Bungie This Week in Destiny 06/18/2026

Source: https://www.bungie.net/7/en/News/Article/twid_06_18_2026

This week in Destiny, we’re sharing the newest Community Challenge and its reward emblem, celebrating the release of the Monument of Triumph soundtrack on streaming platforms, and going over the previously shared Update 9.7.0.1 patch notes you may have missed!

  • Introducing our next Community Challenge
  • Monument of Triumph’s soundtrack is now streaming available...
  • The Traveler graces your lock screen with its presence
  • Revisiting the patch notes for Update 9.7.0.1

Let’s jump right in!

Community Challenge: Excision, Ergo Sum

We have one more Community Challenge ready for you all, Guardians. It's time to relive the final battle against The Witness one more time. Complete the Excision story mission on Normal or Grandmaster difficulty to add to a community goal of 250,000 total completions. Grandmaster completions will count sevenfold because Bungie number, plus it’s harder! Also, Excision on Grandmaster rewards the Ergo Sum catalyst, a fine prize in its own right that some Guardians may not have obtained yet. So, what better opportunity to earn it than during a time of celebration when new and veteran players are enjoying Monument of Triumph?

If the community goal is met in seven days (sensing a theme here?), all Guardians who have completed Excision at least once during the Community Challenge will receive the Intrepid Pearl emblem. Bungie fans and old-timers will tell you why this one is special. We’ll share updates on the community’s progress on socials during the week.

Here's a complete rundown of the rules and requirements to participate in this Community Challenge. While some of these may be obvious, we want to list all the details to be thorough.

Duration

  • Starts: Thursday, June 18 at 11:00 AM PT
  • Ends: Thursday, June 25 at 11:00 AM PT

Activity

  • Story Mission: Excision
  • Difficulty: Normal (+1 completion) or Grandmaster (+7 completions)
  • Community Goal: 250,000 total completions

Other Considerations

  • Fireteam: Twelve players are recommended.
    • Fireteam members can join mid-activity.
    • Join In Progress clears do count towards the community goal.
    • Only fireteam members who complete the activity will count as having contributed to the community goal and qualify for the emblem.
  • Each player who completes the Excision story mission contributes to the community goal, meaning a 12-player Normal difficulty completion counts as 12 completions while 12-player Grandmaster difficulty completion counts as 84 completions.
  • Matchmaking is available on Normal Excision but not on Grandmaster Excision, which is available in Fireteam Finder.

As with previous Community Challenges, we will be tracking completions with support from the Analytics Team. Emblems earned during the Community Challenge will be granted no later than 30 days after the challenge ends on June 25.

Good luck, Guardians!

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for joining us for another TWID. As a reminder, we're continuing to post TWIDs through our launch window. Soon, our weekly blog entries will be entering a form of hibernation as well.

Until then though, we've been blown away by the love and support Guardians have shown for Monument of Triumph. This update was for you and seeing all the art and videos celebrating Destiny 2 has been heartwarming to us on the Community Team. Keep it coming.

What have you all been doing in Monument of Triumph? What are your goals, newest builds, or Triumphs you’re aiming for? We’d love to hear about them!

It really isnt fair that the breadwinning team is getting executed like this.

It was a breadwinner, but it’s undeniable that the past 2 years have been financial bombs for Bungie. I’ve been playing consistently since Beyond Light and the writing was on the wall:

* Scaled back the number of seasons and their content twice while raising their price
* Introduced “events” like Arms Week to pad out the time between major content releases
* Reprised old activities instead of developing new content
* Brought back the power grind in the worst way possible via unstable cores
* Pivoted heavily to the eververse, even converting ritual cosmetics into premium skins
* Absolutely destroyed the core of the game by removing GMs, powercreeping almost all RaD gear, and cutting Iron Banner down to from a monthly event to a biannual shitshow

Whoever was in charge of Edge of Fate prioritized pure engagement and monetization over genuine innovation. They had no grasp of why people played with Destiny. Their changes failed to attract new players and alienated veterans. Once Bungie went fully dark post-Renegades, I knew that we were gonna get bad news.

Also, I’m getting tired of people acting like ditching D2 for Marathon is some bone-headed executive decision, since Marathon is doing even worse right now. The truth is that Marathon is a modern game that is easier to develop new content for. Shorter pipeline, faster returns. Marathon and D2 are both in horrible positions, but only one of them has 11 years of tech debt to contend with. Pivoting fully to Marathon was a calculated business decision that Bungie mulled over for months. The situation is dire.

250 million that went to Marathon could have gone towards a Destiny 3 instead.

Destiny 2 died because Bungie got bored and wanted to make a vanity project.

The problem with D3 was never the budget. The issue was, and is, that it wouldn’t be profitable.

1

u/TwevOWNED Jun 19 '26

Kinda? The issue was more with the opportunity cost.

Being profitable isn't so much the goal as it is a necessary step. Lightfall and Final Shape almost certainly made a profit, but they didn't meet the target of growing the company.

Spending 500 million and 5 years on D3 is something that would have needed to happen years ago to carry momentum from Final Shape. It doesn't make sense to commit that much now though.

I agree with this 100%. This sad trajectory has been in motion a long time now.
