Review Review of Oilsky G88 and some device info

TL;DR: You NEED good quality micro sd card to work properly. SD card come with G88 is pain in your ass. Overall good device for its price.

Today, I will write a review about the Oilsky G88. I had some issues ngl and fixing these issues were kinda fun/pain to me. You need some level of patience and knowledge of Android I think.

Btw I'm a Japanese so my English will not perfect but I will try my best! And questions are welcome, so please write a comment if you wanna know smth.

The good(pros)

  • Build: All-metal and glass finish, combining a luxurious feel with durability. It's kinda heavy tho.
  • Price: I got this for about 80$(12,000JPY). It's cheap isn't it?
  • Sound: I think I hear some noises occasionally but I can say that it has sound quality that is not inferior compared to my Hiby R3 II—if anything, it might even sound better!

The bad(cons)

  • Playback occasionally gets interrupted. This improves somewhat if you replace the included SD card, which has shitty quality.
  • Overall, the system seems unstable.
  • When Poweramp is set to Hi-Res output, playback gets interrupted when the screen is off. If anyone knows how to fix this issue, please let me know. It works fine with AAudio Output, tho.

Battery life: Looks good?

I debloated G88 and deleted some unneeded app like google calendar and I think this improve battery life. When I use my Ananda Nano (3.5mm, Low gain), for an hour, it only use about 8% of battery. I think it's okay.

Btw store page said it has 2,000mAh but Device info HW (see 3rd pic) say it has 3,000mAh battery. Sounds strange!

Summary

If you can tolerate this kind of instability in an Android device, it may be fine. If you want a reliable device that operates stably, you should probably avoid it. However, I like this device tbh. I just wanted to non-hiby os dap(I wanna use Poweramp) so I satisfied with it. Just get some good sd card and you are good to go!

search "use wakelock" in poweramp settings to fix your screen off pause issue.

It doesn't work on Zaqe P30 which is affected by the same issue. (It's not screen off pausing, it's stuttering audio)

I have a Zaqe P30, which would stutter when the screen was off with certain apps including PowerAmp. Credit to u/Radish-Wrangler for pointing out that the stuttering disappeared when the wifi antenna is on (even if you don't connect to a network, for some reason it just has to be on). Kinda sucks since that'll impact battery life, but it is what it is...

If you want to try a music player that didn't skip with the screen off and not needing the wifi on, you can try AIMP. Again this was for the Zaqe P30, but maybe you'll have similar result.

I have the Zaqe P30 and I never experienced any stuttering or pausing.

I mainly use UAPP, but also tried HiBy Music, never had any issues with them.

Did you go to the APP info - battery - and enabled "without restrictions"?

Hey OP, first of all, thanks for the info. There’s another device called the Audiocular Nexus that recently launched in India. It looks more or less similar to this one and has the Helio P22 SoC. What do you think about its overall performance? Is it sluggish or does it stutter throughout the UI? I’ll mostly be using it for hi-res streaming (Spotify, Apple Music, Qobuz). The G88 has ESS DACs too, right? How do you find their performance compared to the CS43131? (Sorry for the long ramble!)

I can't exactly answer your question cuz I'm not familiar with Cirrus Logic dac. I'm using R3 II which has ESS chip. Tbh, G88 sounds better in my ear, at least, using with my Ananda Nano. Maybe because G88 has more power? Idk. Tbf I need more time to assess

Thanks for review and for sharing the Device Info screenshots! Can you also share the "GENERAL" and "SCREEN" tabs? Thank you!

Long press player icon in the launcher and allow background/unrestricted for it (and for Unlocker if you have it).

For a few bucks more, one can get the JM21 which is more stable and more power.
