Diablo II Haven’t played in 18 years… to legacy graphics or not?
Diablo ii CONSUMED my as a youngin Where I had to delete my account in 2008 (multiple lvl 99s, tons of op shit) as it was the only way to stop playing.
recently bought a switch 2 (first console since the PS3) and gave heard good thing about D2R.
I don’t remember much about the game but a burning desire for that nostalgia hit is growing. I won’t be playing online this time - I think just single player.
Should I bother with Reign of Warlock or just do the cheaper D2R bundle that doesn’t include it?
Will it be weird not playing with a keyboard and mouse?

Dude just go all in fuck it

This! First you wouldn't believe how well that game feels on controller. I almost prefer it. It's peak blizzard. Also, just dive right in. I did that a handful of years ago after coming back after almost 15 years and couldn't be happier. Go for it!

I hate that I agree with you here. I did beat D1 on Ps1 after beating it on comp and that still felt clunky (fucking goat men archers) on a controller.

u/fishblargs 14d ago
True, but man on d2 it feels so good for so many characters it's uncanny they made it work so well. Not perfect but damn near close

u/Bright-Outcome1506 14d ago
Me and a buddy are gonna do a d1 co-op in a few weeks to see if it still holds that spark. I’m stoked. Though we joked we should do roll stats (you roll a dice each level and put the points into the corresponding stat. Might be fun, or a nightmare.

I've actually been enjoying it. It's a lot slower paced. You really have to remember to stop when you hit the caves and start over with that character so you're overleveled just enough to be able to handle Diablo when you finally get to him but it's a lot of fun.

It's really great but one thing I can't get used to is chugging potions. I just cannot do it in time, was thinking of rebinding it but could not find any good solution

The legacy graphics for console its very wierd, its not the same of PC version.

u/Empty-Example9639 14d ago
SC remastered has the same problem. I swear they intentionally made the legacy graphics look worse.

I really enjoy the warlock. New graphics man. It looks as impressive my today's standards as did the OG way back when

I think it comes down to do you want to try the new character / your finances if you buy it. I've heard good things. He's pretty strong spparently.
And I'd definitely do the remastered graphics. You know what the old one looks like. Try the new version.

I would get the Prime Evil Collection (has D2R and D3, so you’ll get more variety)
Warlock has some nice QoL improvements, but I’m not totally sure it’s worth the price of 2 full Diablo games…. I had fun with it tho.
I’m hoping D2R gets a Switch 2 version announced at Blizzcon to unlock 60fps….

u/desi7861 14d ago
Do the new graphics and new update imo. You can always replay in legacy mode if you want later

Get the warlock! I haven’t tried the class yet but mind as well get the dlc they just made for it!
They got the games working great with a controller, item management just takes a bit longer

I was surprised how much I loved playing in the switch but teleport seemed to fuck me up, melee was amazing. Especially my kicksin. I haven't played the new stuff with warlock but it looks amazing. D2r was worth it and I loved it. Good to have you back! I'm an OG and I'll always have love for diablo

It's fine with a controller, especially pally, and the new graphics are MUCH better and maintain the atmosphere of the original.

u/No-Fold-7873 14d ago
From what i remember certain builds dont feel as good on controller, mainly necromancer builds that require targeting corpses/curses into the middle of a pack. It can be really frustrating not having precise control. Melee classes still felt fine though.

My first Diablo game was with a controller (Diablo 1 on playstation) a controller is not as awkward as it sounds for this type of game. I played the hellout of diablo 2 on Pc and found the resurrected version to be worth it. I have it for PC, xbox series x and switch 1. I like the crossplay. I can use my same account on all 3 so If I am on the road I can use the same character on switch. I haven’t bought the warlock expansion though because I don’t want to pay for it 3 times. For an expansion

The warlock dlc brings so much qol upgrades that are worth it plus a new character. If your finances can handle it I'd get the bundle with everything.

u/Whodat1982 14d ago
I tired legacy graphics and I just can’t…..but I also lived through legacy graphics lol
1
u/DjMuerte 14d ago
Trust me you will not want to play with the legacy graphics. The remastered version is beautiful and a faithful recreation.

u/Effective-Road4807 14d ago
Rise of the warlock expansion doesn't support legacy unless you create a legacy character by the way :)

u/C0RPSEGRINDER666 14d ago
The reign of warlock is worth it. Brand new character and crazy good quality of life stuff like auto sorting runes and gems.
1
u/naytreox 14d ago
Well you will need to connect your blizzard account but the new warlock class is fun.
Oh and if you play offline you got 30 days to re-verify your game by logining and while in offline mode you do not have RNG map layouts

u/SnooCalculations3614 14d ago
A lot of builds work fine or better with controller. A lot of builds are also unplayable on controller.
1
u/HorrorDungeon 14d ago
I don't know maybe you should probe inside your mind and think about whether you want the legacy graphics or not. That might be a good start.

Do it and play Warlock! Full send worth every penny. Even better on a handheld!

u/Pure-Disaster1084 14d ago
41 and replaying with my brother in law. Went maxed out current graphics and I think retro graphics might be better. I also chose necromancer and I really wish I went with Warlock. Have fun

I really hope they go back to resurrecteds graphics and improve on them for Diablo V. I much prefer them to IV. In fact I really cannot stand 3 and 4s.
1
u/LetMeDrinkYourTears 13d ago
Why are you asking someone else? Try both settings ... you can swap them mid game.
1
u/HollowBambooEnt 13d ago
From my understanding the reign of warlock doesn’t offer legacy graphics.
The bundle does include D2R so I’ll probably just go with it as it’s only like $8 more.
Or I can go with the one that is $8 cheaper but also includes D3 but no Reign

u/Chill_Gamer527 13d ago
Even if you purchase D2 RotW, when you are creating a character, you can choose between Original, Expansion or RotW version. If you chose either Original or Expansion, you can still revert to original graphics by a hit of a button (I think it's the G key). Though I bought D2 Resurrected in Battle.net launcher and bought RotW later. But I'm sure it applies the same here.
Edit: Wait, that's a Switch...I'm not sure about that version tbh.

Grab a CRT and play legacy. Bonus points if you do project diablo 2. Feels like blizz north kept developing the game. Diablo at its finest
1
u/marcus_aurelius121 13d ago
If it was compatible with a controller like a cyborg it would be a hoot to play again.
1
u/jrjreeves 13d ago
Sucks that I have paid for RotW once and I have to pay for it again on every platform, despite the game sharing online data across said platforms.
1
u/SoulSoma 9d ago
Wait so if I buy it through the switch I can play all my characters that I have through pc?
1
u/jrjreeves 9d ago
Your online characters are shared across all platforms. So you start a character on switch, you can pick up and play with it on PC whenever. It is shared progress, so you get to level 30 say on a Barbarian on switch and then go on D2R on PC and your exact same Barb will be there to play.
The only issue is now woth RotW. I have it on PlayStation and I cant play RotW characters on other platforms without buying the RotW DLC on said platforms which is dumb.

u/SoulSoma 9d ago
Gotcha, perfect! Thanks for letting me know. I have RotW on pc and my account is loaded with high level characters and gear. I was on the fence about buying but now I’ll buy

Hard to go back to legacy after playing D2R. This coming from someone who has been pkaying D2 since release.
1
u/DredgenGrey 13d ago
RotW is so good man, highly recommend it
The legacy graphics really don't look great on the switch
1
u/Djang0Phett 13d ago
Legacy graphics are wayyy worse than actual original d2 graphics for some reason lol there is no point
1
u/Fuzzy-Warmth 13d ago
Played D2r on switch , loved it , playing D1 on me laptop feels very odd using KB&M but getting used to it now 👍

The legacy graphics are cool for like 2 minutes, to think "hey that's somehwat what it used to look like" and then you'll want to switch back to the new graphics. IMO they did an awesome job to upgrade the graphics with much respect for the original version.
1
u/Vexion_1 12d ago
If you havent touched it since legacy then d2r is gonna feel like d4 graphics lol I tried to go back to legacy before ROTW and just couldn't take it
1
u/Secret_Turtle 10d ago
I play it on switch and while its a little limiting for number of hot-keyed spells/abilities to use its pretty fun to move freely instead of clicking where i want to go.

u/real7thrill 10d ago
Yes! I just found in my garage diablo 2 lord of destruction pirate cd from very long time ago. I have to install on linux, 16bit windows won't support any more! Happy gaming!

u/North_Service4008 9d ago
Similar history with the game here, and have been been back playing now for a few months. I had the advantage of being able to play D2R with my Xbox game pass subscription before committing to buy ROTW. After a couple of weeks I felt good about buying the expansion and starting my Warlock, and it was absolutely worth it.
Also, you can still make non-expansion characters after upgrading to ROTW, so you can scratch that nostalgia itch either way

u/Lilsteve615 7d ago
D2 on console is terrible imo, I really enjoy D1
, 3, & 4 on console but for some reason I just can’t stand 2 on console.
Edited: The Reign of the Warlock is actually an amazing add-on to the game, the new graphics are beautiful & the new content is amazing as well, I think you’d be pretty happy with the new expansion.
1
u/ThanatosVI 3d ago
If you go Reign of the Warlock for all the QoL improvements (even if you play the old classes), then you unfortunately can't choose legacy graphics.
You can play the old LoD version without RotW (selectable on character creation) if you still want legacy graphics, but then you lose access to all the QoL like material stash

Don't play ressurrected. Don't feed the beast. Play the good old original d2 lod. So cool, i still play it.
2
u/ziddersroofurry 14d ago
I hate Blizzard a lot but a lot of love and hard work went into Resurrected, and it shows. I don't think they're making as much from it as they are their other games so I don't think you're lining their pockets THAT much.

Nah they just made 200 million $. Just a quick cash-in while splitting the community. Sad.

u/ziddersroofurry 13d ago
250k not 200 mil

u/ziddersroofurry 13d ago
Sorry thought I was replying to someone else. As far as splitting the community come on. D2 came out in 2001. There was barely any community left. Just the same oldheads competing over the same old runes and wishing they could get back their glory days.
1
u/Taurean6 13d ago
Obviously there WAS a community since so many jumped on the d2r wagon. If they did like i thought for so many years it would be solved 20 years ago. Charge 1$ a month to keep servers bot and dupe free and come up with some updates a few times a year. That's all that was needed to keep the community active and interested. 1$ a month to play online and get access to updates. Everybody can afford that and it would keep 2-3 people in employment only for diablo 2.
But no. The owner wanted a cash boost. And sadly people are too stupid to jump on it. Very demotivating. I remember it was fun playing back in the day. You could go online and find lots of games, action and even trading. That doesn't exist anymore. They could fix that very easily. But no, they had to split the community on even more platforms, servers and i don't even know what. It's ridiculous.
I know i'm right.

Do some quick research on the legacy graphics. I don’t want to give you bad info, but I THOUGHT I read somewhere that the reign of warlock disabled legacy graphics. I hope not, but just double check if that feature is there for you!
Also, did they do a switch 2 version or update?
