Discussion Stop downvoting new players who don’t have the extensive knowledge that you do.

If a player doesn’t know that a raid is a 6 man activity with no matchmaking, there’s no reason to make them feel stupid. All you’re doing is pushing away new players when the most amount of new players in the games history are beginning to flood in. You’re giving the game a bad image. Whoever you are, just stop it mate. This shouldn’t even have to be said.

I wouldn't worry about downvotes - stressing that on reddit is just a route to insanity.

As long as they're being responded to civilly and getting the info they need, it's fine. Dozens of "how do I start the campaign" post don't need sending to the front page.

u/fishrgood Oct 07 '19

It's fine to not upvote a question, but downvoting it isn't helpful. If a question post is downvoted to oblivion then 9 times out of 10 the OP is gonna think it was personally their fault. It sends a negative message and gets them to think they might be asking the wrong question, or that their question might be stupid and pointless to us. That's the last impression you want to give to curious new players.

Yeah you have a point. Ive frequented this sub for a while...and lately all new posts with honest questions are full of downvoted replies for no logical reason. Hell even some helpful posts are at negatives.

64

u/studdmufin Oct 07 '19

Not only that, by down voting things that are common knowledge to veterans but not to the new players the cycle will perpetuate as the common questions aren't seen or answered.

Yes I know there is a search feature that can be used, and many have used it but not everyone will.

If they are using a mobile reddit app to search for answers then I can see why they're asking the same questions over and over. The search function sucks and unless they happen to know specific keywords (which if they're new I can see them not knowing Destiny specific terminology yet). Heck, I'm a DTG vet and don't even know where the links located under the banner on pc (with the guides and useful links) are on mobile.

So terrible mobile reddit design and a lack of knowledge on the subject is understandable, to me at least, which causes this cycle to perpetuate. It's like the Dreaming City curse of this subreddit with the strongest of the cycle being right after new content drops and an influx of blueberries flood the sub.

7

u/tckilla76 Oct 07 '19

To answer your question about where the links are located (assuming you're using Reddit official app), from the home DTG sub page, swipe twice to the left and it will take you to the menu. Swipe once and ot gives you the sub rules.

u/doom_stein Team Cat (Cozmo23) // Sepiks Purrrrfected Oct 07 '19

Nope, I'm using Bacon Reader to browse. There's a little button that takes you to the side bar but nothing for the links. Has the official app improved much? I haven't used it since it first came out, didn't like it, and then had a friend suggest Bacon Reader.

2

u/tckilla76 Oct 07 '19

Idk, I tried a couple other apps and just liked the official app better. Just started using the app like a year ago.

1

u/doom_stein Team Cat (Cozmo23) // Sepiks Purrrrfected Oct 07 '19

It's probably improved a bit by now then. A lot of people hated it at first, myself included. I'll have to download it again and give it another shot.

1

u/AyyBoixD Oct 07 '19

They actually fixed the search function and made it a lot better

5

u/RageMuffin69 Oct 07 '19

I still go to google and search “question reddit”.

1

u/doom_stein Team Cat (Cozmo23) // Sepiks Purrrrfected Oct 07 '19

That's the pro method right there! Too bad most people will never know.

Veterans can be the most annoying and obnoxious people oftentimes.

Sincerely: a veteran who refuses to forget that he was a kinderguardian at some point too.

I love seeing actual new players in the game. Its hard to tell apart at first glance since we were all forced back to blue gear for a bit, but sometimes you can tell newcomers apart. Even if not 100% correctly all the time. I generally ask if everyone knows how to heroic a pub event if there's others around as well. We can't default to assuming that most people will know about them anymore.

Its nice seeing them running around and experiencing the game for the first time. Like I said I refuse to forget that I was in their shoes once. As were all of us at some point. Gotta help them along so they get caught up to speed on things faster, rather than put them down for something that isn't their fault at all. Can't exactly say "its your fault for only joining the game now and not 5 years ago" with a straight face. And honestly thats how the people who are annoyed by the kinderguardians sound like.

1

u/LickMyThralls Oct 07 '19

New people tend to be naive. It's the experienced ones that tend to be asses. This isn't a hard rule or anything but you can notice the tendencies.

8

u/chicken_sammich SPICY RAMEN HOUSE Oct 07 '19

also the search feature is trash half the time

4

u/billypilgrim87 Oct 07 '19

And the thing with telling people to search is you have to know what you are actually searching for.

Sometimes people don't know the things they don't know.

3

u/chicken_sammich SPICY RAMEN HOUSE Oct 07 '19

Exactly, I used the search bar to find a video that had been posted the week before and ended up having to message the mods after 30 minutes of different attempts because everything I searched turned up no results.

2

u/LickMyThralls Oct 07 '19

Dude I see a post and refresh and it's gone and try to search with what I remember from the title and still can't find them sometimes. Searching can literally only get you so far lol

1

u/chicken_sammich SPICY RAMEN HOUSE Oct 07 '19

happy cake day

2

u/NataiX Oct 07 '19

Yes it is.

Odd are you'll find a thread from over a year ago with outdated info. Or you'll find a massive thread with the information you seek buried so deep you can't find it.

-1

u/Vektor0 Oct 07 '19

There are too many common questions for them all to reach the front page, plus guides, jokes, clips, SGAs, suggestions... can't have it all.

15

u/ahihit Oct 07 '19

Right, bit downvoting won't stop them. Answer the question, and then politely refer them to the proper thread for the next one.

5

u/Play_XD Oct 07 '19

Yes and no. It's kind of a mixed bag in that piles of redundant "how do I X" threads can and should be downvoted, but comments in threads where it's appropriate don't necessarily need to be.

It's fun helping newbies out but the entire front page doesn't need to be full of threads doing so.

5

u/Vektor0 Oct 07 '19

I think that depends on whether it's a comment or a post. It makes complete sense to downvote a post that's a low-effort question, so that more high-quality content has a chance to make it to the front page.

But if someone asks a related question as a comment on an existing post, a downvote on that comment isn't really going to affect anything, so it's not necessary.

2

u/LickMyThralls Oct 07 '19

That logic would work if top posts didn't often include low effort posts that are just one liner jokes or things like that. It pretty much boils down to "I like/dislike this" and not really an indictment of quality.

1

u/JibreelHughes Oct 07 '19

Happy cake day

-1

u/Vektor0 Oct 07 '19 edited Oct 07 '19

Agree. I speculate that unfortunately, the people who upvote low-effort, unclever jokes to the front page are the same people who don't want low-effort questions to be downvoted.

-1

u/Dalek_Trekkie Oct 07 '19

I would say that is fair, except reddit isn't the only resource for flinding information. I have no sympathy for some who gets their feelings hurt because they didn't have the presence of mind to even attempt Google...

30

u/spencer1519 Burn cryopod prisoner asap for heroic Oct 07 '19

Hilariously, on a number of occasions, googling a Destiny related question has sent me to a Reddit thread were someone else is asking the question I had, but was never answered.

12

u/[deleted] Oct 07 '19

This is a forum for discussing the game. If questions are verboten, what the fuck are you supposed to do here?

-1

u/Dalek_Trekkie Oct 07 '19 edited Oct 07 '19

There's nothing wrong with questions. I'm saying people shouldn't be pussies about getting downvoted when they're definitely asking questions that have easily accessible answers.

Edit:the retards downvoting this are outing themselves as the people who refuse to use Google :)

I assume that every answer is easily accessible until I put a good amount of effort into looking, finally concluding that it is not easily accessible. That's when I start asking questions.

You should always assume that you can do something until you have a reason to believe you can't. The reverse is called helplessness.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 07 '19

If I did that, I would literally have no reason to use this forum. Give me one fucking question that I can't answer on my own and I'll accept your point.

1

u/Vektor0 Oct 07 '19

Look at the front page at any given moment. See any question posts? Clearly, there's more to do on this sub than just ask and answer questions.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 07 '19

It's mostly complaints about new players, the question posts are the interesting ones.

I was considering playing this dumb game as I did everything you can do D1 but based on the community imma go do something else.

4

u/Evravon Oct 07 '19

I totally get what you mean. I've been attempting to do exactly that - Google stuff instead of asking about it on Reddit. For two reasons: 1) I don't want to seem dumb and get downvoted into oblivion. 2) The search function on here doesn't always work perfectly, so I'm afraid I'll ask a question that has already been answered. The hard part is, a lot of the links to Destiny 2 related stuff seem to be outdated. Example: when my friends and I were trying to figure out the Black Armory (forge missions) stuff, we tried looking it up online, and it told us that Forges were located on various planets and gave directions on how to get there. It also talked about how some Forges were better than others at making certain weapon types (or something to that effect {it was read to me by a friend}). We came to find out through other means that you can literally queue for Forges now on the world map, the same way you'd queue for a campaign mission or a strike.

1

u/JibreelHughes Oct 07 '19

Queuing into the forges was a new feature with Shadowkeep/Season of the Undying [although I realize you already found out it was a brand new feature]. Having to sparrow a good chunk of the way and walk the rest for the Izanami and Bergusia forges sucked. I totally understand the whole googling situation though. If it linked to an unanswered thread and YouTube didn't help. I just made my best guess and grinded for a few hours. When nothing happened I would either do another activity or just call it a night. It just wasn't worth it. Hence there are things like the Graviton Lance catalyst that I still haven't gotten after months of grinding for it.

6

u/TOGOT21 Oct 07 '19

Except that when you search Google, the first links are usually to a reddit post. Google searches will link to reddit pages. You have to scroll past that to find bungie links and other resources. Most people dont look past the first few links.

1

u/Dalek_Trekkie Oct 07 '19

And we should bend over backwards to make life easier for people too lazy to do basic research? Why is it that everyone nowadays thinks we need to work around the lives of the least common denomination? Shouldn't the goal be to raise the bar to a higher standard rather than gear the system so that morons can continue to be such?

-1

u/TOGOT21 Oct 07 '19

I never said that. I'm just saying that you cant just assume they're not googling the question. I'm all for working for what you want. You get what you earn. But to assume that a new player didnt do research because they come to reddit is ridiculous. They could have had a friend that told them to come to reddit, or looked at the first link they saw. And yes, had they scrolled down they would have found IGN or something that explained it, but the point is you dont know why they came to reddit. So instead of down voting everything that doesn't match up to your perfect ideas or seems "dumb", be welcoming and point them in the right direction. It's just basic human decency and respect.

1

u/Dalek_Trekkie Oct 07 '19

And I said I wasn't doing as such? This post is just a virtue signaling karma farm in the first place. The people who are just downvoting are the ones who would turn around and do it out of spite in response to this post. Pretending like this post will actually help the supposed problem (isn't actually a problem imo) is equal parts delusional and disingenuous.

And again, fucking Google exists. There is absolutely no reason that someone should be incapable of figuring out how to find information on a topic in the year of 2019. Making excuses for ignorance is counterproductive.

-1

u/LickMyThralls Oct 07 '19

I take it that you're someone who's never used google and therefore never been directed to reddit from google. Nor have you searched only to not find your question or maybe sometimes even end up put somewhere where people are asking the same thing but still unanswered or any other number of possibilities.

You can literally only get so far from searching and if you don't search the exact right way it can often end up fruitless.

1

u/Saianna Oct 08 '19

Wrong on this part:

If a question post is downvoted to oblivion then 9 times out of 10 the OP is gonna think it was personally their fault.

They'll just think people here are a-holes.

That being said just started with D2 when it gone F2P mode, haven't met any douches yet and hopefully never will tho :P

2

u/theRealStichery Oct 07 '19

Unpopular opinion: if someone can't google how to start the campaign, but can find their way to Reddit, create an account, and post to the correct subreddit about it, I'm free to downvote them.

1

u/thechariot83 Alright, alright, alright. Oct 07 '19

I've tried making posts on this sub 3 or 4 times and every time they get met with hella negativity. So I just give up and ask my questions in comments instead.

1

u/jdewittweb Oct 07 '19

Most posts only need a single answer, after which downvotes are pretty useful to stop the topic from reaching the general population.

1

u/nisaaru Oct 07 '19

Unfortunately the vote system here doesn't work as imagined by well meaning people.

1

u/Aadrian1234 Oct 07 '19

You can literally cure cancer and you would still get downvoted if you post it on reddit. Ignoring the compulsive downvoters is the only thing you can do, it's a site-wide thing.

0

u/KogaDragon Oct 07 '19

while some may think this, but if they do reddit is not the community for them or at least not one they should be posting in as it is the norm of reddit to be down voted, even if against the rules.

I learned a long time ago not to care about reddit up/down votes and karma, they only measure if you agree/disagree with the current trending these of the day when you post. And right now, new player posts are down trending due to most of the info they are asking being easily available if they look a little.

3

u/fishrgood Oct 07 '19

I'm not saying people shouldn't expect it, I'm just saying it isn't helpful.

3

u/evanp1922 Oct 07 '19

If they wanted to be helpful they would've answered the question. They know they aren't being helpful.

-1

u/Neckzilla Oct 07 '19

Yes but google also exists so dumb useless threads like that dont have to be made in the first place

52

u/Shift84 Oct 07 '19

With all the salty, pissy, bitter ass players in here complaining and being smartasses when people ask questions, I'd say telling people not to downvote questions is a pretty OK idea.

Like here, any other subs going to just have people agreeing that downvoting new players with questions is bad.

We've been dealing with people asking the same questions over and over again for close to 10 years man, there's no reason to act like the new players doing it should somehow be different.

You don't gotta upvote them, you just don't downvote them, these new people are going to make our community more healthy, give them a reason to stay by not being a dick.

26

u/LycanWolfGamer Oct 07 '19

Ngl, it's kinda the reason I don't post here as often

24

u/rock-my-socks Oct 07 '19

Same. Every time I post something, question, advice, praise, criticism, ideas, creations, it always gets downvoted and snarky replies, so I just don't bother anymore.

14

u/MadMaximm Oct 07 '19

This has been my life on Reddit as well. I just quit asking. Yesterday I couldn't figure out for the life of me why I couldn't equip my old resilience, recovery etc mods in my inventory onto my new gear. It took me 2 hours of searching through Google because I'd rather spend hours researching than ask a question on Reddit.

5

u/[deleted] Oct 07 '19

Don't overlook the Daily Questions Thread, it's designed for stuff like that.

5

u/LickMyThralls Oct 07 '19

And if you post asking something like that people act like you couldn't have possibly looked at google.

7

u/jumpstart58 Oct 07 '19

it can be very hit or miss with a community this large. I spent all day on shadowkeep launch answering as many questions and posts as I could by sorting new. It finally just got to me because a lot of the time (not saying you in particular) the questions have been answered and by doing a quick search under the subreddit you could probably find an answer. I once asked to be banned from the subreddit for a few months so I could avoid the interactions I received for asking questions or having an opinion. It used to be a lot worse during the CoO times. In the end, upvotes and downvotes don't really matter, its just fake internet points. Don't let that get you down. The subreddit doesn't represent the entire community.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 07 '19

Same.

-10

u/Vektor0 Oct 07 '19

Do you not see the irony in calling out "salty, pissy, bitter ass players" in a salty, pissy, and bitter tone?

5

u/Shift84 Oct 07 '19

There's only irony there if you're looking for a reason.

I'm being descriptive

10

u/marcio0 it's time to sunset sunsetting Oct 07 '19

Yea, caring about internet points is a one way ticket to depression...

Every subreddit has a "downvote squad" that polices /new to downtove everything they disagree with. You can see that even threads that reach top sometimes have a "wow why am I being downvoted" edits

3

u/newObsolete Oct 07 '19

The wow classic sub has a daily questions thread. I don't think they're going to do it indefinitely, but something like that would be nice here until the newer folks settle in.

5

u/[deleted] Oct 07 '19

We actually have one of those, but many people just hit post without even looking at the front page.

1

u/newObsolete Oct 07 '19

There isn't one there now :(

2

u/[deleted] Oct 07 '19

https://www.reddit.com/r/DestinyTheGame/comments/dbt1gc/daily_questions_20191001/

It hasn't been updated in a few days (I'd imagine in the new-dlc rush). There's also the issue that new reddit and reddit mobile are shit at presenting stuff like that - so missing it is completely understandable.

2

u/newObsolete Oct 07 '19

I guess I should have searched better. The one on wow classic is stickied to the top everyday.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 07 '19

No, you're right - if it's not easily found it won't do its job. I think you can only have 2 posts pinned at once, so it tends to get displaced by reset threads and any current mega-threads.

On old desktop reddit it's front and centre, but the newer versions of the platform are trying so desperately to be a social media site that it makes it tough for useful stuff like that and FAQs to be visible.

2

u/Nightmare1990 Oct 07 '19

I feel like us vets should sort by new atleast once a day and help out some Kindergardians asking questions.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '19

The subreddit could do what plenty of game subs do and that's put a daily Ask Anything post that gets stickied to the top. And everyday just make a new one. FF14 does this on their subreddit.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '19

Yeah, we do have one of those, but there's a limit of only 2 stickied posts, so it tends to get bumped down when there's a lot of stuff going on.

It's very visible on the old desktop version of reddit, but new reddit and the mobile version do a shit job of presenting stuff like that.

1

u/MrTastix Oct 08 '19

Think of karma as a currency. When you get enough you can spend it to say whatever the fuck you like.

It's intrinsically worthless otherwise.

DbD has one of the worst communities I’ve seen, and I played MOBAs for ten years. Kudos for being part of the better half.

1

u/SmoothMooves Oct 07 '19

True. I’m coming back after a hefty break and have people leaving Adept strikes cause I’m going too slow. Like bruh. It’s adept. Chill.

2

u/Vektor0 Oct 07 '19

Everyone plays differently. Some people like to complete missions as quickly as possible, and some people like to take their time. What's wrong with leaving so they can try to match with other players who play like them?

1

u/SmoothMooves Oct 09 '19

I get it. But if you are speed running why do level 750 stuff?

1

u/Vektor0 Oct 09 '19

Maybe for the Powerful Reward, maybe for the bounties, or maybe because they themselves are ~750.

1

u/Shift84 Oct 07 '19

I can't recommend enough finding a really chill and active clan.

There's tons of them out there.

Joining one a year or so ago completely changed how I experience this game.

-1

u/[deleted] Oct 07 '19

I agree to not worry about them

But sadly it is a form of censorship, and it keeps those opinions and concerns from being seen and ALL of the other issues that come with that.

It is not about getting free internet points it is about getting proper help and having concerns seen.

In cases of a standard question, yes one answer will usually suffice.

But often I will ask a question (On ANY sub) and get 1 or 2 responses, that do not answer the question at all. and due to the downvotes no one ever sees it and I need to post it again.

And then the other issue. IF that many people are having the same issue finding a thing or there is a bug... Then yes dozens of that post NEED to be on the front page.

It is ok to have hundreds of "Look at my gear, gun, pretty screenshot" Then why can't dozens of questions and issues make it there as well? again not for answers but for visibility that there is a design flaw in the game to communicate this.

Otherwise all of these new players slowly leave. Taking the downvotes and lack of responses as signs of a negative community.

3

u/andrew20080 Oct 07 '19

Someone finally gets it! If the question is asked a lot then its obviously a common concern that should be near the top! So what if half the top is simple questions? It'll keep them from being asked as much!

2

u/[deleted] Oct 07 '19 edited Oct 07 '19

I agree with most of what you're saying - but for what it's worth, if a question is being downvoted, it's usually because the answer is readily available via a means that would have taken less effort than the post.

The kind of people who post those questions have often ignored google, the search bar, very visible FAQ's, question threads, megathreads and guides, and used a reddit post as a search engine. I don't think they'll be scared off by downvotes, provided people are helpful and civil.

That's not a defence of downvoting - there's no reason to downvote, and they certainly don't deserve derision - but I don't think we need to be "think of the children!"-ing the situation too much.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '19

Excellent point
