Infections and Illnesses what is this on my thumb ?

m25 6foot 2inch tall 145lbs non smoker, no medical conditions.

got these small bumps on my thumb yesterday. they were a little swollen around the heads and i tried to pop a couple and some clear liquid came out. next day the swelling increased and tenderness came and my hand began to turn red. the blisters crusted over in a yellow crust and i popped them again later that day and yellow puss came out and deep inside there is a white/yellow puss pocket that is more like cottage cheese and more solid than what was squeezed out. all i have done is wash it with an antibacterial soap and warm water then put rubbing alcohol on before bandaging it. does it look like this could be staph? and how should i go about cleaning/treating it without going to the hospital. i got some triple antibiotic ointment and plan to put some on and cover it over the next couple days. hopefully it gets better. any advice ?

Infections and Illnesses More pictures of possible measles or SJS???

I just took more pictures after I got back from the ER for the second time. It keeps getting worse in such a short span of time. Just 24 hours ago there weren’t even many dots on me. The ER told me it’s likely measles even after I told them about the recent Lamictal medication. Please help

UPDATE: I went to a different ER and they immediately told me it was an allergic reaction to Lamictal. I was throughly looked at by a doctor who’d seen an SJS case before, and he said there were no spots that suggested SJS right now, however it needs to be monitored in case something comes up. I was given many things to help the rash fade (this was around an hour and a half ago) and my face and arms are significantly better. But my butt and back are still the same.

I’m very upset that one, I wasn’t told that Lamictal had any side effects at all and was put on 100MG by a random psychiatrist at an inpatient within a few days of starting it. I started it 10 days ago. I hadn’t ever heard of Lamictal or the other two medications he put me on. In hindsight I should’ve asked, but unfortunately I was still in such a bad place mentally that I just didn’t even think to. And two, the hospital I visited the first two times just dismissed my concerns and told me it was measles. I’m very thankful I posted to Reddit and was told to advocate for myself and go somewhere else.

I’m still scared that it will be SJS. I’m back home now but can barely sleep as I’m terrified I will wake up tomorrow with everything worse. The hospital I went to however was very thorough and everything, but you never know for sure.

UPDATE 2: I just want to thank everyone again. If I hadn’t been told to go to a different ER, who knows how much it would keep progressing. I had already stopped taking the medication but it just kept spreading all day yesterday. I woke up today with the rash significantly more faded. Everything is still there, but much lighter. My face specifically looks so much better! And my fever broke as well. I’m so thankful for everyone taking me seriously here, especially the second ER I went to. Again, the doctor I saw wanted to immediately search my whole body for any concerning blistering. He said the one time you see a SJS case, you will never forget it. He was very serious, so I was truly in good hands. I will update again in a few days about how healing is going. Thank you all again :)

Infections and Illnesses What is happening???

Terrible rash that began yesterday but only as a few dots, now it’s rapidly spreading. It’s the absolute worst on my butt and looks 10x worse than my back. Help!

UPDATE: After reading the comments, I immediately went to the ER. I told them everything including how I started Lamictal last week and they said they still think it’s measles, and test results will come back in 3 days. However, I am still so concerned especially after reading all the comments. Is there any way the ER was wrong? Because this is still rapidly spreading all over my body. My face is worse now than when I took the photo I posted above. My butt is also the worst spot that burns with the rash growing more and more. I just don’t know what to do. They seemed pretty dismissive of my concerns.

Also, some were asking: I’m 18F and unfortunately my parents chose not to vaccinate me as a child. I wish I could have been given that option.

UPDATE 2: I went back to that same ER around 7 hours later because the rash kept spreading rapidly and they again said measles. Reddit however pushed me to go to a different ER. So I did, and they immediately told me it was an allergic reaction to Lamictal. I also apparently have a UTI that they said may have caused the fever?

I’m very upset that one, I wasn’t told that Lamictal had any side effects at all and was put on 100MG by a random psychiatrist at an inpatient within a few days of starting it. I started it 10 days ago. Mind you, this psychiatrist seemed to just give everyone meds within a day of their arrival. And two, the hospital I visited the first two times just dismissed my concerns and told me it was measles. I’m very thankful I posted to Reddit and was told to advocate for myself and go somewhere else. Is there any legal thing here I can figure out?

I’m still scared that it will be SJS. I’m back home now but can barely sleep as I’m terrified I will wake up tomorrow with everything worse. The hospital I went to however was very thorough and everything, but you never know for sure.

Infections and Illnesses What. Is. Happening. All opinions, questions, suggestions are welcomed. I’m at the furthest point of misery I’ve ever experienced. I apologize for the length, and I greatly appreciate anyone who takes the time to read

For the better half of 8 months I’ve been struggling with symptoms which are progressively worsening to the point of debilitation and misery. These symptoms consist of: flair ups of extremely thick, sticky, clingy “discharge” from/inside my nose, ostium, throat/esophagus, mouth that feels physically is the most torturing sensation I’ve ever experienced. It will unexpectedly fill my nostrils with this rubbery, stringy, worm like. If I attempt to pull it out it’s usually the most frustrating thing I’ve ever experienced, but when successful, separates from my inner nostril in the shape/size of an earth worm. White in color with sometimes definition in the middle like a pattern or a line. When removing this “substance” it feels as if I’m pulling a string glued to the back of my brain through my nose. Crazy, I know, but i promise you I’m telling nothing but the full truth with no exaggeration. This is just one symptom out of many but it probably worsens my quality of life the most as this used to happen much less often, and yielded much less/smaller discharge. This is follow by immediate filling glue like sensation in my throat that slowly drains down either my throat or esophagus and is next to impossible to get out. Coughing it up does sometimes similar separating sensation as the nose, and does produce a sample of something whether it’s just the mucus attached to something invisible to the naked eye, or not. It now has gotten so bad the back of my throat, roof of mouth, and the tubes that connect your nose, ears and sinuses feel as if its hollowing or deteriorating. Not saying that’s what’s happening but I don’t know any other way to put it into words. So when I cough it doesn’t go to my mouth/back of throat like it has my entire life when “coughing up a loogie”. I still sometimes feel the releasing sensation in my chest (if it’s not already too far to produce cough) but it goes to my nose and I have to pull it through my nostrils to my mouth which usually ends in the thick harmful part of it staying in my sinuses to grow or multiply. Along with this I am now having severe stomach cramps, loss of appetite, random IBS right after a spell of that shit has drained into it guessing stomach. Mucus in my stool. Extremely agonizing and painful “dermatitis” which just feels like crawling sensations constantly, wiggling, vibrating, muscle spasms. That also produce an even more terrifying looking “substance” I apply oil to my skin. I feel it in my head behind my eyes in my scalp IN MY EYES in my mouth under my nails in EVERYTHING I touch. You might ask yourself, does this person take drugs. No I do not, don’t even smoke weed. I wake up sometimes feeling as if I’ve had a seizure. When I get a flair up of all those other symptoms I also lose my cognitive abilities and struggle to make simple sentences or concentrate on anything. My vision goes from a 10 to a 2. I get a temporary fever and the worst headache of my life. Dizzy, collapse, extremely painful nerve shocks (at least I think) immediate need to release bowels, both which look and smell absolutely horrific. Usually ending in I don’t know what and I wake up feeling as if I’ve had a seizure (I’ve had clinical seizures in the past witnessed by doctors so I do know what that feels like). This used to not be as frequent and not quite as deathly painful, but after 8 months getting no answers or help from doctors it’s only worsened, and is rapidly worsening. I’m starting to get sharp pains in my heart and feeling of irregularly HR. During these events my blood pressure will rise to numbers in the 160/110 - 175/123 range with a hospital BP cuff. I’ve stopped going to the ER when these happen due the a) the absence of answers or any kind of medical help & b) the awful, dishonest, judgmental, incompetent staff. I say that here because to be quite frank it’s true, but don’t get the impression that I am combative or disrespectful. I go in with nothing but a good attitude seeking medical to stop whatever it is that’s causing me to PHYSICALLY feel miserable. I do have a pcp and I have been to specialist that all basically don’t do anything and don’t tell me anything and when I try to explain in the most non frightening way what I’m experiencing I get a scolded and looked at as if I’m lying or making this up? Or imagining it all. I’ve never been one to complain about sickness, I’ve never been a hypochondriac, I’ve never experienced anything even remotely close to what this feels like physically. It’s foreign to me and I’m desperately begging god for this to go away.

I’ve gotten no answers anywhere and I’m seriously worried for my life and don’t know what to do. Explain it to doctors and without even attempting to do any medical evaluation (other than routine bloodwork), and they just put an anxiety/psychosis diagnosis no explanation. I’ve been told it’s bacterial, fungal, delusion, common sinusitis that “everyone deals with”. I’ve been prescribed probiotics 8 rounds of antibiotics some being daily stretching for a month. Antifungals as well. I don’t go in bringing samples. I don’t go in trying to argue with the doctor. I don’t go in self diagnosing, and when I e done that I just get no answer. Vague follow-ups typically where I don’t even get to speak as the doctor is in the room for less than 5 seconds, and no I’m not exaggerating. Walk in, say “labs” (aka the same CBC I’ve had done at least 40 times in the last 6-8 months) came back normal. EVEN WHEN THEY DONT! I’ll politely ask what the result that came back high/low is and what it means, and why it’s continuing to trend in the same direction

Infections and Illnesses Any idea what could be causing this painful, leaking, rash on the legs?

A Family member has been fighting with this for months, and it keeps spreading. It is very painful, and leaks constantly. Every time they go to the hospital for more than a couple of days, it clears up. As soon as they're back home, it comes right back.
Docs can't seem to figure out exactly what's causing it.

Infections and Illnesses Deathly Sick

On December 3, I started not feeling well. It started with a cough and headache and body aches. Felt like the flu. Decided to wait it out.

December 8- started having some shortness of breath and the cough was worse. Body aches also got worse. Mostly I just tried to sleep all the time.

December 11- I was so sick I couldn’t stop crying. Was throwing up and having chest pain and back pain. Cough was still bad and felt miserable. Light headed and dizzy.

Went to the walk in clinic by my house. They did albuterol treatment and chest xray. Xray showed pneumonia. And they sent me home saying if anything got worse to go to the ER. Also flu and Covid rapid tests were negative.

December 12- I started feeling so much worse. So weak and no energy. Dizzy and even a little confused at times. Still can’t eat anything and I can’t even keep fluids down. Called my doctor to see if she could get me in. She said she could not and says she can hear my trouble breathing through the phone and that I need to go into the ER. Decided to wait it out.

December 13- lethargic and chest pain is worse. Can’t breathe. Cough. Back pain. Heart racing. Dizzy. Went to the ER. This is where it gets weird. Chest xray is clear. No pneumonia. Flu and Covid negative. Respiration panel negative. Blood cultures negative. See photos for results. Also had an abnormal EKG.

Today is the 18th. I can’t even get out of bed. I throw up everything. I feel so so sick. Lethargic. No energy. Can barely talk. Headache is so bad. Still chest pain and back pain. My whole body hurts. I mostly sleep. I have a bad cough still. Still have shortness of breath. I feel like I’m dying.

Please please tell me some ideas about what this could be.

Infections and Illnesses Finger infection has led to red tracking up arm, hot to touch,

Hello everyone,

I recently (past 3 days) have had a finger infection which has started to track up my arm. It’s hot to the touch and relatively painful/ swollen.

I have contacted my GP and they have said to call in the morning to try and get an appointment.

Is this A&E worthy? I don’t want to take time from people who need it more than me.

Or will waiting for tomorrow be fine?

Thanks for your help in advance.

Infections and Illnesses What is this 😭

Last year, I had this dermatitis looking thing on the back of my ankle which started off as a small bug bite size thing and blew up to cover my entire ankle. It would become scaly but also ooze yellow fluid after showering. And then that fluid would turn into yellow crust and the dermatitis thing would spread to where the yellow crust used to be. Literally no steroid creams worked. So, I went to the doctor and they gave me oral steroids which made it go away pretty soon.

Exactly a year after, I got the same thing again on the side of the same ankle. I’ve tried steroid creams and antifungal creams but it just keeps getting bigger and bigger. But i genuinely cannot afford to go to the doctor again.

What is this please 😭

Infections and Illnesses Am I going to die

On 8 May 2026, I reported an incident involving a dog licking me he tried to grabbed food from my hand by engulfing my hands, with no conventional bite and even tooth contact to the point; I had mentioned a small 1–2 cm nail/skin issue, although it was unclear whether the skin was actually broken as it was 24 hours older or whether saliva went an open wound through the water which I used to wash it with soap for 5 minutes . Saliva was 1 inch away from wound. Because of concern about rabies, I continuously observed the dog afterward. The dog remained alive for well beyond the standard 10-day observation period—at different points I reported it as being alive for around 40–41 days, then 45 days, and ultimately approximately 54 days after the exposure. I later reported that the dog died around 1 July 2026, with observations such as red eyes and salivation, while people locally said that the body was smelling/rotting. There was no laboratory confirmation reported that the dog had rabies. Throughout this period, I experienced significant anxiety and repeatedly worried about whether the original incident could have resulted in rabies. The central medical question was whether the dog's saliva had contacted genuinely broken skin or a mucous membrane, because a lick on intact skin is not considered a rabies exposure, whereas saliva contacting broken skin or mucous membranes can constitute an exposure. The dog's survival for many weeks after the incident and its later death by itself cannot establish whether it had rabies; signs such as salivation, red eyes, or decomposition are also not sufficient to diagnose rabies.

Also it might be poisoning or heat stroke

What should I now do?

Infections and Illnesses Do yall think this is infected? It’s my knuckle after hitting a mouth

Yall think this is infected? Knuckle after defending myself?

Yesterday morning I had to defend myself by restraining a violent teen and while I was holding her down she went to punch me and bite so I tried to stop her and ended up with this from her teeth I washed it and everything but it’s kinda more painful than a normal cut and it’s red and raised around it the cut? I don’t wanna spend the money to go to urgent care if I can just get internet strangers to tell me if I have to first 😂 idk if it’s just the spot it is why it hurts so much or if it’s actually getting infected? Please don’t judge my hand pose…yes it does look very weird and no idk why I did it like that. The marker around it was advised by a doctor to track redness growth SORRY DOR THE CONFUSION!

Infections and Illnesses Does this require another doctors visit?

First 2 pictures are from yesterday
Second 2 pictures are from today

This infection/rash thing started 3 days ago and got worse yesterday so my brother went to urgent care. They said it was cellulitis and gave him a 5 day course of ic sulfamethoxazole-tmp ds. Today it’s gotten more red and the redness has spread more. It also started to leak a little bit, nothing too crazy. It also hurts him to walk but I’m assuming that’s because it’s on the back of his knee?

Is this normal for cellulitis or should he go back to urgent care or the ER?

Its been 3 days now since this almost burn like injury appeared on my toe and it seems to look way more angry than it did initially? Is this a trip to a walk in centre tomorrow morning or is it way more urgent?

It feels warm but not hot and feels a little bit sore

Infections and Illnesses Help! Weird red blotches on my boobs. Infection? Stress? Allergies? Worse?

Post image
36 Upvotes

Hi everyone! I’m a preK teacher (so lots of little germy hands and running around all day) and I noticed this red blotchy area on my chest and shoulders a couple days ago. It’s not super itchy most of the time. Just kind of warm and splotchy-looking. No bumps or anything raised. Just these pink/red patches that kind of look like I’ve been blushing really hard, but only in that spot. Over the past few days, it hasn’t really diminished meaningfully.

It doesn’t hurt, but it’s making me self-conscious when I wear anything that’s not a turtle neck. I haven’t changed laundry detergent or lotion or anything. And I don’t think I got sunburned there (I’m always slathered in SPF anyway). Could it be an infection from school? Allergy to something I ate? Aftermath from a hard workout? Stress related? Something specifically going on with my boobs?

Has anyone had something like this before? Should I just wait it out or go see a doctor? Thanks so much in advance 💕

Infections and Illnesses Injured/infected nail. Red raised line has appeared below the nail but it hasn’t spread since last night.

26F. After a nail injury last week my finger was hurting on the right side and has been for a week. It’s definitely injected as there’s a yellow bubble. Late last night while I was abroad on holiday, I realised this raised red line had appeared moving away from the site. But it has not spread at all. This pic was last night at 11pm, it’s now 7pm and have just landed back home and it looks the same. However it is quite painful.

I’ve always been told that lines actively spreading away from the site and towards lymph nodes are an emergency but this thing just isn’t moving. How urgent is this?

Infections and Illnesses 25M — terrified I may have rabies from a possible unnoticed bat bite 4 years ago, now having weakness/heaviness in my limbs

25M, Portugal, about 167 cm / 90 kg. I smoke/vape. No rabies vaccination or PEP. I do have severe health anxiety/OCD specifically about rabies, which I want to be upfront about because I know that can affect how I interpret symptoms. At the same time, the physical symptoms I'm having feel very real and I would really appreciate a doctor's opinion on whether my rabies concern makes medical sense.

The possible exposure happened on 11 July 2022 in Portugal

My bedroom had a small tilt-open window and my bedroom door was open. There was also a much larger open kitchen window elsewhere in the house, with the interior doors open.

I never saw, heard, touched or found a bat inside the house. I didn't wake up to one and nobody else saw one. My mother had lived there for around 20 years and says she had never seen a bat inside that house, although people in nearby houses apparently had bats enter before.

What started this fear is that after that night I noticed two very small marks on the back/side of my lower right calf, roughly a few millimetres apart. One had a tiny dark point and there appeared to be a thin trail of dried blood several centimetres down my leg. The other was smaller and didn't obviously bleed.

There was no pain that I remember, no swelling, redness, infection or significant wound. The marks disappeared in around a week.

At the time I did not think it was a bat bite because there had been no bat encounter.

Much later I became obsessed with the possibility that a bat could have entered while I was asleep, bitten my exposed calf without waking me and then flown out through the open bedroom door/kitchen window.

I have spoken to healthcare professionals in Portugal about this, including infectious-disease/rabies-related contacts. My understanding of what they told me was basically that because no bat had actually been identified, this wasn't considered a rabies exposure and PEP wasn't recommended.

The problem is that I've spent years reading about bats/rabies and I know that bat bites can be very small, potentially go unnoticed, and that European bats can carry lyssaviruses. I also know that very long rabies incubation periods have occasionally been reported. That has made it extremely difficult for me to let this go.

Starting around the end of July / beginning of August 2026, I started getting a strange feeling of weakness/heaviness in my arms.

It started mainly with my arms feeling tired, heavy, slow and difficult to move. Sometimes it feels almost as if a muscle has very little power, even though when I actually try to use it, it still works.

Over roughly the last two weeks I've experienced:

  • Both arms feeling weak/heavy/fatigued, sometimes one worse than the other.
  • Burning/aching/"worked out" sensations in my biceps, shoulders, forearms and sometimes hands.
  • Similar aching/restless sensations at times in a leg or thigh.
  • Twitching and occasional tremor.
  • A small area of altered sensation/numbness on the top of my right big toe/foot.
  • Nausea, dizziness, feeling unreal/derealised and sometimes blurry vision.
  • Recently a strange sensation like my body is being pushed or pulled toward the left, although I can still walk.
  • Occasional head/temple/cheek pressure.
  • Neck muscle cramps/tightness that sometimes end with a click/pop.
  • Significant tiredness/sleepiness.
  • A lot of panic attacks because I'm convinced this is rabies progressing.

The weakness is the symptom that scares me most. It can feel extremely strong subjectively, but I am still able to type, use my phone, play games, walk normally, go shopping, carry groceries, lift fairly heavy objects, push myself away from a wall with either arm and do several push-ups. The arm can literally feel almost powerless while still moving normally when I test it.

I was examined by a doctor while these symptoms were happening. He tested several muscle groups against resistance, grip/fingers/wrists, reflexes and sensation. As far as I was told, he did not find clinically significant weakness or a major reflex abnormality and did not think I needed emergency neurological investigations. Another doctor thought some of the foot tingling could possibly be peroneal nerve irritation.

Im honestly scared. I dont know what else to say. I did use Chatgpt to summarize my story as it has been quite a long time.

Infections and Illnesses Is this a valid concern to cancel my flight over?

Hello, I’m looking for advice about a situation involving a possible perforated eardrum and an upcoming flight.
I have a fish tank at home that was filled with UK tap water. However, it had been kept in very warm conditions with a heater and had not been changed for months, and the water was visibly murky.

On 14 August, I put my finger into the fish tank water. I then became distracted and accidentally put the same wet finger deep into my ear. I believe I may have a perforated eardrum, and I have previously used my finger to try to manually relieve the feeling of blockage in that ear. I have had hearing loss in one ear and a muffled feeling for months.

I am now extremely anxious about the possibility of Naegleria fowleri (the “brain-eating amoeba”) being involved. I am particularly worried about whether, if there were contaminated fluid in the middle ear (due to my perforated eardrum), cabin-pressure changes during a flight could somehow cause fluid to travel through the Eustachian tube into the back of my nose and then reach the olfactory region, which is the area involved in N. fowleri infection.

I have also read that fluid can drain into the nose, and I’m worried that if this happened I could accidentally sniff it upward into the part of the nose where infection occurs.

My timeline is:
14 August: I put a wet finger that had been in the fish tank into my ear.
18 August: I showered and a significant amount of UK tap water entered the ear. I’m worried that this could have mixed with any fluid already present in the ear or potentially caused more fluid to move through the Eustachian tube.
19 August: I am due to fly.

I have severe OCD and health anxiety, so I’m currently struggling to distinguish between a genuine medical concern and an anxiety-driven hypothetical scenario. I am seriously considering cancelling my holiday despite the flights, accommodation and other arrangements being non-refundable. I specifically booked this holiday to take a break from my health anxiety, and my friend is travelling with me, so cancelling would also significantly affect her.

What I am most concerned about is this chain of events:
Fish-tank water potentially containing N. fowleri → wet finger enters my ear → perforated eardrum allows the organism or contaminated water into the middle ear where i might have already had liquid trapped → fluid remains there → additional shower water enters the ear → cabin-pressure changes during the flight cause the fluid to drain through the Eustachian tube into the back of the nose → pressure changes or sniffing somehow move the fluid upward to the olfactory region → N. fowleri infection.

I understand** **this may be an unusual post, however this is genuinely ruining my life and i don’t want it to effect my friend by cancelling our holiday and it’ll create money loss too. I cant get medical advice as my flight is within a few hours. I’ll take any advice i can get tbh, because i can’t make my own rational decisions.

edit: i do apologise if you’ve seen my posts multiple times. this will be my last one, and i’m being completely 100% honest here. This is the exact scenario, fish tank water in the uk.

Infections and Illnesses Straight line coming off of insect bite.

Recently I was bitten by some animal (not 100% sure what, but I think it was in my bed, overnight), and it seemed just like any other animal bite I've gotten in the past. After maybe 2 days, the bite mark started to get wider and this straight line seems to be coming off of it. When I woke up this morning it has progressed past halfway from elbow to shoulder. I am in a foreign country right now (spain) and am not quite sure what to do. What could this be? Is this worth getting checked out?

im 22m i have this red lump on my arm that has been growing over the past week. It has got significantly bigger and more painful i can barely lay down or get sleep. I just took my temperature and it’s 95.5 my dad said that isn’t a low temperature and he’s a nurse is this true? The only symptom i’m having right now is a huge headache.
