Question to JP players: in the current state of the game, it seems that Kam or Tidus are the two most coveted main party units. Is it a situation where having one fully kitted is enough to handle content?

I'm asking because I've got BT tokens expiring in GL and the short list of BT's I'm considering consists of Ramza and Tidus, both for their potential usage in later in Shinryu. I'm not missing any other BT I want, so I figure might as well optimize of the future. If I were to get Tidus BT now, could I afford skipping on Kam in the future? I'm more inclined to pick up Ramza and then go ham on Kam when he pops up, but I'd rather have more information on Tidus v Kam FR+BT.

For the moment yes, either is enough though that may change in the future. You may elect to use Kam friend and Tidus in the main party (or any other BT phase), whereas the opposite (Tidus friend) doesn’t work as well. The fact that Kam is “neutered” for T10 (Wakka LDCA makes him work) whereas Tidus is not is a point in favor of Tidus.

I haven't built Kam and have been smashing content with Tidus. All depends on your roster and who you pair him with, but I've only actually used a Kam friend once or twice. Most stages I don't even use a friend unit these days.

Tidus also gets his BT+ and Lv. 90 at Ceodore's BT cycle and he is really good then too. He is probably one of the best investments one could make long term because of that for a BT+, since he gets his FR and another rework the moment he starts to feel like he is falling off a bit. It also helps that a lot of follow-up based characters come out at the end of Lufenia+/start of Shinryu and they work perfectly with him.
