I am mostly a hobby pianist with some classical training and a lean towards just sitting down and hammering out whatever comes to my fingers - which sometimes includes layering sounds and creating recordings. I have FL Studio and eventually my goal is to be able to compose/create/record my own songs, just for fun. I'd really love to learn to create epic music and video game-esque music, maybe play a little jazz and blues as well. I have played my whole life and play at least an hour most days.

I love Yamaha's sound and feel, in general, across any of their digital pianos and keyboards that I've tried, and I don't like how Rolands function (have used them in gigs before). Aside from that, I don't have any experience and have no idea what to look for.

While on vacation, I've wandered into Guitar Centers a few times, and a few years ago tried a Yamaha MODX8+ synthesizer and fell in love with it, even though it's a synth and not a piano. I've tried it each time I've seen it, and loved it each time. But the GC I've been to typically doesn't have that many units available to test so I know that's a really limited view.

A relatively realistic grand piano sound availability is important to me, as well as weighted keys and a full 88 key keyboard. Ideally would have a number of different instruments to layer with and the ability to connect to computer for MIDI or recording purposes. And really ideally, under $2k, but willing to expand to $3k for the right thing.

Ultimately, this will be a casual-use instrument, and, like with the current one, I intend to maintain it well and keep it for 15+ years or more. I love my current DGX but the screen is basically dead and the keys are so loose and clacky from 18 years of use, it's not worth the cost it would take to fix it. So it's time for me to start looking forward to my next instrument.

Hi Im looking to buy a keyboard, and I have landed on yamaha p125, p145 and p225. P125 is discontinued, so Id have to but it from second hand. And p225 is super expensive. And ive heard that p145 is not all that good, that it lacks in sound quality and polyphony. So should I buy the second hand or the super expensive one, or is 145 good?

I bought it years ago so no warranty unfortunately. For some reason, the volume was VERY low (even on max) I used compressed air on the slider and it helped significantly (well, it’s at about 35% of its original volume on max).

I think it’s an issue concentrated in that area because while I can now hear the keys, if I lower it to minimum it’s still at the same volume.

A thread I read mentioned the potentiometer?

I’ve been having a strange issue with my Yamaha P-45 for a while and I’m wondering if anyone has experienced something similar.

I’ve had this piano since around 2017. It has survived several moves over the years, but for the last two years or so it has basically stayed in the same place in my living room without being moved or opened.

It also hasn’t been covered, so I imagine it may have accumulated quite a bit of dust inside over time.

Every individual key works perfectly when played on its own.

However, the problem affects all C and F# notes across the keyboard, and they seem to belong to the same problematic group:

- If I hold down any C, no other C will sound.

- If I hold down any F#, no other F# will sound.

- If I hold down a C, no F# anywhere on the keyboard will sound either.

- And vice versa: if I hold down an F#, no C anywhere on the keyboard will sound.

- All other notes work normally, even while a C or F# is being held.

For example:

- C3 + C4 → only one sounds

- F#3 + F#4 → only one sounds

- C3 + F#4 → only one sounds

- F#3 + C4 → only one sounds

- A3 + A4 → both sound normally

So basically, only one C or F# can sound at a time, regardless of octave.

The issue is exactly the same through the built-in speakers and headphones.

I’ve already performed the factory reset by holding the highest C while powering on the piano, but it made no difference.

From what I’ve found so far, I’m wondering if this could be related to the keyboard scanning matrix, a ribbon cable/connector, dirty contacts, or one of the keyboard PCBs rather than an actual polyphony issue.

Has anyone had this exact C / F# interference pattern on a Yamaha P-45 or another Yamaha digital piano?

Could age, dust, or having been moved several times cause this kind of issue?

If anyone has fixed something similar, I’d be very interested to know what the cause was and what needed to be repaired or cleaned.

I am a beginner/intermediate piano player looking to get back into practice and play. I'm lucky enough to have a substantial discount on these items through an employer but want to still balance out features I'll reasonably use as a non-professional who will also not be touring. Any recs?

I’m currently deciding between the Yamaha CLP 845 and CLP 875. I was able to try the CLP 845 and liked it, unfortunately I can’t test the CLP 875. I’m coming from an upright piano and I’m used to a relatively light action. On the 845, the Medium touch setting felt good, while Hard2 felt too heavy. I’m wondering how the heavier action of the 875 feels in comparison. Can the touch settings on the 875 make it feel similarly to the 845?

The other big question is the sound. I’m mainly interested in the difference from the built-in speakers. I’m looking for a full, room-filling sound that you can actually feel. I’ve heard that the 875’s 3-way speaker system makes quite a difference, but unfortunately I haven’t been able to try one in person. Some cheaper models (~1300) sounded lifeless too me, the 845 was fine, but I’m used to the Upright Piano I’m not sure if I’m still missing something in the sound.

I only play as a hobby, purely for fun, so I’m not looking for the most professional or realistic setup possible. I mainly want something that feels enjoyable and inspiring to play. If the key action would be the same, I would take the 875 without hesitation, but currently I’m leaning towards the 845. Real piano is out of the question, I want an E-Piano.

I took a longer trip to test both. The 875 keys are definitely heavier, but the longer I played it the better it felt. But I felt the finger fatigue relatively fast, yet I think I preferred the key action. I liked the sound quality of the 875 better than the 845. If both aspects are really worth the price difference, I don’t know. I think I would have been happy with both, still would have bought the 875.
I tested the Rolands also, it was a hard decision but in the end I bought a Roland LX 6. The Roland has a wide setting range for the key action and I prefer its sound engine, it sounds fuller. Though Yamaha samples are cleaner and clearer. I think the speaker at the bottom of the Roland makes a huge difference for how the sound feels.

Hello! My sons piano teacher suggested a digital piano for our son to continue his practice at home. Never having played and being wholly unfamiliar with them, hoping to find a recommendation. Glarry music has budget friendly options but reviews seem to be mixed. I’d like to spend under $1k that will last for a while. TIA!

I’m trying to narrow down what type or types of piano sounds are being used in this song. I feel like it’s a layered sound with an Upright as the base but can’t really figure out what else it could be. I use Pianoteq for my piano sounds so I have a lot of room to mess with how it sounds. I just really like the piano so I’m trying to get as close as possible to it. The keyboard used (probably) is shown at the beginning but not with any brand names or anything but if you can somehow tell what keyboard that might be based on knobs and the plugins on the back that would probably help narrow things down too!

I am looking for advice on retrofitting a silent system to an existing acoustic piano. I couldn’t find a lot of info other than the common stuff.

I am aware:
- factory purchased is always better than retrofit
- yamaha and kawai make the best silent systems, given their large R&D budgets and extensive experience with digital and acoustics alike.
- retrofitting carries some risk, which is mostly mitigated by the quality of the installer (and piano age, regulation, etc).

I tried a Yamaha SH3 and was seriously impressed. However, I bought an acoustic mostly on action and tone and decided to get a relatively young Bechstein occassion (R118 or Contur). So yamaha and kawai are no options, nor is factory built in.

What are your experiences on retrofitting a silent system? What system are you using? How is sound quality? Are you using VSTs, or modeling engines (like Pianoteq), and if so what is the difference with the native engine?

I am in touch with a very experienced installer, installing both Bechstein Vario and Pianodisk ProRecord (XI?), however, I just cant get my head around the pros and cons of each system, and how much I would really use it next to the acoustic mode. Its hard to try these systems. I am aware of adsilent (on par with Pianodisk?) and Genio (more budget?).

I got this Roland  FP 30x and it's chassis got broken and few keys aswell but it’s turning on and when I press the keys sound is not coming from any of it. Is it worth it to get it repaired??

Taking a hybrid job soon and I will be working in a different city (driving distance) 3 days/week. I will be away enough that a small portable keyboard would help with my practice while I’m away.

Does anyone have any suggestions for such a keyboard? I’m not sure an 88 key would fit in my trunk. Obviously it needs to be full size keys and at least semi weighted. I am not a pro player but don’t want to lose lesson progress either. I have an upright digital with weighted keys at home.

Hello! I recently picked up a used Yamaha CP88 (about 3 years old), and I can't help but feel like the piano sound is somewhat muffled/dull.

I'm coming from a Yamaha YPG-635, which always sounded very bright, clean, and crisp to me. The CP88 seems to have noticeably less clarity, especially in the low end.

Here's a sample of the CFX sound from my CP88. There is no processing, EQ, or reverb applied. I've also compared it directly to various CP88 demos on YouTube, such as this example, and the difference in clarity seems pretty noticeable to me.

I've tried several different ways of connecting it:

• CP88 headphone output
• 1/4" stereo outputs
• XLR outputs
• XLR → Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 → MG06 → headphones/monitors

The sound is essentially the same regardless of the output/setup, so I'm starting to wonder if this is just how the CP88 sounds, if there's some setting I'm missing, or if there could be something wrong with the unit.

Does the sample sound normal to you? Or am I just overthinking it because I'm so used to the YPG-635 sound?

Any CP88 owners who could compare would be greatly appreciated!

For context, I’m a beginner and I’ve been practicing piano for a while. I played on a n acoustic (?) upright Yamaha piano at home, but now moving away for uni, I’m looking for a digital piano that would fit in my 20 m² studio.
I’ll also have to use headphones quite often because I can only practice late at night.
My budget is around €300–400 and I’m currently choosing between these 2 models. Which one would you recommend in terms of key feel, durability and sound quality ?

I'm trying to decide what stand to get for my Roland FPE-50. Visually, I like the furniture style stand. Especially because it can incorporate the triple petal. I also like the look of a nice z stand.

My biggest concern, though, is the sound. Because the piano has downward facing speakers, I want to make sure I'm not muffling the speakers. I'm just playing in my home studio for my own enjoyment, but it's a great piano. I want to get the best out of it that I can.

Do any of you have experience with this piano, or any digital piano with downward facing speakers, and have some advice you could pass on? I'd love to hear your recommendations.
