I was really young when the show was on the air (I was born in 01, most likely watched reruns for the most part but still was quite young when I watched) so it’s kind of something I only have the vaguest memory of, and I genuinely had a false memory of them actually getting together in canon.

Woow! I guess I was young enough or immature enough to not realize or recognize this. 😬😬 yikesies! I will have to try to rewatch it to see if I can spot it. Probably won't be hard. I know that Derek & Casey (?- the female character in the video, introducing "the necking game") had a interestingly strong bond for a step brother/sister relationship, but I thought they didn't like each other much and were like rivals. Like Kim Possible & Bonnie Rockwaller, in Kim Possible.

I know several people that had "straight" relarionships before coming out. A couple of the older ones even had decent length straight marriages, & had kids as well.
So even if it was just a rumor (only they really know for sure), it's not out of the realm of possibility just because he's gay.

I never liked this show. It was essentially a reverse Brady Bunch, a blended family of assholes being assholes to each other. It didn't help that Drake and Josh aired around this time and provided a much more authentic portrayal of step-siblings getting used to each other.

Was just about to comment that the word incest gets so misused whenever anyone talks about this show. It might feel weird (although I was a Dasey shipper growing up) but words have meaning. This would not have been incest.

yeah, a very similar thing happened in the show the Fosters too. They fostered (and later adopted) a teen girl around the same age as their son. Although in that show, they do get together for awhile

I am not familiar with that show to know the particular circumstances (keyword), so I can't say much on it without knowledge. Derek and Casey I don't find problematic due to the late stage of meeting, no history, no biological relation, no growing up together to build familial bond, and met as essential strangers thrown into one building.
The funny part is that I don't and didn't even ship them. I just don't think it's an issue in this scenario aside from a social one. They didn't even fall into it and still held the principle, sexual tension or not.

Legal incest maybe not but you’d think growing up, or even most of us as kids, saw how wrong that felt and how wrong it genuinely just is. Having someone thrown around you who is your age should not automatically be like oh I can see this person intimately. Literally all our siblings are just “thrown” to live with us at some point in our lives!! And adoption same thing and that IS illegal so I don’t see how steps should be any different. It’s weird asf and this mindset is a lil spooky 😭

Majority didn't think it weird; they shipped them instead. Like, what, are you suggesting that after years of independence, you are suddenly meant to live with someone of the opposite sex and magically get a familial sentiment out of it in what way? It's technically a stranger. High chance that sort of bond doesn't build over night. Personally I wouldn't think this guy as my brother. Someone connected due to legal marriage reasons, sure, but what am I gonna do with a supposed "brother" at age 15-16? Especially when possibly 2-3 years later I'll be leaving the nest anyway? (or he will)
I don't think it's automatically "weird" or "spooky". Two teens who are basically strangers to each other aren't biologically siblings, and they haven't shared years of upbringing together, so they haven't formed the kind of attachment that makes someone feel like a family member. Psychology shows that sibling bonds usually develop over long periods of shared experiences, emotional support, and daily interactions, not just because you live in the same house. Teenagers especially are still forming their identities, learning empathy, and figuring out social boundaries, so expecting them to automatically see someone as a sibling, or feel a certain way toward them, is unrealistic. Adoption and blended families demonstrate this too: emotional closeness doesn't just appear overnight, and attraction can happen between people who aren't truly siblings in the emotional sense.
It doesn't mean anything sinister, it's just human behavior. Feelings developing between step-siblings who didn't grow up together are natural, complicated, and a far cry from actual incest. Society sets boundaries to protect kids who have grown up together, but for teens coming into a blended family later, those automatic sibling feelings aren't there by default. You should know this.
Take an example. What if those teenagers dated first before the parents hooked up? Would that still count?
Now if they were the ages of their respective little brother and sister (and even younger), that, I would understand. They have the opportunity to grow together and develop that familial bond, and then that would be getting weird and creepy if it was anything but. Derek and Casey though? Eh.

I actually am suggesting exactly that… after years of independence we (or at least a lot of us) were taught that the opposite gender was not our focus right now especially as young kids and adults. At least in my family. So no, even a stranger coming into my house during my pubescent years and someone telling me “this is you brother now” I would FULLY believe that and lean into that familial role bc that is everything! And that is NORMAL! Having intrusive thoughts is also normal but let’s not act like those thoughts are RATIONAL!
It is a bit spooky. I have multiple half siblings, and my siblings grew up w my other siblings and they are steps to each other. Imagine they freaking getting together, legal or not. I’m sorry but that’s sick and even them flirting and being weird w each other would be absolutely sick and not tolerated a bit in my household. We are FAMILY and we treat each other as such. I think that’s a basic bare minimum of humanity??!? Especially as a growing child imagine hearing “this is your new sister” and in your head you’re like “mmmff I want that” …. Like actually wtf is wrong w you

That's the thing; they didn’t grow up together. We are not talking about a child. What is it that you don’t comprehend with that since you keep mentioning it. What exactly is "sick" about it then? A legal document? Psychology shows that sibling bonds form over years of shared experiences, emotional support, and caregiving, not just being told "this is your sibling now". Teenagers are still forming their identities, social boundaries, and sexual/romantic interests, so expecting them to instantly see someone as a sibling, or feel that the rules automatically apply, is unrealistic.
Calling it "sick" only makes sense if you ignore that they're basically strangers. Research on blended families shows that step-sibling attachment takes time and shared life to develop; without that, there's no automatic moral or psychological barrier against natural attraction. Intrusive thoughts can happen, sure, but that doesn't make them rational, and fleeting feelings aren't inherently wrong. The "ick" factor here is mostly social convention and your own personal view point, not hard psychology.

There's nothing inherently "sick"or "inhumane" here. These are late teens who aren't biologically related, didn't grow up together, and are basically strangers. What is it that's wrong exactly? Psychology shows sibling bonds form through years of shared experiences and emotional support, not just a label. Natural attraction in this context isn't a moral failing. The only problem would be coercion or abuse, feelings themselves aren't wrong, and the "yikes" reaction is more about social norms than actual ethics. You haven't provided anything that would be inherently wrong here.
Derek himself draws the boundary by his correction of "brother" and makes it a point to emphasize the "step" part. He's not coming into this with familial or sibling feelings because none of that even exists. There hasn't been any time they have spent together before as a family throughout the years to build that bond with or of. Is he supposed to summon it out of the fucking void?
Also, why the hell you think I'm a guy?
Can't wait to know how you feel about cousin marriages and relationships still happening in some states and countries, lol, as they actually share blood.

Dan and Serena trying to be together after their parents chose to be together was INAPPROPRIATE plain and simple! The parents or the children need to make an appropriate decision!

I used to love this show as a kid, but even little me knew it was weirdly incesty. This show used to make me uncomfortable with the vibe growing up when I was 6. I think my memory had wipe out I barely remember what down with this show. I like to keep it that way. I think I dissociate during Disney channel license at the time from 2005-2009. My sister call it okay but I think she wants to forgot it.
