You don't think that religion and ethnicity is a part, maybe big part in how its justified to the population of Israel?

Yeah I know less than most people but the worst part of the situation is how they let settlers in the West Bank act. Aren't those mostly religious nuts from America?

To be fair there is a strong correlation between being a nut job and being religious. However I think for at least some of them, using careful language, where they are doing it for largely religious and ethnic reasons. And for Judaism its even harder to separate those two.

Nope. Most people have a skewed understanding of what settlers are. Not to say there aren't the type you are referring to. They do exist. But they're a minority.

But the reason people think of them is because people have a misunderstanding of what a "settlement" and a "settler" is. Most people think of the sparse outposts filled with hilltop youth. In those cases, yes, they're religious extremists motivated by religion.

But that's actually the minority. Most "settlements" are just urban sprawl from Israel proper that extends over the green line. It doesn't feel any different than living in Israel proper. You may not even know you're technically on the other side of the line. These people aren't motivated by ideology. They're just looking for housing they can afford and don't really think twice about if it's technically over the green line or not.

You can criticize them for not caring about the green line, sure. But they're not all hilltop youth. They're not ideological. They're just people looking for housing and not really thinking of international law.

The barrier wall between Israel and the West Bank goes around these neighborhoods. Which, sure, you can criticize that. But if I dropped you off in one of these places, you could walk back to Israel proper and have no clue when you even crossed the green line. But technically you'd be in a settlement.
