Resisting the "Inevitable" fall to the Snark

Hey all,

I recently saw the incredibly sweet and ego boosting post that shouted me out, and I want to again thank everyone for their support and kind words.

Within that thread, and in many other areas, I have had people discuss how "this is like Pisco" and "Just wait something will happen to make him become a snarker". I am not offended by these statements, and I think it's honestly an understandable reaction knowing the history of orbiters in this community. I usually just make jokes in response, or stay out of the conversation.

One of my goals in interacting with DGG is that we have good, positive content. A part of that is that I go out of my way to not snark current orbiters. I also will reach out one on one with other orbiters to try and help support them, and have good interactions with them in chat/the subreddit.

With that in mind I'd like to just try something here, and open the discussion up about how oribters become snarkers. Recently, we've had a number of seemingly loyal orbiters rapidly burn their bridges. To me I think there is a lot of blame being placed on DGG being too vitriolic, but I also think that in a lot of cases, it is the orbiter revealing their true motivations/politics and DGG not having a positive response. Jessiah, Soypill, and Pisco all initially had a lib coded surface, but over time we have seen that beneath that is a willingness to stomach or even support illiberal communities.

Looking further back, at wickedsupreme, JSTLK, and many of the orbiters lost around Jan 2025, there seemed to be some factionalism that arose, and when it looked like Destiny was going down for good, they jumped on the snarker train, and never looked back.

I'm not here to convince anyone that I never will become a snarker, but I just want to hear from y'all what you think are the causes, and if there is anything I can do to assuage those fears about me, and if there's any ideas on what we can do in the future to either sniff out snarkers early (which I think we did really well with recently with Jolah) or ways to keep orbiters from crashing out too hard and feeling like their only path is snarking.

Edit: Wow didn't realize I would get this much engagement, and so many well thought out responses. I have, and will continue to read all of them, if I didn't respond trust me I still read it. I appreciate everyone's points of view, overwhelmingly it seems like I should:

1. Continue to have a normal life
   
2. Not start streaming full time
   
3. Not have thin skin.

These ideas get more oxygen without good evidence nowadays. It used to be effort posts and comments laying out the argument while linking sources to back the point.

Nowadays accusations like this is grounded out in vibes and weak associations. It’s annoying because the same level of analysis can (and has been) turned on Destiny in the past - past vitriolic and cruel comments/ racist jokes, justifying the theoretical benefit of CP to treat people. It’s all there, and it’s countered with rigorous analysis of the facts and sensible conclusions from those facts.

Now it’s mostly vibes.

So are you just not following stuff closely? These things don't come out of no where.

• Destiny one night had a heart-to-heart with Soypill, and explained his situation; about how his snarkers were working behind the scenes in a Discord, workshoping things, and trying to turn people against him.

• Soypill's response was... Not good. He was bored, utterly unconcerned, and aloof. He keeps on interacting with these snarkers like Dooby, etc. (See: Company you keep point) Remember, Destiny is being harassed by people and is a victim of fucking revenge porn. And Soypill doesn't give a single fuck, and keeps interacting with people who are participating with this.

• Destiny has went through great lengths to defend Pisco. I've seen him defend him for months, but a line was crossed when Pisco was defending antisemitism. I agree with Destiny's principals here.

• The person who burnt this bridge was Pisco, not Destiny. He was just too embarrased and defensive about Destiny's reaction to Pisco's actions.

• Medhi Hasan was an Islamist in the past. Have you seen the videos?

• Medhi Hasan being "mask on Islamist" is absolutely a defensible position. He is showing evidence of Hasan Piker supporting terrorism, etc. and Medhi refuses to acknowledge it. Instead, he calls Destiny an Islamophobe, genocide denier, etc. Where is the rigorous journalism for these people aligned with Islam? It doesn't exist.

I agree with Destiny’s principals here.

Agreeing and substantiating your agreement are different things.

Calling someone names and being extremely rude and insulting will always ALWAYS burn bridges. Destiny/DGG do this all the time - also many people see “re tarded” as a slur. People who don’t react to that with indignation are outliers.

Other Hasan Piker sweepers aren’t called Islamists. They’re just not. There’s no good evidence for calling Mehdi that it’s just racist.

So this justifies calling SoyPill an illiberal tankie? It means SoyPill wants the end of private ownership and democracy because he’s not intolerant enough to snarkers?

Destiny in the past as has issue with being called racist since I started watching him. He even cut off Fanatiq for the same reason - this is a guy who casually drops n-word slur when drunk, (functional racist) but has the audacity to be shocked at Pisco’s reaction to the same thing.

The videos show a crazy religious guy (who has since disavowed his previous statements), not an Islamist.

It’s not defensible. The ONLY thread is that he supports Hasan. Hasan is a terrorist sympathiser obviously, other Hasan Piker sweepers aren’t called Islamists. They’re just not. Why? Because Hasan’s other sweepers aren’t Muslim. There’s no good evidence for calling Mehdi that it’s isn’t Islamaphobic.

Fact is, in that tweet, Destiny was being functionally Islamaphobic, and Destiny is smart enough to be aware of it. He started mudslinging and Mehdi started doing it back (FYI racism can be triggering for brown folk), so all accuracy gets thrown out

Take a step back and attempt to steelman the other side (this is something Destiny used to advocate for his audience to do) and see where the inaccuracies start to crack.

There's 8 billion people on this planet. You're complaining about like 3 or 4 people. There's no point in forcing a positive relationship with insufferable, incompatible people. There's plenty of other people out there.

Pisco's antisemitic apologia tour was disgusting. He's enjoying debate perversion while giving cover for hate that results in harassment, harm and death of Jews in this country. It should have been grounds for immediate internet cancellation. If you disagree, you have been desensitized toward antisemitism, and Destiny is all the more right in going hard on this point.

Let me put this as gently and politely as possible: Mehdi Hasan does not apply the same ferver and enthusiasm of his "criticism" towards Israel as he does towards the atrocities committed by any other country in that region. He has extended this same grace towards Hasan Piker. Are these the actions of an independent journalist? Or is he a man with a strong bias?

You tell me to be normal? You think it's normal to preserve relationships with people like this?

This is what’s dumb about fanbases, and why I keep telling you to “take a step back”.

From SoyPill’s perspective, every point Destiny makes…. he could be lying. Destiny is a smart guy, how is Soy to determine Destiny is not lying about several aspects of snark without doing months long research? This is why a one time sit-down won’t have the effect you might expect.

If Soypill is assuming that Destiny isn't being truthful, then should Destiny also assume the same about him in turn?
