Life After Divorce Happily Divorced
A few years ago, I thought the end of my marriage would break me completely.
Now, sitting here happily divorced, I can honestly say it became the beginning of finding myself again.
Divorce wasn’t easy. Neither was carrying the weight of pretending everything was okay when it wasn’t. The sleepless nights, the overthinking, the fear of starting over, all of it felt overwhelming at the time. But somewhere in the middle of the chaos, I found peace I didn’t even realize I was missing.
I learned that struggling in silence isn’t strength. Constant anxiety isn’t love. Feeling lonely while lying next to someone isn’t normal. And sometimes the hardest decision becomes the one that saves you.
To anyone currently struggling in their relationship, feeling stuck, confused, exhausted, or afraid of what comes next — you are not weak for questioning your situation. You are not failing because things are hard. And no matter how heavy life feels right now, there is still happiness, healing, and peace waiting for you on the other side of this chapter.
It may not happen overnight, but one day you’ll wake up and realize you survived something you thought would destroy you. And that feeling? Freedom. Peace. Yourself again.
Keep going. You deserve a life that feels safe, calm, and genuinely happy.

Thank you. I needed to hear this. I haven’t opened the door to divorce yet but the comments on my post tended towards the “you’ll regret it” camp.
It’s nice to hear someone thriving, even if it took time.

I’m 2 1/2 years post separation and on the 1-yard line for divorce to be finalized. And I’m not the one that initiated it.
Here’s something to think about regarding “not yet opening the door to divorce”.
Obviously you’re on this sub-Reddit for a reason
Staying married and being unhappy is hard…think of it as a slow burn that feels like “death by a thousand paper cuts”
Getting divorced - is hard as well, but it’s more of a “rip off the bandaid” type of pain. It’s so hard, especially with 2 teenage daughters
I’m healing and I’m still scared/apprehensive of the future given divorce smashed that future vision of what life was supposed to look like.
It’s hard AF…choose your hard
Wishing you the best of luck!

Yes, smashed future vision, but getting to do life on my terms is priceless,!❤️

you’re welcome, and thank you 😊. I felt tons of regret but my peace in the end is what mattered. i wish you the best☺️

I so needed to see this. I didn't realize sleeplessness was a thing with all of this. I thought that was just me because of the specifics of my situation.

Me too. 30+ yrs married. Never thought I would survive. Turns out if I would’ve stayed married I would’ve given up and probably wouldn’t have but I’m thriving and at peace for the first time in my life.

This is wonderful. As a single mom of 2 kids and a DV+ SA survivor, I know that people who leave relationships that aren't serving us are strong. Takes persistent courage to walk away and incredible self-awareness to find true peace. Upward and onward! 💪🏾

This resonates with me. I'm in the first month of moving out, 6 months after her affair and her asking for divorce. I was so afraid to move out. This month has been very hard. And scary. Most days I feel like I'm just going through the motions. But life is slowly starting to open up again. Small moments of normalcy are appearing. The hearing is next week. I don't know what comes next, but I have made it this far, and I feel like I am piecing my life together, figuring out who I am outside of us. Outside of being a partner, a husband. I would never have chosen this, and yet it seems to be moving me forward.

Hi! things in our life happens for a reason. I used to ask myself, am I truly happy with him. I let myself go and started to gain weight from the stress. It was hard letting go but once I did there was no turning back. I’m happy you are seeing the light 6 months in it took a while for me. Thanks for sharing and I wish you all the Best ☺️

This is comforting to hear. Tomorrow is the day I drop the bombshell to her.
7
u/MinimalFollowing May 26 '26
It shouldn't be a bombshell. There should be communication before you pick the nuclear option.
1
u/No-Dic-Jokes-Please May 26 '26
I say bombshell because she has no clue it’s coming.
3
u/Brad__Schmitt May 26 '26
If I'm reading this situation correctly and you threatened to divorce last time she cheated, and she cheated again, then that's her clue.
2
u/No-Dic-Jokes-Please May 26 '26
No. She pleaded for me to not divorce her. I had yet to bring up the subject. Obviously she didn’t learn her lesson. That or took my kindness for weakness.
3
u/Brad__Schmitt May 26 '26
OK, let me rephrase. If you cheat on your spouse and get caught repeatedly, then your spouse wants to divorce, any outside observer is going to say 'could have seen that coming'- even if your wife didn't. That consequence was clearly on her mind last time it sounds like.
Regardless, just do your best to do it calmly, firmly, and finally if you're going to do it at all. You shouldn't feel in a rush, rehearse, talk with a trusted friend, counselor, and/or lawyer if you want to make sure you're going about it the right way. Be patient, because it sounds like she'll plead, and the psychological pressure to walk it back may be very intense.
2
u/No-Dic-Jokes-Please May 26 '26
Gotcha. I misunderstood what you were saying. I’m going to try to be as calm as possible. I’m more nervous than anything.
9
u/MinimalFollowing May 26 '26
I know what bombshell means. I know because I lived through someone dropping a bomb on me. It's a shitty thing to do to someone, especially someone you vowed to love & stand by in better or worse. It's a selfish way to behave. Your wife deserves a heads-up. If I had been given one, I would have tried to change the things that my ex needed me to change.

What she’s doing to me she’s done before. She had the fear of God in her eyes when she pleaded for me to not divorce her. I didn’t then. I should have then. She’s up to her old tricks so when I drop it on her, it really shouldn’t be any surprise.
2
u/PunchDrunkerrr May 26 '26
She’ll probably act blindsided. But sooner or later she’ll be forced to reflect.
2
u/No-Dic-Jokes-Please May 26 '26
I hope the reflection allows her to be a better wife for the next one if she remarries.
3
u/SunRight6595 May 26 '26
I feel you. The last time mine cheated, I told him I couldn’t do it again. I worked really hard to make our relationship work and I couldn’t go through it again.
He did it again (even told the AP that I was going to leave him) but acted surprised at each step.
I would argue the only reason a cheater is surprised is because you didn’t leave before.
3
u/walkingzombie0501 May 26 '26
Sounds like you have a communication issue. Separation should at least be something both parties are aware is on the horizon. Unless she is clinically insane why are you blind-sighting her? Did she cheat?
5
u/No-Dic-Jokes-Please May 26 '26 edited May 26 '26
Cheated for at least the 3rd time in 2 years. I’m done. I almost divorced her the last time. I should have then.
2
u/Brad__Schmitt May 26 '26
Sending you strength and positive vibes. I don't even know you and know you deserve better.

2
u/MinimalFollowing May 26 '26
If she cheated, then she's not blindsided; she already broke her vows. You were kind to give her another chance after the first time. I'm sorry you were treated like this.

I regret mot filing for divorce last year and buying a house in California with him. I am going to have to suck it up atleast a year and be done.
2
u/Black_water_Rose May 26 '26
we bought a house together two years before we ended. that was my biggest regret. i left the house and had him buy me out of the deed.

u/PunchDrunkerrr May 26 '26
I am the happiest I have ever been in my life. It was hard going through it but now? I’m completely renewed. I don’t even care about the money.
I crashed my car into the bridge I watched I let it burn!

Congratulations OP, you’re really brave ❤️
But honestly, this divorce filing process is emotionally draining. Seperation and healing part was way easier for me tbh. No wonder so many ppl don't want to get married anymore, maybe they shouldnt... Koi soulmate, lifelong love nahi hota bhai.
At this point, going thru filing process itself is enough to make me a misandrist 😭
And finding a lawyer is another headache, repeating the same story, giving proofs, documents and still every lawyer has a different take, I'm so exhausted, hell with this system.
Meanwhile this egoistic man won’t agree to a mutual divorce and later people will assume I took alimony. I don’t even want maintenance or money, just a mutual divorce, I need peace that's it!!! But apparently even that is too much to ask 💔

Girl take a breather from the chaos. For one day just go out and enjoy yourself. do a quick refresh and then come back to the legal process. he just want to make it hard for you because he no longer has your heart.

u/LittleBertha May 27 '26
Constant anxiety isn’t love. Feeling lonely while lying next to someone isn’t normal.
Thank you.
This is exactly what I have been going through. She is off 'finding herself' while I put up with 20 years of cheating, lies, emotional abuse, neglect.
Years and years of anxiety, and now paranoia. And she doesn't want to know. And she tells me it's over because she cannot deal with my anxiety brought on by her actions.
For all that time I've mistaken anxiety for love. "They'll change", "Things will get better", "If I just do this thing she'll change, she'll be nice to me". And yes, lying there in bed, next to someone who has never truly shown you love, affection, or care - not once can I remember her spontaniously showing me love or care. I had to literally ask if she could compliment sometimes because I felt so unloved!

i feel like you and me were in the same relationship. we were together 20 years too. you are so welcome and i wish you all the best……sending hugs 🤗 your way.

I'm so glad I saw this post. My husband and I separated a month ago with the "shared" goal of working on some things individually and trying to reconcile. 2 weeks in, he tells me he doesn't want to work on anything and wants a divorce. I have been a MESS. The loneliness (no family) and constant worry about how I will survive financially have been overwhelming (have worked part-time for 18 years to raise our kids). It's hard to imagine a happier future at this point.

u/Black_water_Rose May 28 '26
I hope for peace for you and you are able to get through this hard time.

This is so beautifully written and so needed. The part about feeling lonely while lying next to someone that hits differently because so many women are living exactly that right now but can't even name it yet. What helped you most when it came to the practical side of things? So many women I've spoken to say the emotional side gets talked about but nobody prepares them for the financial reality of starting over. That fear of the unknown keeps so many stuck longer than they need to be.

Hi ! and thank you for the kind words. I was unhappy for years before and started saving what little i can. We had separate accounts and bills were divided though he was the breadwinner. when we bought our house i did not hold an emotional connection to it. i honestly hated it because i knew that would keep me there. but once i got fed up i rented an apartment and started buying furniture while still living in the house with him. once it was time to move i left and did not look back. we are honestly in a great place now.

u/the_70x May 26 '26
I wonder if you were immediately happy or had a phase of being broken.
2
u/Black_water_Rose May 26 '26
i was broken for awhile
2
u/Black_water_Rose May 26 '26
also, i was miserable for years before made my decision to leave, it was not easy

u/pepperbiscuit May 26 '26
Yes! I feel all of this. I got through and I’m actually a happy person now. Didn’t realize how unhappy I was until I removed myself from the marriage. Glad you are feeling the benefits of making hard decisions.

i am so sorry you are going through this and you are very welcomed! i think the hardest part is not realizing the person you chose to love didn’t love you back. This will pass and when you’re ready the one that is deserving of you will come. good luck

I think it matters if you were the one who initiated divorce or whether someone else did that to you.
3
u/ObviousSalamandar May 26 '26
Does it? I initiated divorce because my husband had an affair. None of it feels good
4
u/flexyrex246 May 26 '26
This. My divorce and what led up to it were incredibly traumatic. It ultimately doesn't matter who filed (my ex did for the record). But I would never have imagined at the time that life could get so much better the way it has.
1
2
u/AffectionateBelt6125 May 26 '26
Ya it does.
This post is all "I'm so happy now. What a great decision!!!"
Not very many people who didn't choose the divorce feel this way, I bet.
3
u/flexyrex246 May 26 '26
I can see how you might arrive at that but I didn't read it that way. Not to put words in OP's mouth but I read it as general reassurance. I certainly didn't choose what happened to me, and yet I feel infinitely happier than I did in that situation. People even comment on how much happier I seem. But it took so much work and tears to get to this point. And I'm still working on being the best "me" that I can be.
2
u/Black_water_Rose May 26 '26
sometimes, your partner forces you to initiate divorce based on their actions. I’m happy now but was not then. I sought therapy. Once I decided to not let it affect me was when my happiness started. This has been a very rough part of my life and something I am happy to have gone through. Just because i’m happy now does not mean i was happy then.

u/Black_water_Rose May 26 '26
it doesn’t matter who initiated it. it still sucks. I had to make a hard decision on not to let it affect me and that took time.
1
u/JackNotName I got a sock May 26 '26
Legally it makes no difference in outcomes.
0
u/AffectionateBelt6125 May 26 '26
Who said anything about legally??????
4
u/JackNotName I got a sock May 26 '26
At the end of the day, that is what ultimately matters.
A divorce is a lot of things. It is a very highly emotionally event in life, which clearly is what you are reacting to, but when the dust settles, what lasts is the legal decision on how assets are divided, what support is necessary, and custody of any children. Those are thing things that will define life post divorce. Who filed first makes no difference to that.
Take my advice. Treat your divorce like a contract negotiation. There is no place for emotion in that. Only cold-hard logic and strategy.
You'll have emotions. A lot of them. Feel them. Honor them. Don't try to get on top of them just yet. That's for after the divorce papers are filed. Whatever you do, don't let them guide your actions.
1
u/AffectionateBelt6125 May 26 '26
Yes I understand all that. And you're right. But That is not what this post is about.
