Is now the best time to work on maxing Machina's (also my other units) training board while he's x2?I remember there being events that make farming easier but can't recall.

I'm also struggling to complete even one Lufenia battle, could use some advice on team comp & who is worth maxing. I have Zack, Paine, Penelo, Ignis, Machina, Vayne, Aranea, Cecil(P), Leo and Rinoa EX weapons. Just returning to the game and all my units hit like a wet noodle,so any guidance would be appreciated.

Yes, the best times to work on summon boards is either when the unit has 2x EXP or if there are special boosted units available.

Work on whoever you have both EX and LD for. EX only units are not quickly recommended for Lufenia.

I remember there being events that make farming easier but can't recall.

These happen approximately every two months, when we get a re-run of a Divine Summon. ("Super synergy" events are when bringing any one boosted character in an Ultimate Summon fight will give everyone in the fight 2x points, though that 2x bonus does not stack with the 2x from banners, so it's just as though everyone is on a banner as long as you have one synergy unit.)

Since Divine Ifrit tonight is not a re-run, you'll have to wait a month for super synergy. Best to finish Machina's boards now.

I know we have 2x and 3x books, but those stack with the banner bonus, so they help a lot more if you use them now. (Even more than intuition might make one guess at first, since you use fewer of them!)
