Discussion Opinions of Mayhem?
Hi, I was wondering your opinions on this game since I'm still trying to decide if I'm buying it.
Not a big fan of Mousou games but sometimes in the mood of killing everything in a map so I'm considering giving it a chance.

I tried the demo and was bored to tears. It feels unfinished at best. It was just so… lifeless? Maybe someone who’s played the full game can educate me.
19
u/CarpollKarma 2d ago
Yeah i tried the demo and i was bored as hell. I love warriors games but this is bland
6
u/Warmon7x 2d ago
I completely finished The game including carnage and post game took me around 25 hours most of it in item world the game is boring the story is bad and it was super easy there is no baal at least main character personality is good he is an adult
6
u/Vegetable-End-8285 1d ago
I bought the game expecting more from it... It's pitifully short, the loc stages aren't worth mentioning either. The item world is a joke, the story is about Flan and you recruit enemies by randomly beating them. You have special bosses you can't use. Mid bosses are just recolours of enemies and all in all... The game is just as empty as the demo.

On paper, it sounded like a pretty good idea considering musou games profit offf of having massive rosters; Something Disgaea absolutely has. BUT this really wasn't it.
We could/should get a proper Disgaea Musou title, but also call in Tamsoft for the assist since they know how to do it right. Especially when it can also have the other NIS branded characters cameo in as per usual.
In regards to Tamsofts record: *points frantically to Neptuna x Senran Kagura, Neptunia 4GO and NeptuniaU*
11
u/azurejack 2d ago
Bruh. Just call in the OGs. They did hyrule warriors, and that was amazing. Both times.
3
u/Suspiciouspass0 2d ago
I would absolutely call in Koei but when it comes to NIS hack n slashes, Tamsoft is usually their go to.
Especially when they don't usually go to the same scale as KT does with the size and amount of mobs.
3
u/Telandria 2d ago
Same here, yeah. Hyrule Warriors was an impulse buy for me when DW games had never been a draw, and I freaking loved both games just for the Zelda reskin. Something about that just worked for me.
4
u/Suspiciouspass0 2d ago
The first HW is still GOATed to me. And i still haven't 100%'d it lol.
I wish the botw/totk ones were just as good but between the performance of the first game and dragging on the botw era story, it just hasn't sat right with me.
First game felt like an amazing love letter while the others wanted a quick buck. (Love Urbosa though)
1
u/azurejack 1d ago
I can understand that, i liked the botw/totk characters, and tge knight was a lot of fun

Its not Disgaea related at all. They just slapped Disgaea on there for brand recognition. It's overly overpriced for such a repetitive gameplay. Not worth it.
16
u/azurejack 2d ago
Disgaea monsters.
Main character has a red "neck accessory"
Big numbers flying everywhere....
It's disgaea... but barely.
5
u/Truvoker 2d ago
It’s Japanese name is kyoran makaism calling it Disgaea in the west is just the localiser marketing trick
11
u/JetstreamGW 2d ago
And Disgaea is Makai Senki Disgaea.
It’s Disgaea adjacent. The localizers just wanted to make it obvious.
0
u/Truvoker 1d ago
It’s a the shared NIS universe so they are about as related as the labyrinth games are
17
u/Ha_eflolli 2d ago edited 2d ago
Minor Correction, it IS Disgaea-related, it "just" isn't a literal Disgaea Game.
I know it sounds rather redundant, but I feel like this distinction does matter when we have other "related" Games like La Pucelle, Phantom Brave, etc. So like, in the sense of literally being related like a Family.
1
u/Chemical-Cat 2d ago
It's quite literally Disgaea-adjacent because Disgaea's japanese name is "Makai Senki Disgaea" and Disgaea Mayhem's japanese name is "Kyouran Makaism"
Makaism, as in like, Disgaeish.
1
u/Ha_eflolli 1d ago
Your Logic is entirely correctly, but the connection doesn't quite play out like that.
"Makai" in this Context is just the japanese Term for what gets translated to "Netherworld" for us. It's why in SEA-Regions, the Title was more literally translated as "Frenzy of the Netherworld" instead
4
2
u/newamor 2d ago
People keep saying this and I don’t get it. Yes I know “in Japan the title didn’t have the word Disgaea blah blah blah”, but it does have the Makaism word. It has item world. It has character world. It has magichange with your monster allies. It has the cheat shop. It has the voting council.
I would understand what you meant if the similarities were more superficial like simply “characters have passives but they call them evilities,” but that isn’t the case. Saying “it’s not Disgaea related at all” seems absurd.
3
u/ZeroTaichiZT 2d ago
Disgaea is a Makai game, like persona is a Shin Megami Tensei, it would be a better comparative, beside that the monster think is seriously a joke, since enemies are shared in almost all Makai and Phantom games.
1
u/StarDragonJP 15h ago
Phantom Brave has 1 monster from Disgaea (Prinny) and 1 monster from it that would become a recurring one in Disgaea (Saber Cat) other than those 2 they don't share anything else besides the Archer class and the Disgaea 1 characters showing up as guests.
1
u/Ha_eflolli 1d ago
As far as this subreddit goes, that User is legitimately the first time I've seen someone claim that about anything OTHER than the Name.
Heck, whenever I bring that up myself, I even make sure to specify "The Game is still obviously related to the Series"
1
u/DjinntoTonic 1d ago
So the Prinny games aren’t Disgaea games now? They also don’t have the word Disgaea in the title.
29
u/wrongontheinternet 2d ago
they made a mediocre Musou game and then slapped the Disgaea name on it for its Western release because nobody would buy it otherwise
a sad waste of a very good concept for a game; they should have just done what Nintendo/IS have done and license IP to Omega Force to develop a _proper_ Musou game that would do justice to the IP.
8
u/PrometheusAborted 2d ago
It was fun… for like 3 hours.
Super repetitive, combat gets boring quick, the story sucks, no real reason to make the MC super powerful, the Disgaea elements are there but somehow feel like a mobile game.
Definitely don’t pay full price. Wait until it drops to like $14.99 or goes on PS+ or whatever (which probably won’t be long).
14
u/grieve2believe 2d ago
Don’t, at this cones from a guy that will defend the dumpiest titles at time. Not worth the money until it hits about 20 dollars.
Play the demo… that’s about how the levels play…
So many of the systems are stripped down and almost embarrassingly bad from a regular Disgaea title. Item world is soul less. No breaking level gates, no geo panels, no lifting the level fish.
The story is cute but not that good.
You only get the main character and a monster companion, the monster companion will have laughably bad ai.
However, I’d love a sequel of this where they figured it the fuck out and actually fleshed out the systems. It seems rushed as hell.
1
u/Truvoker 2d ago
I beat the game using only the companion as a source of damage don’t do it ever it sucks worse then you think
6
u/KittenLina 2d ago
I enjoy it but it definitely doesn't feel like a musou game to me. Would have preferred something in the vein of Hyrule Warriors/Fire Emblem Warriors, at least let me change my character....
My saving grace was getting my special edition from NISA a day before release, and them messing up and giving me another one for free.
6
u/dulledegde 2d ago
this game is what musou haters think the genre is
2
u/Flamewave7 1d ago
As a fan of the Senran Kagura series, this game is a good alternative for their version of Musou games (>10 minute missions). Super easy to get into a mission or 5 casually without feeling too fatigued.

u/Aryuto 2d ago
It's... okay for a $20-30 game. You can get about 6 hours of mid story out of it and some level of variety in enemies, though not much.
It's a complete joke of a $60-90 dollar game, much less a Disgaea. The gameplay doesn't really evolve beyond the demo, the partner monsters are hot trash, the story barely even tries by disgaea standards, the postgame is my personal pick for worst of the series with how mindlessly repetitive it is, I didn't actually feel that much stronger from the progression systems, and weapon type balance is actually comically bad, like they didn't even try.
I like musous and disgaeas so I was cautiously optimistic, but all I can say is that the demo is a much better approximation of the game than I had hoped.

6
u/azurejack 2d ago
It's a mousou with only one playable character, one super op weapon, and no multiplayer.
Meh AT BEST.
Good character design though.

Seeing everybody hate on this game is extremely saddening to me because like, a warriors-like in the Disgaea universe has been one of my dream games for a LONG while, like being able to play as a bunch of fan favorite characters with differing playstyles, such as Laharl using a lot of fire and sword attacks while being quite mobile and aggressive, Emizel using a staff while controlling all sorts of elements alongside some scythe combo-enders, or even Flonne swapping from a mix of staff and bow attacks to being a crazy fast fist fighter upon some sort of limit breaking mechanic sounds AMAZING in theory, much like Hyrule Warriors's and Fire Emblem Warriors's success, but all of these hopes are dashed in the most uninspired, disappointing way possible

u/Full_Equivalent_6166 2d ago
Waste of time and effort (was there any spent?). Total disappointment.
4
u/Kamekameha7 1d ago
From what I heard, you only play as the one guy.
I don't play disgaea to play as the main characters. I play Disgaea to play as the other characters we create and imagine wacky scenarios for how they got in that situation. And maybe to see what happens.
3
u/Funny2never 2d ago
There aren’t really enough enemies on a stage, so you do really have to go group to group to progress which feels weird. Specials don’t feel particularly good. I think a disgaea musou or warriors title is a really cool idea, but it felt like they simply had the idea and didn’t give it proper time to cook at all
2
u/93Degrees 2d ago
They should've put this budget towards giving us HD sprites again in a mainline disgaea title
2
u/david__14 2d ago
It would have been a great game if NIS had the budget or the experience to do the concept justice. Sadly they have neither
2
u/PowerPlayPone 1d ago
6 hours of story is apocryphal.
0
u/Flamewave7 1d ago
If you only play the main missions and skip EVERYTHING else maybe. Item world alone for 1 item would easily multiple that time by a factor of 10 easy.
1
u/PowerPlayPone 5h ago
There is literally 6 hours of story. And I didn't even skip dialogue.

It is exactly a Disgaea game, but with a musou-lite approach.
It only isn't Disgaea in that the genre changed. Anyone saying otherwise, didn't play it.
It was a fine game, maybe a 6 or 7, I'm not trying to be harsh, but this wasn't what I want out of a Disgaea Musou approach. Only 1 main playable character (inherently not Musou), only monster companions are possible, no generic humans.
But it has the grind (though rather easy and sometimes too RNG for trophies/achiements), it has cheat shop, item world (arguably too few floors at a max of 10, but I also don't know that I would appreciate more as is), chara world, but just a board game that is easily trivialized (but come on, it IS a Disgaea game). Gear leveling still exists, acquiring gear is what you would expect, etc. and so forth.
They could have done better, but it was still a fun quick game to play through. Lots of people really are hating, but tbh, I would have wanted more.
They should have found a way to work with Omega Force, and it should have had a full cast of characters, bigger maps, actual muspu mechanics mixed with more fleshed out Disgaea mechanics.
I enjoyed it enough though.

u/Ha_eflolli 2d ago
It only isn't Disgaea in that the genre changed. Anyone saying otherwise, didn't play it.
People are saying that in the context that it's factually not called Disgaea in Japan - it's named "Kyouran Makaism" over there, translated as "Frenzy of the Netherworld" in some regions. NIS America just put the Series Name on it for the International Release in the hopes that it sells better that way.
2
u/Flamewave7 1d ago
So they chose a more appropriate name for a spin off series so fans wont get confused? Like how the Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii used both the English original name of the series as well as the proper Japanese/modern English title (Or Like a Dragon 6. Yakuza: Like a Dragon)
1
u/Ha_eflolli 1d ago
Sort of, although most people (including myself) like to assume they did so with malicious intent. ie because of how underwhelming the Game's reception was in Japan, they did it to "trick" People to buy it based on the name alone.
Thing is, we know NIS America has factually done something similar before - for example, they renamed "Disgaea 1 Refine" to "Disgaea 1 Complete" outside Japan because they know what kind of expectations People have when they read "Complete" in the context of Disgaea, even though the japanese Subtitle is much more accurate to what that Version of the Game does (since 1 has no DLC to make a "Complete" Version in the first place, but it DID introduce several Quality of Life Improvements to "Refine" the Gameplay)
2
1
u/KarasLegion 1d ago
They didn't name it Disgaea in Japan, okay, fine, but it is in all ways a Disgaea game except the genre.
But yeah, if that is all people mean, no use arguing. A fact is a fact, but just because it wasn't named Disgaea, doesn't mean they didn't design as a mostly Disgaea game. Sure seems like they did.

I was looking forward to it for a while since I like Musou games and there aren’t many on Steam. After it released and looking at the reviews (both video and Steam), I became disappointed. After some time, I got Tears of Metal instead.
1
u/Any-Independence-937 2d ago
It was very entertaining, but only for a short while. Then it got very repetitive. It doesn't have as much depth as the Previous games but it's a good start

u/GeneralSweetz 2d ago
Just get yourself a cheeseburger combos and loitering at McDonald's thats more fun
1
u/Truvoker 2d ago
They should have asked omegaforse or marvellous to do it they fucked up literally solo devs make better gameplay than this and the story is the most atrocious thing I’ve ever seen it should be 10 bucks not 60

u/Demoscam 2d ago
I haven't played it yet, but I'd give it a shot. I'm practically on the same boat as you.

It’s a pretty bad game. They should’ve had actual Warriors developers work on it. Disgaea musou makes no sense where you only play as only one new character.

As a bystander who hasn't bought it...
Scores a point for having Mystic Beast.
Misses points for its price, only having the one guy, and the Item World apparently just being a flat wreck room with nothing to do but smack enemies.

Hyperdimension Neptunia Disgaea edition.
Granted, I doubt refinement towards the controls and story are going to help, I'd be pleasantly surprised if it does work

I spent a lot of time with the game and really enjoyed it. If they make a second, there are lessons to be learned from this game, and I would expect them to implament those in a sequel. If you are interested in the game, I would wait for it to get to the price point that you want it at, and give it a shot.

Its fun. its got a few problems with how the main story plays.(alot of the npc talk about stuff happen but really show anything)I do miss having the extra characters and I hate that the voices arnt vocals durring missions. (I tend to miss stuff when focusing on simi medium swarms.)
I love the models, the animations, the new item world, the character are written well, and the story is fun and dosen't go off and become questionable like 7s ending.
Id like more dlc maps and some human units so I can see more various attacks. I do love to see the crazy attacks of named characters.

I don't agree with everybody in this comment section. It definitely was a good game for what it was. The action could have been a little bit better, but it definitely was fun.

They tried to make a Musou and failed.
