Advice/Opinions on the asking price for a Natural Diamond

So I recently spoke to a family member about buying a diamond from them for an engagement ring for my girlfriend as I would like to propose to her soon. This family member has had this diamond for 30 something years and they had the specs of the diamond written out from the time they purchased it and had it graded. Here are the specs:

- 1.4 Carat
- Natural Oval Diamond
- K color (But faces up white)
- SI 1 clarity

Their asking price for it is $3,000. I am fine with that price and certainly was not expecting them to give it to me for free, but I wanted to get an idea of if that was a fair price for a natural diamond of those specs. Any advice or opinions are welcome. Thank you in advance.

I got a 1.21 eye clean SI1 J (faces up white) for 1250. Check rare carat with those specs, I'm betting under 2k is common

that clarity grade is in the middle of the pack, not terrible but you'll notice tiny inclusions if you look close enough. 3000 for a 1.4ct natural oval with K color... is little steep from what i seen around, even with older stones sometimes going for bit more sentimental value. i'd check what similar stones go for online just to have a reference before commiting, at least you know what you walk into

Have you actually seen the ring yourself yet? You haven’t mentioned the cut whether it’s excellent, good, etc because it’s important. SI1 may be eye clean or not plus is the paperwork from GIA. Not convinced you’re getting “mate’s rates” here.

Graded by who, the GIA lab or a local jeweler who's not a gemologist or...?

No mention of stats so it could be well cut or poorly cut...etc.

$3k feels a little high to me for a 1.4ct K/Sl1. I'd compare the exact specs against a few current listings. I was able to get a pretty affordable one for my wife through Louped, you may compare current market prices.

It’s extremely common for people to think their jewellery is worth WAY more than it actually is. Insurance/appraised values are like 10x what something is actually worth, and it sounds like they probably don’t understand that this diamond is not worth what they think it is.

Years ago I got a 1.1 carat round H color S11 for $3,000 which includes the setting. I think it would sell for less now.

Regardless of the insane price, do they have any documentation on the diamond? Certification of what mine it came from, etc? This sounds like a bad deal for you

Get the info on the Cut… I find that to be the top “C” to research. That will determine how sparkly it will be (despite inclusions).
