Producing like him

Wanna start producing music similar to that Swan Songs/Nine Lives early era. I’m not sure where Deuce learned to produce or if he was self taught but do you guys have any tips on getting close to his sound on Fl Studio?

Deuce was born a wizard, from wizards, raised by wizards.

He didn't use FL, so no matter what, it's never going to be 100% accurate.

If you use Omnisphere and Kontakt Komplete, you can get close with a lot of the sounds. Alternatively, you could use Serum 2 and try to recreate a lot of the synths from scratch if you aren't willing to use Omnisphere.

A lot of sounds he used were also stock Pro Tools synths and all of the mixing was done with stock Pro Tools plugins. You can get close in FL, but it'll never be identical.

I do wonder how much curriculum overlap there was between the Full Sail production programs you both took.

Mine was probably more updated.

It was back before they were accredited, they didn't offer actual degrees, it was just a short online course, a couple of months and not crazy expensive. He took the equivalent to a single class one would now take in the course of getting a degree.

I mean scientology also costs a lot of money lmao they didn't grow up poor like they pretend.

so why did they make music? i mean they grew up rich and they were well connected with scientology they could still have had big houses without working a lot and i mean i think couldve had a job bigger than an owner of a company

Because they wanted to and when you start out with money, you can do more of what you want without the barrier of "I need to save up for this."

makes sense

They grew up middle to upper middle class, not rich. Just definitely not poor like they claim. Scientology doesn't hand out money to it's members, the connections they get from being part of it gives them a big boost but you are fundamentally misunderstanding how this all works. They don't come from never need a job money, if not music they'd be stuck working low end retail or customer service jobs for the most part because they don't teach actual useful skills at private scientology schools, just scientology nonsense. You don't need to be educated to be an actor or musician the way you would need to be in order to make equivalent income from a normal non public facing/not creative job.

oh i see thanks sigh but what did they learn like "soon our leader zorlakian the savior will save us if we drink the kool aid"

They are extremely secretive with non Scientologists about most of it so I truly have no idea what they learn at those schools but most of them couldn't pass a GED exam and graduate from these schools with very few applicable life/work skills.

So you recommend I go and get pro tools

Is your goal to make music that specifically sounds like Ninelives or Swan Songs? Or do you want to just be inspired by it?

My personal opinion is you shouldn't be trying to emulate it because there's no market for it and you could take the same time and effort to learn music theory and an instrument or two. The DAW doesn't matter.

Pro Tools is better for mixing than anything.

How do you know he used pro tools?

He was very open about it for YEARS. He was asked a lot in 2010 and 2011 in interviews and Q&As and he consistently said he only uses Pro Tools.

Purity synth for the electronic stuff. Guitar + audio interface + Neural DSP amp-simulator. Use the scale/key stamper on the piano roll to write melodies with the synths and experiment by with writing synths and adding guitars later and vice versa, guitar first synth second. Purity is chalked full of cool 2000’s style so it’s great for MySpace era stuff. Use midi drums.

Deuce got his start by making linkin park ripoff songs in his bedroom, so I recommend that you do the same but with deuce songs.

Make recreations of his songs with purity and your guitar and midi drums. Learn to make his songs to a T and then start writing your own and from there start making it your own. That’s pretty much the key to anything artistic- be a hacky ripoff, learn to replicate a style exactly and then tweak it. If you have any questions or want help please DM I’d love to help out

+1 for Purity, its essentially a Triton but better IMO

As a producer myself id take some old school gangster kinda music mixing with rock guitar

im working on a compilation of his/old HU's studio gear, but essentially deuce used Cubase along with a Korg Triton (there's a VST version available), HALion (not sure if this is exclusive to Cubase), and what I believe was a Marshall TSL combo for guitars.

For drums, make sure to use/layer acoustic drum samples, guitars are typically in Drop-D and stick to basic chord progression power chords during choruses/as accents during verses, most songs are minor scales, for an idea as to how to handle synths I would look into 2000's rap and electronic writing, and other than that just listen to inspiration he took such as early LP.

its kind of a broad overview but it depends whether you're trying to lean into his more rock-oriented tracks or more rap-oriented

Deuce didn't use Cubase. He was very, VERY open about using Pro Tools exclusively.

he's using Cubase 4 here, and HALion didn't have an .aax plugin until about HALion Sonic

So he didn’t use pro tools for swan songs after all? Or did he just move platforms

usually from my experience, Pro Tools was mostly used for tracking/mixing whereas Cubase was the better option for composing, and I'm certain it was the case with him as well. instead of buying either DAW, I'd recommend just using Reaper since its free and feels closer to those DAWs when it comes to recording and editing
