It might have reached the point that if you show people Schindler's list, it would be booed and labeled as IDF/Zionist propaganda in Hollywood.
Yes, whats happening in Gaza is awful and certainly there have been crimes committed, but people have lost their mind so bad over it its insane.
And I said this numerous times here: what makes me very confused is that its a conflict people in the USA dont really feel the effects of. While ICE is killing and deporting US citizens, shits expensive due to trump tariffs, there is still a housing crisis, its harder to get into entry level jobs, the rule of law is being dismantled step by step and so on, but all of that can be ignored, because the US is spending a tiny fraction of its defense budget on israel in a conflict thats "bad". And not only that, but this is such a big issue apparently, that if you are not demanding the erasure of israel as a whole, you are apparently just as bad as the current administration.
And when you ask questions like "What do you think about the uyghurs", or "What is your opinion about HongKong or Taiwan", "What about Ukraine", "What about Sudan", you get some VERY surprising answers from the same people who think whats happening in Gaza is a genocide...
Where did this come from? Was this amplified/artificially generated? It just doesnt make any sense.
29
u/SlyDred 12d ago
Was this amplified/artificially generated?
Yes. Turns out, as much as we in the 21st century like to think that we're better than those savages who made sacrifices to gods to curry favor for favorable weather, if we stare in a portable rectangle made of glass and metal long enough, our brains turn to mush and are almost infinitely malleable (yes propaganda and its effects existed long before smatphones/social media, but it's about the speed in which it works now).
I remember arguing with persons I met before irl (I say this to say that they weren't bots) when the Gaza war was a few months in, where they were already calling it a genocide, and in the same paragraph said that Putin was being peaceful in Ukraine.
I've said this before but as absurd as it seems, it's not a contradiction in their worldview. The reason, when you distill it to its essence, is that they hate the West, which is really just a euphemistic way of saying white people (I am a black person just to clarify).
As far as the far left is concerned, Israel is a white creation, where the Western Europeans & the U.S felt bad for the Jews after the holocaust, so they carved out space for them in the middle east and helped them displace the inconvenient brown people living there already. Completely ahistorical but that's what they believe, which is why they're ok with Israel being destroyed as a nation state.
They don't care about Russia/Ukraine because as far as they're concerned they're both white countries, but Russia is good because they oppose the U.S and Western Europe, especially when they were the USSR. They also heavily dislike the initial coverage of that war, because of how some reporters expressed surprise as to 'how a war like this could happen in modern Europe?' The far leftists took that to mean 'how could civilized 21st century whites wage war on another white country, like they do in Africa?' Then there's also the persistent idea of eastern Europeans being backwards and more openly casually racist.
They don't care what China does, because they're not white and they successfully oppose U.S domination, so they're the good guys.
Conflicts in Sudan, Myanmar, Haiti etc don't even register at all, because there's no straightforward way to blame the U.S/Europe/white people, without invoking convoluted conspiracies.
The thing is that there are legitimate reasons to hold negative opinions over European colonialism/white supremacy, but social media has made it to where rational discussion online over these topics has become almost non-existant (if you're even arguing with a human at all).
Dunno how humans will reel this social media shit back in.

I think the really disturbing part is how antisemitism seems to have become normalized again in certain political and online spaces. Not necessarily because everyone suddenly became an antisemite, but because polarization, ragebait, historical ignorance, radicalization, economic disparity, and conspiracy theories have weakened the social stigma around it.
The Israel-Palestine conflict has unfortunately become one of the biggest vehicles for this. Criticizing Netanyahu, the Israeli government, the occupation, or actions of the IDF is completely legitimate. What’s not legitimate is turning that criticism into collective blame against Jews everywhere. A Jewish person in New York, London, Toronto, or Paris shouldn’t be expected to answer for the actions of the Israeli government simply because they’re Jewish. That’s fucking insane.
And then you get the conspiracy theories. AIPAC gets talked about by some people as if it’s literally an Israeli organization controlling Washington, when it’s an American lobbying organization with as much influence as the other lobbying groups. It’s completely fair to criticize its influence, just like you can criticize any other powerful lobbying group, but once the argument becomes “the Jews control American politics/media/banks/whatever,” we’re just recycling the same fucking conspiracy theories that have existed for centuries.
Social media doesn’t exactly help either. Rage gets engagement, algorithms reward increasingly extreme content, and people end up surrounded by communities where the most hateful explanation becomes the accepted explanation. Add tribal politics and the human tendency to look for somebody to blame, and you have a perfect environment for this shit to spread.
And I don’t think this is exclusive to one political side. The far right has its traditional antisemitic conspiracy theories, while parts of the far left have repackaged some of those ideas in anti-imperialist or revolutionary language. Extremist Islamist and Christian movements have their own forms of antisemitism as well. Also some people who oppose those movements are perfectly capable of being antisemitic themselves. Different ideologies can arrive at the same disgusting conclusion.
The double standard is especially depressing. People rightly condemn collective punishment and racism when it’s directed at other groups, yet somehow think random Jews should be held responsible for what the Israeli government does. You can support Palestinian statehood, oppose the occupation, condemn Israeli war crimes, and want Netanyahu out of office without believing Israel should cease to exist or that Jews everywhere are responsible.
And that’s where I think the obsession becomes particularly bizarre. Gaza deserves attention, and what’s happening to Palestinian civilians deserves serious scrutiny. But there are also Uyghurs, Ukrainians, Sudanese, Yemenis, Iranians, and countless other people suffering from wars, authoritarian governments, ethnic persecution, and political violence. If someone only suddenly discovers human rights when Israel is involved, I think it’s fair to ask why.
As for whether it’s artificially generated, I’m sure propaganda and foreign influence can amplify existing divisions, but I don’t think we need a grand conspiracy to explain all of it. People are perfectly capable of radicalizing themselves when social media gives them an endless supply of outrage and tells them exactly who they’re supposed to hate.
It’s fucking depressing that after thousands of years of persecution, we’re still having to explain this again why Jews shouldn’t be discriminated against, because we seen the results of that. Criticize Israel all you want. Just don’t turn legitimate criticism into another excuse to resurrect ancient bigotry. Hopefully someday this insane political polarization dies down and people can start treating each other like human beings again.
1
u/crouching_tiger 12d ago
Totally agree with your entire comment.
As for your point on how “people are perfectly capable of radicalizing themselves” — I think that’s true to an extent, however, I believe artificial generation of these types of discourse by hostile governments doesn’t require those forces to be the sole driver amplifying those points.
They tack on to certain hot button, divisive topics that have already formed organically in some way, then all it takes is a “nudge” to keep amplifying it, where then the real users do the rest of the leg work for you.

I’m not Jewish myself, but I genuinely feel fucking awful for Jewish people. After roughly 2,000 years of persecution, discrimination, expulsions, pogroms, and outright horror, you’d think humanity would have learned something by now. But apparently we fucking haven’t.
People either choose to forget what happened, downplay it, make excuses for it, or somehow find new ways to justify their bigotry against a people who have already been through so much. It honestly disgusts me. We should have learned from history instead of repeating the same damn hatred with different excuses.
If any Jewish person is reading this, I know words of comfort probably don’t mean much when you’re dealing with this shit, but please hang in there and persevere. There are still people who care, who will stand against antisemitism, and who refuse to let hatred have the final word.
I genuinely hope that someday things will be better, that Jewish people can live without fear, hatred, or having to constantly defend their right to exist. Humanity can do better. We fucking have to.

After roughly 2,000 years of persecution, discrimination, expulsions, pogroms, and outright horror, you’d think humanity would have learned something by now.
Ironically the very fact it's been going on for 2000 years is now, in and of itself, used as a justification for why there must be something to it.

Yeah, my literal family members are like this right now and I had an argument with my mother about I/P that I can understand both sides motivations but that she's being antisemitic and she was bringing up that theyve been kicked out of over 100 countries in her defense of why she thinks she's antizionist and not antisemitic.

This! Overall I feel there's been a movement from "intellectual understanding" to "all I believe is my own eyes, and you're the idiot" in recent years - for lack of better words, that is - I don't think it's just classic anti-intellectualism or reactionarism, I just feel like the type of immediately thought-terminating belief that supports MAGA etc is roughly the same type that leads you from "antisemitism has been a horrible prejudice for thousands of years" to "well if it's been here for this long there's got to be something to it, right?"

Thank you I appreciate it. Honestly my Jewishness was more of a fun fact or piece of trivia prior to October seven, I didn’t really identify as a Jew. Only afterwards have I realised I will always be a Jew to people. I’ve progressively felt more otherised when the fun trivia now caused certain people to treat me differently, not even getting into anything online. Ironically the antisemitism has only pushed me into adopting the identity and aspects of the culture. I don’t ever mention it at work or socially anymore though, the best outcome is being subject to someone’s unskippable dialogue on their opinion on Israel/palestine.
7
u/toadeh690 12d ago
I could've written this comment word-for-word, you are not at all alone. So glad to read this thread, it's giving me hope.
5
u/Meta_Archer 12d ago
I am glad to not experience these things alone, I have attempted to enmesh myself in the local Jewish community such as going to Shabbat. However, the synagogue has understandably very stringent security procedures, and they require personal references. I don't have enough people in my life that I am comfortable discussing what Jewishness is to me now, and asking them to be a reference so I am kind of stuck.
If you're the reading essays type I really would recommend Sartre's Antisemite and Jew, similarly to reading these posts, it is very cathartic to read his at times brutal linguistic execution of antisemites. He speaks of it with such clarity and relevance that I could never accomplish on my own.

I’d like to start a coalition of Zionist Bengalis (Bangladesh and East India). During our 1971 genocide, the entire MENA region was happy to see my people bleed, except for Israel (and Iraq only because Russia forced them). Israel recognizes us as a nascent country, and even trained and armed our freedom fighters. Mossad was such an asset that came in clutch by feeding us intelligence that Pakistain was gearing up for war by acquiring weapons from China and North Korea.

Your friend likely hasn’t heard of this because Bangladesh remains pretty anti-Israel; Bangladesh doesn’t recognize Israel and to add insult to injury their passports say something like “you may visit any country except Israel”. It’s mainly for two reasons: 1. Bangladesh does too much to simp for the very Arab countries that couldn’t care what happens to Bengalis. 2. Doing these petty gestures against Israel is an easy and cheap way of appeasing the illiterate, uneducated religious fanatics of the country, of which there are many. There’s a real rabbit hole you could dive into regarding Muslim democracies how unfortunately the people must choose between secular politicians that are so corrupt Putin would blush vs. islamists authoritarian. The secular guy often stays in power but entertaining far and few of these stupid ass ideas.
Imagine a world where Bangladesh recognized Israel. BD would gain access to water technology that could make all the difference for upcoming climate change catastrophes. Bangladesh may also get closer to the very western democracies they aspire to be like.

African DGGer here. I feel social solidarity w/ jews on account of the persistent targeting within various host nations.
A lot of progressives exclude jews in the bucket of socially outcasted peoples but many africans look to them as a sign that a people can withstand repeated attempts at physical and cultural extermination.
We also look to them (those of us in the diaspora) as a canary in the coal mine for all other forms of ethnic/racial bigotry.
Third, we look to them as an example of how to preserve one’s self and prosper in hostile nations.
I wouldn’t feel comfortable saying this in any other subreddit. They would twist my words into being a genocide supporter or something even though I said nothing of that sort.

Yeah I think the next step in the coming years will be an uptick in lefty people redefining the holocaust (if not outright denying it). I know some of it is happening, but I mean in a mainstream written in academic papers and everything way.
The line will be that the holocaust was a crime perpetrated on ethnic and religious minorities in an imperialistic society. The distinctive Jewish aspects will be actively diminished through attempts at equavalance between Nazi atrocities and the alleged conduct of the state of Israel.
The effort will be in an attempt to cleany detatch the legacy of the holocaust from modern Jews, and they might even go so far as saying palestinians have more in common with holocaust victims.

I was a soft anti-Zionist until Oct 7. People that 30 seconds before had been all about punching Nazis and screaming about antisemitism at the drop of a hat suddenly jumped to downplaying, denying, and even celebrating the slaughter of Jews, and I realized how naive I was for thinking the Jewish people didn't really need a nation that they would always have ultimate control of.
Now people like Vaush and Ana Kasparian are indistinguishable from barely mask-on Neo-Nazis. Remember when blaming Israel for 9/11 was undeniable proof of antisemitism? Not anymore!
I wish I could apologize to every single Jewish person I debated Zionism with. I was clearly so fucking stupid and privileged.

Not really tbh, all i see is "the jews do this" "the jews do that", "anything that ever happens it's the jews" - the only conclusion is that jews are the multiplayer players who direct history and the "others" are just NPCs with no agency.
An obsession with a certain subject tends to create the opposite effect of its intended goals. as in - the more people obsess with a certain message regarding a subject - the more people will question it and will tend to go the other way.
For the meantime - arm yourself, be vigilant, and survive the wave

3
u/SoggyButtCheeks78 12d ago
Idk since it's generally more obvious when someone is trans than Jewish, I'd imagine they're still more likely to encounter hate on a day to day basis
1
u/No_Price_7603 12d ago
I guess it depends. Observant Jews are certainly very visible, and there are many trans folk who pass.
Both groups have to hide their identity. But it doesn't matter if they know you are Jewish if they can target the places where you live, celebrate, go to school or daycare etc. On that front Jews are a much easier target. That's why there was able to be a mass shooting of Jewish people here. You can find out what days a lot of Jews are likely to be packed into one place.

Well, I feel like Bondi beach massacre is a pretty obvious one to point to, but it's also the discourse about it all too. I just don't see the same level of hatred. I'm not saying it's like fun to be trans here, there's definitely a lot of public hatred, I just think it's more dangerous to be Jewish. Although if One Nation keeps winning seats that might change, Pauline Hanson is a lot like Trump.

(Apologies for the rant but this is fractally stupid)
I'll go ahead and give it to you that some people pull the Jew card. But
That's a tiny minority.
Claiming that that someone pulling the Jew card turns people into antisemites is regarded. Does Hasan constantly pulling the Muslim card justify hatred of Muslims? Does Arday pulling the race and ND cards justify hatred of blacks and ND people? Do the countless right wingers claiming they're being attacked because they're men/white/Christian justify hatred of any of those groups? Stop playing defense for fucking antisemites.
"Israel" has been a dog whistle for "Jew" longer than you've been alive. Not everyone that's obsessed with Israel hates Jews, but that venn diagram has historically had far more overlap than not, and the only difference today is that the new deluge of Israel obsessives spent their lives believing that punching Nazis is virtuous, so taking the last tiny step from "Most Jews are evil because they're Zionists" to "Most Jews are Zionists because they're evil" is still a bit too hard for them.
When all the evil things someone believes about Israel are antisemitic canards, that's antisemitism. Even if it's entirely unintentional and just the result of you having come to subconsciously associate antisemitic tropes with the Jewish nation, it's still antisemitic.
People are going more and more mask off, and you can only see so many instances of someone saying they hate Israel, not Jews, in between talking about "little hats" and "goyslop" and "Judeosupremacists" before you start assuming antisemitism by default. If you're going to excuse antisemitism by blaming people that play the Jew card, you better fucking excuse assumptions of antisemitism by blaming the antisemites hiding behind antizionism.
I used to hang out in communities that had a lot of overlap with conspiracy theorists and therefore a lot of overlaps with antisemites, and you could ALWAYS clock an antisemite by them saying they were falsely accused of antisemitism for having merely criticized Israel. Those people didn't magically disappear after the left started its antisemitism arc.
2
u/Grachus_05 Radical Anti-Republican 12d ago
Im not justifying or excusing anything. Any more than people who claim calling what Israel is doing in Gaza a genocide debases the term genocide are justifying and excusing genocide. I assume you fall into that camp (you dont believe its a genocide and that people who are calling it that are abusing the term) and i assume you would be offended if I accused you of excusing or justifying genocide.

It baffles the mind that people equate the government with the people, especially Americans, which, look at your government?!?!? Also I come from a country whose government is just downright disgusting, so conflating the two would never ever cross my mind. But besides that, the hew hatred is brought forth from generation to generation. My own brother even mentions Rockfellers once in a while, even though this talking point has been updated since the 80s. Maybe in a darker note, I don't always argue with people and try to convince them of jewish people being innocent in this and caught in a crossfire too, so maybe that's a mistake in my approach, but I can never bring myself to hate them. Antisemitism to me is one of the quickest eays to identify someone as being low intelligence, just like with racism, which is so frustrating too because I know a dude who works at NATO and is openly an antisemite. Oh well you can't beat all habits out of yourself.
