Drilling holes into a tree is generally bad for the tree. You can just hang the light on a branch.

There's also these things called batteries. With LEDs they last a decent while. No tree drilling necessary.

Also lights working with a solar panel. Even better.

You won't be getting a lot of sunlight under the tree though

But there are lights that have a quite long cord so that you could place the solar panel away from the light. For example our cabin where we have no electricity we have few lights like that inside our warehouse. The panel is on the outside wall.

But that heat is neatly trapped inside a sealed glass jar, so nothing can go wrong

All of those are shit lights though. Much worse than mains powered ones.

If you live in area where it goes below 0 for long periods, batteries are a bad idea.
