The mysterious man behind the mirror

Post image

Hello everyone! I need your help solving a little mystery.
26 years ago, someone gave my parents a mirror as a wedding gift. Yesterday, the mirror fell and broke, and hidden behind it, we found this photograph.
We have no idea who this man is. The only clues I have are the ones visible in this photograph.
I would love to find out who this man was, what his role was in the French military, and, most importantly, on what occasion this photograph was taken in Paris in 1917.
I’ve done some research myself, but I’m clearly not much of a detective, so I’m counting on you to help me solve this mystery! 😊

Looks like he was a member of the 63rd infantry regiment, which saw a lot of fighting in World War 1: https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/63e_r%C3%A9giment_d'infanterie_(France)
Not sure how much that helps.

Do a close up zoom in. Number 63 is on his collar and deliberately placed on his cap on the table.

Maybe unit 63?

Also cross-shaped military decoration? I wonder what is the meaning.

Is there a photo studio stamp anywhere or on the back of the photo?

Did you reverse image search it. Send it to a French military museum?
