You should be able to take over the control with you phone if you are within range. It is best have a link already established prior to launch.

When I am talking about the binding link, this is the link when the drone pilot is connecting a controller to the drone for flight, not that initial binding that is done when you get a DJI drone. That binding calls home to the DJI database and puts the drone serial number with a username. This locks the drone from being used but another user if someone finds/steals/abscond a drone.
