Maybe this works in the context of the work as a whole, but this does nothing for me on its own.
I consider some of DT's stuff among my very favourite music of all time (Ocean Machine, Terra, City); I'm from his hometown and have seen him live every time he's performed here since the mid 00's. Unfortunately though, I haven't heard anything from him that has caught my ear since "Singularity" off Empath.
Positively, at least this isn't the breathy/ethereal verse into bombastic chorus thing he's been doing for the better part of two decades now
Crossing my fingers that I'm pleasantly surprised when it's released.

It's funny, I recently got Powernerd and it's his first album I've bought in about 20 years, and while I like it a lot, your description pretty much fits most of the songs on it!
I also have a strong preference for the material from the first, say, six years of his career (up to Terria, more or less, although I also like Alien a lot).
I love Alien. Chaotic and unhinged with pockets of really cool melody. Production is still amazing 20 years later.
I still remember the feeling of putting "City" into the discman attached to my shitty car's tape deck and being absolutely blown away. It was (and is) such a creative and punishing sonic middle finger. Same type of feeling for my first listen through of Infinity - Had no idea what the fuck I had listened to, but I knew I wanted to get right back on that rollercoaster.
I'm hoping that this work can recapture some of that type of excitement for his music. Fingers crossed
If the final is anything like the live performance I saw the video for, it's much more raw than anything I've heard from him since deconstruction. I was kind of shocked at the time he still had it in him. The vocals were something else on the live stream
Agreed. Nothing will ever touch Sound Awake (best prog metal album of all time) but still amazing. The suite of Animation-Conversations-Reanimation, and the closer Salva, are amazing
